The Effect Of Racial Confirmation Biases On Whistleblowing Intent, Charlotte M. Jacobson
The Effect Of Racial Confirmation Biases On Whistleblowing Intent, Charlotte M. Jacobson
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Previous research has demonstrated the negative impact of stereotypes on Black individuals in the workplace, including differential employment rates between races, the influence of race on hiring decisions, and the effect of racial discrimination on job satisfaction and turnover. However, the impact of racial stereotypes on employees’ decisions to report a witnessed wrongdoing (i.e., whistleblowing) have not been examined. In this study, I investigated whether racial stereotypes and confirmation biases make an individual more likely to blow the whistle on a Black coworker than a White coworker for the same wrongdoing. I also examined the potential moderating effect of the …

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
This essay explores the apparent differences and similarities between the Black Lives Matter and the #MeToo movements. In April 2019, the Wisconsin Journal of Gender, Law and Society hosted a symposium entitled “Race-Ing Justice, En-Gendering Power: Black Lives Matter and the Role of Intersectional Legal Analysis in the Twenty-First Century.” That program facilitated examination of the historical antecedents, cultural contexts, methods, and goals of these linked equality movements. Conversations continued among the symposium participants long after the end of the official program. In this essay, the symposium’s speakers memorialize their robust conversations and also dive more deeply into the phenomena, …
Transgender And Gender Nonconforming Individuals' Perceptions Of The Criminal Justice System, Delisa Shundra Hamilton
Transgender And Gender Nonconforming Individuals' Perceptions Of The Criminal Justice System, Delisa Shundra Hamilton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study explored the perceptions and lived experiences of 10 transgender and gender nonconforming individuals who had interacted with the various sectors of the criminal justice system (i.e., law enforcement, the prison system, and the court system). The focus of this phenomenological qualitative study was providing insight into how sexual orientation and gender identity influenced transgender and gender nonconforming individuals' experiences and perceptions of the criminal justice system. Procedural justice theory guided this study by providing an understanding of how the behavior of the actors in the criminal justice system shaped the cooperation or resistance of transgender and gender nonconforming …
Police Culture And Perceived Service Value: Officer Perspectives On Psychological Services Utilization, Kymberli Copeland Barker
Police Culture And Perceived Service Value: Officer Perspectives On Psychological Services Utilization, Kymberli Copeland Barker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is a noted discrepancy between police psychological services offered and services utilized. It is important to understand reasons for underutilization when creating services for officers. The purpose of this study was providing empirical evidence from the officers-perspectives to answer this question. The conceptual foundation was officers may refuse participation due to police culture. The conceptual framework was represented in research questions focused on officers- perspectives regarding psychological services provided by psychologists without law enforcement (LE) experience. The participants were employed law enforcement officers (LEOs) from regions across the United States. Officer participation from all 50 states was targeted to …
Demographic And Symptomology Differences Among Sexually Assaulted Children With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Kathleen Bethel-Pracht
Demographic And Symptomology Differences Among Sexually Assaulted Children With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Kathleen Bethel-Pracht
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Trauma due to sexual assault becomes a life changing event during a child's critical developmental years. Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory outlines the process of understanding an individual's environment and how disruptions in one level may affect other levels. This study determined if gender and ethnicity among sexually traumatized children diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) predict symptom severity as measured by the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC) after controlling for the socioeconomic level and home environment. The population consisted of 126 children aged 8 through 16 with at least a second-grade reading level. Multiple regression examined whether male and …
Nature Of Stressors On Female Law Enforcement Academy Recruits, Sandra Patricia Dillard
Nature Of Stressors On Female Law Enforcement Academy Recruits, Sandra Patricia Dillard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A problem in law enforcement academy training is that female recruits endure more stressors than male recruits endure. This can lead to fewer females opting for careers as law enforcement officers. The purpose of this study was to explore the unique stressors on female recruits when they are held to the same standards as males. The feminist theory was used as the theoretical framework for this study to depict how stress is perceived for the female. The first research question examined how outside stressors affected female trainees. The second research question examined how job-related stressors affected female trainees. In-depth, semistructured …
Police Officers' Perceptions Of Spirituality For Managing Occupational Stress And Job Performance, Licole Robinson
Police Officers' Perceptions Of Spirituality For Managing Occupational Stress And Job Performance, Licole Robinson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police officers are exposed to occupational stressors that can negatively affect their job performance. Spirituality has received scholarly attention as a potential therapeutic strategy to assist individuals working under stressful conditions. Research indicated that police culture often overlooks the spiritual well-being of police officers. Much of the police literature on stress and spirituality has been examined using quantitative methods of inquiry. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore police officers' perceptions regarding the use of spirituality to manage occupational stress and job performance. Fry's spiritual leadership theory provided the framework for the study. Semistructured interviews with a …
Female Victims' Perceptions Of Civil Protection Order Effectiveness In Rural Tennessee, Thomas Warren Tharpe
Female Victims' Perceptions Of Civil Protection Order Effectiveness In Rural Tennessee, Thomas Warren Tharpe
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Domestic violence is a serious social issue that affects victims across all spectrums of life. While domestic violence crosses all geographical boundaries, researchers have found that women residing in rural areas experience increased severity and more extended periods of abuse than their urban counterparts. Existing literature focusing on rural female domestic violence victims and their subjective perceptions of civil order protection is limited and little is known about abuse victims' satisfaction with civil protection orders in keeping them safe from future incidents of violence. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the effectiveness perceptions of rural female victims …
The Lived Experiences Of Male Victims Of Intimate Partner Violence, Arielle Chieko Woodyard
The Lived Experiences Of Male Victims Of Intimate Partner Violence, Arielle Chieko Woodyard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of male victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). Few studies exist about the experiences of men who are victims of female-perpetrated IPV and there are not many studies about these men's experiences in seeking and receiving psychological help. Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Peck's gender role strain paradigm guided this study to understand victimology and perceptions of gender roles. Research questions attempted to understand the lived experiences of male IPV victims of female-perpetrated IPV, accessing supportive and psychological services, and their experiences of these services. Seven male individuals were recruited through flyers in …
Organizational Forms For Community Collaboration To Confront Homelessness, Suzanne Smith
Organizational Forms For Community Collaboration To Confront Homelessness, Suzanne Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Homelessness is a complex social problem that touches many different sectors of a community--not only housing, but also healthcare, education, criminal justice, workforce, and more. Because of these complex interrelationships, homelessness as a social problem lends itself to collaborative governance where service providers across sectors come together to address the problem. This research examines homeless service provision as an example of how local government, nonprofit organizations, community funders, and other stakeholders collaborate and what knits those networks together. This research project encompasses three major efforts: a comparative case study of six different communities and how they have organized to confront …
Ending Sexualized Violence: International Jurisprudence, Nicole Greenberg
Ending Sexualized Violence: International Jurisprudence, Nicole Greenberg
Scripps Senior Theses
Sexualized violence continues to threaten the autonomy of individuals and violate human rights. Scholars debate the effectiveness of international treaties in addressing this problem. The Convention on Elimination and Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) of 1979 requires ratifying countries to uplift equality and denounce discrimination of women nationally, in public and private spheres. Examining Bosnia and Herzegovina as a case study shows the effectiveness CEDAW has in creating political and social change. In addition, the Bosnian War illustrates the threat sexualized violence has on individual autonomy. Findings show that CEDAW and grassroots feminist activism are successful together in advocating for social …
Comparisons Of The Soul: A Foucauldian Analysis Of Reasonable Doubt, Jeri Mallory
Comparisons Of The Soul: A Foucauldian Analysis Of Reasonable Doubt, Jeri Mallory
Scripps Senior Theses
The purpose of this paper is to uncover a new level of thinking regarding the discourse and debate around the standard of reasonable doubt and how it is used in our court rooms. The current argument surrounding the reasonable doubt standard has become circular and reached an impasse. By introducing the lens of social control and using the writings of notable French philosopher Michel Foucault, this paper looks at the origins and development of the reasonable doubt standard and links it with the increasing methods of social control present in punishment as well as evaluating the cultural narrative around its …

What I think I’d like to do is tell three stories of three things that did happen in international criminal justice over the past year, and use my time as a vehicle and doorway to think about law and also how law fits in life. One of the themes that I want to evoke through these stories is what I felt is an important vibe in international criminal law enforcement this past year. And it’s the theme of time and age and coming of age.

Factors Affecting Juvenile Drug Use In Medellín, Colombia, Kendall Miller
Factors Affecting Juvenile Drug Use In Medellín, Colombia, Kendall Miller
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Evidence shows that peer pressure is a strong indicator of juvenile substance use. Oetting and Beauvais (1986) determined that the Peer Cluster Theory was a common phenomenon in which adolescents tend to share the same opinions on substance use as their friends do, namely that juveniles who had friends that abused substances were likely to abuse substances themselves. The present study sought to determine if this phenomenon was true for adolescents in Medellín, Columbia. Data was collected on participants’ demographics, their opinions of their community, their relationship to their families and friends, how they spend their time each week, and …

Incorporating Collateral Consequences Into Criminal Procedure, Paul T. Crane
Incorporating Collateral Consequences Into Criminal Procedure, Paul T. Crane
Law Faculty Publications
A curious relationship currently exists between collateral consequences and criminal procedures. It is now widely accepted that collateral consequences are an integral component of the American criminal justice system. Such consequences shape the contours of many criminal cases, influencing what charges are brought by the government, the content of plea negotiations, the sentences imposed by trial judges, and the impact of criminal convictions on defendants. Yet, when it comes to the allocation of criminal procedures, collateral consequences continue to be treated as if they are external to the criminal justice process. Specifically, a conviction’s collateral consequences, no matter how severe, …

System Accountability And Sexual Assault: The Past And Future Of The Criminal Justice System, Alta Viscomi
Law Student Publications
The #MeToo Movement and the rise in the public consciousness of the impact of sexual violence has made abundantly clear that the legal rape reform movement that began in the 1970s was largely unsuccessful in stemming the tide of sexual violence. That movement was directed at the procedures in criminal justice system that make rape prosecutions easier for the state, but it failed to address the state’s role in enabling and perpetuating sexual violence. By failing to address those issues and by actively turning to carceral feminism, the state implemented a system in which sexual violence reporting remains low while …
To The Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse- Whenever You’Re Ready: Eliminating The Criminal Statute Of Limitations On Childhood Sexual Assault Crimes In Light Of Pennsylvania’S Catholic Dioceses Grand Jury Investigation, Rebecca Schultz
Law Student Publications
It is exceptionally difficult for many survivors of sexual assault to come forward to tell their story. This is particularly the case where the perpetrator is someone in a position of power who the survivor trusted. The statute of limitations for cases of childhood sexual abuse can serve as another barrier preventing survivors from coming forward because it prevents any semblance of justice for those individuals. This is currently most evident in states like Pennsylvania that still impose a statute of limitations on crimes of sexually assaulting children. Pennsylvania is reeling from its most recent Catholic clergy sex abuse scandal, …

"After deciding to end the relationship, Tina carefully broke all ties with her ex-boyfriend. Then, the first blog post went live. The post was in Tina’s name, discussing her background as a business school graduate who worked in commodities at a bank and then transferred to real estate. The post took a dark turn as it went on to describe Tina as an escort and provided her phone number and address. As more blog posts went live, more people began harassing Tina by looking for an escort. Despite such harassment, Tina was looking for a new job. She received a …

Jury Sentencing In The United States: The Antithesis Of The Rule Of Law, Maryann Grover
Law Student Publications
"In his dissent in Glossip v. Gross, Justice Breyer declared that “[t]he arbitrary imposition of punishment is the antithesis of the rule of law.” He went on to assert that, for a defendant, to be sentenced to death was akin to being struck by lightning. Such randomness and arbitrariness in capital sentencing results from the wide discretion granted to sentencing actors, and runs counter to the firmly held belief that every defendant in the criminal justice system deserves fair and just treatment." Racial And Gender Differences In The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experience And Chronic Health Conditions In Adulthood, Jalal Uddin
All ETDs from UAB
A growing body of studies highlights that many adult diseases and health disparities in late-life are rooted in childhood adversities. However, there is little research that examines how social stratification processes structure the inequality in early-life stress exposure, and the effects of stress exposure on health outcomes may vary based on the intersections of social stratification categories. Drawing on an integrated framework of the life course stress process and intersectionality theory, this study examines the patterns in childhood adverse experiences (ACEs) by race/ethnicity and gender and how race/ethnicity, gender, and adult socioeconomic status (SES) combine to modify the effects of …

Transition Into Adulthood: Cannabis Use And Mental Health, Katie Mcintyre
All ETDs from UAB
The US is currently experiencing sweeping changes in the legal status of cannabis, the most common illicit drug used in America. Due to its classification as a Schedule I substance we know very little about how cannabis use impacts mental health since illicit drugs are not legally allowed to be researched in a laboratory setting. The current research on cannabis use (CU) and mental health (MH) is expansive and conflicting. One side of the debate suggests CU in adolescence has a direct effect on MH, the other side suggests CU could be an indirect coping mechanism of poor MH. One …
Zero Tolerance And Self Image: A Systematic Literature Review, Caitlyn Todd
Zero Tolerance And Self Image: A Systematic Literature Review, Caitlyn Todd
Master's Theses
The use of zero tolerance disciplinary policies in schools have numerous, lasting impacts on children, particularly African American students. This study relies on the use of a systematic literature review to analyze prior data on what these effects are. The study found that the effects include, but are not limited to, destruction of self confidence, increased recidivism, and lastly further psychological issues, all of which contribute to the likelihood of having a poor self image. These findings play are role in the discussion of other, more equitable, styles of discipline, such as restorative justice, as a way to help remedy …
