Data are limited on whether to adjust high-dose chemotherapy before autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (autoHCT) in obese patients. This study explores the effects of dose adjustment on the outcomes of obese patients, defined as body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2. Dose adjustment was defined as a reduction in standard dosing ≥20%, based on ideal, reported dosing and actual weights. We included 2 groups of US patients who had received autoHCT between 2008 and 2014. Specifically, we included patients with multiple myeloma (MM, n = 1696) treated with high-dose melphalan and patients with Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphomas (n = 781) …

Cybersecurity And The Protection Of Digital Assets: Assessing The Role Of International Investment Law And Arbitration, Julien Chaisse, Cristen Bauer Mar 2019

Cybersecurity And The Protection Of Digital Assets: Assessing The Role Of International Investment Law And Arbitration, Julien Chaisse, Cristen Bauer

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The digital era provides many opportunities, yet it also presents several unique challenges with regard to cybersecurity and the protection of digital assets. Cybercrime has changed the international legal landscape as nations, businesses, and legislators grapple with how to deal with this rapidly evolving, multifaceted problem. As there is no international mechanism for protection of foreign investors in this regard, some scholars are advocating for the use of Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) as part of a 'olycentric" approach to cyber peace. With an uptick in digital development and more development on the horizon, it will be important to establish what …

Computational Experimentation, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim Mar 2019

Computational Experimentation, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Experimentation conjures images of laboratories and equipment in biotechnology, chemistry, materials science, and pharmaceuticals. Yet modern day experimentation is not limited to only chemical synthesis, but is increasingly computational. Researchers in the unpredictable arts can experiment upon the functions, properties, reactions, and structures of chemical compounds with highly accurate computational techniques. These computational capabilities challenge the enablement and utility patentability requirements. The patent statute requires that the inventor explain how to make and use the invention without undue experimentation and that the invention have at least substantial and specific utility. These patentability requirements do not align with computational research capabilities, …

Seasonal Origins Of Soil Water Used By Trees, Scott T. Allen, James W. Kirchner, Sabine Braun, Rolf T. W. Siegwolf, Gregory R. Goldsmith Mar 2019

Seasonal Origins Of Soil Water Used By Trees, Scott T. Allen, James W. Kirchner, Sabine Braun, Rolf T. W. Siegwolf, Gregory R. Goldsmith

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Rain recharges soil water storages and either percolates downward into aquifers and streams or is returned to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration. Although it is commonly assumed that summer rainfall recharges plant-available water during the growing season, the seasonal origins of water used by plants have not been systematically explored. We characterize the seasonal origins of waters in soils and trees by comparing their midsummer isotopic signatures (δ2H) to seasonal isotopic cycles in precipitation, using a new seasonal origin index. Across 182 Swiss forest sites, xylem water isotopic signatures show that summer rain was not the predominant water source …

Bing: Binarized Normed Gradients For Objectness Estimation At 300fps, Ming-Ming Cheng, Yun Liu, Wen-Yan Lin, Ziming Zhang, Paul L. Rosin, Philip H. S. Torr

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Training a generic objectness measure to produce object proposals has recently become of significant interest. We observe that generic objects with well-defined closed boundaries can be detected by looking at the norm of gradients, with a suitable resizing of their corresponding image windows to a small fixed size. Based on this observation and computational reasons, we propose to resize the window to 8 × 8 and use the norm of the gradients as a simple 64D feature to describe it, for explicitly training a generic objectness measure. We further show how the binarized version of this feature, namely binarized normed …

The number of roots was identified, and root canal configurations were classified according to Vertucci's classification and a new system for classifying root and canal morphology. In addition, the position where roots bifurcated and the levels where canals merged or diverged were identified. Fisher's exact test and independent …

Building Wooden Houses: The Political Economy Of Plankhouse Construction On The Southern Northwest Coast Of North America, Kenneth M. Ames, Emily E. Shepard Mar 2019

Building Wooden Houses: The Political Economy Of Plankhouse Construction On The Southern Northwest Coast Of North America, Kenneth M. Ames, Emily E. Shepard

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Household archaeology focuses on what households do. Building and repairing houses is a household task that receives less explicit attention than do other tasks. Through the lens of political economy, we examine how three southern Northwest Coast households organized and orchestrated a complex labor task: building and maintaining their houses, by developing estimates of labor and raw material costs. We then use this analysis to show how house building and maintenance bears on issues of collective action, monumentality, anthropogenic landscapes, the development of concepts of property on the Northwest Coast, and of household continuity across episodes of cultural change. The …

Arabinose Substitution Effect On Xylan Rigidity And Self-Aggregation, Utsab Shrestha, Sydney Smith, Sai Venkatesh Pingali, Hui Yang, Mai Zahran, Llyod Breunig, Liza Wilson, Daniel Cosgrove, Hugh O'Neill, Loukas Petridis

Publications and Research

Substituted xylans play an important role in the structure and mechanics of the primary cell wall of plants. Arabinoxylans (AX) consist of a xylose backbone substituted with arabinose, while glucuronoarabinoxylans (GAX) also contain glucuronic acid substitutions and ferulic acid esters on some of the arabinoses. We provide a molecular-level description on the dependence of xylan conformational, selfaggregation properties and binding to cellulose on the degree of arabinose substitution. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal fully solubilized xylans with a low degree of arabinose substitution (lsAX) to be stiffer than their highly substituted (hsAX) counterparts. Small-angle neutron scattering experiments indicate that both wild-type …

The Decision To Move: Response Times, Neuronal Circuits And Sensory Memory In A Simple Vertebrate, A Roberts, R Borisyuk, E Buhl, A Ferrario, Et Al

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

All animals use sensory systems to monitor external events and have to decide whether to move. Response times are long and variable compared to reflexes, and fast escape movements. The complexity of adult vertebrate brains makes it difficult to trace the neuronal circuits underlying basic decisions to move. To simplify the problem, we investigate the nervous system and responses of hatchling frog tadpoles which swim when their skin is stimulated. Studying the neuron-by-neuron pathway from sensory to hindbrain neurons, where the decision to swim is made, has revealed two simple pathways generating excitation which sums to threshold in these neurons …

Going To School In The Forest: Changing Evaluations Of Animal-Plant Interactions In The Kichwa Amazon, Jeffrey T. Shenton Feb 2019

Going To School In The Forest: Changing Evaluations Of Animal-Plant Interactions In The Kichwa Amazon, Jeffrey T. Shenton

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

For rural, indigenous communities the ways structural modernization, exposure to Western-scientific epistemologies, and formal schooling affect environmental reasoning remain unclear. For one Kichwa community in the Napo region of Ecuador, daily routines have re-oriented toward formal schooling but environmental learning opportunities remain intact. Here, while a Species Interaction Task elicited consensus across ages on inferred ecological interactions, younger people reasoned differently than older people: for them, animal interactions with flora were considered damaging, not neutral. Aspirational practices like schooling can thus reorient environmental reasoning, even in contexts in which young people share cultural understandings of local ecological relationships with adults.

Flow And Water Quality Assessment Of The Jordan Creek Underground, Springfield, Missouri, Marc R. Owen, Sarah Letarte, Robert T. Pavlowsky

OEWRI Technical Reports

The City of Springfield has contracted the Ozarks Environmental and Water Resources Institute at Missouri State University to measure stream flow and sample water quality parameters in the Jordan Creek Underground to determine potential inputs from leaking sewer lines and other shallow groundwater sources. Exfiltration losses from leaking sanitary sewer systems can cause pollution problems in receiving streams and water quality surveys have been used to locate wastewater exfiltration from sanitary sewers into local streams (Dove et al., 2013, Owen et al. 2017, Owen et al. 2018). Jordan Creek is located in central Springfield, Missouri and flows through an underground …
