Space Use And Nesting Ecology Of Common Ravens (Corvus Corax) In Central Washington State, Brandon A. Rossi Jan 2019

Space Use And Nesting Ecology Of Common Ravens (Corvus Corax) In Central Washington State, Brandon A. Rossi

All Graduate Projects

The ecology and space use of Common ravens (Corvus corax; hereafter ravens) is not well understood in the shrub-steppe of central Washington State. Raven populations have increased by more than 254% since 1990 in Washington State (North American Breeding Bird Survey; www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/). Ravens in central Washington are implicated as top predators of a small endemic population of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus). Researchers have related increased raven populations to anthropogenic subsidies such as landfills, agriculture, and livestock operations. Analyzing movement can help researchers understand the characteristics of habitat that are important and potentially drive population fluctuations. …

The Phytoremediative Effects Of Cilantro (Coriandrum Sativum) In Lead Contaminated Soil, Sierra D. Garrett, Timothy D. Trott Jan 2019

The Phytoremediative Effects Of Cilantro (Coriandrum Sativum) In Lead Contaminated Soil, Sierra D. Garrett, Timothy D. Trott

Research in Biology

Environmental exposure to heavy metals such as lead pose a significant health threat. The goal of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of Coriandrum sativum (Cilantro) as a potential lead (II), Pb2+, phytoremediator. C. sativumplants were allowed to grow for 43 days while exposed to with different amounts of lead nitrate, Pb(NO3)2. Lead exposure was accomplished by regular watering with a concentration series of lead nitrate solutions. The roots and shoots of these plants were separated and dried. Ground plant material was liquefied by nitric acid digestion. The amount of lead absorbed …

Untethered Lecture Capture: A Qualitative Investigation Of College Student Experiences, Lorretta Krautscheid, Samuel Williams, Benjamin Kahn, Katherine Adams Jan 2019

Untethered Lecture Capture: A Qualitative Investigation Of College Student Experiences, Lorretta Krautscheid, Samuel Williams, Benjamin Kahn, Katherine Adams

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

Untethered Lecture Capture (ULC), a technology-enhanced teaching strategy, permits faculty to be freely mobile in the classroom (untethered) while simultaneously teaching and creating audiovisual media assets (lecture capture). Faculty, representing nine disciplines, implemented ULC in undergraduate courses. Qualitative content analysis resulted in three themes. Undergraduate participants (n¼23) reported ULC supports accessibility and education affordances, enhancing personalized, self-paced learning, and equal opportunities for academic success. Untethered faculty teach on our turf, teaching among rather than talking at students, enhancing time-on-task, in-class focus, and learner socialization. Understanding and retention were perceived as improved when multimedia instruction principles were integrated in the classroom.

Understanding And Improving Patient Satisfaction In Orthopaedic Surgical Procedures: A Review, Paul J. Johnson Jan 2019

Understanding And Improving Patient Satisfaction In Orthopaedic Surgical Procedures: A Review, Paul J. Johnson

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Orthopaedic surgeons and their hospitals are being evaluated and reimbursed according to their ability to provide patient satisfaction. It behooves physicians to learn how patient satisfaction is evaluated, how patient satisfaction may be improved, and how improvements in patient satisfaction may positively influence patient outcomes both subjectively and objectively. The purpose of this review is to illuminate how evaluation works, how patient factors may affect or correlate with increased satisfaction, and how physicians can improve actions to enhance patient satisfaction. Notably, studies have found that improved care coordination, nursing follow-up, provider listening skills, providing realistic yet positive expectations, and sitting …

Design For Transtibial Modifiable Socket For Immediate Postoperative Prosthesis, Matthew N. Rush, Evan Hagin, Jane Nguyen, Victoria Lujan, Rebecca A. Dutton, Christina Salas

UNM Orthopaedic Research Journal

Amputations are long-standing surgical procedures that have been performed for centuries; however, very little attention and urgency have been given to immediate restoration of movement and return to a normal lifestyle. In many cases, the time between amputation and prosthetic fitting can pause recovery and development of new routines. To increase recovery, immediate postoperative prostheses (IPOPs) have been developed yet these are under-utilized because of concerns for wound healing and complications with vascular diseases. Subsequently, we designed a transtibial IPOP that utilizes an ergonomic modifiable socket that allows for examination, wound care, and in situ edema control. Additionally, the IPOP …

Irrigation Water Quality—A Contemporary Perspective, Arindam Malakar, Daniel D. Snow, Chittaranjan Ray Jan 2019

Irrigation Water Quality—A Contemporary Perspective, Arindam Malakar, Daniel D. Snow, Chittaranjan Ray

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

In the race to enhance agricultural productivity, irrigation will become more dependent on poorly characterized and virtually unmonitored sources of water. Increased use of irrigation water has led to impaired water and soil quality in many areas. Historically, soil salinization and reduced crop productivity have been the primary focus of irrigation water quality. Recently, there is increasing evidence for the occurrence of geogenic contaminants in water. The appearance of trace elements and an increase in the use of wastewater has highlighted the vulnerability and complexities of the composition of irrigation water and its role in ensuring proper crop growth, and …

Conifer Responses To A Stylet-Feeding Invasive Herbivore And Induction With Methyl Jasmonate: Impact On The Expression Of Induced Defenses And A Native Folivore, Chad M. Rigsby, Emma E. Shoemaker, Mary M. Mallinger, Colin M. Orians, Evan L. Preisser

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

  1. Trees attacked by multiple herbivores need to defend themselves against dynamic biotic challenges; appropriate responses to one stressor can elicit hormonal responses that are antagonistic to another. Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) infestation by hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA; Adelges tsugae) results in the accumulation of the defensive hormone salicylic acid.
  2. We explored the potential for HWA infestation to interfere with anti‐folivore‐induced defence signalling and its implications for a native folivore (hemlock looper; Lambdina fiscellaria). Hemlocks were infested with HWA and/or sprayed with methyl jasmonate; foliar defences were analyzed and foliage quality for looper larvae was assessed.
  3. Both treatments …

Computational Analysis Of The Structural Importance Of The Conserved Glycine Residues At Positions 31, 33, And 35 In The Chromophore Formation And Folding Of Green Fluorescent Protein, Franceine Welcome Jan 2019

Computational Analysis Of The Structural Importance Of The Conserved Glycine Residues At Positions 31, 33, And 35 In The Chromophore Formation And Folding Of Green Fluorescent Protein, Franceine Welcome

Chemistry Honors Papers

Green fluorescent protein, initially cloned and expressed from the bioluminescent jellyfish, Aequorea victoria (avGFP), has a wide range of uses in cellular biology, one of which includes uses as a biological marker1. Variants of GFP exist, but some residues are highly conserved and necessary for appropriate chromophore formation. Some of these conserved residues are the glycine residues at positions 31, 33 and 35, though it they are not part of the tripeptide that forms the chromophore2 .

The objective of this honors study and 3 related independent studies was to use computational methods to find out why the glycines at …
