Snow covers Arctic and boreal regions (ABRs) for approximately 9 months of the year, thus snowscapes dominate the form and function of tundra and boreal ecosystems. In recent decades, Arctic warming has changed the snowcover's spatial extent and distribution, as well as its seasonal timing and duration, while also altering the physical characteristics of the snowpack. Understanding the little studied effects of changing snowscapes on its wildlife communities is critical. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the urgent need for, and suggest an approach for developing, an improved suite of temporally evolving, spatially distributed snow products to help …

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of sensor velocity and target height above ground level on height measurement error when using a multi-channel LiDAR sensor. A linear motion system was developed to precisely control the dynamics of the LiDAR sensor in an effort to remove uncertainty in the LiDAR position and velocity while under motion. The linear motion system allowed the LiDAR to translate forward and backward in one direction parallel to the ground. A user control interface was developed to operate the system under different velocity profiles and to log LiDAR data synchronous to the …

Colonization of eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) by tunicates can lead to reduced plant growth and survival. Several of the tunicate species that are found on eelgrass in the northwest Atlantic are highly aggressive colonizers, and range expansions are predicted in association with climate-change induced increases in seawater temperature. In 2017, we surveyed tunicates within eelgrass meadows at 33 sites from New Jersey to Newfoundland. Eight tunicate species were identified colonizing eelgrass, of which four were non-native and one was cryptogenic. The most common species (Botrylloides violaceus and Botryllus schlosseri) occurred from New York to Atlantic Canada. Tunicate faunas attached to …

Variations In The Dragonfly Microbiome Through Life Stages And Its Ability To Harbor Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria, Sarah Russell
Variations In The Dragonfly Microbiome Through Life Stages And Its Ability To Harbor Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria, Sarah Russell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Juvenile dragonflies (nymphs) may possess the ability to pass their microbiome to the adult life stage through metamorphosis. If this is so, the environment in which the nymph develops may have an effect on the adult microbiome. In this study, the gut microbiomes of 13 species of dragonfly were compared across life stages and when collected from environments at different levels of urbanization. The gut of each dragonfly was removed, DNA extracted, and a portion of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplified and sequenced. Gut suspensions were also plated on antibiotic amended plates to determine the potential for dragonflies to …

Minimum Number Of Individuals: A Methodological Comparison Using Human Remains From Caves Branch Rockshelter In The Cayo District Of Belize, Caitlin Elizabeth Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of human remains in archaeological contexts is often complicated by the presence of highly fragmented and commingled remains. The standard methods used to help quantify the number of individuals and elements in these contexts are based upon the segmentation of whole bones. The methods provide standardization and are flexible enough to allow for the idiosyncratic nature of each context. However, this results in a lack of transparency, which is necessary to reanalyze the same sample or to compare “like” contexts, as the data collected will vary.

Physical And Chemical Trace Evidence From 3d-Printed Firearms, And Use Of A Quadcopter For Targeted Sampling Of Gaseous Mercury In The Atmosphere, Oscar Beauchamp Black
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My forensic research resulted in the first peer-reviepaper to address the forensic challenges presented by 3D-printed polymer firearms. The work involved a systematic approach to the analysis of evidence stemming from 3D-printed firearms filling a critical void in current forensic knowledge. We used DART-MS to characterize the polymer evidence left behind by 3D-printed firearms as well as an evaluation of pre-existing firearm and toolmark techniques and fingerprint analysis. We demonstrated that 3D-printed firearms leave behind characteristic polymer residue on cartridge cases bullets and the receiving surface which can be identified using DART-MS. The culmination of the work includes a database …

Bacterioplankton Biogeography Of The Mississippi River Basin, Jason Taylor Payne
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bacterioplankton are important structural and functional components of river networks yet their biogeographical patterns in these systems are largely unknown. Using Illumina sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene we characterized variation in bacterioplankton community alpha diversity (within-sample richness of operational taxonomic units OTUs) and beta diversity (between-sample differences in composition) (1) along a 1 300-km downstream reach of the Mississippi River (2) over a range of temporal scales in the Lower Mississippi River (LMR) and (3) along cross-sectional transects repeated monthly for six months across the LMR floodplain. Particle-associated assemblages were richer in bacterial OTUs and more productive than free-living …
Data Sharing At Scale: A Heuristic For Affirming Data Cultures, Lindsay Poirier, Brandon Costelloe-Kuehn
Data Sharing At Scale: A Heuristic For Affirming Data Cultures, Lindsay Poirier, Brandon Costelloe-Kuehn
Statistical and Data Sciences: Faculty Publications
Addressing the most pressing contemporary social, environmental, and technological challenges will require integrating insights and sharing data across disciplines, geographies, and cultures. Strengthening international data sharing networks will not only demand advancing technical, legal, and logistical infrastructure for publishing data in open, accessible formats; it will also require recognizing, respecting, and learning to work across diverse data cultures. This essay introduces a heuristic for pursuing richer characterizations of the “data cultures” at play in international, interdisciplinary data sharing. The heuristic prompts cultural analysts to query the contexts of data sharing for a particular discipline, institution, geography, or project at seven …
Investigating Neurogenesis As A Veritable Epigenetic Endophenotype For Alzheimer's Disease, Layne Wells
Investigating Neurogenesis As A Veritable Epigenetic Endophenotype For Alzheimer's Disease, Layne Wells
Scripps Senior Theses
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease, characterized by progressive amyloid plaque aggregation, neurofibrillary tangles, and cortical tissue death. As the prevalence of AD is projected to climb in coming years, there is a vested interest in identifying endophenotypes by which to improve diagnostics and direct clinical interventions. The risk for complex disorders, such as AD, is influenced by multiple genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Significant strides have been made in identifying genetic variants linked to AD through the genome-wide association study (GWAS). It has been estimated in more recent years, however, that GWAS-identified variants account for limited …
“Alexa, Are You Conscious?”: Exploring The Possibility Of Machine Consciousness, Emma Cornwell
“Alexa, Are You Conscious?”: Exploring The Possibility Of Machine Consciousness, Emma Cornwell
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis seeks to answer the following question: “could a machine be capable of consciousness?” I begin to tackle this question by providing a presumed definition of consciousness, employing Bernard Baars’ Global Workspace Theory. Next, I look to various discussions of machine intelligence and whether or not this would be sufficient for categorizing a machine as conscious. And lastly, I explore the notion that the human brain may be a sort of computational system itself and the implications this notion has for the potential that non-human systems may achieve consciousness.
Through these sections, I ultimately conclude that a machine could …

Techniques Used To Increase Recapture Rates Of Dwarf Seahorses (Hippocampus Zosterae) In Tampa Bay: Implications For Population Estimates And Movement Patterns, Heather D. Masonjones, Emily Rose, Michael C. Masonjones
Gulf and Caribbean Research
Mark-recapture techniques were used to estimate population size and movement patterns of the Dwarf Seahorse (Hippocampus zosterae, Syngnathidae), a species native to the Gulf of Mexico and under review by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS, USA) for consideration under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Previous collection methods have failed to yield recapture rates high enough to use for population estimation, hypothesized to be a result of longer time durations between collections and large distances surveyed in previous studies. In this report, Dwarf Seahorses in Tampa Bay, Florida (USA) were sampled with a pushnet in a small, well-marked …
How Visual Confidence On Global Motion Is Affected By Local Motion Ambiguity And Type Of Motion Noise, And Its Correlation With Autistic Trait Tendency?, Man Wai, Angela Lam
How Visual Confidence On Global Motion Is Affected By Local Motion Ambiguity And Type Of Motion Noise, And Its Correlation With Autistic Trait Tendency?, Man Wai, Angela Lam
Bachelor of Social Sciences – Senior Theses
Perceptual confidence has been found to correlate with task performance in general, and is believed to be independent of stimulus features. However, certain stimulus feature could induce a subjective sense of uncertainty, which could potentially influence confidence judgments beyond task performance. The present studies aimed at assessing the effects of the ambiguity of local motion signals on perceptual confidence on a global-motion task. Participants first discriminated the global motion directions of two multiple-aperture, global-motion patterns, one generated using multiple Gabor elements and the other using multiple Plaid elements. They then performed a two-interval, forced-choice confidence task by choosing which of …

Life Cycle Of Lucilia Sericata (Meigen 1826) Collected From Andean Mountains, Washington Pruna, Paulina Guarderas, David A. Donoso, Álvaro Barragán
Neotropical Biodiversity
In forensic science, fly larval size and developmental time help to estimate the time elapsed since a person has died until the body is found, generally known as minimum postmortem interval (mPMI). Lucilia sericata (Meigen 1826) is a cosmopolitan and necrophagous fly species (Diptera: Calliphoridae) that usually colonizes decomposing stages. In this study, we determined life tables parameters of L. sericata (e.g. fly survivorship, mortality and life expectancy) and developmental time of different larval stages under controlled temperatures. Cohorts of 12 eggs (12 x 10 repetitions) of L. sericata were exposed to 8°C, 10°C, 18°C, 25°C, 30°C, 35°C, and 37 …

Predicting Suitable Nesting Sites For The Black Caiman (Melanosuchus Niger Spix 1825) In The Central Amazon Basin, Gabriela Paola Ribeiro Banon, Gerald Jean Francis Banon, Francisco Villamarín, Eduardo Moraes Arraut, Gabriel Massaine Moulatlet, Camilo Daleles Rennó, Lise Christine Banon, Boris Marioni, Evlyn Márcia Leão De Moraes Novo
Neotropical Biodiversity
After many years of illegal hunting and commercialization, the populations of the Black caiman (Melanosuchus niger) have been recovering during the last four decades due to the enforcement of a legislation that inhibits their international commercialization. Protecting nesting sites, in which vulnerable life forms (as reproductive females, eggs, and neonates) spend considerable time, is one of the most appropriate conservation actions aimed at preserving caiman populations. Thus, identifying priority areas for this activity should be the primary concern of conservationists. As caiman nesting sites are often found across the areas with difficult access, collecting nest information requires extensive and costly …
Influence Of Shaded Conditions On Development Of Asteraceae Species Native To Kansas, Aline Rodrigues De Queiroz
Influence Of Shaded Conditions On Development Of Asteraceae Species Native To Kansas, Aline Rodrigues De Queiroz
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
to the heterogeneity of habitats, all plants are exposed to at least some degree of shade during their lifetime. Reduced light intensity, drops in R:FR ratio, and limited blue light are cues for plants to perceive competition; the shade avoidance syndrome (SAS) is common for grassland species while shade tolerance (ST) is common for forest species when competition is perceived. SAS is characterized by elongation of stems and petioles, reduced branches, decreased leaf area, decreased shoot biomass, and increased number of ramets. ST is characterized by little elongation of stems and petioles, high chlorophyll content and high chlorophyll a/b ratio …
Prion Protein Gene Polymorphisms In The Alpha-Helical Region In Feral Pigs From Texas, Maram Alsmady
Prion Protein Gene Polymorphisms In The Alpha-Helical Region In Feral Pigs From Texas, Maram Alsmady
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Prion diseases are a group of infectious, incurable, fatal neurodegenerative disorders, including scrapie in sheep, chronic wasting disease in deer, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in humans. A key event in prion disease is the conformational transition of the cellular prion protein (PrPC) into the pathogenic isoform (PrPSC). Prion disease occurrence depends mainly on the interaction between the host prion protein (PrPC) and the prion strain (PrPSC). It was hypothesized that prion gene polymorphisms correlate with an organism’s susceptibility to prion disease, which may be related to the overall stability of the α-helical …

For the last decade, remedial spatial visualization training has been offered to first-year engineering students in traditional classroom settings where students attend class and interact face-to-face with an instructor and peers. An alternative to the traditional pedagogical approach is a multi-modal blended learning format that combines in-class instruction with videos that can be viewed at the student’s convenience. The new setting affords students the opportunity to repeatedly revisit the basic instruction at the time and place of their choosing. This case study investigated student outcomes in a blended multi-modal Introduction to Spatial Visualization course that integrated video lectures; free-hand sketching …
Effects Of Fragmentation On Species Retention In National Parks, Liz Tanner
Effects Of Fragmentation On Species Retention In National Parks, Liz Tanner
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The North American landscape is becoming increasingly fragmented, resulting in habitat patches with decreased area and increased isolation. Often, these patches exist as protected areas, such as national parks. The Theory of Island Biogeography is frequently used as a model for these patches, where each park serves as an ‘island’ surrounded by a ‘sea’ of human-altered habitats. As such, species richness and extinctions in a park might be explained by its area. For this study, I used regression models to examine the relationship between richness and area, as well as extinctions and area, for mammals and birds in national parks. …
The Effect Of Vegetative Structure On Nest-Burrow Selection By The Western Burrowing Owl: Comparing Traditional Methods To Photogrammetry With An Unmanned Aerial System, Dylan J. Steffen
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The shortgrass prairie ecoregion in the United States has been reduced to 52% of its historical extent, contributing to reduced habitat for native species. One such species is the Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia). The Western Burrowing Owl subspecies (A. c. hypugaea) is listed as a Species of Special Concern in nearly every western and midwestern state, including Kansas where it is designated as a Tier II Species of Greatest Conservation Need. Habitat destruction due to conversion to cropland, increasing use of pesticides, and reduction in burrowing mammal abundance are the primary threats that have led to …

Size And Age Structure Of Introduced Populations Of Blue Catfish (Ictalurus Furcatus) In Two Kansas Reservoirs And Implications For Management, Ernesto Flores
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
ABSTRACT
The introduction of a new fish species into an aquatic ecosystem can bring about many challenges for fisheries managers. Questions might arise for the manager regarding the initial sportfish survival rate, grow rate, reproduction and recruitment, and what kind of impact will the introduction have on the already established populations found in the water body. A new population of fish is often protected using length limit regulations, allowing biologists to gain insight on whether the population will be self-sustaining or in need of periodic stockings. Age and growth information is used to understand population dynamics, estimate annual mortality and …
Rna Interference Of Three Genes Of The Unfolded Protein Response: Activating Factor Of Transcription 4, Eukaryotic Translation Initiation Factor 2-Alpha Kinase, And Inositol-Requiring Enzyme 1 In Acyrthosiphon Pisum, Jared Ridder
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Activating Transcription Factor 4 (ATF4) is a transcription factor that can act as both an activator or repressor and is a critical component of the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) and Amino Acid Response (AAR) pathways. Inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1) is an Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) membrane-bound kinase/endoribonuclease that functions as a sensor of unfolded protein and is the most conserved component of the UPR in eukaryotes. Eukaryotic Initiation Factor-2-alpha Kinase (PERK) is an ER membrane bound kinase that phosphorylates eukaryotic initiation factor upon activation of the UPR causing downregulation of protein synthesis. It was hypothesized that introduction of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) …

In this study, I examined how the spatiotemporal distribution of spider webs and diet changed in a lake riparian zone with increasing distance from an aquatic resource. I surveyed twenty, one-hundred meter transects along the perimeters of Sanford and Escanaba lakes (Wisconsin). Overall, spider web abundance was highest near the lakes and decreased moving into the adjacent forest. Horizontal orb webs, vertical orb webs, and mesh webs showed strong negative relationships with distance from the lakes. Aquatic insects composed an average 36-64% of spider diet for all spider families throughout the riparian zone, suggesting that some spider families are selecting …

Magnesium is an important divalent metal cation that is involved in numerous cellular functions. The details of cellular Mg2+ regulation, homeostasis and transport remain unclear. Magnesium transporter protein (MagT1) is a Mg2+ transporter and deficiency of this protein has been reported to lead to impaired Mg2+ influx and a decreased cytoplasmic [Mg2+]. Transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) is a ubiquitously expressed membrane protein containing a channel pore and a C-terminal alpha-type serine/threonine protein kinase domain. Importantly, TRPM7 channel is believed to conduct both Mg2+ and Ca2+. In the present study, we investigated if TRPM7 can be used as a …
