How Exemplary Rural Superintendents Build Trust With And Between School Board Members, Edwin Cora
How Exemplary Rural Superintendents Build Trust With And Between School Board Members, Edwin Cora
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed-methods study was to identify and describe what strategies exemplary rural superintendents perceive as most important to build trust with school board members using the five domains of competence, consistency, concern, candor, and connection.
Methodology: This explanatory sequential mixed-methods case study combined both quantitative and qualitative approaches, also known as an explanatory sequential mixed-methods study. Numerical data (quantitative), through use of a survey, were used to provide the researcher a broad perspective on how exemplary superintendents build trust with and between school board members. Also, narrative data (qualitative), in the form of select …
The Association Between Sex Ratio And Domestic Violence Against Women In New York State, Zoey Bevington
The Association Between Sex Ratio And Domestic Violence Against Women In New York State, Zoey Bevington
2019 Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Conference
Domestic violence against women is a serious public health issue. Every year approximately ten million people face violence at the hands of a current or former intimate partner, with 85% of incidences being perpetrated against women. 72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner, and 94% of the time, the victim is a woman. This study examined the association between sex ratio (the number of men to the number of women in a county) and rates of domestic violence committed against women in New York State.
Two conflicting theoretical predictions have been proposed: 1) when there are more males in …

Equal Dignity And Unequal Protection: A Framework For Analyzing Disparate Impact Claims, Kyle P. Nodes
Equal Dignity And Unequal Protection: A Framework For Analyzing Disparate Impact Claims, Kyle P. Nodes
Duke Law Journal Online
The Supreme Court has long endorsed the theory of the “colorblind” Equal Protection Clause, viewing it as a mandate of only facial equality. Due to rigid doctrine that limits true protection to only a short, stagnant list of fundamental rights and suspect classifications and that requires proof of discriminatory intent, only the most blatant, purposeful inequality is within constitutional reach. Festering outside of this doctrinal sphere are powerful examples of state actions that impose disparate impacts on marginalized communities, such as the nationwide system of laws that disqualify individuals—disproportionately black men—with felony convictions from the jury pool.
However, the door …

Pbis Social Culture In An Alternative Education Setting: What Do Students Know About Their Language, Experiences, And Values?, Maria P. Kreiter
Pbis Social Culture In An Alternative Education Setting: What Do Students Know About Their Language, Experiences, And Values?, Maria P. Kreiter
Graduate Theses & Dissertations
School discipline and safety has been an ongoing concern in the United States, as well as statistics about the students that are affected by these concerns. Extreme programming such as zero tolerance has created a pathway for students with safety concerns and disruptive behaviors toward alternative education programs. Unfortunately, simply removing students from public schools has not extinguished the undesired behaviors, but may actually increase more severe and frequent discipline problems, as well as restricted these students from needed and accessible programs. While PBIS in Alternative Education (AE) settings has encouraging outcomes, little research is available in these settings where …
Why Rape Should Be A Federal Crime, Donald A. Dripps
Why Rape Should Be A Federal Crime, Donald A. Dripps
William & Mary Law Review
Sexual assault remains at high levels despite decades of legal reforms. The recent wave of accusations against public figures signals both the persistence of the problem and a new political climate for addressing it. The Article argues that Congress should make forcible rape a federal crime, to the limits of the Commerce Clause. This would bring federal assets to the fight against rape by redirecting them from enforcement of possessory crimes. The simple statutory proposal might be accompanied by a more ambitious reorganization of the Justice Department to include a Bureau of Violent Crimes. Replies are offered to objections based …
The Haves Of Procedure, Ion Meyn
The Haves Of Procedure, Ion Meyn
William & Mary Law Review
In litigation, “haves” and “have-nots” battle over what procedures should govern. Yet, much greater hostilities have been avoided—a war between the “haves” themselves. “Criminal haves” (prosecutors) and “civil haves” (institutional players) litigate in separate territories and under different sets of rules. This is good, for them, because they have incompatible objectives. This Article contends that protecting the “haves” from each other has profoundly influenced the development of procedure in the United States.
The “haves” reap significant benefits in being insulated from each other as they seek rules responsive to their unique preferences. A “criminal have” seeks easy access to the …

Whistleblowing In The Irish Military: The Cost Of Exposing Bullying And Sexual Harassment, John Hogan, Sharon Feeney, Grace Flynn
Articles
Whistleblowing has gained increasing media attention over the past 40 years, as incidents of abuse and wrongdoing associated with businesses, religious institutions, the media and politics have come to light. In this article, we investigate the consequences of a military whistleblower’s actions for both himself and the military institution that he was a part of. The case concerns former army officer Dr. Tom Clonan and his findings concerning the bullying and sexual harassment of female personnel in the Irish Defence Forces at the turn of the century. As these revelations came to light over 17 years ago we are able …
Perspectives Of Behavioral Health Providers In School Based Health Clinics (Sbhc) About Behavioral Health Services And Low-Income Adolescent Males’ Academic Achievement, Suzanne Gagnon
Nursing ETDs
ABSTRACT
Low-income adolescent males are subject to both health and educational inequities. Male adolescents are the least likely of all pediatric age and gender groups to access either primary care or behavioral health services. This same population is most likely to not complete high school or college. Health and educational outcomes are both affected by social determinants. School-based Health Centers (SBHCs) are known for providing access to primary care and behavioral health services for low-income and vulnerable populations. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to identify themes from one-on-one semi-structured qualitative interviews with behavioral health providers, who provide …

A total of 142 participants from three southern California prisons completed the survey items to yield results. Research Questions 1 and 2 included descriptive statistics to determine the leaders’ self-perceived leadership …
Effective Practices To Facilitate Rural Reentry: A Policy Analysis, Alyssa P. Gretak, Jill D. Stinson
Effective Practices To Facilitate Rural Reentry: A Policy Analysis, Alyssa P. Gretak, Jill D. Stinson
Appalachian Student Research Forum
The United States is home to a large percentage of incarcerated individuals, a majority of whom re-offend upon release. Reentry efforts focus on lowering recidivism through policy and programming to help returning citizens successfully reintegrate into society and become productive, law abiding citizens. Although research on reentry has increased, the primary focus has been on urban reentry programming. Thus, the unique challenges that plague rural reentry, such as rural employment, housing, treatment and healthcare, transportation, and cultural qualities have been largely neglected. The current policy analysis used the rational model of policy analysis in which information on existing policy and …

“I Never Thought I Could Accomplish Something Like This”: The Success And Struggle Of Teaching College Courses In Jail, Brittnie L. Aiello, Emma Duffy-Comparone
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
In this article, we discuss the challenges and potential benefits of teaching in the “revolving-door” of the criminal justice system: county jails. Massachusetts jails hold pre-trial offenders as well as those serving sentences of up to 2.5 years. Over four semesters, we have learned that flexibility and creativity are necessary to navigate the challenges this heterogeneous population presents, not the least of which is a class in constant flux. In spite of many challenges of teaching in a jail, the classes we teach give students a recovered or newfound belief in their own self-worth and ability, opportunities for intellectual engagement, …

Gwu’S Dr. Casey Delehanty Co-Authors Study On Prevalence Of Torture In U.S. Movies, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Since America was attacked by terrorists on 9/11, the use of torture for counterterrorism tactics has become a highly-debated issue. Approximately half of adults in the United States believe torture is effective in stopping a terrorist threat, said Dr. Casey Delehanty, assistant professor of political science at Gardner-Webb University. However, many interrogation professionals disagree and maintain that torture is often counterproductive.

Batman’S Animated Brain(S): Paper Presented To The Batman In Popular Culture Conference, Lisa Kort-Butler
Department of Sociology: Presentations
I was in the beginning stages of a project on the social story of the brain (and a neuroscience more broadly), when a Google image search brought me a purchasable phrenology of Batman, then a Batman-themed Heart and Brain cartoon of the Brain choosing the cape-and-cowl.1 A quick search of “Batman brain” yielded something interesting: various pieces on the psychology of Batman (e.g., Langley 2012), Zehr’s (2008) work on Bruce Wayne’s training plans and injuries, the science fictions of Batman comics in the post-World War II era (Barr 2008; e.g., Detective Comics, Vol. 1, No. 210, 1954), going back to …
Socioeconomic Influences Of Property Crime Rates: A Study In Virginia’S Counties, Mary Passley
Socioeconomic Influences Of Property Crime Rates: A Study In Virginia’S Counties, Mary Passley
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Most research on factors and causes of crime, whether property or violent crime, focuses on individuals’ behavior or their surrounding environment. In this research, I explore the idea of socioeconomic factors correlated to property crime. I conducted a retrospective design to fully explore United States Census data and crime data gathered by the Bureau of Justice Statistics to discover statistically significant variables connected to property crime. Significant findings were shown by average people per house and retail sales per capita in all counties. Additional significant findings were percent employment change and percent with high school degree or higher in low …

Gangsta Rap As Political And Rhetorical Discourse, Emma Van Drie
Gangsta Rap As Political And Rhetorical Discourse, Emma Van Drie
Celebration of Research
The mid 1980s through the 1990s, during the War on Crime Era, was marked by radicalized fear regarding the observed threat of criminality to society. Politicians voiced their intentions to crack down on crime, and a close association of young African American men in low-income areas with criminality became widespread. During this period when anti-crime rhetoric, arguably manifesting as racism, permeated American media and culture, gangsta rap surfaced in predominately African American, urban neighborhoods throughout the U.S.
Gangsta rap played an essential and highly complex role in shaping political rhetorical discourse surrounding the criminal justice system in the mid 1980s …

What Makes A Good Student?, James Warren, Jennifer S. Feenstra Dr., Sydney Batz, Jordanna Kruse
Celebration of Research
Abstract
Academic achievement in college students has been predicted in previous studies from the application of self-regulation study strategies, academic self-efficacy, study skills, need for achievement, and procrastination. As part of a larger study looking at the effect of a study skill intervention, 49 college aged students were assessed for the variables listed above. A statistically significant correlation was found between self-regulation and self-efficacy. Using a multiple regression, the variables together predicted students’ GPAs, however, it was only study skills that was a statistically significant predictor. In zero-order correlations, self-regulation and self-efficacy were significantly correlated. More research should be done …

Surviving Imprisonment In America: Drama Therapy For Incarcerated Women, Kendall Crawford
Surviving Imprisonment In America: Drama Therapy For Incarcerated Women, Kendall Crawford
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
With the United States positioned as the leading nation in incarceration rates, the intentional use of theatre in order to achieve psychological growth and change within inmates is an invaluable asset to the healing of the imprisoned, specifically to incarcerated women who have undergone sexual trauma. Navigating prison for women is often combined with the trauma of sexual assault, as almost half the women in the nation’s jails and prisons were sexually abused prior to their imprisonment. With an emphasis on punishment, prisons often have the effect of retraumatization and revictimization rather than rehabilitation for abused women. Through the integration …
