Trihydroxybenzoic Acid Analogs As A Potential Drug Formulation For Inflammatory Diseases, Haleema Irfan, Foram Madiyar
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The project seeks to establish the link between toll-like receptors (TLR) in the pathogenesis of inflammation and formulate a trihydroxy benzoic acid (THBA) analog as a potential drug formulation for inflammatory diseases.
We aim to develop a stable drug-polymer complex of THBA using pH-sensitive polymers that will target inflammation. Various analogs of THBA will be synthesized with nano-co-precipitation experimentation for optimization using a variety of polymers, solvents, and stabilizers to increase the solubility in aqueous conditions and determine the most effective combination. The particle size, drug loading, and dissolution profile under various pH are discussed with various polymers. The formulated …

Photo-Double Ionization Of Water, Conner L. Penson, Giorgio Turri
Student Research Symposium (SRS)
The goal of this experiment was to measure coincident 2-electron emissions from water molecules with unequal energies to analyze the direct emission processes of H20. The ELETTRA Synchrotron was utilized for its highly tunable photon selection and its coincidence measurement capabilities. A photon flux of specific energy was fired into a thin stream of water vapor in near-perfect vacuum and electron detectors at known angles in the plane of emission were scanned through different energy and emission angles. The detectors only recorded a measurement if it was in coincidence with the measurement of another detector to ensure that …

Seeing In Color: How Are Teachers Perceiving Our Diverse Autistic Students?, Merida Lang
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
Although the discipline gap between Black and White students is well documented and the discipline gap between students with disabilities and those without has also been researched, the discipline gap between autistic students of color and White students has received very little attention. This essay asks educators to consider the ways in which autistic students of color exist in a specific cross section of double-discrimination and considers what can be done to reduce unconscious bias, including developing a broader and more diverse understanding of autistic culture.

Truffaut’S L’Enfant Sauvage (The Wild Child, 1970): Evoking Autism And The Nascent “Eugenic Atlantic”, Joy C. Schaefer
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
This essay analyzes François Truffaut’s L’Enfant sauvage (The Wild Child, 1970) as an early representation of autism that metaphorizes the neurodiverse child as the colonial subject. The film takes place in 1798, only a decade after the French Revolution, and depicts the true events of the “wild boy of Aveyron,” a feral child found in the Southern French forest when he was twelve years old. Before the film’s production, Truffaut—who also plays the boy’s teacher, Dr. Jean-Marc Itard—collected articles and books on autism and viewed videos of autistic children to create his main character’s behavioral patterns. The film …
High Rate Quasi-Steady-State Pattern Visual Evoked Potentials For Brain-Computer Interface, Ibrahim Kaya
High Rate Quasi-Steady-State Pattern Visual Evoked Potentials For Brain-Computer Interface, Ibrahim Kaya
Open Access Dissertations
Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs) are electrophysiological signals recorded from occipital areas of the scalp in response to visual stimulation. VEPs are used for clinical monitoring of diseases and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs). Depending on the stimulation rate, there are two types of VEPs, transient (low stimulation rates < 3Hz) and Steady-State (higher stimulation rates >5Hz). However, a novel VEP stimulation paradigm was developed at the University of Miami, Neurosensory Laboratory. This paradigm generates low jittered VEPs similar to Steady-State VEP (SSVEP) and called Quasi-Steady State VEPs (QSS-VEPs). QSS paradigm has proven itself in the fast acquisition of Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABRs) and Pattern Electroretinograms (PERGs). One major advantage …

Introduction
Across the African Diaspora, hair is synonymous with identity. As such, Black women use a variety of hair products, which often contain more endocrine-disrupting chemicals than products used by women of other races. An emerging body of research is linking chemicals in hair products to breast cancer, but there is no validated instrument that measures constructs related to hair, identity, and breast health. The objective of this study was to develop and validate the Black Identity, Hair Product Use, and Breast Cancer Scale (BHBS) in a diverse sample of Black women to measure the social and cultural constructs associated …
Image Restoration Using Automatic Damaged Regions Detection And Machine Learning-Based Inpainting Technique, Chloe Martin-King
Image Restoration Using Automatic Damaged Regions Detection And Machine Learning-Based Inpainting Technique, Chloe Martin-King
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
In this dissertation we propose two novel image restoration schemes. The first pertains to automatic detection of damaged regions in old photographs and digital images of cracked paintings. In cases when inpainting mask generation cannot be completely automatic, our detection algorithm facilitates precise mask creation, particularly useful for images containing damage that is tedious to annotate or difficult to geometrically define. The main contribution of this dissertation is the development and utilization of a new inpainting technique, region hiding, to repair a single image by training a convolutional neural network on various transformations of that image. Region hiding is also …

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications
A neurostimulator was investigated in this paper posthumously. Device was presented to our anatomical gift program. Investigation was multi-fold and contained visual inspection, using an optical microscope, and mechanical and electrical testing of leads and its insulator. It was concluded that the device could have been damaged during implantation, in vivo, during removal, and/or during transportation to author’s laboratories. The damage observed on the lead insulation is similar to that which can occur due to anchoring of the lead and hardening due to oxidation. Insulation stiffness was determined to be 1/10 of new insulator. The results reported here on the …

Actual Harm Means It Is Too Late: How Rosenbach V. Six Flags Demonstrates Effective Biometric Information Privacy Law, Chloe Stepney
Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review
Technology is rapidly advancing, and the law is trying to keep up. While this challenge is not new, technological advancements are impacting privacy rights in unprecedented ways. Using a fingerprint to clock in at work or face identification to unlock a smartphone provides ease and convenience, but at what cost?
Currently, there is no federal law that regulates the collection, use, and storage of biometric information in the private sector. On a local level, three states have enacted laws that specifically address biometrics. Of those, the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) in Illinois provides the strongest protections for consumers, who …

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Post-menopausal osteoporosis as a consequence of estrogen depletion is a growing concern for women in the United States. As more women take on executive positions and experience sleep deprivation, there is the potential for up regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha. It follows that the homeostatic imbalance of osteoclastic and osteoblastic activity leads to a greater risk of disease. Bisphosphonates generally, and Zolendronate specifically works by decreasing the number of osteoclasts. This current study investigated the impact of Zolendronate on the concentrations of tumor necrosis factor alpha-type (TNFɑ) in 32 ovariectomized Wistar rats. Throughout a five …

Modeling The Effects Of Distribution System Topology On Water Quality, Chun-Ying Chao
Modeling The Effects Of Distribution System Topology On Water Quality, Chun-Ying Chao
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Inadequate treatment of drinking water causes the formation of disinfection by-products and the regrowth of harmful microbial species. Various studies have addressed the problem of water quality monitoring, but very few have employed topological analysis, a valuable mathematical tool widely applied in biological, business, and social research. This thesis examines the relationship between the topological properties of water distribution systems and water-quality models. In particular, the research proposes a novel framework for mapping network topological attributes to water-quality models. This research adopts topological metrics to assess the accuracy of the predictions of chlorine concentrations in dead ends. It examines four …

This study focused on the survey of 34 freshwater snail samples collected from NE Mongolia for larval flatworm parasites in the class Trematoda. 32 of the snail samples were infected, and the parasites were identified based on morphology and DNA sequences. Nine of the identified parasite samples were screened for the presence of bacterial endosymbionts in the genus Neorickettsia in the family Anaplasmataceae. All of the samples screened for Neorickettsia were negative for the bacterium. Species of Neorickettsia are known to cause several diseases such as Sennetsu Fever (in humans) and Potomac Horse Fever. There have been relatively few reliable …
A Shift In Global Thought And Practice: Assessing The Impacts Of The Human Security Paradigm On Global Public Health, Elizabeth Livingston Leone
A Shift In Global Thought And Practice: Assessing The Impacts Of The Human Security Paradigm On Global Public Health, Elizabeth Livingston Leone
Honors College Theses
With the increasing emphasis on health through human security since the 1990s by the United Nations, scholars have debated how human security has influenced public health. I examine how the idea of human security has become a paradigm and if this paradigm has adopted in public health programs. I argue that the rise of human security has led to an emphasis on the role of global actors, preventative care and health education when states adopt the paradigm. This adoption should in turn improve public health in Ghana and the Ivory Coast.
Determination Of Optimal Mild Organic Solvents Of Pdnps For Carbon-Carbon Coupling Reactions, Trina Biswas
Determination Of Optimal Mild Organic Solvents Of Pdnps For Carbon-Carbon Coupling Reactions, Trina Biswas
Honors College Theses
The synthesis of nanoparticles is an increasingly popular field of interest. The application of nanoparticles is especially popular in the field of nanocatalysts. Metal nanoparticles (NPs) are favorable for catalysis because of the large surface area to volume ratio, which allows them to catalyze a variety of reactions using lesser amounts of active material. As the field of nanoparticle research expands, efforts are being made to create more sustainable approaches to the synthesis of these particles. This research sought to translate the benefits of peptide-based synthesis to organic solvents and use less toxic organic solvents for carbon-carbon coupling reactions, like …

Rain Gardens: The Return Of Ecosystem Services, Katie Dehaan
Honors Theses
In the modern world impervious surfaces, especially in urban areas, abound. These include roads, highways, sidewalks, parking lots, and roofs that have replaced permeable surfaces, mainly open land, forests, and wetlands. Rainwater runs off of these surfaces collecting pollutants on its way to permeable areas. Rain gardens collect and process rainwater. Native plants with deep root systems process large volumes of rainwater and the microorganisms living in the soils and roots can process pollutants. The purpose of my research was to find out what variables affect species presence or absence in rain gardens. Species presence or absence at the time …

Migration is a common life history strategy across the animal tree of life. This behavior is energetically demanding and may trigger strong selection for the evolution of an optimal ecomorphology to lessen energetic costs, yet the ecomorphology of migratory aquatic species remains poorly understood. Previous studies have demonstrated that migratory fishes exhibit predictable phenotypic patterns in body size evolution in response to evolving migration: migratory fishes are larger than non-migratory fishes. Migratory fishes may also have functional traits (e.g. fin shape) associated with locomotion that have experienced similar selective forces and exhibit predictable evolutionary patterns, resulting in migratory lineages sharing …
