Investigating The Eeg Error-Related Negativity In College Students With Adhd, Anxiety, And Depression, Mariacristina Canini Dec 2019

Investigating The Eeg Error-Related Negativity In College Students With Adhd, Anxiety, And Depression, Mariacristina Canini

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Error-related negativity (ERN) is an event-related potential elicited by the commission of errors. It appears as a negative deflection peaking between 50ms and 100ms after an erroneous response. Previous literature demonstrated that individuals who suffer from either anxiety or depression display a higher ERN amplitude compared to a control group. It has also been shown that people with ADHD display a lower ERN amplitude. Based on these findings, we investigated the relationships between these three disorders and their effects on the amplitude of the ERN. We recruited thirty-one students at East Tennessee State University and gathered data on their level …

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Observing the recent success of the deep learning (DL) technology in multiple life-changing application areas, e.g., autonomous driving, image/video search and discovery, natural language processing, etc., many new opportunities have presented themselves. One of the biggest ones lies in applying DL in accelerating the drug discovery, where millions of human lives could potentially be saved. However, applying DL into the drug discovery task turns out to be non-trivial. The most successful DL methods take fix-sized tensors/matrices, e.g., images, or sequences of tokens, e.g., sentences with variant numbers of words, as their inputs. However, none of these registers with the inputs …

Recruitment Of Polycomb-Group Proteins At Giant In Drosophila Embryos, Elnaz Ghotbi Ravandi Dec 2019

Recruitment Of Polycomb-Group Proteins At Giant In Drosophila Embryos, Elnaz Ghotbi Ravandi

Biological Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Polycomb Group (PcG) proteins are evolutionarily conserved epigenetic transcriptional regulators that maintain the transcriptional repression of silenced genes. PcG mediated silencing is divided into two phases: initiation and maintenance. During the initiation phase, PcG proteins initially recognize and bind to their target genes. Once PcG proteins are recruited to their target genes, they can maintain transcriptional repression through an unlimited number of cell cycles. Most studies on PcG proteins have been focused on the maintenance phase of PcG silencing, and the molecular mechanisms by which PcG proteins are initially recruited to their target genes remained unknown. Two models have been …

Characterization Of The Dimerization Domains On The Mannose-6-Phosphate/Insulin-Like Growth Factor Ii Receptor, Tyler Degener

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

The mannose-6-phosphate/insulin-like growth factor II (M6P/IGF2) receptor is a transmembrane protein known to sequester growth factors from the extracellular matrix. This behavior suggests a mechanism of tumor suppression. Structurally, the receptor’s extracellular region is segmented into 15 homologous repeats, which are divided further into 5 triplet domains, labelled 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and 13-15. What is notable about the triplets is their propensity to form dimers with triplets on a second M6P/IGF2 receptor. In fact, previous studies indicate that this protein functions optimally when dimerized. Thus, the purpose of this experiment is to characterize these domain interactions. Using a urea …

Learning Robot Manipulation Tasks Via Observation, Michail Theofanidis

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The coexistence of humans and robots has been the aspiration of many scientific endeavors in the past century. Most anthropomorphic or industrial robots are highly articulated and complex machines, which are designed to carry out tasks that often involve the manipulation of physical objects. Traditionally, robots learn how to perform such tasks with the aid of a human programmer or operator. In this regard, the human acts as a teacher who provides a demonstration of a task. From the data of the demonstration, the robot must learn a state-action mapping that accomplishes the task. This state-action mapping is often addressed …

A New Age Of Evolution: Protecting The Consumer’S Moral And Legal Right To Know Through The Clear And Transparent Labeling Of All Genetically Modified Foods, Halie M. Evans

Journal of Law and Health

The United States government, until recently, did not require the labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). On July 29, 2016, President Barack Obama signed into law the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (NBFDS). This law directs the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to create regulations that require manufacturers to disclose certain bioengineered products on food labels. On December 20, 2018, the USDA released the final regulations for the NBFDS, which requires food manufactures, importers, and certain retailers to ensure bioengineered foods are appropriately disclosed. The final regulations include provisions that will leave the majority of GMO derived foods unlabeled. …

Parens Patriae And Parental Rights: When Should The State Override Parental Medical Decisions?, Elchanan G. Stern

Journal of Law and Health

Alfie Evans was a terminally ill British child whose parents, clinging to hope, were desperately trying to save his life. Hospital authorities disagreed and petitioned the court to enjoin the parents from removing him and taking him elsewhere for treatment. The court stepped in and compelled the hospital to discontinue life support and claimed that further treatment was not in the child’s best interest. This note discusses the heartbreaking stories of Alfie and two other children whose parents’ medical decisions on their behalf were overridden by the court. It argues that courts should never decide that death is in a …

Addiction-Informed Immigration Reform, Rebecca Sharpless Dec 2019

Addiction-Informed Immigration Reform, Rebecca Sharpless

Washington Law Review

Immigration law fails to align with the contemporary understanding of substance addiction as a medical condition. The Immigration and Nationality Act regards noncitizens who suffer from drug or alcohol substance use disorder as immoral and undesirable. Addiction is a ground of exclusion and deportation and can prevent the finding of “good moral character” needed for certain immigration applications. Substance use disorder can lead to criminal behavior that lands noncitizens, including lawful permanent residents, in removal proceedings with no defense. The time has come for immigration law to catch up to today’s understanding of addiction. The damage done by failing to …
