Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Platycladus orientalis (Cupressaceae) is a native tree species used widely for landscaping and afforestation in arid and semiarid areas in Asia. Ancient P. orientalis trees not only have an important humanistic and historical value but also have a significant scientific value in aging mechanism research. Mesophyll protoplasts are an important material for studies of plant regeneration, transient gene expression, and senescence. Although an easy and effective technique of mesophyll protoplast isolation from mature trees is urgently needed, the isolation parameters have great material specificity. The young tissue of plants is an ideal material for protoplast preparation. In this study, we …

The use of training systems for cherry trees is significantly important, as they form the basis of future shoots, which are potential producers of fruits. Numerous studies have been carried out on training systems for cherries around the world. It is well known that new training systems result in a shorter fruiting time and ease mechanical operations, such as harvesting and pruning. Unfortunately, new systems have never been tried for sweet cherry in Turkey. This study was aimed at determining the effect of different training systems, such as tall spindle axe (TSA), super spindle axe (SSA), upright fruiting offshoots (UFO), …

Identification And Validation Of Microsatellite Markers In Strawberry Tree(Arbutus Unedo L.), Pedro Fazenda, Ricardo Pereira, Maria Fonseca, Jorge Carlier, José Leitão

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo L.), an evergreen shrub/small tree of the family Ericaceae, is a main constituent of the Mediterranean basin flora; although it is also found in southwestern France, Macaronesia, and Ireland. The small fruits are edible but mostly used for preparation of preserves and jams, and for liquors such as the Portuguese traditional "aguardente de medronho". Traditionally cultivated by small farmers, often in consociation with Quercus sp., strawberry tree is presently emerging as a new important fruit crop cultivated in large orchards by modern export-oriented enterprises. This change of paradigm requires a growing role of plant breeding, upstream …

Diversity Of Avocado (Persea Americana Mill.) Cultivars From Antioquia (Northeastcolombia) And Comparison With A Worldwide Germplasm Collection, Gloria Patricia Cañas-Gutiérrez, Librada Alcaraz, Jose Ignacio Hormaza, Rafael Eduardo Arango- Isaza, Clara Inés Saldamando-Benjumea Jan 2019

Diversity Of Avocado (Persea Americana Mill.) Cultivars From Antioquia (Northeastcolombia) And Comparison With A Worldwide Germplasm Collection, Gloria Patricia Cañas-Gutiérrez, Librada Alcaraz, Jose Ignacio Hormaza, Rafael Eduardo Arango- Isaza, Clara Inés Saldamando-Benjumea

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, the genetic diversity of 90 avocado (Persea americana Mill) cultivars from Antioquia (Colombia) was compared to 67 germplasm collection accessions using 14 microsatellites. An average of 4.32 ± 2.0 alleles per locus was found, as observed in previous studies. The expected and observed heterozygosity ranges were 0.384-0.724 and 0.393-0.686, respectively. The Antioquian avocados were genetically structured according to an analysis of molecular variance test (fixation index (FST) = 0.054, P < 0.00001). An unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) dendrogram with FST paired data produced 2 clusters: one composed by Antioquian avocados and the other by the germplasm collection. Another UPGMA dendrogram with individual Nei-Li distances and additional STRUCTURE analysis separated the Antioquian avocados into 3 clusters (K = 3). Combining samples from the Colombian and germplasm collections produced K = 2. Genetic differentiations between the Antioquian and worldwide avocado germplasm collection could be due to crosses within the Antioquian avocados having been enhanced by insect pollinators, whereas avocados stored in the germplasm collection were constituted by cultivars with known genetic origins. Findings from this study demonstrated that criollo avocado genetics are unique in Antioquia, since the species has been naturally crossed in the field and its closest accession is from Guatemala. Nevertheless, it is important to continue genotyping this species in other locations in Colombia from Sylvester and cultivar populations of this crop to determine its origin.

A Multilayer Exponential Random Graph Modelling Approach For Weighted Networks, Alberto Caimo, Isabella Gollini Jan 2019

A Multilayer Exponential Random Graph Modelling Approach For Weighted Networks, Alberto Caimo, Isabella Gollini

Articles

A new modelling approach for the analysis of weighted networks with ordinal/polytomous dyadic values is introduced. Specifically, it is proposed to model the weighted network connectivity structure using a hierarchical multilayer exponential random graph model (ERGM) generative process where each network layer represents a different ordinal dyadic category. The network layers are assumed to be generated by an ERGM process conditional on their closest lower network layers. A crucial advantage of the proposed method is the possibility of adopting the binary network statistics specification to describe both the between-layer and across-layer network processes and thus facilitating the interpretation of the …

Genetic Analysis Of A Parasite Contact Zone In The Southwestern United States, Tanner Storbeck Jan 2019

Genetic Analysis Of A Parasite Contact Zone In The Southwestern United States, Tanner Storbeck

Honors Program Theses

Studies of cophylogeny (the mirroring of the evolutionary histories of two independent species) lies at the interface of ecology and evolution and therefore is inherently interesting to biologists. The actual mechanisms that lead to patterns cophylogeny are poorly understood. Chewing lice (Trichodectidae) and pocket gophers (Geomyidae) are a model system for the study of cophylogeny. The question to be addressed in this study centers around the fine-scale interactions between pocket gophers and chewing lice in the Southwest United States and whether different louse species actually hybridize within a zone of potential contact. DNA microsatellite techniques, DNA sequencing, PCR, and gel …

Intertwined Strands For Ecology In Planetary Health, Pierre Horwitz, Margot W. Parkes Jan 2019

Intertwined Strands For Ecology In Planetary Health, Pierre Horwitz, Margot W. Parkes

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Ecology is both blessed and burdened by romanticism, with a legacy that is multi-edged for health. The prefix ‘eco-’ can carry a cultural and political (subversive) baggage, associated with motivating environmental activism. Ecology is also practiced as a technical ‘science’, with quantitative and deterministic leanings and a biophysical emphasis. A challenge for planetary health is to avoid lapsing into, or rejecting, either position. A related opportunity is to adopt ecological thought that offers a rich entrance to understanding living systems: a relationality of connectedness, interdependence, and reciprocity to understand health in a complex and uncertain world. Planetary health offers a …

Bioethanol is one of the alternatives to fossil fuels. Bioethanol production from lignocellulose has advantages on source richness, but it has poor performance on the conversion yield. In order to destroy the structure of lignocellulose and promote the cellulose and other components release, lignocellulose treatment was necessarily prior to bioethanol fermentation. In this paper, eight methods for lignocellulose pretreatment were reviewed, including physical method, dilute acid pretreatment method, dilute alkali pretreatment method, steam pretreatment method, ammonia pretreatment methods, organic solvent pretreatment method, ionic liquid pretreatment method and biological pretreatment, and those principles and novel progresses were briefly introduced.

Targeting Lipoprotein Biogenesis: Considerations Towards Antimicrobials, Toufic El Arnaout, Tewfic Soulimane

Articles

Decades have passed without approval of a new antibiotic class. Several companies have recently halted related discovery efforts because of multiple obstacles. One promising route under research is to target the lipoprotein maturation pathway in light of major recent findings and the virulence roles of lipoproteins. To support the future design of selective drugs, considerations and priority-setting are established for the main lipoprotein processing enzymes (Lgt, LspA, and Lnt) based on microbiology, biochemistry, structural biology, chemical design, and pharmacology. Although not all bacterial species will be similarly impacted by drug candidates, several advantages make LspA a top target to pursue …

A Feasibility Study On Utilizing Data Science As An Advanced Lean Manufacturing Tool In The Biopharma Manufacturing Sector, Tanya Heerts

Graduate Research Papers

The critical understanding, on which all else hinges in the biopharmaceutical industry, is that value is only added when a drug or a biologic is produced as a safe, efficacious first-pass product, in an efficient and effective manner. Every other activity is an expense and a cost to the company. In a tightly regulated industry that is facing turbulent times, the need to reconcile rising costs while still maintaining quality within the processes and products is imperative within the biopharma manufacturing sector. Current literature suggests that data science will have major implications in the future of biopharmaceutical manufacturing, however this …

Decaying Organic Matter Did Not Remove Sublethal Effect Of Imidacloprid On Mating In Spalangia Endius (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), A Parasitoid Of Filth Flies, A. N. Kremer, Bethia H. King Jan 2019

Decaying Organic Matter Did Not Remove Sublethal Effect Of Imidacloprid On Mating In Spalangia Endius (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), A Parasitoid Of Filth Flies, A. N. Kremer, Bethia H. King

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Both the parasitoid wasp Spalangia endius Walker and the insecticide imidacloprid are used to control house flies. A recent study found that negative sublethal effects of imidacloprid on killing flies and on offspring production by this parasitoid wasp are eliminated when females have the opportunity to crawl through decaying matter. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed that the presence of decaying matter reduces the amount of pesticide on their bodies. This study examined whether this was also true for sublethal effects on mating. S. endius were exposed to a realistic concentration of imidacloprid that induces very low mortality. Then, individual parasitoids …

Passive acoustic technology has become a useful and cost-effective method to collect data with very high temporal resolution that can be used to detect the presence, distribution, and remotely monitor soniferous marine biodiversity. In order to maximize the potential of bioacoustic and soundscape research in the oceans, understanding the association between the different realms of sound sources, species-specific calls and behavioral context of sound production are fundamental. A previously unknown vocalization was associated with a behavioral display of lionfish (Pterois spp.) by recordings with synchronous audio and video at deep coral reefs in both Puerto Rico and the Florida …

Linking Petal Cell Shape To Pollinator Mode In Mimulus, Emma Bekele Jan 2019

Linking Petal Cell Shape To Pollinator Mode In Mimulus, Emma Bekele

Scripps Senior Theses

Reproduction is essential for all organisms. In plants, reproduction relies on pollination. In addition to large-scale traits such as shape and color, flowers may use traits imperceptible to the naked eye in order to attract pollinators. One such trait may be conical cell shape of petal cells. Previous work has identified conical petal cells as providing a foothold for foraging bees, suggesting that conical cell shape is an adaptation to bee pollination. However, this hypothesis has not been fully tested and requires development of a rigorous methodology for quantifying cell shape. Here, we utilize natural variation in pollinator mode in …

Digital Entrepreneurship In Two-Sided Markets. Insights From Real Estate Crowdfunding Platforms, Stanislav Mamonov

Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

While there is a growing body of research on the success factors in crowdfunding campaigns, much less is known about the factors that influence the success of crowdfunding platforms. We begin to address this gap in research by examining real estate crowdfunding platforms (RECPs) which connect real estate investors with real estate capital seekers. To understand how entrepreneurs leverage technology in this context, we drew on resource orchestration theory and we conducted a multi-case analysis across seven RECPs in the United States. We discovered that RECP founders and executives view technology as a focal resource orchestration mechanism that is critical …

Approach To Constitutional Principles And Environmental Discretion In Canada, Lynda Collins, Lorne Sossin Jan 2019

Approach To Constitutional Principles And Environmental Discretion In Canada, Lynda Collins, Lorne Sossin

Articles & Book Chapters

One of the most important and least scrutinized areas of environmental policy is the exercise of administrative discretion. Those committed to environmental action tend to focus on law reform, international treaties, and political commitments - for example, election proposals for carbon taxes and pipelines, or environmental protections in global protocols and trade agreements. Many proponents of stronger environmental protection have focused their attention on the goal of a constitutional amendment recognizing an explicit right to a healthy environment, while others seek recognition of environmental protection within existing Charter rights. As the rights conversation evolves, advocates must continue to grapple with …
