‘We Don’T Really Give A Fiddlers About Anything": The Ambiguity, Contradiction And Fluidity Of Irish Masculinities., Clay J. Darcy

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Irish men have received little critical attention as gendered subjects. Historically, masculinities were invisible in Irish society. Thus, this article contributes to the visibility of Irish masculinities and the critical study of men, by sociologically examining Irish men’s conceptualisation of masculinity and their understanding of what it means to be a man in contemporary Irish society. Using masculinities as the primary theoretical and analytical lens, this article draws from 9 focus groups conducted with 44 Irish men, which explored their views about masculinities and about being a man in contemporary Ireland. The men in this study presented a complex conceptualisation …

Metal-Assisted Hydrolysis Reactions Involving Lipids: A Review, Dominique E. Williams, Kathryn B. Grant

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This report covers major advances in the use of metal ions and complexes to hydrolyze ester and phosphate ester lipid bonds. These metal-based Lewis acids have been investigated as catalysts to isolate fatty acids from biological sources, as probes to study phospholipid bilayer properties, as tools to examine signal transduction pathways, and as lead compounds toward the discovery of therapeutic agents. Metal ions that accelerate phosphate ester hydrolysis under mild conditions of temperature and pH may have the potential to mimic phospholipase activity in biochemical applications.

Unusual Case Of Obstructive Jaundice., Rajesh Essrani Md, Eric Nellis Md, Patrick Hickey Do, Hiral N. Shah Md

Department of Medicine

Most malignant obstructive jaundice arises from primary periampullary tumors and rarely from metastatic cancer of the head and neck. A 60-year-old male was diagnosed with obstructive jaundice due to metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil. Only 12 cases of small bowel metastasis from the head and neck have been reported. Most of them originate from laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, and only one case reported tonsillar cancer metastasizing to the ileum. Our case is the first one, to the best of our knowledge, to illustrate tonsillar cancer with metastasis to the duodenum causing obstructive jaundice.

Allosteric Mechanism Of The Circadian Protein Vivid Resolved Through Markov State Model And Machine Learning Analysis, Hongyu Zhou, Zheng Dong, Gennady M. Verkhivker, Brian D. Zoltowski, Peng Tao

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The fungal circadian clock photoreceptor Vivid (VVD) contains a photosensitive allosteric light, oxygen, voltage (LOV) domain that undergoes a large N-terminal conformational change. The mechanism by which a blue-light driven covalent bond formation leads to a global conformational change remains unclear, which hinders the further development of VVD as an optogenetic tool. We answered this question through a novel computational platform integrating Markov state models, machine learning methods, and newly developed community analysis algorithms. Applying this new integrative approach, we provided a quantitative evaluation of the contribution from the covalent bond to the protein global conformational change, and proposed an …

On The Ethical Significance Of Ecological Restoration: Domination Or Collaboration?, Roger J.H. King Feb 2019

On The Ethical Significance Of Ecological Restoration: Domination Or Collaboration?, Roger J.H. King

Between the Species

Ecological restoration is essential both to a sustainable human culture and to the well being of the more-than-human world. Yet some philosophers criticize enthusiasm for restoration as yet another manifestation of human domination and anthropocentric arrogance. The paper critiques this view as persistently presented by Eric Katz, and offers an alternative view of restoration’s ethical significance. Rather than seeing restoration as a unilateral human imposition on nature, restoration deserves defense as an expression of an interspecies etiquette, attentive to collaboration with the more-than-human world. But the full ethical significance of ecological restoration will not be realized without deep change in …

Examining Interactions Between And Among Predictors Of Net Ecosystem Exchange: A Machine Learning Approach In A Semi-Arid Landscape, Qingtao Zhou, Aaron Fellows, Gerald N. Flerchinger, Alejandro N. Flores

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Net ecosystem exchange (NEE) is an essential climate indicator of the direction and magnitude of carbon dioxide (CO2) transfer between land surfaces and the atmosphere. Improved estimates of NEE can serve to better constrain spatiotemporal characteristics of terrestrial carbon fluxes, improve verification of land models, and advance monitoring of Earth’s terrestrial ecosystems. Spatiotemporal NEE information developed by combining ground-based flux tower observations and spatiotemporal remote sensing datasets are of potential value in benchmarking land models. We apply a machine learning approach (Random Forest (RF)) to develop spatiotemporally varying NEE estimates using observations from a flux tower and several …

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Background: Recently, we showed that PARP1 is involved in cotranscriptional splicing, possibly by bridging chromatin to RNA and recruiting splicing factors. It also can influence alternative splicing decisions through the regulation of RNAPII elongation. In this study, we investigated the effect of PARP1-mediated chromatin changes on RNAPII movement, during transcription and alternative splicing.

Results: We show that RNAPII pauses at PARP1–chromatin structures within the gene body. Knockdown of PARP1 abolishes this RNAPII pausing, suggesting that PARP1 may regulate RNAPII elongation. Additionally, PARP1 alters nucleosome deposition and histone post-translational modifications at specific exon–intron boundaries, thereby affecting RNAPII movement. Lastly, genome-wide analyses …

Ground-based observations of land–atmosphere fluxes are necessary to progressively improve global climate models. Observed data can be used for model evaluation and to develop or tune process models. In arctic permafrost regions, climate–carbon feedbacks are amplified. Therefore, increased efforts to better represent these regions in global climate models have been made in recent years. We present a multi-annual time series of land–atmosphere carbon dioxide fluxes measured in situ with the eddy covariance technique in the Siberian Arctic (72◦220 N, 126◦300 E). The site is part of the international network of eddy covariance flux observation stations (FLUXNET; site ID: Ru-Sam). The …

American Sign Language Recognition Using Machine Learning And Computer Vision, Kshitij Bantupalli, Ying Xie

Master of Science in Computer Science Theses

Speech impairment is a disability which affects an individual’s ability to communicate using speech and hearing. People who are affected by this use other media of communication such as sign language. Although sign language is ubiquitous in recent times, there remains a challenge for non-sign language speakers to communicate with sign language speakers or signers. With recent advances in deep learning and computer vision there has been promising progress in the fields of motion and gesture recognition using deep learning and computer vision-based techniques. The focus of this work is to create a vision-based application which offers sign language translation …

Influence Of Stimulus Intensity On Multimodal Integration In The Startle Escape System Of Goldfish, Camille Mcintyre, Thomas Preuss

Publications and Research

Processing of multimodal information is essential for an organism to respond to environmental events. However, how multimodal integration in neurons translates into behavior is far from clear. Here, we investigate integration of biologically relevant visual and auditory information in the goldfish startle escape system in which paired Mauthner-cells (M-cells) initiate the behavior. Sound pips and visual looms as well as multimodal combinations of these stimuli were tested for their effectiveness of evoking the startle response. Results showed that adding a low intensity sound early during a visual loom (low visual effectiveness) produced a supralinear increase in startle responsiveness as compared …

Phylogenetic And Biogeographic Controls Of Plant Nighttime Stomatal Conductance, Kailiang Yu, Gregory R. Goldsmith, Yujie Wang, William R. L. Anderegg

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The widely documented phenomenon of nighttime stomatal conductance (gsn) could lead to substantial water loss with no carbon gain, and thus it remains unclear whether nighttime stomatal conductance confers a functional advantage. Given that studies of gsn have focused on controlled environments or small numbers of species in natural environments, a broad phylogenetic and biogeographic context could provide insights into potential adaptive benefits of gsn.

We measured gsn on a diverse suite of species (n = 73) across various functional groups and climates‐of‐origin in a common garden to study the phylogenetic and biogeographic/climatic controls …
