Increasing Hepatitis C Infection Related To Growing Opioid Epidemic, Chelsea Poell, Barbara Mcclaskey Apr 2019

Increasing Hepatitis C Infection Related To Growing Opioid Epidemic, Chelsea Poell, Barbara Mcclaskey

Posters

Hepatitis C (HCV) is rapidly growing and has become the most common blood-borne infection throughout the United States. The objective of this study was to compare trends in rates of injection drug use (IDU), specifically opioid injection, with national trends in the incidence of acute HCV infection to assess whether these events correlated over time. The methodology was a literature review. To test for trends researchers calculated the annual incidence rate, demographics, and risk characteristics of reported cases of acute HCV infection using surveillance data from 2004 to 2014. They also analyzed the annual percentage of admissions to substance use …

It’S Not Funny: A Discourse Analysis Of Sexism In Stand-Up, Greer Snyder Apr 2019

It’S Not Funny: A Discourse Analysis Of Sexism In Stand-Up, Greer Snyder

Senior Theses - Anthropology

In this thesis, I will be doing a discourse analysis of two stand-up comedians over the course of their careers as comedians, these two being men who have been confirmed to have, or convicted for, committing acts of violence and sexual assault against multiple women. I ask: What can we learn about the relationship between violent acts and language through an examination of the speech of these two men? I chose stand-up comedy as my ‘field’ for researching violence because it is a unique platform that often reflects social norms and ideals, acting as a sort of mirror, and acts …

The Effect Of Knowledge On Attitudes Towards The Us Supreme Court, Harlee Havens Apr 2019

The Effect Of Knowledge On Attitudes Towards The Us Supreme Court, Harlee Havens

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Knowledge regarding the judicial branch of the federal government, including the Supreme Court, is lacking in comparison to the two other branches. The Supreme Court generally receives better approval ratings than the executive and legislative branches of government. It is this relationship that I examine through a survey that measures knowledge and feelings of all three branches of government to assess if having more knowledge of the judicial branch has an impact on one’s feelings towards it. By measuring the knowledge of my respondents through a questionnaire that asked about information regarding, and functions of the US Supreme Court, I …

The Influence Of Mental Illness On The Perception Of Guilt, Sydney Garrison Apr 2019

The Influence Of Mental Illness On The Perception Of Guilt, Sydney Garrison

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate how the presence of a mental disorder in a person accused of a crime affects an individual’s perception of the accused person’s guilt. Participants were randomly assigned a vignette used in a study by Skeem & Goulding (2001), describing a crime that has been committed; one condition included the presence of an unnamed mental illness and the other condition did not. Immediately after reading the vignette participants completed a survey that included a question regarding the perceived guilt of the person accused of the crime. The answers to this question were compared …

Incapacitating Criminal Corporations, W. Robert Thomas Apr 2019

Incapacitating Criminal Corporations, W. Robert Thomas

Vanderbilt Law Review

If there is any consensus in the fractious debates over corporate punishment, it is this: a corporation cannot be imprisoned, incarcerated, jailed, or otherwise locked up. Whatever fiction the criminal law entertains about corporate personhood, having a physical "body to kick"-and, by extension, a body to throw into prison-is not one of them. The ambition of this project is not to reject this obvious point but rather to challenge the less-obvious claim it has come to represent: incapacitation, despite long being a textbook justification for punishing individuals, does not bear on the criminal law of corporations.

This Article argues that …

From Education To Incarceration: A Study Of School Process Affecting Disproportionate Minority Contact Within Hardin County’S Juvenile Justice System, Krystal Carver-Dickens

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study seeks to understand how school processes affect disproportionate minority contact within the Hardin County Juvenile Justice System. A study completed by Lovell and Drummond (2016) in conjunction with the Hardin County BRIDGES Council, is used as the foundation for the current research. The original research, along with several others, examined disproportionate minority contact (DMC) after the student had been referred from their respective schools to the juvenile court system. The current study investigates 858 juvenile court records, with permission of the Hardin County Juvenile Judges, and examines school information included in the court records related to the student …

Merrimack College Campus Community Policing Program, Gregory Pepper Apr 2019

Merrimack College Campus Community Policing Program, Gregory Pepper

Political Science Student Work

This concept defines the police as partners with the community where the community becomes active in problem solving and taking an active role in preserving the safety and quality of life in their neighborhoods. In this concept the patrol officer initiates and takes an active role in the community they patrol, and becomes a pivotal member in the area they are assigned to in the facilitation in problem solving. (Jahangeer 2017). The police and community partnerships that are formed assist in the trust building process. The development of a community policing unit would require the effort of the entire agency, …

Socioeconomic And Demographic Correlates Of Sex Offender Residency In Massachusetts, Margaret Chiavelli Apr 2019

Socioeconomic And Demographic Correlates Of Sex Offender Residency In Massachusetts, Margaret Chiavelli

Criminology Student Work

In states with sex offender residency restrictions, sex offenders have been found to cluster in areas that are poorer, less white, and generally less advantaged, but little research has been done on whether these patterns exist without residency restrictions in place (Tewksbury & Mustaine, 2008). All cities and towns in the state of Massachusetts eliminated residency restrictions for sex offenders in 2015 by way of court order. This policy shift provides a unique opportunity to study sex offender residency patterns that are not constrained to certain geographic areas. Using publicly available data, multivariate regression was used to examine correlates of …

Breaking The Cycle Of Intergenerational Crime: Theoretical Analysis And Intervention Program Recommendations, Katelyn Murphy Apr 2019

Breaking The Cycle Of Intergenerational Crime: Theoretical Analysis And Intervention Program Recommendations, Katelyn Murphy

Criminology Student Work

With approximately 2.3 million individuals incarcerated in the United States, important questions arise about the consequences of mass incarceration. Of particular concern is the impact on juveniles with one or both parents incarcerated, who are an especially disadvantaged group in society. They face unique challenges because of their parent's incarceration, and research documents this resulting in problems with health, education, and criminal behavior. The literature on intergenerational crime emphasizes the statistically significant rates of children following in their parent's footsteps of criminal behavior, with parental incarceration being an important risk factor. The purpose of my research is to explain the …

Prisons In The United States: A Need For Reform And Educational Rehabilitation, Amanda Alcox Apr 2019

Prisons In The United States: A Need For Reform And Educational Rehabilitation, Amanda Alcox

Social Justice Student Work

The American criminal justice system holds almost 2.3 million people in 1,719 state prisons, 102 federal prisons, 1,852 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,163 local jails, and 80 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, immigration detention facilities, civil commitment centers, state psychiatric hospitals, and prisons in the U.S. territories. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Ex-convicts express that transitioning back into society, as well as finding employers willing to hire former inmates, is a difficult task. In this capstone, we will look at prison reform from the 1800s-to-today, we will determine which roles retributive …

Women & Adhd Functional Impairments: Beyond The Obvious, Noelle Marita Lynn Apr 2019

Women & Adhd Functional Impairments: Beyond The Obvious, Noelle Marita Lynn

Masters Theses

Women with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are an understudied and underserved population. Research on women with ADHD has shown that they are significantly impaired by ADHD and its functional impairments. It also shows that women often internalize their symptoms and impairments. However, no research was found that explores what this internalization does to the women. The researcher chose to begin to address this gap in the literature through this qualitative phenomenological study. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of functional impairments caused by ADHD on the internal lived experiences of women.

The researcher conducted fourteen interviews …

Connecting The Dots For Missing And Runaway Children, Tayla Moore Apr 2019

Connecting The Dots For Missing And Runaway Children, Tayla Moore

Criminology Student Work

With the general public’s help, the amount of time a youth is missing may lessen greatly. Bringing a youth home as soon as possible would decrease the chances of a youth encountering danger or traumatic events which could lead to emotional and mental struggles in their future. Moreover, focusing on America’s ability to rehabilitate youth who have run away and become subject to trauma is very important to creating safer communities; runaway or traumatized youth are at greater risk of chronic criminal involvement, so reducing this trauma may decrease mass incarceration and/or recidivism rates throughout the United States of America. …

Reshaping Minds Using An Occupational Based Approach, Marisha Griffin Apr 2019

Reshaping Minds Using An Occupational Based Approach, Marisha Griffin

MOT Student Capstones

Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transfer, transporting, and receipt of a person using force or manipulation. Sex trafficking refers to engagement in sexual activity against one's will followed by a lifestyle of physical and mental abuse. There are numerous social determinants that impact the health and wellbeing of youth. Due to a lack of community awareness regarding the risk factors associated with human trafficking, vulnerable youth are submissive to occupational injustice activities. The aim of this qualitative study is to educate Present Age Ministries (PAM) on the role and effectiveness of occupational therapy (OT) to gain approval …

A Case Study Of A Jail Participating In An Animal-Assisted Crisis Response Program, Erica Schlau Apr 2019

A Case Study Of A Jail Participating In An Animal-Assisted Crisis Response Program, Erica Schlau

Dissertations

A crisis state is often the result of being admitted to jail, due to the catastrophic impact incarceration can have on personal and professional lives. Unlike other studies, the present study focuses on inmates in jail rather than in prison. To address jail inmates in a crisis state, the current best practice is suicide prevention, which does not effectively consider the needs of jail inmates. Recently emerging in the literature is the use of animal-assisted crisis response (AACR) to serve individuals experiencing a crisis. There is a lack of research on the use of animal-assisted interventions (AAI) with the population …

Decoupling Trauma And Criminal Behavior Through Restorative Reentry Programs And Their Cosas, Florence S. Mahoney Apr 2019

Decoupling Trauma And Criminal Behavior Through Restorative Reentry Programs And Their Cosas, Florence S. Mahoney

Capstone Collection

There are high rates of childhood interpersonal trauma, or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), in criminal offender populations. Childhood trauma is associated with adult mental illness, drug addiction, and crime. This paper explores the following questions: 1) How does childhood interpersonal trauma lead to adult conflict and crime? 2) How can restorative reentry programs for former prisoners best address offenders’ trauma-related behavior and thus reduce conflict? Research was conducted through a review of literature, and findings were substantiated through personal experience working with clients of the Hartford Community Restorative Justice Center Reentry Program in White River Junction, Vermont.

This paper demonstrates …
