The bovine lactoferricin L6 (RRWQWR) has been previously identified as a novel cell-penetrating peptide (CPP) that is able to efficiently internalize into human cells. L6 interacts with quantum dots (QDs) noncovalently to generate stable L6/QD complexes that enter cells by endocytosis. In this study, we demonstrate a modified L6 (HL6; CHHHHHRRWQWRHHHHHC), in which short polyhistidine peptides are introduced into both flanks of L6, has enhanced cell-penetrating ability in human bronchoalveolar carcinoma A549 cells. The mechanism of cellular uptake of HL6/QD complexes is primarily direct membrane translocation rather than endocytosis. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), but not pyrenebutyrate (PB), ethanol, oleic acid, or …

My Palate Hung With Starlight: A Gastrocritical Reading Of Seamus Heaney’S Poetry, Anke Klitzing
Articles
Nobel-prize winning poet Seamus Heaney is celebrated for his rich verses recalling his home in the Northern Irish countryside of County Derry. Yet while the imaginative links to nature in his poetry have already been critically explored, little attention has been paid so far to his rendering of local food and foodways. From ploughing, digging potatoes and butter-churning to picking blackberries, Heaney sketches not only the everyday activities of mid-20th century rural Ireland, but also the social dynamics of community and identity and the socio-cultural symbiosis embedded in those practices. Larger questions of love, life and death also infiltrate the …

© 2019, The Author(s). This study seeks to investigate the variations associated with lane lateral locations and days of the week in the stochastic and dynamic transition of traffic regimes (DTTR). In the proposed analysis, hierarchical regression models fitted using Bayesian frameworks were used to calibrate the transition probabilities that describe the DTTR. Datasets of two sites on a freeway facility located in Jacksonville, Florida, were selected for the analysis. The traffic speed thresholds to define traffic regimes were estimated using the Gaussian mixture model (GMM). The GMM revealed that two and three regimes were adequate mixture components for estimating …

Habitat destruction is the single greatest anthropogenic threat to biodiversity. Decades of research on this issue have led to the accumulation of hundreds of data sets comparing species assemblages in larger, intact, habitats to smaller, more fragmented, habitats. Despite this, little synthesis or consensus has been achieved, primarily because of non-standardized sampling methodology and analyses of notoriously scale-dependent response variables (i.e., species richness). To be able to compare and contrast the results of habitat fragmentation on species’ assemblages, it is necessary to have the underlying data on species abundances and sampling intensity, so that standardization can be achieved. To accomplish …

Background: Breast cancer remains a major health problem in the world. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype with very poor prognosis. Up to now, the mechanism behind TNBC's activity is still unclear and no candidate drug target has been identified. Thus, it is of critical importance to elucidate the pathways in TNBC and identify the relevant biomarkers. Recent studies showed that ganglioside D3 synthase (GD3s) played a very important role in development of cancers. However, the physiological functions and associated pathways of GD3s in TNBC are still unclear.

Exploring Yoga As A Leisure-Stress Coping Strategy Among Adults With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Molly Richardson
All Theses
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are at a greater risk for experiencing stress, particularly stress associated with negative interpersonal relations, than individuals without disabilities. Research has found that individuals with IDD often use maladaptive coping strategies to manage stress. The purpose of this study was to explore whether participation in a seven-and-a-half week yoga intervention served as a leisure-stress coping strategy for adults with IDD. Using a multi-method research design, six participants completed pre- and post-Lifestress Inventory assessments, and nine participants completed post-intervention semi-structured interviews focused on yoga and coping. Qualitative results indicated that yoga served as an …
Diamond Zoysiagrass Response And Seedhead Control Using Plant Growth Regulators, Silas Ledford
Diamond Zoysiagrass Response And Seedhead Control Using Plant Growth Regulators, Silas Ledford
All Theses
Golfers have steadily increased demands for putting green quality, including distance and smoothness. ‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass has emerged as a viable C4 turfgrass to be used by golf courses as putting greens or fairways and tees. ‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass exhibits multiple benefits over other C4 and C3 turfgrasses, but an undesirable trait is seedhead production.
Three studies were conducted at Clemson University from April 2018 to November 2019 to investigate the effects of plant growth regulators (PGRs) on ‘Diamond’ zoysiagrass’ turf quality (TQ), lateral recovery and seedhead production. Study 1 tested PGRs in a field setting on the TQ, seedhead production and …
Better Together? Combining Cover Crop Mulches, Organic Herbicides, And Weed Seed Biological Control In Reduced-Tillage Crop Systems, Danielle Gray Lewis
Better Together? Combining Cover Crop Mulches, Organic Herbicides, And Weed Seed Biological Control In Reduced-Tillage Crop Systems, Danielle Gray Lewis
All Theses
Weed management in organic agriculture is one of the greatest challenges farmers face and many rely heavily on mechanical tactics that are labor-intensive and negatively impact the environment. Although more complex, farmers could integrate various cultural, chemical, and biological weed management tools to potentially reduce the need for tillage. A weed management system that incorporates the use of cover crop mulch could suppress weeds and promote weed seed predation services by granivorous insects. Since cover crops decompose as the season progresses, precise applications of organic herbicides could extend weed management towards the end of the season. In our studies, we …
Differential Gene Expression In Tendinopathy: Insights Into The Failure Of Wound Healing, Michael Maggio
Differential Gene Expression In Tendinopathy: Insights Into The Failure Of Wound Healing, Michael Maggio
All Theses
Tendon injury can occur from activity-induced overuse, complete laceration or aging-related degeneration and these injuries commonly fail to wound heal without clinical treatment. Moreover, activity-induced overuse accounts for approximately half of all sports injuries and has highest occurrence rates in athletes playing football, baseball and basketball. Current non invasive technique to rest and ice the damaged tissue in combination with either oral NSAIDS or corticosteroid injections has shown little promise with only ~60% of cases regaining functionality of the tendon (Paterno et al., 2013).
From the literature, this seems to be caused by a combination of poorly perfused tissue along …
A Multimodal Exploration Of Altered Mechanical And Histological Properties In Tendons With Degenerative Tendinopathy, Olivia Newkirk
A Multimodal Exploration Of Altered Mechanical And Histological Properties In Tendons With Degenerative Tendinopathy, Olivia Newkirk
All Theses
Tendons injuries occur in people of all ages and can range from soreness and inflammation to full rupture requiring surgical repair. Larger injuries are typically preceded by accumulated damage that can change the strength of the tendon, and the way it responds to stress. A multimodal analysis of the changing properties serves to elucidate some of the changes both histologically and chemically, and how they affect the global properties like strength. Literature cites a number of changes including increased glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content, disordered collagen fibers, increased cellularity, increased cross-sectional area, and decreased Young’s Modulus.
This paper analyzes these five altered …

Accessing Healthy Food: Behavioral And Environmental Determinants Among Low-Income Populations, Abiodun Tolulope Atoloye
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
On average, low-income individuals have poorer diet quality compared to their high-income counterparts. However, improved food access may offer opportunities to improve diet among this population. This study examines how the low-income population navigates between barriers, resources, and opportunities to acquire healthy foods in different settings.
Chapter 3 examined how the use of a farmers’ market incentive program among the low-income population impacts F&V consumption. We observed no effect on F&V consumption due to program participation but users of the program have a significantly higher F&V consumption than non-users. Chapter 4 identified transportation difficulties as a barrier to the uptake …

The Response Of Utah Lake's Plant And Algal Community Structure To Cultural Eutrophication, Leighton R. King
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Human activities have long had a negative impact on the water quality of freshwater lakes around the world. Utah Lake, located in north-central Utah, has been a subject of such impacts, as the lake experiences recurrent harmful algal blooms during the summer months. Lake warnings and closures have made the public increasingly aware of the ecological and economic impact of these blooms. The objectives of this study were to: 1) compare historical and present-day water quality and ecosystem conditions using environmental data contained in sediment cores, 2) identify whether, and when, Utah Lake transitioned from clearwater to turbid conditions, and …

Investigating The Roles Of Bacterial Endosymbionts In The Evolution Of Adelgidae (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha), Kathryn M. Weglarz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Insects form close partnerships, or symbioses, with bacteria. These partnerships allow the insects to use resources that would be unavailable to them otherwise. Certain insects, hemipterans, are able to feed on nutrient-poor plant-sap because these bacteria supplement their diets. While this association is beneficial for both the insect and bacteria, it also comes with consequences: the genomes of bacterial symbionts typically undergo extreme degradation, becoming small and lacking many genes necessary for typical bacterial functioning. In the Hemiptera, aphids, mealybugs, cicadas, true bugs, and their relatives, these bacterial partnerships tend to be stable over millions of years. However, adelgids (Aphidoidea: …
Herbage Characteristics Affecting Intake By Dairy Heifers Grazing Grass-Monoculture And Grass-Birdsfoot Trefoil Pastures, Marcus F. Rose
Herbage Characteristics Affecting Intake By Dairy Heifers Grazing Grass-Monoculture And Grass-Birdsfoot Trefoil Pastures, Marcus F. Rose
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Pasture-based dairies have become more prevalent in recent years due to a higher proportion of organic milk demand and production. Organic certification requires that animals must graze at least 120 days in each growing season. However, dry matter intake is often limited when dairy animals receive most of their herbage from pasture, resulting in lower animal performance and milk production. The purpose of this study was to analyze the complimentary effect of high energy grasses with birdsfoot trefoil (BFT) tannins to improve intake of dairy heifers. Jersey heifers were rotationally grazed for 105 days in 2017 and 2018 on eight …

Wildfire In The West: An Initial Analysis Of Wildfire Impacts On Hydrology And Riverbed Grain Size In Relation To Salmonid Habitat, Natalie J. Gillard
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Historically wildfires have been beneficial to forests, however, human developments have encroached on forests when wildfire was artificially suppressed by federal and state agencies. The area burned by wildfire each year has increased twenty-fold in the past three decades. Large, high severity fires pose increased threats to human and aquatic communities within and downstream of the burned area due to post-wildfire effects on flooding and sedimentation. We need to understand the impacts of wildfires to be able to mitigate their damages and to recognize their potential benefits. This research addresses the questions: 1) Do wildfires impact rural and urban economies …
Expression Systems For Synthetic Spider Silk Protein Production, Michaela R. Hugie
Expression Systems For Synthetic Spider Silk Protein Production, Michaela R. Hugie
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Spider silk is a biodegradable and biocompatible natural material that is stronger than steel and more elastic than nylon. These properties make spider silk a desirable material for many commercial products, ranging from textiles to biomedical materials. Due to spiders’ cannibalistic and territorial nature it is impossible to farm them to produce spider silk at a high enough yield to meet product demands. Therefore, a bioengineered synthetic process is necessary to produce spider silk. Synthetic spider silk has been produced in bacteria, goats, yeast, plants, mammalian cells and silkworms, but none of these processes provided a commercially viable yield or …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Parent knowledge of ASD may be relevant to early identification and intervention services for children with ASD. By understanding how knowledgeable parents of young children are about ASD, researchers and practitioners can intervene and educate this population. This study sought to determine the knowledge base of ASD among parents with children five years and younger and if developmental, behavioral, and autism-related concerns predict knowledge of ASD. The sample of parents consisted of 167 mothers and fathers. All participants completed a knowledge questionnaire (i.e., ASKSG) and reported their level of developmental, behavioral, and autism-related concerns of their oldest child between the …
Effects Of Soil-Borne Pathogens On Seedling Establishment Patterns In Forest Systems, Eric P. Sodja
Effects Of Soil-Borne Pathogens On Seedling Establishment Patterns In Forest Systems, Eric P. Sodja
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Janzen-Connell mechanism is proposed to maintain plant diversity: predators and diseases of seeds reduce the number of seeds that survive near a parent tree, but allow seeds far from the parent tree to grow into adulthood. In the area where seeds don’t survive, seedlings from other tree species which are not affected by the seed consumer can grow. At large scales, this effect is thought to increase overall plant diversity. Soil-borne pathogens can contribute to seed mortality in this way, but we don’t know how important different parts of their lifecycle are in creating Janzen-Connell patterns. To determine the …

Learning and memory are two intertwined cognitive functions of the human brain. This paper shows how a family of biologically-inspired self-organizing neural networks, known as fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory (fusion ART), may provide a viable approach to realizing the learning and memory functions. Fusion ART extends the single-channel Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) model to learn multimodal pattern associative mappings. As a natural extension of ART, various forms of fusion ART have been developed for a myriad of learning paradigms, ranging from unsupervised learning to supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, multimodal learning, reinforcement learning, and sequence learning. In addition, fusion ART models …
