Post-exertional malaise (PEM) is the hallmark clinical feature of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). PEM involves a constellation of substantially disabling signs and symptoms that occur in response to physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual over-exertion. Because PEM occurs in response to over-exertion, physiological measurements obtained during standardized exertional paradigms hold promise to contribute greatly to our understanding of the cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic states underlying PEM. In turn, information from standardized exertional paradigms can inform patho-etiologic studies and analeptic management strategies in people with ME/CFS. Several studies have been published that describe physiologic responses to exercise in people with ME/CFS, …

Infection Control In Total Knee Replacement Prosthesis Using Nitric Oxide Releasing Biomaterials, Ashley Widing Jan 2019

Infection Control In Total Knee Replacement Prosthesis Using Nitric Oxide Releasing Biomaterials, Ashley Widing

Master's Theses

Replacing a weight-bearing joint is accompanied by long procedures, even longer recovery times, and intensive monitoring. This burden increases after infection; a complication requiring revision surgeries and therefore extensive additional recovery time. Infection can present itself at any time during the process, making it hard to predict. Currently, a two-part revision surgery is completed by removing all infected tissue and implanting an antibiotic spacer. The spacer fills the joint gap and is removed prior to the revision total knee replacement. A revision total knee replacement follows the same procedure as the initial surgery. Not only is this detrimental to patient …

Unmanned Aerial-Vehicle-Based Measurement Of Urban Forests, Earle W. Isibue Jan 2019

Unmanned Aerial-Vehicle-Based Measurement Of Urban Forests, Earle W. Isibue

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Human and natural forces continually act on urban forests to producing changes that leading to trees being removed or replanted. Therefore, to manage the urban forest effectively, periodic inventories are needed to ensure that information about the urban forest is current and comprehensive. This task has traditionally been accomplished by manual ground-based field surveys, or more recently by lidar; however, these methods are expensive, either in terms of time, labor, or cost. This project proposes a novel method of using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to more accurately measure urban tree height and trunk diameter than is currently possible using conventional …

Using Reinforcement Learning In A Simulated Intelligent Tutoring System, Manohar Sai Jasti

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

I used reinforcement learning to investigate which categories of hints are most efficient in an intelligent tutoring system for human anatomy. Efficiency is defined as minimizing the time it takes the student to learn the material. When a student gives a wrong answer, the tutor can give them a text hint, a diagrammatic hint, or a video clip. Each type of hint takes a different amount of time to deliver and takes the student a different amount of time to understand.

I built a simulator for the intelligent tutoring system to collect data from simulated students. I implemented reinforcement learning, …

Mapping The Effects Of 5’ Untranslated Region Deletions On Translation Of 3a In Bmv Rna3, Courtney Marie Bozman

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Brome mosaic virus (BMV) is a positive sense, single-stranded RNA virus that infects a wide array of plant hosts globally including: wheat, oats, maize, barley, and rye. Since its discovery in the 1940s, BMV has served as a model organism in uncovering the modalities of viral infectivity, composition, translation, and replication. In many viruses, it is typically imperative to recruit cellular machinery to produce viral proteins as their coding capacity is limited. Therefore, there are sequences and structures within the leader sequences allow them to be competitive with the eukaryotic mRNAs. Although BMV has been thoroughly researched in these other …

Developing A Rational Peptide Ligand Design Method Using Cd13 As A Prototype Target Receptor, Md Zahir Uddin Jan 2019

Developing A Rational Peptide Ligand Design Method Using Cd13 As A Prototype Target Receptor, Md Zahir Uddin

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Structure based computational peptide design methods have gained significant interest in recent years with the availability of structural insights of protein-protein interactions obtained from the crystal structures. Most of these approaches design new peptide ligands by connecting the crucial amino acid residues from the protein interface and are generally not based on any predicted receptor-ligand interaction. In this work, a peptide design method based on the Knob-Socket model was used to identify the specific ligand residues packing into the receptor interface. This method enables rational peptide ligand design by predicting amino acid residues that will fit best at the binding …
