Known Unknowns: Design Thinking In The Entrepreneurial Wilderness, S Black May 2019

Known Unknowns: Design Thinking In The Entrepreneurial Wilderness, S Black

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This paper will look at how motion graphics are made, by exploring design methodologies. It will look initially at a research practice from the related field of illustration, with two interviews with motion graphics practitioners employed subsequently to suggest that the methodology identified therein is transferable to professional practice more broadly. I will outline an inductive approach to research and design practice, which involves not knowing what the final outcome might be but having a sound grasp of methods to explore the problem. The discourse surrounding design thinking and critical thinking will be drawn upon to propose that the approach …

From The Book Page To The Big Screen: An Exploration Of Literature-To-Film Adaptions And Their Use In The Classroom, Natalie Hahn

Senior Honors Theses

Many classic titles of children’s literature have been adapted into feature film presentations. Although often regarded as a mere form of entertainment, movies can and should be incorporated into the elementary classroom as supplementary material to be paired with their corresponding works of literature. The four examples provided include Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie. Each of these four works originated as a book that was later recreated into a film format with varying degrees of accuracy to …

Rovar: Authentic Travel Leveraging Local Social Media, Akshay Kumar Arun

Theses

In our era of constant technological development and an intricate network of information exchange, people tend to rely on online sources for their travels more and more. But because of the time crunch, people travel in, many places of authentic value go unnoticed. Take the ramen shop in Sankri, at the foothills of the Siwalik ranges of the Himalayas for example. It was here that I had one of the most authentic ramen noodles at a small little quaint shop which used hill spices to give it a unique flavor. This store was nowhere on the map, and if I …

Senso - A Real-Time Interactive Mobile System To Improve Users’ Overall Skin Condition, Wenyue Zhan

Theses

Healthy skin is a critical part of overall health for everyone and not only important for appearance. Useful information about the skin is often overwhelming, misleading, or difficult to obtain. There are many factors that affect the skin’s condition, from environmental conditions like UV, humidity, or lifestyle factors like diet and the amount of sleep a person gets to specific ingredients in cosmetics. All this makes the effective management of skin health time consuming and inaccurate without knowing where to find the right information.

This project explores a theoretical system that is designed to help users understand and manage their …

Neoclassicism And Camp In Sir William Hamilton’S Naples, Ersy Contogouris May 2019

Neoclassicism And Camp In Sir William Hamilton’S Naples, Ersy Contogouris

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

Susan Sontag, in her now-classic “Notes on Camp” (1964), traces the origins of camp to the eighteenth century (13, 14, 33). And although it is precisely the baroque and rococo art movements against which Winckelmann rebelled that Sontag identifies as camp, it is worth reflecting on whether the notion of imitation that is central to both movements – imitation of ancient works in the case of neoclassicism, and imitation as parody in the case of camp (Meyer 7) – might not bring the two closer. Once the conceptual chasm separating neoclassicism and camp has begun to be bridged, we can …

Seeing Through Feeling, Christopher Mitchell Rodgers

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to describe both the inherent formal qualities and conceptual framework that are addressed within the exhibition, Seeing Through Feeling. The exhibition is centered around the methodology of making, collection, and display all through the one singular positioning, the object. The objects within the exhibition are either handmade or collected fragments that weave together around the singular position of craft and history under the pretense of how our understanding of time may not always be true. The thesis breaks down key components through specific themes into the categories of the hand, eye, symbol, object, value, …

Understanding Indian Interior Design Education: From The Indian Design Professionals' Perspective, Darshi Mody

Full-Text Theses & Dissertations

Higher design education in India is not recognized as one of the major educational pathways, which has led to a system in which both public and private institutions offer design degrees without reference to fixed standards of curriculum and uniformity. There is also a lack of publicly available information and knowledge about design schools along with the immense complexity and diversity within the offerings of different design programs at various institutions (Coyle, Lotten, & Dubber, 2015). Prospective design students are at risk of pursuing courses of studies that neither adequately prepare nor credential them for professional work or graduate studies. …

The Suburban Nightmare: A Study Of Atmosphere, Mood And Emotion, Ericka Sobrack May 2019

The Suburban Nightmare: A Study Of Atmosphere, Mood And Emotion, Ericka Sobrack

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis body of work, I focus on the implied human presence through the lack of actual human figures. I believe there is more to say in a landscape with the absence of the figure, allowing the dialogue to be read and interpreted by a larger audience. I am particularly satisfied with White Knuckles, shown in figure 3, because I collide reason with imagination, thus contradicting the context and interpretation of the subject matter. In White Knuckles, I deal with formal elements such as composition, atmosphere, lightness and darkness as well as nuances of color. I have also considered …

The Ecology Of Dynamic Body Color In The Green Anole, Anolis Carolinensis, Daisy M. Horr May 2019

The Ecology Of Dynamic Body Color In The Green Anole, Anolis Carolinensis, Daisy M. Horr

Biology Honors Theses

Organisms capable of physiological body color change can respond rapidly to changes in their social or external environment. Given that color change is often context-dependent, studying the role of color change can provide insights into how different organisms respond to and interact with their immediate environment. Currently there are three main hypotheses which explain the adaptive significance of rapid color change, including camouflage, social signaling, and thermoregulation. Green anoles, Anolis carolinensis, are one such species that use physiological color change to rapidly shift their dorsal body color from bright green to dark brown within seconds. Thus, they may use darkening …
