Public Health And Personal Choice: The Ethics Of Vaccine Mandates And Parental Refusal In The United States, Rebecca Horan, Jonelle Depetro Jan 2019

Public Health And Personal Choice: The Ethics Of Vaccine Mandates And Parental Refusal In The United States, Rebecca Horan, Jonelle Depetro

2019 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity – Documents

In January 2019 The World Health Organization (WHO) released its list Ten threats to global health in 2019. For the first time ever, vaccine hesitancy, “the reluctance or refusal to vaccinate despite the availability of vaccine services” is officially on the list.1 Although great progress has been made in reducing or eradicating various diseases such as polio, measles, and whooping cough (pertussis), the number of parents refusing vaccination for their children is growing rapidly in what is now often referred to as the “anti-vaccination movement” ( or “anti-vax movement”). This is causing a threat to public health as …

The Relationship Between Participation In Community-Level Service-Learning And Career Plans To Practice In Underserved Areas Among 4th-Year Medical Students, Felicia Bolden Mobley Jan 2019

The Relationship Between Participation In Community-Level Service-Learning And Career Plans To Practice In Underserved Areas Among 4th-Year Medical Students, Felicia Bolden Mobley

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Service-learning is a form of experiential learning that allows students to combine knowledge acquired in the classroom with community-level experiences. In medical education, service-learning provides medical students the opportunity to apply clinical knowledge to health-related experiences within communities in an effort to prepare them to address the health needs of communities after they graduate. Research shows that without service-learning opportunities, some medical students may lack a level of compassion and empathy that is necessary to treat medically underserved patients.

A secondary data analysis was conducted using 4th-year medical students’ survey responses on the Association of American Medical Colleges Graduation Questionnaire …

The Lived Experiences Of Transgender Higher Education Professionals, Jessica L. Ward

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of transgender higher Education professionals. There have been great strides in the acceptance and inclusion of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals. However, the acceptance level of transgender individuals has not reached the same level as the LGB community. Utilizing a qualitative phenomenological approach, participants who identified as transgender were interviewed to understand their experiences as professionals in higher Education institutions. As a result of the semi-structured interview process, six shared experiences emerged: understanding identity, transitioning in higher Education, job search, mental health, rejection, and support. From these categories three …

Dual specificity phosphatase 6 (DUSP6) is a protein phosphatase that deactivates extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Since the ovarian cancer biomarker human epididymis protein 4 (HE4) interacts with the ERK pathway, we sought to determine the relationship between DUSP6 and HE4 and elucidate DUSP6’s role in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Viability assays revealed a significant decrease in cell viability with pharmacological inhibition of DUSP6 using (E/Z)-BCI hydrochloride in ovarian cancer cells treated with carboplatin or paclitaxel, compared to treatment with either agent alone. Quantitative PCR was used to evaluate levels of ERK pathway response genes to BCI in combination with recombinant HE4 …

Epithelial Ovarian Cancer (EOC) is associated with dismal survival rates due to the fact that patients are frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage and eventually become resistant to traditional chemotherapeutics. Hence, there is a crucial need for new and innovative therapies. Septin-2, a member of the septin family of GTP binding proteins, has been characterized in EOC for the first time and represents a potential future target. Septin-2 was found to be overexpressed in serous and clear cell human patient tissue compared to benign disease. Stable septin-2 knockdown clones developed in an ovarian cancer cell line exhibited a significant decrease …

Probing The Effect Of Bulky Lesion-Induced Replication Fork Conformational Heterogeneity Using 4-Aminobiphenyl-Modified Dna, Ang Cai, Ke Bian, Fangyi Chen, Qi Tang, Rachel Carley, Deyu Li, Bongsup P. Cho Jan 2019

Probing The Effect Of Bulky Lesion-Induced Replication Fork Conformational Heterogeneity Using 4-Aminobiphenyl-Modified Dna, Ang Cai, Ke Bian, Fangyi Chen, Qi Tang, Rachel Carley, Deyu Li, Bongsup P. Cho

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Bulky organic carcinogens are activated in vivo and subsequently react with nucleobases of cellular DNA to produce adducts. Some of these DNA adducts exist in multiple conformations that are slowly interconverted to one another. Different conformations have been implicated in different mutagenic and repair outcomes. However, studies on the conformation-specific inhibition of replication, which is more relevant to cell survival, are scarce, presumably due to the structural dynamics of DNA lesions at the replication fork. It is difficult to capture the exact nature of replication inhibition by existing end-point assays, which usually detect either the ensemble of consequences of all …

Down-Regulation Of Circular Rnaitch And Circhipk3 In Gastric Cancer Tissues, Sara Ghasemi, Modjtaba Emadi-Baygi, Parvaneh Nikpour

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Gastric cancer (GC) is one of the major causes of cancer mortality worldwide. As a novel type of endogenous noncoding RNAs, circular RNAs (circRNAs) are formed by a covalent link between 5' and 3' ends. They are very stable and abundant in eukaryotes. As there were no reported studies on the expression profiles of circular RNA ITCH (cir-ITCH) and circHIPK3 in GC, in the current study, we aimed to delineate the expression profiles and clinicopathological relevance of these two circRNAs in GC tissues compared to their paired adjacent noncancerous tissues.Materials and methods: Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed …

The Biophysical Study Of The Efficacy Of Various Phospholipid Membranes On Daptomycin, Chaya Shor, Tamar Itzkowitz Jan 2019

The Biophysical Study Of The Efficacy Of Various Phospholipid Membranes On Daptomycin, Chaya Shor, Tamar Itzkowitz

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Daptomycin is an important lipopeptide antibiotic used in the treatment of systematic and life-threatening infections of the skin and underlying tissue caused by Gram-positive bacteria. Calcium and phosphatidylglycerol (PG) must be present on the target cell membrane for daptomycin’s mechanism of action to proceed. Calcium and PG also promote oligomerization, a formation that has been assumed to aid in the bactericidal process. The purpose of the experiments conducted was to understand the basic biophysical properties of membrane phospholipids as they exist in their pure and mixed monolayer forms. Furthermore, the experiments conducted attempted to discern how daptomycin penetrates the different …

Compassion As The Heart Of The Gospel, Daniel C. Peterson Jan 2019

Compassion As The Heart Of The Gospel, Daniel C. Peterson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Greek philosopher Aristotle, clearly one of the world’s great geniuses, created the concept of the “unmoved mover,” which moves “other things, but is, itself, unmoved by anything else.” This label became the standard Jewish, Christian, and Muslim description of an impersonal God — a God without body, parts or passions — a concept that has, for nearly 20 centuries, dominated western theology, philosophy, and science. The problem for thinkers in these religious traditions is that the God depicted in the Bible and the Qur’an is plainly personal. A careful review of the Bible and modern scripture reveals a “compassionate, …

Report From The Stem 2026 Workshop On Assessment, Evaluation, And Accreditation, Rebecca Bates, Angela Arnold, Cary Komoto, Peggy Brickman, R. Alan Cheville, Elizabeth Longley, Jose Mestre, Mihaela Sabin, James Warnock

Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship

A gathering of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) higher education stakeholders met in November 2018 to consider the relationship between innovation in education and assessment. When we talk about assessment in higher education, it is inextricably linked to both evaluation and accreditation, so all three were considered. The first question we asked was can we build a nation of learners? This starts with considering the student, first and foremost. As educators, this is a foundation of our exploration and makes our values transparent. As educators, how do we know we are having an impact? As members and implementers of …

Pheromone And Population Genetics Analyses Of Clavigralla Species In Africa, Hilaire Kpongbe Jan 2019

Pheromone And Population Genetics Analyses Of Clavigralla Species In Africa, Hilaire Kpongbe

All PhD Dissertations

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) and common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris (L.)) are major sources of protein for human and animal consumption. Production of these crops is hampered by insect pests, especially the complex of brown spiny bugs of the genus Clavigralla (Hemiptera: Coreidae) which causes yield loss of up to 100% in various parts of Africa. The current practice of pesticide application to control these species is not efficient and has negative impacts on human health and the environment. These species are widely distributed in Africa and has a wide range of host plants, suggesting variability in genetics and chemical …

Development Of Pancreatic Cancer Organoid Model For Studying Immune Response In Pancreatic Cancer, Jin Woo Yoo Jan 2019

Development Of Pancreatic Cancer Organoid Model For Studying Immune Response In Pancreatic Cancer, Jin Woo Yoo

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The importance of immune system in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) pathogenesis and therapy remains poorly understood largely due to the lack of effective model systems. Cell lines are not physiologic as they cannot recapitulate the cancer stroma and lose genetic heterogeneity over time. Genetically engineered mouse models of PDAC are more physiologic than cell lines but lack neoantigens needed to mount T cell responses against tumor. Organoid models of PDAC offer unique opportunity to study immune mechanisms in PDAC since organoids can model complex layering of multiple cell types, creating a physiologically relevant system that is highly tractable for genetic …

The Medial Prefrontal Cortex To Dorsal Raphe Circuit In The Antidepressant Action Of Ketamine, Alexandra Thomas Jan 2019

The Medial Prefrontal Cortex To Dorsal Raphe Circuit In The Antidepressant Action Of Ketamine, Alexandra Thomas

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Major depressive disorder is a common and debilitating illness for which there is a notable lack of efficient, effective treatment. While currently available pharmacotherapies typically take eight weeks to take effect and fail to do so at all for about a third of patients, the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist ketamine has shown a much more favorable effectiveness profile, including improvements in symptoms within hours of administration, even for many patients who do not respond to typical antidepressants. Ketamine, as a modulator of glutamate signaling in the brain, has a distinct mechanism of action from the serotonin and norepinephrine modulators that …

Impact Of Fdaaa On Registration, Results Reporting, And Publication Of Clinical Trials Evaluating New Neuropsychiatric Drugs Approved Between 2005 And 2014, Constance Xuanyi Zou Jan 2019

Impact Of Fdaaa On Registration, Results Reporting, And Publication Of Clinical Trials Evaluating New Neuropsychiatric Drugs Approved Between 2005 And 2014, Constance Xuanyi Zou

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) promotes the use of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in peer reviewed medical journals as the “gold standard”. However, up to 50% of the completed clinical trials are never published and trials with results in favor of studied interventions are 2-4 times more likely to have been published then those with non favorable results. Publication bias seems to be a particularly severe problem for RCTs evaluating newly approved brand-name neuropsychiatric drugs. Mandatory trial registration, and later results reporting, were proposed to mitigate selective clinical trial publication and outcome reporting. Congress enacted the FDA Amendments Act (FDAAA) on …

Influence Of Medicare Formulary Restrictions On Evidence-Based Prescribing Practices, Aishwarya Vijay Jan 2019

Influence Of Medicare Formulary Restrictions On Evidence-Based Prescribing Practices, Aishwarya Vijay

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Controlling the cost of prescription drugs is integral to improving health outcomes, and patient access and adherence to treatment. While prescription drugs can often provide essential therapeutic benefit, previous studies have suggested that inappropriate prescription drug use is a principal cause of adverse drug events as well as abuse and diversion of drugs. Thus, balancing the benefits and harms to promote appropriate prescription drug use is an essential component of healthcare delivery in the United States. There are multiple ways appropriate prescription drug use is promoted. Black-box warnings and drug labeling controlled by the FDA as well as guidelines released …

The Genetics Of Vein Of Galen Malformation And Assessment Of Candidate Genes In Xenopus Tropicalis, Jonathan Read Gaillard Jan 2019

The Genetics Of Vein Of Galen Malformation And Assessment Of Candidate Genes In Xenopus Tropicalis, Jonathan Read Gaillard

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The Vein of Galen Malformation (VOGM) is a specific subtype of arteriovenous malformation (AVM) that becomes evident in weeks 6-11 of embryonic development. VOGM comprise less than 1% of all vascular malformations, yet represent 30% of all pediatric intracranial vascular malformations. Depending on their specific characteristics, i.e. its feeding vessels, it can present clinically as devastating congestive heart failure in neonates, hydrocephalus in children, or seizures and headaches in young adults. Advances in treatment provide improved survival, primarily through endovascular surgery. The genetic and molecular etiology of VOGM remains relatively unknown, with the only associated genes being in the context …

Outcomes Of Human Papillomavirus-Associated Head And Neck Cancers, Hong Li Jan 2019

Outcomes Of Human Papillomavirus-Associated Head And Neck Cancers, Hong Li

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Head and neck cancers are the 6th most common solid cancer in the world. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are now accepted to be a previously unrecognized causative agent for head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs). However, research surrounding HPV’s effect at non-oropharynx sub-site is limited. There is also mixed literature over the prognostic effect of patient sex and age on overall survival in HNSCCs. We sought to utilize the National Cancer Database from 2004-2013 to evaluate the outcomes of the aforementioned objectives. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were conducted with chi-square tests, Kaplan-Meier estimates, log-rank tests, and Cox proportional …
