Little Farm Hands: Rural Child Labor, Family, And Memory In The U.S. Southwest, 1890-1940, Jairo E. Marshall
Little Farm Hands: Rural Child Labor, Family, And Memory In The U.S. Southwest, 1890-1940, Jairo E. Marshall
History ETDs
Child labor was a traditional subsistence and agricultural practice throughout the rural Southwest. Between 1890 and 1940 a series of changes occurred within agriculture, ranching, and rural land/labor patterns in New Mexico and Texas. However, child labor remained a useful economic strategy for families well into this period, because it remained grounded in environmental challenges, cultural practices, agrarian ideologies, and children’s social and physical development. Agribusinesses took advantage of this labor pool, while schools and communities continued to allow children to labor, believing it to be either necessary or beneficial.
Families and children continued to have agency to determine the …
Predicting The Daily Return Direction Of The Stock Market Using Hybrid Machine Learning Algorithms, X. Zhong, David Lee Enke
Predicting The Daily Return Direction Of The Stock Market Using Hybrid Machine Learning Algorithms, X. Zhong, David Lee Enke
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Big data analytic techniques associated with machine learning algorithms are playing an increasingly important role in various application fields, including stock market investment. However, few studies have focused on forecasting daily stock market returns, especially when using powerful machine learning techniques, such as deep neural networks (DNNs), to perform the analyses. DNNs employ various deep learning algorithms based on the combination of network structure, activation function, and model parameters, with their performance depending on the format of the data representation. This paper presents a comprehensive big data analytics process to predict the daily return direction of the SPDR S&P 500 …

MSTO1 encodes a cytosolic mitochondrial fusion protein, misato homolog 1 or MSTO1. While the full genotype-phenotype spectrum remains to be explored, pathogenic variants in MSTO1 have recently been reported in a small number of patients presenting with a phenotype of cerebellar ataxia, congenital muscle involvement with histologic findings ranging from myopathic to dystrophic and pigmentary retinopathy. The proposed underlying pathogenic mechanism of MSTO1-related disease is suggestive of impaired mitochondrial fusion secondary to a loss of function of MSTO1. Disorders of mitochondrial fusion and fission have been shown to also lead to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depletion, linking them to the mtDNA …

Background
Comparative data from non-human primates provide insight into the processes that shaped the evolution of the human gut microbiome and highlight microbiome traits that differentiate humans from other primates. Here, in an effort to improve our understanding of the human microbiome, we compare gut microbiome composition and functional potential in 14 populations of humans from ten nations and 18 species of wild, non-human primates.
Results
Contrary to expectations from host phylogenetics, we find that human gut microbiome composition and functional potential are more similar to those of cercopithecines, a subfamily of Old World monkey, particularly baboons, than to those …
The Water Table, Soil Moisture And Evapotranspiration Conditions Following The Removal Of Conifers From Two Encroached Meadows, Tyler J. Davis
The Water Table, Soil Moisture And Evapotranspiration Conditions Following The Removal Of Conifers From Two Encroached Meadows, Tyler J. Davis
Master's Theses
Montane meadows provide essential habitat for a variety of unique species and important ecosystem services in the western United States. Although important, meadows have experienced increased rates of conifer encroachment due to climate change, fire suppression and grazing. To combat meadow degradation from conifer encroachment, land managers have employed various restoration strategies one of which is conifer removal. Multiple studies have investigated the relationship between meadow hydrology and vegetation; however, few have assessed the effect of conifer removal on meadow groundwater. The goal of this study is to determine if the removal of conifers from an encroached meadow has an …

Evaluation Of Pheromone Mating Disruption For California Red Scale Control In Commercial California Citrus, Joel Timothy Leonard
Master's Theses
California red scale (CRS), Aonidella aurantii, is an increasingly injurious insect pest for the California citrus industry due to insecticide resistance, changing weather patterns, and shifting trade regulations. The presence of the insect on fruit, damages the rind of the fruit and high populations can cause dieback of branches as well as lower yields. Pheromone mating disruption of CRS has the potential to alleviate population control concerns and reduce insecticide use. The efficacy of the pheromone mating disruption technique for pest management of CRS was determined using the products CheckMate® CRS and Semios CRS Plus. CheckMate® CRS was evaluated …

Bridging Families And Schools To Prevent Youth From Running Away From Home, Monica Bixby Radu
Bridging Families And Schools To Prevent Youth From Running Away From Home, Monica Bixby Radu
Journal of Youth Development
Running away from home is a serious problem among American youth. It has been linked to numerous negative social, psychological, and behavioral outcomes. It is well established that family dysfunction is one reason that youth run away from home. However, less research focuses on how both families and schools influence youths’ likelihood of running away from home. Drawing from a sample of 4,546 youth from the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, I examine how youths’ perceptions of their schools’ safety, experiences with bully victimization, and bonds with their families and their schools predict the likelihood of running away from …

Dna Mixture Statistics Using A Likelihood Ratio Software Tool: Effect Of Variations In Drop-Out Rates And Number Of Contributors, Felicia M. Lucero
Student Theses
Complex DNA mixtures can be very probative evidence, but comparisons to a person of interest can be affected by allelic drop-out and uncertainty regarding the number of individuals having contributed DNA to a sample. Scientific organizations such as the International Society of Forensic Genetics (Gill et al., 2006) recommend that likelihood ratios should be used to provide a statistical weight when a positive association is made between the DNA profile of a person of interest and an evidentiary DNA sample. To this effect the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) developed a software program, Forensic Statistical Tool …
Relationship Between Childhood Relationships And Antisocial And Lifestyle Characteristics Of Psychopathic Traits, Esther Kim
Student Theses
Psychopathy is a heterogeneous personality construct that has long been associated with antisocial behaviors and outcomes (Hare, 2003; Walsh & Kosson, 2006). However, some literature suggests that socially deviant behaviors and outcomes may not necessarily be a fundamental component of psychopathy (Cooke & Michie, 2001; DeMatteo, Heilbrun, & Marczyk, 2001; Lilienfeld & Widows, 2005). Research on externalizing behaviors and psychopathy has broadened from examining the quality of early relationships as a risk factor (Salekin & Lochman, 2008), to also examining early relationships as a potential protective factor against the development of psychopathic characteristics and antisocial outcomes (i.e. Backman, Laajasalo, Jokela, …

Outside The Gender Binary: A Workshop On Gender Identity And Being An Ally, Jelea Kai Glover
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The gender binary, or the idea of gender only having two expressions that are associated with people’s biological sex, is the norm of expression in the United States (Dragowski, 2014). It is not realistic to how people express themselves on a regular basis; it ignores the diversity of gender identities such as transgender, intersex, and genderqueer individuals. My capstone project focuses on college students because this is a time where they ponder their values and identities without the heavy judgment of parents’ or guardians’ expectations. My capstone project was a one-day workshop teaching different gender identity terms, differentiating the terms …

Changes In Avian Diversity And Potential Invasive Seed Dispersal Post-Wildfire In A Southeastern Deciduous Forest; Flipper Bend Woods, Signal Mountain, Tennessee, Mary Elizabeth Feely
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
In eastern deciduous forests, fire-disturbance and its ecological implications have not been heavily studied. In Tennessee, a recently burned site (2016) presented a unique opportunity to analyze habitat regrowth two-three years after a major wildfire thought to have been worsened by invasive plants. In order to examine post-fire recovery and invasive plant recolonization, researchers observed the diversity of avian species in a burned and unburned site. Using mist-nets, line-transects, and vegetation analysis, this study found that though the unburned site was higher in avian diversity, the burned site appeared to be suitable habitat for multiple disturbance-dependent avian species. There was …

Applying Formal Methods For Integrating Advanced Algorithms In Safety Critical Systems, Milton Stafford
Applying Formal Methods For Integrating Advanced Algorithms In Safety Critical Systems, Milton Stafford
Theses and Dissertations
In software engineering it is essential that updates are deployed for continual improvement. While software updates bring new functionality, updates also may introduce instability. This leads to failures of various kinds. This is especially problematic in safety-critical systems where there is a potential for injury or loss of life. However, newer and more sophisticated software carries potential advantages, including higher performance and reliability. Therefore, there are benefits in adopting newer software if the integration process is assured. In this thesis, I present a framework for assured integration; one that links requirements, design, and implementation. The proposed framework includes a new …

Gut Content Analysis Of Benthic Foraging Fish Compared To Invertebrate Infauna Distributions In Dredged Vs. Undredged Habitats, Danielle Louise Juzwick
Theses and Dissertations
The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) has experienced a loss in seagrasses due to organic sediment accumulation and harmful algal blooms. Seagrasses are an essential nursery habitat for many fishes and benthic invertebrates. IRL fish known to utilize benthic habitat and feed on invertebrates include Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulates), juvenile Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), and Mojarra (Eucinostomus spp.). The most abundant major infaunal taxa of the IRL are crustaceans, polychaetes, and mollusks. Environmental dredging in the IRL’s Turkey Creek is intended to improve water quality, remove harmful sediments and restore benthic habitat. Such dredging may impact benthic invertebrate populations and, indirectly, …

Synthesis And Study Of Hydroxytyrosol Derivatives, Ebenezer Ametsetor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hydroxytyrosol is one of the most powerful known antioxidants. It is a naturally occurring polyphenol, most commonly produced in olive trees, (Olea europaea). The remarkable antioxidant and pharmacological properties of hydroxytyrosol has made it an outstanding compound in the polyphenol family and of great interest to many researchers. Hydroxytyrosol can scavenge free radicals produced during cellular oxidative stress and helps to protect the integrity of cells in living systems. Despite its numerous biological and pharmacological uses, it is found in very low concentration in olive oil, this limits its availability for biomedical applications. This work reports a novel and effective …
