The Effects Of Caffeine Ingestion On The Hemostatic Response To Simulated Firefighting Activities, Sierra Wassell
The Effects Of Caffeine Ingestion On The Hemostatic Response To Simulated Firefighting Activities, Sierra Wassell
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
The leading cause of death among firefighters is sudden cardiac event, and it is acknowledged that most ischemic events are due to an occlusive thrombus formation. In addition, due to the demanding job requirements and shift work, firefighters are commonly known to overuse caffeine as an ergogenic aid. The purposes of this study were to examine the potential effects of caffeine on the hemostatic response to simulated firefighting activity.
The Effect Of Oral Contraceptives On Caffeine Metabolism And Cycling Performance, Annette M. Lemanski
The Effect Of Oral Contraceptives On Caffeine Metabolism And Cycling Performance, Annette M. Lemanski
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
This project objectives were to determine the effects of oral contraceptives and menstrual cycle on the benefits of caffeine supplementation for cycling performance. Seventeen recreationally trained female cyclists completed four trials consisting of 3 kilometer time trials. Subjects ingested either caffeine or a placebo one hour prior to each trial. The magnitude of the ergogenic aid of caffeine was compared between oral contraceptive users and eumenorreheic females. In addition, the effect of caffeine was compared across different phases of the menstrual cycle, specifically the follicular and luteal phases.
Durability Of Cement-Based Materials In Drinking Water Storage, Matthias Schwotzer, Andreas Gerdes
Durability Of Cement-Based Materials In Drinking Water Storage, Matthias Schwotzer, Andreas Gerdes
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
In order to provide a hygienic storage drinking water reservoirs have been coated with mineral mortar linings in all epochs of European history. However, modern cement-based materials often show in this special operational environment an inadequate durability. Even though drinking water is commonly not considered particularly harmful to cementitious systems, the chemical degradation of mortar linings in drinking water storage systems can occur very fast compared to other common deterioration reactions. This results in cost intensive repair measures and thus high life-cycle costs as well associated with an ecological burden. Furthermore, an insufficient understanding of degradation mechanisms and their underlying …
Performance Of Anaerobic Digestion Systems: A Review, Douglas Thompson, Sree Nanukuttan, Daniel Mcpolin
Performance Of Anaerobic Digestion Systems: A Review, Douglas Thompson, Sree Nanukuttan, Daniel Mcpolin
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Anaerobic digesters contain extreme environments that change drastically during the production cycle. Organic material is broken down first into amino and fatty acids, then into volatile fatty acids, ammonia, CO2, H2S and other by-products. These acids and alcohols are converted to acetic acid as well as CO2 and H2, which is then used to create methane. All these biological processes mean that the pH, temperature and type of bacteria vary, creating conditions outside the scope of current standards, such as a concentration of ammonium ions 8 times greater than the upper limit of …

Effect Of Storage Temperature On The Survival Or Growth Of Listeria Monocytogenes On Whole And Fresh-Cut Produce, Juan F. Moreira Calix
LSU Master's Theses
Whole and fresh-cut produce are minimally processed and, therefore susceptible to microbial contamination. This study examined the survival or growth of Listeria monocytogenes on whole, and fresh-cut produce at different storage temperatures. Fresh fruits (cantaloupes, pears, pineapples, papayas, and watermelon) and vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, kale, and green bell peppers) were cut into 25 g pieces and were spot inoculated with 0.5 mL (8 Log CFU/mL) of Listeria monocytogenes. Inoculated fresh-cut samples were stored at 4°C or 13°C for 6 days. To represent the outer surface of the produce, cantaloupes and green bell pepper disks (20 cm2) were cut with …

The Effect Of Calcium Nitrate On The Hydration Of Calcium Aluminate Cement At Different Curing Temperatures, Hongxia Wang, Guizhi Diao, Guanghua Liu, H Wang, Lixiong Gao, Guangwei Liu
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
Phase conversion in calcium aluminate cements (CAC) induces significant volumetric instability; it would result in an increase in porosity and decrease in strength in CAC. In this study, calcium nitrate (CN) as a phase conversion inhibitor, the effect of CN on the hydration of CAC at different curing temperatures was studied. Xray diffraction, thermal analysis, SEM, isothermal calorimetry and the compressive strength were conducted on the CAC dosages of 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%CN cured at 20, 30, 40 and 50. The results show CN can retard CAC hydration, alter the characters of the hydrates of CAC systems and avoid …

International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
In alkali-activated slags (AAS), where ground granulated blast furnace slag is used as the main precursor, the presence of reduced sulfur species yields a highly reducing pore solution environment. This study investigates the influence of sulfide on steel passivation in alkali-activated slag mortars immersed in alkaline (1 M NaOH) and alkaline chloride-rich (1 M NaOH with 5 M NaCl) solutions, and the dependency of chloride-induced pitting on the immersion time and the concentration of sulfide in simulated alkali-activated slag pore solutions (containing 0.80 M OH- and 0 M, 0.01 M and 0.45 M HS- ) by means of electrochemical techniques. …

Increase Of Reactive Oxygen Species Contributes To Growth Inhibition By Fluconazole In Cryptococcus Neoformans, Nadir Hani Dbouk, Madison Bailey Covington, Kenny Nguyen, Srikripa Chandrasekaran
Open Access Fund Publications
Background
Cryptococcus neoformans, a basidiomycetous yeast, is a fungal pathogen that can colonize the lungs of humans causing pneumonia and fungal meningitis in severely immunocompromised individuals. Recent studies have implied that the antifungal drug fluconazole (FLC) can induce oxidative stress in C. neoformans by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), as presence of the antioxidant ascorbic acid (AA) could reverse the inhibitory effects of FLC on C. neoformans. However, in Candida albicans, AA has been shown to stimulate the expression of genes essential for ergosterol biosynthesis. Hence, the contribution of ROS in FLC-mediated growth inhibition …
Marx In A Gay Bar: Indecent Theology As A Reflection On The Theology Of Liberation And Sexuality, Marcella Althaus-Reid
Marx In A Gay Bar: Indecent Theology As A Reflection On The Theology Of Liberation And Sexuality, Marcella Althaus-Reid
Conexión Queer: Revista Latinoamericana y Caribeña de Teologías Queer
This article seeks to analyze the relationship between the theology of liberation and sexuality critically. Without denying Latin American Liberation Theology and Feminist Theology’s influence in her thought, Marcella Althaus-Reid demonstrates exchanges between these theologies and the changes that occurred in recent years. However, both theologies arrived at a limit. It’s necessary to go beyond. This «beyond» is the Indecent Theology that inserts fluid sexuality in the contemporary theological agenda.

Dynamic DNA nanodevices are designed to perform structure‐encoded motion actuated by a variety of different physicochemical stimuli. In this context, hybrid devices utilizing other components than DNA have the potential to considerably expand the library of functionalities. Here, the reversible reconfiguration of a DNA origami structure using the stimulus sensitivity of elastin‐like polypeptides is reported. To this end, a rectangular sheet made using the DNA origami technique is functionalized with these peptides and by applying changes in salt concentration the hydrophilic–hydrophobic phase transition of these peptides actuate the folding of the structure. The on‐demand and reversible switching of the rectangle …

In Staphylococcus aureus, the transcription factor CodY modulates the expression of hundreds of genes, including most virulence factors, in response to the availability of key nutrients like GTP and branched‐chain amino acids. Despite numerous studies examining how CodY controls gene expression directly or indirectly, virtually nothing is known about the extent to which CodY exerts its effect through small regulatory RNAs (sRNAs). Herein, we report the first set of sRNAs under the control of CodY. We reveal that staphylococcal sRNA RsaD is overexpressed >20‐fold in a CodY‐deficient strain in three S. aureus clinical isolates and in S. epidermidis. …
