Using The Deaf Community As An Alternative Treatment Strategy: Developing Deaf Treatment Foster Homes, Stephen H. Hamerdinger, Daniel Murphy Oct 2019

Using The Deaf Community As An Alternative Treatment Strategy: Developing Deaf Treatment Foster Homes, Stephen H. Hamerdinger, Daniel Murphy

JADARA

There are few treatment programs for deaf children who have severe emotional or behavioral disturbances. Most programs are residential in nature. While these programs provide a much needed service, they are not available to every child that needs treatment. Further, many children do better in smaller, family oriented environments than they do in residential treatment programs. Therapeutic foster care approaches are increasingly being used in many places as an alternative to residential treatment for hearing children.

Until recently, such programs have not been greatly utilized as an alternative to treatment for deaf children. When deaf children are placed in such …

When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White Oct 2019

When Deaf Parents Adopt Deaf Children: An Investigation Of The Concept Of Adoptive Parent Entitlement In Deaf Adopted Families, Barbara J. White

JADARA

The literature on Deaf people as parents in the past two decades is presented from both a culturally affirmative and a medical/pathological perspective (Jones, 1995; Lane, 1992, 1993; Meadow-Orlans, 1997; Spencer, Bodner-Johnson & Gutfreund, 1992), with the latter being more prevalent. It is rare to find an article that portrays Deaf people as highly competent and successful parents. It is even rarer to find an article that shows positive outcomes when Deaf parents adopt children (Shettle, 1997; White, 1997). The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of adoptive parenthood from the viewpoint of seven Deaf mothers …

JADARA

This paper presents an overview of the Independent Living Movement and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as Amended, which mandated the creation of Centers for Independent Living (CILs). It then focuses on CDL services that are of particular benefit to persons who are deaf or hard of hearing using, the under-utilization of CILs by persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, and possible reasons for this situation are discussed.

Black Deaf Persons And Their Families: Ecological And Systems Perspectives, Elizabeth A. Creamer Oct 2019

Black Deaf Persons And Their Families: Ecological And Systems Perspectives, Elizabeth A. Creamer

JADARA

This paper presents both the ecological and systems perspectives for understanding and empowering Black Deaf persons in the context of their families and social systems. The term "Black Deaf Persons" can be referred to as African American Deaf persons or Black Deaf persons originally from America, Africa, Caribbean countries, or other countries. The learning objectives are to scrutinize and explicate both the ecological and systems framework for understanding the relationships that occur within Black families with Deaf members and among other social systems that are involved with Black Deaf persons, and planning and implementing creative interventions to adjust Black Deaf …

From Traditional To Innovative Assessment: The Case Of Depression, Irene W. Leigh

JADARA

This article reviews various approaches to the assessment of depression in deaf people as based on current research. Studies comparing traditional paper and pencil instrumentation with American Sign Language (ASL) video tape approaches are presented. Results indicate that both approaches do work with deaf clients, depending on language proficiency in either English or ASL. Exploration of computerized technology is warranted.

Assessment Of Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Persons: A Strengths Based Transactional Deafness Paradigm, Martha Sheridan Oct 2019

Assessment Of Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Persons: A Strengths Based Transactional Deafness Paradigm, Martha Sheridan

JADARA

This article discusses the existence of a cultural and professional obsession with pathology which has jaded mental health assessments of consumers. The importance of incorporating ecological and strengths perspectives into the assessment process is discussed. It is suggested that individual and environmental strengths need to be taken into consideration for a more positive, respectful and empowering shift in assessment paradigms to occur. Deaf knowledgeable mental health professionals have an ethical obligation to consider the strengths and meanings of various d/Deaf, hard-of-hearing and late deafened realities as well as the individual's ancestral, cultural, spiritual and gender realities. A strengths based transactional …

Preferences Of Deaf College Students For The Hearing Status Of Their Children, Margery S. Miller, Donald F. Moores, Deborah Sicoli Oct 2019

Preferences Of Deaf College Students For The Hearing Status Of Their Children, Margery S. Miller, Donald F. Moores, Deborah Sicoli

JADARA

The anticipated results of genetic research and the implications for genetic engineering have the potential to reduce the incidence of conditions such as cancer, but questions have been raised about the ethics of proceeding to conditions such as blindness, deafness or color-blindness. One area that has not been addressed is the preferences of deaf individuals for the hearing status of their children. The present study investigated the preference of deaf college students for the hearing status of children they might have in the future. The results indicated that the majority of respondents expressed no preference for hearing status of children. …

An Attributional Analysis Of Aggression Among Children Who Are Deaf, Tamera Burton Murdock, Ronald L. Lybarger Oct 2019

An Attributional Analysis Of Aggression Among Children Who Are Deaf, Tamera Burton Murdock, Ronald L. Lybarger

JADARA

This exploratory study applied attribution theory to explain aggressive behaviors using a sample of thirty children who are deaf, ages 9-12. Students were shown four hypothetical scenarios of a child causing another child minor harm, such as bumping into him or her in the hall. The intention of the provocateur was ambiguous. Participants were instructed to pretend they were the child who had been harmed. Subsequently, they were questioned about the provocateur's intentions, their own emotional responses, and their likely behavioral response. Consistent with our predictions, many children demonstrated hostile (i.e., hostile) attributional biases. Moreover, the results support the cognition, …

Genetic Medical Clinic In Kentucky: A Needs Assessment Of Anabaptist Households, Matthew M. Hunt, Susan L. Jones Oct 2019

Genetic Medical Clinic In Kentucky: A Needs Assessment Of Anabaptist Households, Matthew M. Hunt, Susan L. Jones

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

The purposes of this study are to (a) describe the process of collecting survey data related to un/diagnosed genetic disorders in Anabaptist households, and (b) determine the need for a genetic medical clinic in Kentucky. A six-page adapted survey questionnaire was utilized to collect family status, un/diagnosed genetic conditions, reproductive history, history of deceased children, and demographics. The questionnaire was mailed to over 2,000 households; addresses were collected from Anabaptist directories. Data suggest that more than one-third of households include a family member with an un/diagnosed genetic condition. Collectively, 120 diagnosed conditions and 90 undiagnosed conditions were reported. Half of …

The UnDistinguished Scholar Of The Amish, Werner Enninger, -Or- Has The Time Yet Come For Rigorous Theory In Amish Studies?, Cory Anderson Oct 2019

The UnDistinguished Scholar Of The Amish, Werner Enninger, -Or- Has The Time Yet Come For Rigorous Theory In Amish Studies?, Cory Anderson

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Werner Enninger embodies the highest standards of methodological rigor and theoretical insight in Amish studies, and this article synthesizes his 30-some publications written in English. Enninger was a socio-linguist from Germany who conducted field research in Delaware in the 1970s and published intensely in the 1980s. His mixed methods address common hurdles field researchers face and offer meticulously detailed qualitative and quantitative data. Enninger’s theory can be organized around a social system model that fuses structural functionalism and symbolic interactionism. Within the model, he proposes a four-part superstructure—(1) core, group-defining values, namely, religious community and separation, (2) are realized in …

Birthing New Kinships: The Cross-Pollinating Potential Of Amish Health Research, Natalie Jolly Oct 2019

Birthing New Kinships: The Cross-Pollinating Potential Of Amish Health Research, Natalie Jolly

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

In this article, I explore the connections between Amish gender socialization and Amish birth practices to suggest that an Amish construction of femininity shapes the ways that Amish women experience childbirth. This study is framed by Amish women’s health research and takes as a point of departure two observations often made about Amish childbirth practices: (1) medical research has found that Amish women have shorter labors than their non-Amish (English) counterparts, and (2) doctors, midwives, and birth attendants have argued that Amish women’s expression of pain during labor and delivery differs substantially from their English counterparts. I draw on my …

Reviving The Demographic Study Of The Amish, Corey Colyer, Cory Anderson, Joseph Donnermeyer, Rachel Stein, Samson Wasao Oct 2019

Reviving The Demographic Study Of The Amish, Corey Colyer, Cory Anderson, Joseph Donnermeyer, Rachel Stein, Samson Wasao

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

The Amish exhibit distinctive demographic patterns, notably high fertility. While scholars have studied Amish population dynamics for more than a half century, recent research in this area is limited. We believe the time is ripe to reverse this trend. This article reviews data collection methods, points to a variety of accessible sources of new data, presents some preliminary results from the analysis of one such source (the McKune dataset for Holmes County, Ohio), introduces the research agenda and work of the newly formed Amish Population Research Group, and reviews past demographic findings to situate our agenda. An invitation is extended …

Seventy-Five Years Of Amish Studies, 1942 To 2017: A Critical Review Of Scholarship Trends (With An Extensive Bibliography), Cory Anderson Oct 2019

Seventy-Five Years Of Amish Studies, 1942 To 2017: A Critical Review Of Scholarship Trends (With An Extensive Bibliography), Cory Anderson

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

After 75 years, Amish studies has received no field reviews, an oversight I rectify with this article using several citation analysis techniques. I offer criteria for defining Amish research, which results in 983 references that are analyzed. Amish studies has a very highly centralized core of works; the top one percent of cited references account for nearly 20% of every citation in Amish studies, with Hostetler, Kraybill, Nolt, and Huntington dominating the top list. Few consolidated subareas exist, exceptions being language and health- population research. Analyzing Amish studies chronologically, the field early on accepted the definitive-sympathetic-authoritative-comprehensive-insider research approach, which legitimated …

Reliability And Validity Of A Scale To Measure Prejudice Toward Old Order Amish, William Mcguigan Oct 2019

Reliability And Validity Of A Scale To Measure Prejudice Toward Old Order Amish, William Mcguigan

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Numerous studies have examined prejudice in regard to race, age, sexual orientation, and gender, among others. However, there remains a paucity of research on prejudice toward Christian religious groups. In particular, prejudice towards one of America’s fastest growing religious groups, the Old Order Amish, is rarely examined. Using social categorization theory and based on McConahay’s modern and old-fashioned racism scale, an “Attitude Toward Amish” scale is developed and tested. Factor analysis revealed one dominant component and high internal reliability. The article concludes with a discussion of implications for future research of this rapidly growing population.

A Peculiar People Revisited: Demographic Foundations Of The Iowa Amish In The 21st Century, Elizabeth Cooksey, Joseph Donnermeyer Oct 2019

A Peculiar People Revisited: Demographic Foundations Of The Iowa Amish In The 21st Century, Elizabeth Cooksey, Joseph Donnermeyer

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

This article describes the demographic foundations of the Amish in Iowa. We note that since the publication of “A Peculiar People” by Elmer and Dorothy Schwieder in 1975, the demographic dynamics of the Amish have changed little. They remain a high fertility group; and when coupled with increases in their retention of daughters and sons in the Amish faith, the Amish are currently experiencing rapid population increase and settlement growth. In turn, the occupational base of the Iowa Amish has become more diverse and less reliant on agriculture. We observe that the first or founding families for new settlements in …

Variation Of Body Condition And Plasma Metabolites In A Population Of South Florida Nurse Sharks, Ginglymostoma Cirratum, Shannon G. Moorhead Oct 2019

Variation Of Body Condition And Plasma Metabolites In A Population Of South Florida Nurse Sharks, Ginglymostoma Cirratum, Shannon G. Moorhead

Open Access Theses

The way an animal utilizes and stores energy directly affects its ability to perform essential life functions (e.g., foraging, migration, reproduction), with implications for its health and fitness; therefore, individual variation in energy storage and metabolism within a population leads to intra-population variation in individual fitness and survival. Consequently, understanding the factors that contribute to variation in energy storage and metabolism within a population can aid in identifying factors that influence that population’s fitness. Compared to other taxa, there has been relatively little research to investigate the factors that govern variation in elasmobranch energy use and storage, particularly in wild …

The Effects Of Combinations Of Limited Ration And Diazinon Exposure On Acetylcholinesterase Activity, Growth And Reproduction In Oryzias Latipes, The Japanese Medaka, Kevin Flynn, Rodney Johnson, Doug Lothenbach, Joe Swintek, Frank Whiteman, Matthew Etterson Oct 2019

The Effects Of Combinations Of Limited Ration And Diazinon Exposure On Acetylcholinesterase Activity, Growth And Reproduction In Oryzias Latipes, The Japanese Medaka, Kevin Flynn, Rodney Johnson, Doug Lothenbach, Joe Swintek, Frank Whiteman, Matthew Etterson

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Environmental contamination can negatively impact fish populations. In addition to acute toxicity leading to death, toxicants can reduce fish growth and lower reproduction. The potential for adverse population level effects of environmental contaminants are estimated to conduct risk assessments from laboratory toxicity tests that most often measure apical endpoints related to growth, survival and reproduction. The relationships between these effect endpoints are being evaluated to predict shifts in fish population demography better after exposure to environmental toxicants. Environmental contaminants can also affect fish populations indirectly by reducing prey biomass. However, estimating the magnitude of the combined effects of prey reduction …

On Finding Two Posets That Cover Given Linear Orders, Ivy Ordanel, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr, Henry Adorna Oct 2019

On Finding Two Posets That Cover Given Linear Orders, Ivy Ordanel, Proceso L. Fernandez Jr, Henry Adorna

Department of Information Systems & Computer Science Faculty Publications

The Poset Cover Problem is an optimization problem where the goal is to determine a minimum set of posets that covers a given set of linear orders. This problem is relevant in the field of data mining, specifically in determining directed networks or models that explain the ordering of objects in a large sequential dataset. It is already known that the decision version of the problem is NP-Hard while its variation where the goal is to determine only a single poset that covers the input is in P. In this study, we investigate the variation, which we call the 2-Poset …

Evaluating Alcohol And Other Drug Use Problems With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Persons, Debra Guthmann, Kathy Sandberg Oct 2019

Evaluating Alcohol And Other Drug Use Problems With Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Persons, Debra Guthmann, Kathy Sandberg

JADARA

Professionals who provide services to Deaf and hard of hearing individuals may encounter situations that could be related to the person's use of alcohol and/or other drugs. Accessing an agency that can provide an appropriate chemical dependency assessment for a Deaf or hard of hearing person is difficult since there are no formalized assessment tools normed or specifically designed to use with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Additionally, most assessors are unfamiliar with how to work with Deaf and hard of hearing people, less likely to be fluent in American Sign Language and unaware of appropriate treatment options. The …
