Quantifying White-Tailed Deer Density And Its Impacts On Agricultural Systems, Jonathan A. Matthews Jan 2019

Quantifying White-Tailed Deer Density And Its Impacts On Agricultural Systems, Jonathan A. Matthews

Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) commonly consume row crops, with yield losses often attributed to their browsing. Deer density and field morphology may predict yield losses within local areas. We sought to 1) determine the effects of deer browsing on corn and soybean yields and investigate if deer density or field morphology correlated to yield loss in western Kentucky, and 2) compare pellet-based distance sampling to game camera surveys to determine if a distance sampling technique could accurately estimate deer density during the growing season. Overall, deer reduced corn and soybean yields on one-half of surveyed properties. Deer density …

Modulation Of Inflammatory Cytokine, Chemokine, And Toll-Like Receptor Genes And Transcriptome Analysis Of Equine Endothelial Cells Following Infection With Equid Herpesvirus-1, And Equine Arteritis Virus., Saranajith Wangisa Dunuwille Jan 2019

Modulation Of Inflammatory Cytokine, Chemokine, And Toll-Like Receptor Genes And Transcriptome Analysis Of Equine Endothelial Cells Following Infection With Equid Herpesvirus-1, And Equine Arteritis Virus., Saranajith Wangisa Dunuwille

Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science

EHV-1 is a double-stranded DNA virus whereas EAV is a positive sense, single-stranded RNA virus. Therefore, genetically, they are very different from one another. However, both these viruses are endotheliotropic and thus, infect and replicates in equine endothelial cells resulting in vasculitis. Vasculitis is central to the pathogenesis of these two viruses. Thus, the main objective of this thesis was to investigate the inflammatory and innate immune responses of EECs that contribute towards the development of vasculitis following infection with EHV-1 and EAV in-vitro. Since proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines produced by endothelial cells play a significant role in the …

Evaluating Reforestation Options For Surface Mines In Appalachia, Joseph Frederick Jan 2019

Evaluating Reforestation Options For Surface Mines In Appalachia, Joseph Frederick

Mechanisms Of Type-I Ifn Inhibition: Equine Herpesvirus-1 Escape From The Antiviral Effect Of Type-1 Interferon Response In Host Cell, Fatai S. Oladunni

Theses and Dissertations--Veterinary Science

Equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) is one of the most important and prevalent viral pathogens of horses causing a major threat to the equine industry throughout most of the world. EHV-1 primarily causes respiratory disease but viral spread to distant organs enables the development of more severe sequelae; abortion and neurologic disease. In order to produce disease, EHV-1 has to overcome the innate barrier of the type-I interferon (IFN) system in host cells. However, the underlying mechanisms employed by EHV-1 to circumvent the type-I IFN response in host cells are not well understood. In this project study, using molecular techniques, we explored …

Beyond Telling: A Phenomenology Of Adoptive Parents' Adoption Communication Openness With Early Adolescents, Jane D. Samuel

Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences

Despite calls for increased Adoption Communication Openness (ACO) within the adoptive family, research indicates that families still struggle to accomplish the recommended elements and levels of openness. What could be holding families back from this key process? Three focus groups comprised of 17 adoptive parents of early adolescents (aged 10-14) who were age 0-2 at the time of placement were thematically coded. This inductive analysis revealed the complexity rooted in being —sometimes successfully and sometimes not—communicatively open. Four key themes emerged painting a vivid and rich picture of: a) the breadth and depth of this experience; b) the work entailed; …

Training Neural Networks Through The Integration Of Evolution And Gradient Descent, Gregory Morse Jan 2019

Training Neural Networks Through The Integration Of Evolution And Gradient Descent, Gregory Morse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Neural networks have achieved widespread adoption due to both their applicability to a wide range of problems and their success relative to other machine learning algorithms. The training of neural networks is achieved through any of several paradigms, most prominently gradient-based approaches (including deep learning), but also through up-and-coming approaches like neuroevolution. However, while both of these neural network training paradigms have seen major improvements over the past decade, little work has been invested in developing algorithms that incorporate the advances from both deep learning and neuroevolution. This dissertation introduces two new algorithms that are steps towards the integration of …

This study focused on providing a source to tap assessment of surface water systems with respect to (i) the use of alternative biomonitoring tools, (ii) disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation and control, and (iii) corrosion control. In the first study component, two water systems were microbiologically evaluated using adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence technology. It was determined that microbial ATP was useful as a surrogate for biomonitoring within a surface water system when paired with traditional methods. Although microbial activity differed between distribution systems that used either chloramine or chlorine disinfectant, in both cases flowrate and season affected microbial ATP values. In …

Multi-Modal Interfaces For Sensemaking Of Graph-Connected Datasets, Anthony Wehrer Jan 2019

Multi-Modal Interfaces For Sensemaking Of Graph-Connected Datasets, Anthony Wehrer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The visualization of hypothesized evolutionary processes is often shown through phylogenetic trees. Given evolutionary data presented in one of several widely accepted formats, software exists to render these data into a tree diagram. However, software packages commonly in use by biologists today often do not provide means to dynamically adjust and customize these diagrams for studying new hypothetical relationships, and for illustration and publication purposes. Even where these options are available, there can be a lack of intuitiveness and ease-of-use. The goal of our research is, thus, to investigate more natural and effective means of sensemaking of the data with …
