The Attitudes Of Christians Towards Homosexuality, Transsexuality And Transgenderism, Ryan Tack Jun 2019

The Attitudes Of Christians Towards Homosexuality, Transsexuality And Transgenderism, Ryan Tack

Senior Honors Theses

The different attitudes Christians have towards transsexual, transgender, and homosexual behaviors have long been an area in need of investigation. To further the relevant library of research, an anonymous online survey was distributed through SurveyMonkey that attempted to see how Christians felt and how these attitudes compared to those of other groups. Ultimately, attitudes regarding transsexual and transgender behaviors showed a strong trend towards neutrality. Attitudes towards homosexuality showed a strong trend towards neutrality with an additional trend towards positivity.

Gαi And Gɣ30a Act Downstream Of Tre1 In Drosophila Courtship, Emily Mu Jun 2019

Gαi And Gɣ30a Act Downstream Of Tre1 In Drosophila Courtship, Emily Mu

McNair Research Journal SJSU

The role of genes in morphological development is well understood for a variety of model organisms, but there remains a gap in our understanding of how genetics mediate behavior. Are there master genes that regulate behavior? Answering this question will lead to a better understanding of the development and function of the central nervous system, eventually allowing us to map out the pathways that regulate specific behaviors. We are using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism and the male courtship ritual as the behavior of interest to study the relationships between genes, neural development, and behavior. Trapped in endoderm 1 …

Insulin Signal Transduction Mediates Ethanol-Induced Feeding Dysfunction In A Fly Model Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Manae Matsubara Jun 2019

Insulin Signal Transduction Mediates Ethanol-Induced Feeding Dysfunction In A Fly Model Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Manae Matsubara

McNair Research Journal SJSU

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the leading cause of congenital intellectual disabilities in the Western World, with a worldwide prevalence of 2-11% of all births. FASD is preventable but recent epidemiological studies suggest that public awareness campaigns have reached the limits of their effectiveness. Therefore, research is shifting from prevention to treatment and mitigation of symptoms. No biological treatments for FASD exist, due in part to the fact the cellular mechanisms of alcohol toxicity are not well-understood. Developmental alcohol exposure (DAE) causes a variety of deleterious effects in both vertebrates and invertebrates, including increased mortality, slow growth, learning and …

Toxic Masculinity: An Outcome Of Colonialism And Its Effects On The Latinx/Chicanx Lgbtq+ Community, Monica Martinez Jun 2019

Toxic Masculinity: An Outcome Of Colonialism And Its Effects On The Latinx/Chicanx Lgbtq+ Community, Monica Martinez

McNair Research Journal SJSU

This research examines masculinity in the Latinx community within the U.S. Much of the theory behind masculinity involves discussing toxic masculinity and machismo. To do this, I look at film, poetry, and literature to discuss how toxic masculinity affects Queer Latinxs. Although this research focuses on fictional characters and the analysis of fictional works, these characters’ stories do not fall far from current LGBTQ+ Latinxs who may be experiencing the same issues. I examine La Mission, Mosquita y Mari, Gun Hill Road, “I am Joaquin,” “La Loca de la Raza Cosmica,” Rain God, and What Night …

Teacher Perspectives On Student Behavior And Aces In Elementary Education, Bridget Mudd Jun 2019

Teacher Perspectives On Student Behavior And Aces In Elementary Education, Bridget Mudd

Education | Master's Theses

Since 1998, substantial evidence has demonstrated rates of prevalence for different types of adverse or potentially traumatizing experiences that can happen during childhood, commonly referred to as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). In response, many studies have demonstrated the benefits of trauma-informed practices in mental health. Despite supporting evidence, policymakers have been slow to implement these practices in schools. Teachers are on the front lines of this issue. They are in a position to be most effective in supporting children and most impacted by student behavior yet their voice is notably absent from the literature. The purpose of this study is …

Dewey’S Political Technology From An Anthropological Perspective, Shane J. Ralston Jun 2019

Dewey’S Political Technology From An Anthropological Perspective, Shane J. Ralston

Education and Culture

This article explores the possibility that John Dewey’s silence about which democratic means are needed to achieve democratic ends, while confusing, makes greater sense if we appreciate the notion of political technology from an anthropological perspective. Michael Eldridge relates the exchange between John Herman Randall, Jr. and Dewey in which Dewey concedes “that I have done little or nothing in this direction [of outlining what constitutes adequate political technology, but that] does not detract from my recognition that in the concrete the invention of such a technology is the heart of the problem of intelligent action in political matters.” Dewey’s …

Nutrient Pollution In Casco Bay, Maine: State Of The Science And Recommendations For Action, Curtis Bohlen Phd, Marti Blair, Victoria Boundy

Publications

The Casco Bay Nutrient Council, a group with wide representation including local and state government, wastewater treatment and stormwater management professionals, researchers, community development organizations, and water quality advocacy organizations, was convened in 2017 to develop recommendations to policymakers, regulators, and funders on how best to assess, understand, convey and reduce the negative impacts of nutrients on Casco Bay.

While in common usage “nutrients” are things that make food nutritious or healthy, nutrients in Casco Bay refers to nitrogen, phosphorus, and silica. These chemical elements boost plant growth in aquatic ecosystems and such effects can lead to negative impact on …

Small RNA (sRNA) population in plants comprises of primarily micro RNAs (miRNAs) and small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). MiRNAs play important roles in plant growth and development. The miRNA-derived secondary siRNAs are usually known as phased siRNAs, including phasiRNAs and tasiRNAs. The miRNA and phased siRNA biogenesis mechanisms are highly conserved in plants. However, their functional conservation and diversification may differ in maize. In the past two decades, lots of miRNAs and phased siRNAs have been functionally identified for curbing important maize agronomic traits, such as those related to developmental timing, plant architecture, sex determination, reproductive development, leaf morphogenesis, root development …

Center for Muscle Biology Faculty Publications

Progressive muscle loss with aging results in decreased physical function, frailty, and impaired metabolic health. Deficits in anabolic signaling contribute to an impaired ability for aged skeletal muscle to adapt in response to exercise and protein feeding. One potential contributing mechanism could be exerted by dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs). Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine if graded protein doses consumed after resistance exercise altered muscle miRNA expression in elderly men. Twenty-three senior men (67.9 ± 0.9 years) performed a bout of resistance exercise and were randomized to consume either a placebo, 20 or 40 g of whey …

Approximation Techniques For Stochastic Analysis Of Biological Systems, Thakur Neupane, Zhen Zhang, Curtis Madsen, Hao Zheng, Chris J. Myers

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

There has been an increasing demand for formal methods in the design process of safety-critical synthetic genetic circuits. Probabilistic model checking techniques have demonstrated significant potential in analyzing the intrinsic probabilistic behaviors of complex genetic circuit designs. However, its inability to scale limits its applicability in practice. This chapter addresses the scalability problem by presenting a state-space approximation method to remove unlikely states resulting in a reduced, finite state representation of the infinite-state continuous-time Markov chain that is amenable to probabilistic model checking. The proposed method is evaluated on a design of a genetic toggle switch. Comparisons with another state-of-the-art …

Interactions Of Polyproline Ii Helix Peptides With Iron(Iii) Oxide, Charles N. Loney, Cheyan Xu, Ashley Graybill, Julie N. Renner

Faculty Scholarship

Interactions of a peptide with polyproline II helical secondary structure with maghemite (iron(III) oxide, Fe2O3) surfaces were characterized using a variety of surface techniques. A quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation was used to measure the hydrated mass and thickness (92 ± 29 ng/cm2 and 0.89 ± 0.27 nm, respectively) of a layer which formed after a sensor coated with Fe2O3 was exposed to the peptide in aqueous solution. The analysis revealed that the peptide formed a stable thin layer on the sensor. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy of the monolayer were employed to study the relationship between the …

Mind The Gap: Experimental Tests To Improve Efficacy Of Fladry For Nonlethal Management Of Coyotes, Julie K. Young, John P. Draper, Stewart Breck

Ecology Center Publications

Coyotes (Canis latrans) are the top predator of livestock in the contiguous United States. Developing more effective nonlethal tools to prevent coyote depredation will facilitate coexistence between livestock producers and coyotes. Fladry is a nonlethal deterrent designed to defend livestock by creating a visual barrier to wolves (C. lupus). Fladry may also be effective with coyotes, but large gap spacing between flags may reduce its efficacy. To address this issue, we performed 2 experiments on captive coyotes using fladry modified to reduce gap spacing at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Predator Research Facility in Millville, Utah, …

The importance of long-distance dispersal (LDD) in shaping geographical distributions has been debated since the nineteenth century. In terrestrial vertebrates, LDD events across large water bodies are considered highly improbable, but organismal traits affecting dispersal capacity are generally not taken into account. Here, we focus on a recent lizard radiation and combine a summary-coalescent species tree based on 1225 exons with a probabilistic model that links dispersal capacity to an evolving trait, to investigate whether ecological specialization has influenced the probability of trans-oceanic dispersal. Cryptoblepharus species that occur …

During chronic liver injury hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), the principal source of extracellular matrix in the fibrotic liver, transdifferentiate into pro-fibrotic myofibroblast-like cells - a process potentially regulated by microRNAs (miRNAs). Recently, we found serum miRNA-25-3p (miR-25) levels were upregulated in children with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) without liver disease, compared to children with CF-associated liver disease and healthy individuals. Here we examine the role of miR-25 in HSC biology. MiR-25 was detected in the human HSC cell line LX-2 and in primary murine HSCs, and increased with culture-induced activation. Transient overexpression of miR-25 inhibited TGF-β and its type 1 receptor …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Caloric restriction (CR) has been shown to extend longevity and protect brain function in aging. However, the effects of CR in young adult mice remain largely unexplored. In addition to the fundamental, long-term changes, recent studies demonstrate that CR has a significant impact on transient, postprandial metabolic flexibility and turnover compared to control groups. The goal of this study was to identify the brain metabolic changes at a transient (2 h) and steady (6 h) postprandial state in young mice (5–6 months of age) fed with CR or ad libitum (AL; free eating). Using metabolomics profiling, we show that CR …

When Punishment Is Emotion-Driven: Children’S, Adolescents’, And Adults’ Costly Punishment Of Unfair Allocations, M Gummerum, B Lopez-Perez, E Van Dijk, Lf Van Dillen Jun 2019

When Punishment Is Emotion-Driven: Children’S, Adolescents’, And Adults’ Costly Punishment Of Unfair Allocations, M Gummerum, B Lopez-Perez, E Van Dijk, Lf Van Dillen

School of Psychology

When do children, adolescents, and adults decide to punish fairness violations? Two studies with 9-year-old children, 13-year-old adolescents, and adults investigated whether the link between unfairness and punishment was mediated by negative emotional reactions (measured through galvanic skin responses and emotion ratings). Study 1 (N = 117) examined this question in the context of second-party punishment, where the punisher is a direct victim of the violation. Study 2 (N = 119) assessed third-party punishment, where the punisher is an observer, unaffected by the violation. In each study, participants were presented with seven distributions of points, which differed in how fairly …

Health Sciences & Kinesiology: Faculty Publications

This study aimed to screen the target miRNAs and to investigate the differential miR-3557/324-targeted signal mechanisms in the rats’ model of Parkinson’s disease (PD) with regular aerobic exercise. Rats were divided into sedentary control PD group (SED-PD, n = 18) and aerobic exercise PD group (EX-PD, n = 22). After 8 weeks of regular aerobic exercise, a 6-hydroxydopamine- (6-OHDA-) induced PD lesion model was constructed. Preregular aerobic exercises enhanced the injury resistance of rats with 6-OHDA-induced PD. The rotational behavior after injection of apomorphine hydrochloride was alleviated. Under the scanning electron microscopy, we found the neurons, axons, and villi of …

Trichinella Pseudospiralis In A Wolverine (Gulo Gulo) From The Canadian North, Rajnish Sharma, Peter Thompson, Brett Elkin, Robert Mulders, Marsha Branigan, Jodie Pongracz, Brent Wagner, Brad Scandrett, Eric Hoberg, Benjamin Rosenthal, Emily Jenkins

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Species of Trichinella are a globally distributed assemblage of nematodes, often with distinct host ranges, which include people, domestic, and wild animals. Trichinella spp. are important in northern Canada, where dietary habits of people and methods of meat preparation (drying, smoking, fermenting as well as raw) increase the risk posed by these foodborne zoonotic parasites. Outbreaks in the arctic and subarctic regions of Canada and the United States are generally attributed to T. nativa (T2) or the T6 genotype, when genetic characterization is performed. We report the discovery of Trichinella pseudospiralis (T4), a non-encapsulated species, in a wolverine (Gulo gulo) …

Predation By Long-Tailed Weasels Mustela Frenata During A Richardson's Ground Squirrel Urocitellus Richardsonii Population Outbreak In Southwestern Saskatchewan, Gilbert Proulx

Western North American Naturalist

Long-tailed weasels (Mustela frenata) are known to feed on mice and voles. However, in the Canadian Prairies, where Richardson’s ground squirrels (Urocitellus richardsonii) are abundant (particularly during drought periods), long-tailed weasel predation on these medium-size rodents is poorly documented. In this study, predation by long-tailed weasels on Richardson’s ground squirrels was documented from April 2008 to September 2008 in southwestern Saskatchewan during a drought period. I found that Richardson’s ground squirrel remains were the dominant food item in percentage of occurrence, volume, and biomass from April to July. In August–September, however, deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus …

First Documented Observation Of Island Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma Insularis) Precopulatory Display, Rebecca G. Cheek, Michelle L. Harris, Anna Kennedy

Western North American Naturalist

We report what we believe is the first documented observation of Island Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma insularis) copulation behavior. We compare our observations to the behaviors of other Aphelocoma jays with the aim of identifying potential species-specific elements. There are observable differences between the precopulatory display of the Island Scrub-Jay and that of more distantly related Aphelocoma jays. The display of Island Scrub-Jay and that of the closely related California Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma californica) are very similar despite the species being isolated from each other for approximately 1 million years.

Introduction: Adolescence is a time of significant physical and emotional change, and there is emerging concern that adolescents living in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) may face substantial challenges in relation to linear growth and mental health. Data on the global burden of stunting after 5 years of age are limited, but estimates suggest up to 50 per cent of all adolescents in some LMIC are stunted. Additionally, many LMIC lack robust mental health care delivery systems. Pakistan has one of the world's largest populations of adolescents (10 to 19 years) at approximately 40 million. The Nash-wo-Numa study's primary objective …
