Varying Weed Densities Alter The Corn Transcriptome, Highlighting A Core Set Of Weed-Induced Genes And Processes With Potential For Manipulating Weed Tolerance, David P. Horvath, Sharon A. Clay, Stephanie A. Bruggeman, James V. Anderson, Wun S. Chao, Kathleen Yeater

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

The phenological responses of corn (Zea mays L.) to competition with increasing densities of winter canola (Brassica napus L.) as the weedy competitor were investigated. Changes in the corn transcriptome resulting from varying weed densities were used to identify genes and processes responsive to competition under controlled conditions where light, nutrients, and water were not limited. Increasing densities of weeds resulted in decreased corn growth and development and increased the number and expression intensity of competition-responsive genes. The physiological processes identified in corn that were consistently induced by competition with weeds included protein synthesis and various transport functions. …

Experimental Investigation Examining The Effects Of Acute Exercise On Implicit Memory Function, Paul D. Loprinzi, Morgan Gilbert, Gina Robinson, Briahna Dickerson

Faculty and Student Publications

© 2019, PsychOpen. All rights reserved. Emerging work suggests that acute exercise can enhance explicit memory function. Minimal research, however, has examined whether acute exercise is associated with implicit memory, which was the purpose of this study. Three separate experimental studies were computed (N = 120; Mean age = 21). In Experiment 1, participants were randomly assigned to either a moderate-intensity bout of acute exercise (15-minute) or engaged in a seated control task (15-minute), followed by the completion of a word-fragmentation implicit memory task. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1, but instead employed a higher-intensity exercise protocol. For Experiment 3, participants …

The importance of classifying cancer patients into high to low-risk groups has led many research teams to study the application of machine learning (ML) methods. Here, the leukemia dataset is used for classification to diagnosis the disease. The proposed K-Watts classifying algorithm, compared to other classification algorithms, yields the lowest error rate. The purpose of the reproduction for record protection is to represent a clear idea about the new Fuzzy Responsibility- Based Access Organizer (FRBAO). The projected reproduction provides the wider society safe plans, or with access to the organized mode in MultiPlan hypothesis, using fuzzy constraints. The view part …

Genome-Wide Computational Identification Of Biologically Significant Cis-Regulatory Elements And Associated Transcription Factors From Rice, Chai-Ling Ho, Matt Geisler Nov 2019

Genome-Wide Computational Identification Of Biologically Significant Cis-Regulatory Elements And Associated Transcription Factors From Rice, Chai-Ling Ho, Matt Geisler

Publications

The interactions between transcription factors (TFs) and cis-acting regulatory elements (CREs) provide crucial information on the regulation of gene expression. The determination of TF-binding sites and CREs experimentally is costly and time intensive. An in silico identification and annotation of TFs, and the prediction of CREs from rice are made possible by the availability of whole genome sequence and transcriptome data. In this study, we tested the applicability of two algorithms developed for other model systems for the identification of biologically significant CREs of co-expressed genes from rice. CREs were identified from the DNA sequences located upstream from the transcription …

Written In Black, White, And Red: An Exploration Of Civilizer Theology In American History, Jeremy Mcginniss Nov 2019

Written In Black, White, And Red: An Exploration Of Civilizer Theology In American History, Jeremy Mcginniss

Master's Theses

This paper proposes an extended definition and discusses examples of civilizer theology within the perceptions and practices of white Protestant American Christianity faith traditions. Civilizer theology is defined as a self-referential, self-fulfilling framework actively shaping the expectations, behaviors and practices of societal norms driving cultural practices. Examples are selected as guided by three significant and interdependent dispositions characterizing civilizer theology: cultural decay/moral decline, authority, and violence. This paper hypothesizes theological interpretation, application and exegesis, mediated by the three dispositions, are deliberately applied to support socio-economic, cultural and political ends with the goal of maintaining power structures benefiting a particular group.

Bridging The Gap Between Immigration Detainment And Parental Rights: A Constitutional Consideration Of Migrant Children Separation, Kelsey Burge Nov 2019

Bridging The Gap Between Immigration Detainment And Parental Rights: A Constitutional Consideration Of Migrant Children Separation, Kelsey Burge

Northern Illinois Law Review Supplement

Federal immigration law does not completely comport with state family law because some federal legislation, such as the Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA), requires states to initiate parental custody proceedings due to children being separated from their parents for a statutorily defined period, even when parents are detained in immigration centers with very uncertain timelines. Parental custody proceedings involve factors that each state has authority to enact evaluating parental fitness; however, the factors may be implicitly or explicitly biased toward migrant parents, resulting in migrant parental custody being terminated unfairly. While Trump's zero-tolerance policy enacted in 2018 sparked outrage …

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

The use of mixed-matrix materials (MMM) has become a major topic of research in recent years, due to unique properties achieved in these composites. In this work, biochar from sunflower seed hull pyrolysis and biochar/polysulfone (PSF) MMMs were produced and characterized. The optimal pyrolysis temperature for biochar production was determined to be 500 °C. The resulting biochar properties were an iodine number of 203 mg/g and a pore volume of 0.595 mL/g. In MMM fabrication, the use 4% ethanol as nonsolvent in the wet phase inversion process increased the glass transition temperature by 8 °C, indicating improved biochar/PSF interaction. The …

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Grapevine (Vitis spp.) contains a wealth of phytochemicals that have received considerable attention due to health-promoting properties and biological activities as phytoalexins. To date, the genetic basis of the quantitative variations for these potentially beneficial compounds has been limited. Here, metabolic quantitative trait locus (mQTL) mapping was conducted using grapevine stems of a segregating F2 population. Metabolic profiling of grapevine stems was performed using liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS), resulting in the detection of 1317 ions/features. In total, 19 of these features matched with literature-reported stilbenoid masses and were genetically mapped using a 1449-SNP linkage map and R/qtl …

Soliton Pair Propagation In Three-Level Unbalanced Medium, Sofiane Grira, Hichem Eleuch

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The study investigates the soliton-pair propagation in an optical dense three-level atomic media where the dissipation of the atomic system is considered for unbalanced coupling between the allowed atomic transitions and the two classical pump fields. Analytical solutions of the solitary wave-pair are derived and the existence conditions for such wave-pair propagation is highlighted. The allowed soliton-pair velocities are defined.

Ritualized Display Of A Leaf: A Putative Agonistic Signal In Both Sexes Of Tropical Bird, L. M. Kiere, Troy G. Murphy, A. Garcia-Muñoz, M. Osorio-Beristain Nov 2019

Ritualized Display Of A Leaf: A Putative Agonistic Signal In Both Sexes Of Tropical Bird, L. M. Kiere, Troy G. Murphy, A. Garcia-Muñoz, M. Osorio-Beristain

Biology Faculty Research

Birds use many different signaling modalities (e.g. vocalizations, displays) to transmit information about their motivation to defend valuable resources. A handful of taxa use "props", inedible objects scavenged from the environment, in signaling. Several species of motmots (Coraciiformes) hold a leaf in their bill in a display that observational evidence suggests is agonistic. We used a simulated intruder experiment to test this display's agonistic signaling function using data from both members of pairs of russet-crowned motmots (Momotus mexicanus). If the display is agonistic, we expected territory-holding pairs to respond more strongly toward taxidermic mounts displaying a leaf. Our results showed …

Why Deep Learning Is More Efficient Than Support Vector Machines, And How It Is Related To Sparsity Techniques In Signal Processing, Laxman Bokati, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Several decades ago, traditional neural networks were the most efficient machine learning technique. Then it turned out that, in general, a different technique called support vector machines is more efficient. Reasonably recently, a new technique called deep learning has been shown to be the most efficient one. These are empirical observations, but how we explain them -- thus making the corresponding conclusions more reliable? In this paper, we provide a possible theoretical explanation for the above-described empirical comparisons. This explanation enables us to explain yet another empirical fact -- that sparsity techniques turned out to be very efficient in signal …
