Developing A Health Equity And Criminal Justice Concentration For A Master Of Public Health (Mph) Program: Results From A Needs Assessment Among Community Partners And Potential Employers, Alexandra L. Hernandez, Mathew Green, Nemesia Kelly, Carly Strouse, Trina Mackie, Gayle Cummings, Elena O. Lingas

The United States has experienced a 4-fold increase in jail and prison populations over the last 40 years, disproportionately burdening African American and Hispanic/Latinx communities. Mass incarceration threatens the health of individuals, families, and communities, and requires a public health response. The Master of Public Health (MPH) Program at Touro University California (TUC) trains students to become skillful, socially-conscious public health professionals. We are developing a concentration focused on the public health impacts of incarceration. Along with the core public health curriculum, students of this new "Health Equity and Criminal Justice (HECJ)" concentration will receive training in criminal justice, reentry, …

The Third Design Space: A Postcolonial Perspective On Corporate Engagement With Open Source Software Communities, Kenneth E. Kendall, Julie E. Kendall, Matt Germonprez, Lars Mathiassen

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications

Corporations increasingly engage with open source software communities in the co‐creation of software. This collaboration between corporate professionals and open source software community members is strikingly different from the early days of software development where for‐profit firms attempted to dominate and control the industry while attempting to throttle the success of independent developers offering an alternative, open source option. While many metaphors like trading zones, common pool resources and ecosystems have helped understand the phenomenon, the metaphors do not portray what the industry was like before and after the transition. We adopt a postcolonial metaphor as an analytical lens to …

Attorney-Client Communication In Public Defense: A Qualitative Examination, Janet Moore, Vicki L. Plano Clark, Lori A. Foote, Jacinda K. Dariotis Jan 2019

Attorney-Client Communication In Public Defense: A Qualitative Examination, Janet Moore, Vicki L. Plano Clark, Lori A. Foote, Jacinda K. Dariotis

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

This article presents a qualitative research approach to exploring attorney-client communication in an urban public defense system. The study drew upon procedural justice theory [PJT], which emphasizes relationships between satisfaction with system procedures and compliance with system demands. Interpretive analysis of interview data from 22 public defense clients revealed four major themes. PJT accounted well for three themes of communication time, type, and content, highlighting relationships between prompt, iterative, complete communication and client satisfaction. The fourth theme involved clients exercising agency, often due to dissatisfaction with attorney communication. This theme was better accommodated by legal consciousness theory, which emphasizes that …

High Time For Change: The Development Of Marijuana Laws In The United States And The Future Of Florida, Mary Kathryn Stevens Jan 2019

High Time For Change: The Development Of Marijuana Laws In The United States And The Future Of Florida, Mary Kathryn Stevens

Theses & ETDs

Marijuana legalization in the United States has taken many different forms over the last one hundred and six years as different policy makers have crafted different laws. Throughout the time of marijuana prohibition state governments and the federal government have learned from one another how to best craft policy that would meet their perceived needs. Much of the last century has been spent creating punitive drug policy that has led to mass incarceration of mostly people of color in the United States. The effects of the drug policy that has been created here have been felt across the globe. During …

The Story Of Lies: Preparation Effects And Prosocial Deception, Renbourn Chock Jan 2019

The Story Of Lies: Preparation Effects And Prosocial Deception, Renbourn Chock

Theses & ETDs

Lies are stories that are told in order to deceive their target, but as stories they must be prepared beforehand. If prepared stories can be distinguished from unprepared stories, it may be possible to distinguish certain lies from truths. In a novel study design, 30 undergraduate participants told one self-serving lie, one unprepared truth, and one prosocial lie. These stories were analyzed for evidence of preparation. The preparation effects measured were ending type and inclusion of additional details. Participants were also asked to report the amount of time spent preparing their lies. Results suggested that people spend more time preparing …

Examining Victim Blaming: An Analysis Of The Sexual Objectification Of Women In Media, Self-Objectification, And Rape Myth Acceptance, Nina Schmidt

Theses & ETDs

This study examines the relationships between sexual objectification, self-objectification, rape myth acceptance, and victim blaming. Participants first completed a self-objectification and rape myth acceptance questionnaire and engaged in a short cognitive task to mitigate priming effects. They were then shown either sexualized images (experimental condition) or neutral images (control condition), read a vignette depicting a sexual assault, and answered questions to assess their victim blaming score. Contrary to previous literature, sexual objectification did not affect victim blaming. Additionally, self-objectification was not related to victim blaming, but rape myth acceptance was strongly, positively related to victim blaming such that higher rape …

Psychopathy And Head Injury: A Correlational Study Between Mild Traumatic Brain Injury And Psychopathic Traits, Eryn Mcintyre Jan 2019

Psychopathy And Head Injury: A Correlational Study Between Mild Traumatic Brain Injury And Psychopathic Traits, Eryn Mcintyre

Theses & ETDs

Psychologists and physicians have observed drastic changes in personality after significant head injuries. Psychopathy, when defined as a disorder distinct from antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), differs from the DSM criteria for ASPD through additional personality deficit criteria. This study sought to examine the potential relationship between mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and both primary and secondary psychopathic traits. It was hypothesized that (a) there would be a correlation between mTBI and psychopathic traits and that (b) the greater the number of head injuries, the more one would display psychopathic traits. The study consisted of undergraduate students who completed the Levenson …

A Pilot Study Of The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma Among Prisoners And The Types Of Crimes Committed By Those Prisoners, Kathleen M. Schaefer

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of the study is to examine the stories of childhood trauma of prisoners, the relationship between childhood traumas among prisoners, and the types of crimes committed by those prisoners as adults. Semi-structured interview data and field notes were collected from 24 post-conviction adult felony offenders between the ages of 18 and 65 who experienced at least one type of childhood trauma. The data were analyzed using Rosenthal and Fischer-Rosenthal’s (2004) analysis of narrative data.

The analysis revealed that the severity of childhood trauma may be linked with aggressive behavior, which may result in criminal activity such as crimes …

The Effects Of Work-Integrated Learning On Undergraduate Sports Coaching Students’ Perceived Self-Efficacy, Anthony Weldon, Jake K. Ngo Jan 2019

The Effects Of Work-Integrated Learning On Undergraduate Sports Coaching Students’ Perceived Self-Efficacy, Anthony Weldon, Jake K. Ngo

Faculty of Management & Hospitality (THEi)

This study examined the effects of a work-integrated learning (WIL) placement on student's self-efficacy and perceived workplace skill levels. Twenty-eight participants volunteered for this study, in which 15 completed WIL and 13 did not (non-WIL). The Work Self-Efficacy Inventory (WS-Ei) and Workplace Skills Questionnaire (WSQ) were used to collect student responses. Differences between groups were analyzed using a Mann-Whitney U test, mean differences were shown, and statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results from the WS-Ei indicated the WIL group shown significantly higher total WS-Ei scores, higher mean scores for all dimensions measured, and significantly higher scores for individual dimensions; problem-solving, politics, pressure and role expectations. The WSQ indicated the WIL group had higher mean scores for all perceived workplace skills, except for information technology, and no significant differences was observed between groups. Areas showing little difference between groups can be highlighted for further support and development.

Plea Bargaining: The Influence Of Counsel, Kelsey S. Henderson, Lora M. Levett Jan 2019

Plea Bargaining: The Influence Of Counsel, Kelsey S. Henderson, Lora M. Levett

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

For the criminal defendant, his attorney acts as his loyal and zealous advocate before the court (American Bar Association, 2015), and due process protections of the U.S. adversarial system have afforded this relationship special privilege. In this chapter, we explore the influence and role of the attorney in plea decision making. We first explore the legal context of the attorney’s role in plea bargaining, reviewing several cases that address a defendant’s right to effective assistance of counsel. We then review the shadow of trial theory and other theoretical perspectives as they relate to the attorney’s role in the plea-bargaining process, …

The Effect Of Family And Social Support On Suicidal Ideation In Jails, Megan L. Small Jan 2019

The Effect Of Family And Social Support On Suicidal Ideation In Jails, Megan L. Small

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Suicidal ideation and associated behaviors are up to four times more common among jail inmates than the general community (Jenkins et al., 2005; Hayes, 1986). Research finds a variety of social, biological, and psychological factors interact to influence suicidal thoughts of incarcerated individuals (Bonner, 1992; Borrill et al., 2005). Particularly, psychological distress such as, depression and feelings of hopelessness, along with loss of social support and decreased feelings of connectedness have been linked to suicidal ideation and behaviors (Moscicki, 1997; Hawton & van Heeringen, 2009). Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017) has emphasized the importance of connectedness …
