Diversifying Cornfields By Interseeding Cover Crops: Practical Implications And The Response Of Invertebrate Communities, Michael Bredeson Jan 2019

Diversifying Cornfields By Interseeding Cover Crops: Practical Implications And The Response Of Invertebrate Communities, Michael Bredeson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The lack of suitable habitat conditions for beneficial organisms in simplified agroecosystems leads to unstable invertebrate communities and overreliance on chemical control of herbivores. It is possible to manage pest populations without agrichemicals by manipulating farmland so that herbivores are impaired by plant-driven bottom-up and enemy-driven top-down antagonisms. Interseeding cover crops between established crop rows is a method used by farmers to improve habitat suitability for natural enemies and hinder host-finding, feeding and movement by herbivores. Here I address three important research gaps related to interseeding cover crops. A calcium carbonate seed coating, used to improve seed-broadcasting efficiency, was tested …

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Carvedilol On The Thioredoxin Pathway In H9c2 Rat Cardiomyocytes, Metab Alharbi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The thioredoxin (Trx) system is an endogenous antioxidant system that affects cell function and survival through controlling cellular redox status. Trx and TrxR are the main enzymes in this system while thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP) is a negative regulator. This study’s goal was to better understand the Trx system’s involvement in the cardiovascular disease and modulate the pathway through drug treatment. Carvedilol is a non-selective β-blocker that also exhibits antioxidant properties, but the exact mechanism of the antioxidant effect is still unclear. H9c2 rat cardiomyocytes were used to examine the effect of carvedilol on the Trx system under normal conditions. …

Stoichiometric Homeostasis In Two Native And Two Invasive South Dakotan Grasses, Joshua Thonas Harvey Jan 2019

Stoichiometric Homeostasis In Two Native And Two Invasive South Dakotan Grasses, Joshua Thonas Harvey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increased nutrient availability has been widely linked to the success of invasive plants, however a general mechanism explaining these observations is lacking. Stoichiometric homeostasis (H), which is the regulation of internal nutrient concentrations, has been used to explain changes in plant community diversity under alterations in nutrient availability. One hypothesis holds that plants with high regulation (larger H) decrease in abundance in nutrient enriched conditions but are stable in nutrient deficient and drought conditions, likely due to extensive root systems. Additionally, plants with low regulation (lower H) increase in abundance under nutrient enriched conditions but are sensitive to drought …

Development Of Tissue-Derived Biomaterial ‘Cornea-Ecmix’: Its Utility In The Management Of Corneal Diseases, Somshuvra Bhattacharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Transparent cornea, at the front of the eye, mediates vision by refracting incoming light. Due to its anatomical position, cornea is susceptible to a variety of physical and chemical insults. Severe damage caused to cornea due to trauma or disease conditions can impair vision. While the cornea’s inherent repair mechanism restores partial vision loss, transplantation is the only viable treatment option if its transparency is completely lost. A global shortage of transplantable donor tissues necessitates the need for the development of functional corneal prosthetics. As cornea mostly is made up of extracellular matrix (ECM), several studies have explored the utility …

Thiol Specific Fluorogenic Agents For Live Cell Subcellular Organelle Thiol Imaging, Yahya Alqahtani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Thiols or sulfhydryl groups (-SH) play a significant role in protein structures and functions. The unique properties of a thiol group are the basis for its roles in cellular functions. Structurally, thiols are divided into protein thiols (PSH) and non-protein thiols (NPSH). NPSH include glutathione, cysteine, and homocysteine. Thiols are distributed in an uneven manner in the cell and subcellular organelles. Disturbance of thiol levels has been associated with serious diseases such as cancer, aging, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer disease, liver damage, and edema. The significant roles of thiols in the biological system have stimulated the development of various approaches to …

Long-Acting Intraductal Drug Delivery Systems For The Breast, Mibin Joseph Jan 2019

Long-Acting Intraductal Drug Delivery Systems For The Breast, Mibin Joseph

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the US. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a premalignant lesion that has not metastasized through the regional lymph nodes to other organs. Currently, all breast cancers including localized breast cancers are treated with the same aggressive therapy. Localized drug delivery by direct intraductal injections into the mammary ducts can achieve high drug concentration at the target site. However, poor retention of drugs in the ducts limits the successful translation of this approach to the clinic. To this end, the main goal of this dissertation is to develop …

The Effect Of Proteolytic Queues On Antibiotic Tolerance And Persistence Cells Population In Escherichia Coli, Alawiah Abualrahi Jan 2019

The Effect Of Proteolytic Queues On Antibiotic Tolerance And Persistence Cells Population In Escherichia Coli, Alawiah Abualrahi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A major contributing factor to the abundance of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and failed antibiotic treatment is survival due to antibiotic tolerance and persistence. Antibiotic tolerance is a widespread phenomenon that enables cells to survive treatment without carrying a resistance gene. This phenomenon renders antibiotic treatments less effective and facilitates antibiotic resistance. We are particularly interested in proteases, responsible for degradation of proteins, because of their known relationship to tolerance and persistence. Here, we examine the effects of proteases and antibiotic survival using queueing theory, in which one type of customer competes for processing by servers, that has traditionally been applied to …

Prairie Dogs And Livestock In Rangeland Systems: Balancing Biodiversity And Production In The Northern Mixed-Grass Prairie, Jameson Robert Brennan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A major constraint of beef production within the Standing Rock Reservation has been identified as a reduction in rangeland quality due in large part to wide-scale colonization by black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). The desire exists within the community to design a holistic framework which incorporates livestock management with the goal of increasing production and rangeland health while still maintaining increased diversity associated with prairie dogs. Prairie dogs reduce the carrying capacity of cattle on rangelands by up to 50% on occupied hectares through direct consumption of vegetation and waste due to clipping to improve detection of predators. Livestock stocking …

Analysis Of The Molecular Mechanisms Governing Fcγ Receptor Activation On The Surfaces Of Macrophages By Advanced Optical Microscopy, Elizabeth Michelle Bailey Jan 2019

Analysis Of The Molecular Mechanisms Governing Fcγ Receptor Activation On The Surfaces Of Macrophages By Advanced Optical Microscopy, Elizabeth Michelle Bailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Therapeutic antibodies are achieving new levels of therapeutic success in treating cancers and immunological disorders by antibody engagement of Fc receptor-directed immune responses. Conversely, inhibiting autoantibody induced Fc receptor activation is an attractive approach to treat autoimmune diseases. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies are often the principal subclass used in therapeutic antibodies and associated with autoimmune pathologies because of their long circulation and potent effector functions, including activation of the Fcγ Receptor (FcγR). Thus, a thorough understanding of the FcγR activation is required to improve the efficacy of immunotherapies and to mitigate autoimmunities. It is well established that FcγR clustering is …

Validation Of Candidate Loci For Maize Regrowability And Selection Of Near Isogenic Lines For The Loci, Tajbir Raihan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Developing perennial grain crops is an effective way for sustainable agriculture and it can be a tool for the betterment of the overall ecosystem. To understand how perenniality works in perennial species, we made a cross between Zea diploperennis and maize (Z. mays) inbred line B73. F1 hybrids produced from this cross were selfed to get the F2 population and later the F2 population underwent Genotyping-By- Sequencing (GBS) analysis. Based on the candidate loci identified on chromosome 2 and chromosome 7 from GBS, SNP-specific markers were developed from the candidate locus interval and used to genotype the F2 …

Biology

Global climate change is rapidly altering coastal marine ecosystems that are important for food production. A comprehensive understanding of how organisms will respond to these complex environmental changes can come only from observing and studying species within their natural environment. To this end, the effects of environmental drivers—pH, dissolved oxygen content, salinity, and temperature—on Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas physiology were evaluated in an outplant experiment. Sibling juvenile oysters were outplanted to eelgrass and unvegetated habitat at 5 different estuarine sites within the Acidification Nearshore Monitoring Network in Washington State, USA, to evaluate how regional environmental drivers influence molecular physiology. Within …

Characterisation Of Chitin In The Cuticle Of A Velvet Worm (Onychophora), Hartmut Greven, Murat Kaya, İdri̇s Sargin, Talat Baran, Reinhardt Møbjerg Kristensen, Martin Vinther Sorensen

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We characterize the trunk cuticle of velvet worms of the Peripatoides novaezealandiae-group (Onychophora) using SEM, TEM, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TEM and SEM revealed a relatively uniform organization of the delicate cuticle that is covered by numerous bristled and nonbristled papillae with ribbed scales arranged in transverse rows. The cuticle consists of a very thin multilayered epicuticle of varying appearance followed by the largely fibrous procuticle. The irregularly arranged nanofibres of isolated cuticular chitin seen by SEM are considered as bundles of chitin fibres. FT-IR and TGA showed that the chitin is of the α-type. …

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Students’ Beliefs About Knowledge And Knowing: Findings From Three Masters Level Programs In The Us, Diane M. Long, Anita W. Mitchell, Carla Chase, Bernadette Mineo

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

One of the expected outcomes of higher education for all entry-level occupational therapy (OT) students is to develop the capacity to think critically and engage in complex clinical reasoning. Beliefs about the justification of knowledge (epistemic cognition) and the nature of knowledge (ontological cognition) underlie the ability to develop sophisticated ways of thinking. There is a scarcity of research specific to occupational therapy students in the literature related to epistemic and ontological cognition. Based on a discussion prompted during an AOTA Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) workshop in 2014, OT faculty members from three entry-level occupational therapy …

Disordered Eating Habits, Emotion Regulation, And Theory Of Mind In Undergraduate Students, Brianna Borri Jan 2019

Disordered Eating Habits, Emotion Regulation, And Theory Of Mind In Undergraduate Students, Brianna Borri

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Theory of Mind (ToM), the ability to recognize and attribute mental states to oneself and others, has been found to be impaired in a number of different psychological disorders (Bora et al. 2009). Evaluating ToM in a population suffering from eating disorders, however, has proven less consistent; some Anorexia Nervosa patients show ToM deficits compared to healthy controls (Russell et al. 2009) and others perform similarly (Tchanturia et al. 2004). A common consensus not only seems to be lacking within the literature on ToM and Anorexia Nervosa, but within the broader family of eating disorders as well (e.g., Bulimia Nervosa; …

A Glimpse Of Casual Queerness: The Radical Progress Of Queer Visibility In Weimar Film And The Inevitable Backlash That Followed, Claire Colburn Jan 2019

A Glimpse Of Casual Queerness: The Radical Progress Of Queer Visibility In Weimar Film And The Inevitable Backlash That Followed, Claire Colburn

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

In looking back at German history, the Weimar Era and the 1920s, in particular, are often regarded as a time of unrestricted frivolity and the catharsis of post-war anxiety. In retrospect, it can be temptingly easy to credit the changing political landscape and liberalization of German society between 1918 and 1933 as a brief but inherently doomed moment of progressivism that necessarily would give way to a strident, reactionary backlash. Often, the increased visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ individuals during this time is regarded as a symptom of the “anything goes” attitude for which the Weimar Era has been famous. …

Drinking In The Dark: Voluntary Co-Consumption Of Nicotine And Alcohol For Binge-Like Drinking Behavior In Mice, Katherine Benson Jan 2019

Drinking In The Dark: Voluntary Co-Consumption Of Nicotine And Alcohol For Binge-Like Drinking Behavior In Mice, Katherine Benson

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Alcohol and nicotine are two of the most commonly abused drugs across the United States. Given the high rates of comorbidity, it remains a pressing public health concern to determine how the two drugs interact within the CNS, and how this impacts addictive behavior. The present study investigated the effect of comorbid abuse of nicotine and alcohol on stress and anxiety-like withdrawal symptoms, as both are associated with increased rates of relapse. A voluntary co-consumption, two-bottle choice paradigm was used with nicotine and alcohol to induce binge-like drinking behavior in mice following the drinking in the dark (DID) model of …

Characterization Of Peroxidase And Catalase Genes In Defense Mechanisms Of Physcomitrella Patens, Lauren Ciulla Jan 2019

Characterization Of Peroxidase And Catalase Genes In Defense Mechanisms Of Physcomitrella Patens, Lauren Ciulla

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and the hypersensitive response (HR) are two important induced defense mechanisms in plants. SAR is the development of an enhanced resistance to a pathogen due to a prior encounter. It results in faster and more effective defensive action within the plant upon a second-time pathogen attack. HR is a plant defense mechanism that utilizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) to attack pathogens at the site of an infection. ROS can be generated in many ways; however, it is specifically known that plants use the enzyme peroxidase to generate the ROS hydrogen peroxide during HR. Plants also use …

Soil Health Indicators And Sustainable Practices On Indy Urban Farms: An Investigation Of Ecosystem Functionality, Rebecca Lewis Jan 2019

Soil Health Indicators And Sustainable Practices On Indy Urban Farms: An Investigation Of Ecosystem Functionality, Rebecca Lewis

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Urban agriculture is capable of restoring ecosystem services like food production, recreation, and clean soil and water to cities. Urban farms in particular can help relieve pressure for areas with limited food access, also known as food desserts. This is especially important to the community of Indianapolis because the city is tied for the most food desert areas within a U.S. metropolitan area. To help a community, an urban farm must have healthy, nutrient rich soils. Nitrogen is the most limiting nutrient for plants when it comes to growth and development. Plants cannot produce nitrogen; they acquire the mineral by …

"Chicas Raras:" A Comparative Literary Study Of Historical Spanish And 21st Century Feminism, Serenity Dzubay Jan 2019

"Chicas Raras:" A Comparative Literary Study Of Historical Spanish And 21st Century Feminism, Serenity Dzubay

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

How have women learned to rebel creatively against male-dominated political structures when their public voices are silenced? How has literature aided in feminist rhetoric and helped to protest the patriarchy? In 1987, Carmen Martín Gaite created the term “chica rara” to describe female protagonists in novels who revolted against their gendered positions in society. Women of Spain have faced severe repression of identity due to the Franco regime; however, his oppressive ideologies helped to produce a rich history in feminist protest through literature from Spanish authors who I would argue are real-life chicas raras, because they rejected their traditional roles …

Case Studies Of Potential Reference Materials In Cultural Heritage Science, Heidi Kastenholz Jan 2019

Case Studies Of Potential Reference Materials In Cultural Heritage Science, Heidi Kastenholz

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The study of cultural heritage objects requires reference materials for comparison in order to determine the identity of chemical compounds in historically/culturally significant artifacts. The reference materials available today can be inaccurately labeled, can contain inauthentic compounds, or can simply be formed differently than what the labeled material should be. Utilizing the laboratory at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, three case studies were conducted over three different potential reference materials in order to properly identify each of the three materials being focused on here. Based on the analysis, the labels for these materials often do not match the …

Determining The Role Of Mutant P53-Mediated Inflammation In Hematopoietic Stem Cell Expansion, Katherine Strube Jan 2019

Determining The Role Of Mutant P53-Mediated Inflammation In Hematopoietic Stem Cell Expansion, Katherine Strube

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) increases with age and occurs when a single mutant hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) contributes to a significant clonal proportion of mature blood lineages. CHIP is associated with increased risks of de novo and therapy-related hematological neoplasms, suggesting that mutations identified in CHIP likely drive disease development. Acquired somatic mutations in the TP53 gene, which encodes the tumor suppressor protein p53, rank in the top five among mutations identified in CHIP. The Liu lab recently showed that TP53 mutations identified in CHIP promote HSC expansion. Previous studies have examined the possible cell-intrinsic mechanisms by which …
