Evolution - #4: Genetic Drift And Founder Effect, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall
Unit 1: Evolution
Genetic drift is a term used to describe chance fluctuations in the allelic frequencies in a population over time. The effects of genetic drift tend to be very minor in large populations, but they can be quite significant in small populations. Alleles are different functional forms in which a gene might exist. Humans have two alleles, sometimes the same but sometimes different, of most of their genes. In any population, it is possible to determine the frequency of all alleles. If these alleles get passed on to the next generation at random, then we should expect to see approximately the …

Evolution - #6: Selection Simulation, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall
Unit 1: Evolution
A modern understanding of the theory of evolution revolves around the selection of certain types within a population that over long time periods eventually leads to change of the species. This descent with modification is modeled with this activity, and leads to a subsequent lesson that has students reading about research into examples of speciation.

Evolution - #5: Globin Gene Evolution, Jessica Amacher, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch, Sarah O'Leary-Driscoll, Crystal Randall
Unit 1: Evolution
For this lesson, students are guided through the steps necessary to compare nucleotide and amino acid sequences available at the National Center for Biotechnology Information that is maintained by the National Institutes of Health. The lesson starts with an examination of the alpha-globin gene. Alpha-globin is one of the proteins that constitutes hemoglobin. Student look at the various sequences of this gene that have been deposited at NCBI with a goal of determining alternative forms of the gene. The lesson then broadens the scope of comparison to include members of the globin protein family. Students create a phylogenetic tree that …

Cellular Corrosion Of Cocrmo Total Knee Implants: Understanding Underlying Mechanisms Through Retrieval Analysis And Simulated Inflammatory Conditions, Griffin Heise
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Introduction. Total joint arthroplasty is considered one of the most beneficial aspects of modern orthopedic surgery. Due to the increase in population, obesity rates, and medical advances, total joint replacements have become more commonplace in the United States. Recently, a unique type of damage has been investigated in cobalt-chrome (CoCr) implants that remains poorly understood and highly controversial. Originally, it was believed that this damage type was caused by inflammatory cells directly attacking the metal surface, leading to damage of the oxide layer. However, damage caused by electrocautery tools has shown identical characteristics, leading some to believe this is the …

The Negotiator's Role In A Buyer-Seller Game, Joseph Gaudy
The Negotiator's Role In A Buyer-Seller Game, Joseph Gaudy
Graduate Theses and Capstone Projects (excluding DNP)
In game theory, buyer-seller games rarely utilize a negotiating third party. Any negotiations are typically conducted by the buyer and seller. This study, motivated by the real estate market, uses sequentially and simultaneously played game models to explore the influence a self-interested, negotiating, third party has on player payoffs. For the sequential model, a game tree is utilized to demonstrate player actions, preferences, and outcomes. The weak sequential equilibrium is calculated using Gambit[1] and shows optimality in player payoffs to exist when the seller’s and realtor’s strategies align according to the current market. For the simultaneous model, expected payoff functions …
An Approach To Fast Multi-Robot Exploration In Buildings With Inaccessible Spaces, Matt Mcneill, Damian Lyons
An Approach To Fast Multi-Robot Exploration In Buildings With Inaccessible Spaces, Matt Mcneill, Damian Lyons
Faculty Publications
The rapid exploration of unknown environments is a common application of autonomous multi-robot teams. For some types of exploration missions, a mission designer may possess some rudimentary knowledge about the area to be explored. For example, the dimensions of a building may be known, but not its floor layout or the location of furniture and equipment inside. For this type of mission, the Space- Based Potential Field (SBPF) method is an approach to multirobot exploration which leverages a priori knowledge of area bounds to determine robot motion. Explored areas and obstacles exert a repulsive force, and unexplored areas exert an …

Modeling Elementary Students’ Ideas About Heredity: A Comparison Of Curricular Interventions, Cory Forbes, Dante Cisterna, Devarati Bhattacharya, Ranu Roy
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Learning about heredity is important across the K–12 continuum. However, these ideas may be challenging for students. We examined third-grade students’ ideas about heredity in the context of a new, six-week, model-based science unit that uses corn as a model organism to support students’ ideas about heredity. We analyzed data collected during implementation of the unit, including student artifacts and interviews. We compared these data to those from a pilot version of the curriculum – implemented in the prior year – that was focused on the same disciplinary concepts but was not designed around scientific modeling. Our findings illustrate levels …

Introduction
Improvements in overall survival (OS) and quality of life (QoL) are clinically relevant outcomes that should guide clinical decision-making. Patients with MPNs can live with their disease for a long period of time, which increases the importance of understanding the impact of treatment in regards to a patients’ Health-Related QoL. Therefore, including PROs in clinical trials has become paramount in facilitating informed treatment decisions made by health care providers and patients. Furthermore, the FDA encourages the implementation of patient-centric measures in clinical trials.
Objective
We aimed to evaluate the frequency at which PRO measures are utilized as study endpoints …

Quantifying Carbon Stocks Within The Androscoggin Land Trust, Olivia Lamarche, Kirsten Pelletier, Eric Viera
Community Engaged Research Reports
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the burning of fossil fuels for transportation and electricity, land use and deforestation, agriculture, and industry are causing unprecedented rates of climate change. The climate emergency is intensifying as temperature extremes increase, snow and ice cover declines, and the oceans warm and acidify. The need to mitigate climate change is rapidly increasing and many mitigation efforts focus on the reduction of GHG outputs into the atmosphere, primarily the development of new renewable energy technologies in order to reduce the burning of fossil fuels. While a decreased reliance on fossil fuels is a key climate solution, …

Soil Characteristics Drive Ficaria Verna Abundance And Reproductive Output, Justin P. Kermack, Emily Rauschert
Soil Characteristics Drive Ficaria Verna Abundance And Reproductive Output, Justin P. Kermack, Emily Rauschert
Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications
Lesser celandine (Ficaria verna Huds.), an invasive plant from Europe, is becoming widespread in river valleys throughout the northeastern United States and the Pacific Northwest. Its high rate of asexual bulbil and tuber production creates dense infestations threatening native spring ephemerals. Ficaria verna abundance and reproductive output (seeds, bulbils, and tubers) were examined in invaded transects spanning a disturbance gradient away from a river. Site characteristics (photosynthetically active radiation [PAR], soil pH, moisture, texture, and nutrients) were quantified to examine their roles in plant abundance and reproduction. A larger-scale study examined random transects not specifically chosen based on F. …
