Conductors' Annotated Scores: A Comprehensive Study, Leandro De Magalhaes Gazineo Feb 2019

Conductors' Annotated Scores: A Comprehensive Study, Leandro De Magalhaes Gazineo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Conductors’ annotations have a different nature and goal from those of orchestral musicians.

The purpose of this study is to obtain a better understanding of the process of conductors’ annotations based on examined scores[1]collected from professional conductors and supported by a questionnaire answered by twenty-seven participants.

Certain questions provided a better understanding of the elements used in conductors’ annotations. For example: Why do some conductors prefer to use symbols, words, numbers, or colors? What kind of annotations are more suitable to specific repertories? Why are reinforcement markings, although redundant, so popular among conductors and why do some conductors …

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is developing regulations to control the future exploitation of deep-sea mineral resources including sulphide deposits near hydrothermal vents, polymetallic nodules on the abyssal seafloor, and cobalt crusts on seamounts. Under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea the ISA is required to adopt are taking measures to ensure the effective protection of the marine environment from harmful effects arising from mining-related activities. Contractors are required to generate environmental baselines and assess the potential environmental consequences of deep seafloor mining. Understandably, nearly all environmental research has focused on the seafloor where the most direct …

Untangling Knots: Embodied Diagramming Practices In Knot Theory, Kate Mccallum Jan 2019

Untangling Knots: Embodied Diagramming Practices In Knot Theory, Kate Mccallum

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The low visibility and specialised languages of mathematical work pose challenges for the ethnographic study of communication in mathematics, but observation-based study can offer a real-world grounding to questions about the nature of its methods. This paper uses theoretical ideas from linguistic pragmatics to examine how mutual understandings of diagrams are achieved in the course of conference presentations. Presenters use shared knowledge to train others to interpret diagrams in the ways favoured by the community of experts, directing an audience’s attention so as to develop a shared understanding of a diagram’s features and possible manipulations. In this way, expectations about …

Project Insight: A Granular Approach To Enterprise Cybersecurity, Sunna Quazi, Adam Baca, Sam Darsche

SMU Data Science Review

In this paper, we disambiguate risky activity corporate users are propagating with their software in real time by creating an enterprise security visualization solution for system administrators. The current problem in this domain is the lag in cyber intelligence that inhibits preventative security measure execution. This is partially due to the overemphasis of network activity, which is a nonfinite dataset and is difficult to comprehensively ingest with analytics. We address these concerns by elaborating on the beta of a software called "Insight" created by Felix Security. The overall solution leverages endpoint data along with preexisting whitelist/blacklist designations to unambiguously communicate …

A 3d Tree Visualization Of Network Data Based On Webvr, Lin Ding, Guoxin Huang, Xu Ying

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A new method of three dimensional tree-style visualization of network data is proposed in this paper based on cluster computing, which maps the network structure of clustered data to hierarchical tree structure. The number of nodes of a community is treated as the weight to improve the PhylloTrees' phyllotactic layout algorithm and the 3D visualization of network data is implemented based on WebVR. Friendly interactive manipulations are achieved in the immersive VR scene such as rotation, zooming, pan, picking, and transparent fade / highlight enhancement of different displaying. The experimental results show that our method can show not only …

Cross-Mediterranean Egyptian Migrants: A Discursive Analysis, Sara Hussein Jan 2019

Cross-Mediterranean Egyptian Migrants: A Discursive Analysis, Sara Hussein

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates how the Egyptian migrant subject who chooses to cross the Mediterranean through irregular means to reach Europe is discursively constructed in Egyptian media, particularly in the wake of the 2016 Rashid boat sinking. In both official and public discourse, this highly visible and well-documented accident raised questions on accountability and the role of the state in this situation. By identifying and analyzing the themes represented throughout a diverse collected fieldwork corpus of various Egyptian media, statements by public officials and organizations, newspaper articles and editorials, television talk show programming, and popular cultural production, this thesis offers a …

Variable Scale Point Cloud Registration Algorithm, Shuifa Sun, Zhun Li, Kun Xia, Yunfei Shi, Jiquan Yang, Fangmin Dong Jan 2019

Variable Scale Point Cloud Registration Algorithm, Shuifa Sun, Zhun Li, Kun Xia, Yunfei Shi, Jiquan Yang, Fangmin Dong

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: To address the low registration accuracy issue caused by scale mismatch of two point clouds, a multi-scale point cloud registration algorithm is proposed based on the distance ratio invariance of the geometric center of gravity and centroid. The point cloud is firstly filtered. Then, the scale ratio calculation model of the point cloud data is established by computing the point cloud’s gravity center and centroid. Finally, according to the relationship between the registration error and the scale true value, the scale factor is refined step by step with ICP algorithm. For the noise and the inconsistent point in the …

The Urban Inn: Gathering Space, Hierarchy And Material Culture In The Eighteenth-Century British Town, Daniel Maudlin Jan 2019

The Urban Inn: Gathering Space, Hierarchy And Material Culture In The Eighteenth-Century British Town, Daniel Maudlin

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

ABSTRACT: This article locates the ‘principal inn’ within the physical and cultural space of the eighteenth-century British town. The principal inn was the all-purpose venue for the sociable activities of polite society: from dining, drinking and conversing with friends to business deals, meetings of club and societies, legal proceedings, military musters, civic and religious proceedings. Through their central location, carefully designed interior spaces and refined material culture of furniture, fixtures and fittings, principal inns were key sites in the elite control of urban space, the enforcement of social hierarchies and the reinforcement of social values.

Cloud Fraction Of Satellite Imagery Based On Convolutional Neural Networks, Xia Min, Maoyang Shen, Jianfeng Wang, Yangguang Wang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Cloud fraction is the basis for the application of meteorological satellite. Existing methods cannot use all the characteristics and optical parameters of the satellite cloud, which results in the inaccuracy of cloud detection and cloud fraction. In order to solve this problem, convolutional neural network is used for cloud detection. Based on the improved convolutional neural network, the satellite cloud image is divided into thin cloud, thick cloud and clear sky. Based on the cloud detection, an improved spatial correlation method is used for cloud fraction. The results for Chinese HJ-1A/B satellite imagery show that convolutional neural network can …

Let's Take A Selfie! Living In A Snapchat Beauty Filtered World:The Impact It Has On Women's Beauty Perceptions, Angelina Cruz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Snapchat's beauty filters have become a prominent force in the social media realm. It's vital in understanding the impact in how Snapchat's beauty filters shape beauty standards among young women. This became the primary motivation of conducting this qualitative study. Six focus groups were conducted to explore the depths of why female college students between the ages of 18-25 decide to post either selfies with Snapchat's beauty filters applied or natural images. Dialectical tensions theory was used as the foundation for this study to explore both the internal and external discursive struggles young women face when deciding to post natural …
