Male Marmosets Display Increased Sociosexual Behavior Toward Their Mate After Separation, Mariah Wulf
Male Marmosets Display Increased Sociosexual Behavior Toward Their Mate After Separation, Mariah Wulf
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The quality of bonds between mates is variable and can be operationally defined using affiliative measures (e.g., sexual solicitations, amount of time spent near another individual). The development of an attachment between mates is regulated by biological and neurobiological factors. Specifically, the neuropeptide oxytocin (OT) is associated with increases in social bonding and positive social interactions. We investigated how chronic treatment with OT, an OT antagonist (OTA), or a control during the initial 3 weeks of pairing in marmoset monkeys altered patterns of social interactions. We assessed how marmosets behaved in a testing paradigm in which they could see, but …

Developing Stem Interest And Genre Knowledge Through Science Fiction Prototyping, Justin Nicholes
Developing Stem Interest And Genre Knowledge Through Science Fiction Prototyping, Justin Nicholes
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Upward Bound Math and Science, a federally funded initiative, aims to persuade U.S. high schoolers to become college STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) majors. The program attempts this persuasion by developing students’ content and procedural knowledge so that students may succeed in high school and college STEM courses. Primary focus on knowledge acquisition, however, may cause missed opportunities to engage the imaginative dimensions of students’ science identities and students’ senses of wonder for science. In this reflective essay, I describe a science fiction prototyping assignment that meets the knowledge-based objectives of the Writing Skills course in a five-week Upward Bound …

Spot-On! Exploring Comprehension Of Ecological Concepts With Abstract Art Analogies, Jane Huggins
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Students enrolled in an online general studies course [GNM 2190: Extinct and Threatened Life] at Stockton University were presented with two different pieces of abstract art. They were asked to draw analogies from each piece of art to the ecological concepts studied in the course. Students provided written responses which were submitted as assignments in the learning management software, Blackboard [Bb]. This exercise was described as ‘open-ended’ by the instructor; no grading rubrics were used. Responses to each piece of art were collected from 47 students and were subsequently uploaded into Quirkosä software for qualitative analysis. Codes representing major concepts …

Musicals In The Steam Curriculum: Framing Instruction With Show Tunes And Themes, Keith Mason
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
Musicals, a part of the arts, have potential in the STEAM curriculum. A long history of stage, film and television musicals are present within popular culture. Musicals can foster STEAM especially in terms of the technical aspects of theatre, cinema and television production. STEAM educators can utilize show tunes and themes to frame lessons as outlined in a number of examples. A description of a high school curriculum integration program provides examples of how school musicals can foster STEAM areas. These musicals illustrate how STEAM instructors can capitalize on musicals with their students.

We sought to determine whether black-white gap in mortality exists among hospitalized HIV-positive patients in the United States (US). We hypothesized that in-hospital mortality (IHM) would be similar between black and white HIV-positive patients due to the nationwide availability of HIV services. Our analysis was restricted to hospitalized HIV-positive patients (15-49 years). We used the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) that covered the period from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2014. We employed joinpoint regression to construct temporal trends in IHM overall and within subgroups over the study period. We applied multivariable survey logistic regression to generate adjusted odds ratios (OR) …
The Effects Of Guilt And Sadness On Sugar Consumption, Sarah Lefebvre, Jonathan Hasford, Ze Wang
The Effects Of Guilt And Sadness On Sugar Consumption, Sarah Lefebvre, Jonathan Hasford, Ze Wang
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
This research examines how the discrete negative emotions of guilt and sadness impact individual preference for carbohydrates, specifically in the form of sugar. Using Cognitive Appraisal Theory and research in biological psychology, we identify how these two discrete emotions influence the release of cortisol, which impacts sugar preferences. The results of four studies indicate that consumers select and prepare foods with higher amounts of sugar when experiencing sadness relative to when they feel guilt. Implications for public policy as well as marketing practitioners are discussed.

Sustainability In Internationalization Of Higher Education-Curriculum Internationalization As A Means To An End?, Rahul Putty
Sustainability In Internationalization Of Higher Education-Curriculum Internationalization As A Means To An End?, Rahul Putty
Faculty work
Multilayered processes of globalization, in recent decades, have loosened higher education’s predominantly national frameworks and have embedded them in contexts that are “multiscalar” and “multisectoral”, captured by the ubiquitous term “internationalization”. Internationalization, seen to be a response by higher education institutions and systems to processes of globalization, is no longer a peripheral activity within higher education institutions but has come to guide the very logic of their functioning, affecting multiple areas of decision-making (Altbach & Knight, 2007). These “qualitative leaps” have altered the conceptualization of internationalization as a “gradual change” to a purposeful systematization and routinizing of the idea in …

Modern Condition Of The Problem Of Lipid Peroxide Oxidation, B.U. Iriskulov
Modern Condition Of The Problem Of Lipid Peroxide Oxidation, B.U. Iriskulov
Central Asian Journal of Medicine
This article assesses the state of the problem of lipid peroxidation. Free radical processes are highly reactive, and are essential components of the normal functioning of cells. Hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals and singlet oxygen are known. The formation of the radical anion of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide leads to a "respiratory explosion" (an increase in the consumption of oxygen by neutrophils, macrophages, etc.). In peroxisome oxidase, oxygen is reduced to hydrogen peroxide (urotoxicity, glycolate oxidase, L-amino acid oxidase). These radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) have a bactericidal effect.

The Unruly Womb In Early Modern English Drama: Plotting Women's Biology On The Stage, Ursula Potter
The Unruly Womb In Early Modern English Drama: Plotting Women's Biology On The Stage, Ursula Potter
Late Tudor and Stuart Drama
This study provides an accessible, informative and entertaining introduction to women’s sexual health as presented on the early modern stage, and how dramatists coded for it. Beginning with the rise of green sickness (the disease of virgins) from its earliest reference in drama in the 1560s, Ursula Potter traces a continuing fascination with the womb by dramatists through to the oxymoron of the chaste sex debate in the 1640s. She illuminates how playwrights both satirized and perpetuated the notion of the womb’s insatiable appetite.
