The Nail That Sticks Up Isn't Always Hammered Down: Women, Employment Discrimination, And Litigiousness In Japan, Kristen Luck Jan 2019

The Nail That Sticks Up Isn't Always Hammered Down: Women, Employment Discrimination, And Litigiousness In Japan, Kristen Luck

Theses and Dissertations

Much recent scholarship is devoted to projecting Japan’s future and analyzing its prospects as a global power. After two decades of economic stagnation, alarming demographic trends, and the 3/11 triple disaster, some scholars argue that Japan is grappling with an era of precarity, marked with instability and anxiety. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe returned to office in 2012, promoting his economic reform policy, “Abenomics” and within the third “arrow" of this approach targeting structural reforms, he promoted “womenomics”, a term coined by Kathy Matsui of Goldman-Sachs. Prime Minister Abe’s objective is to create a society where "women can shine” and women …

A Thesis Is A Product Is A Tracking, Yixue Li Jan 2019

A Thesis Is A Product Is A Tracking, Yixue Li

Theses and Dissertations

In this work, I discuss how global products/ identities are made, transported and consumed, and the inevitable ‘mis-’ in acts of transmission. This research ranges from the miscommunication in languages and linguistics, to the gap between production and consumption. I investigate how things and humans are misread, mispronounced, misfit and mistranslated when they traverse social and cultural borders, arriving at a place in between languages, holding on to and letting go of things that are familiar to neither and both cultures. This work explores diverse media such as publications, videos and installations, and examines how they maybe used to address …

Kinder And Less Just: A Critical Analysis Of Modern Gleaning Organizations And Their Place In Food Recovery Discourse, Anna Clare Gorman Jan 2019

Kinder And Less Just: A Critical Analysis Of Modern Gleaning Organizations And Their Place In Food Recovery Discourse, Anna Clare Gorman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The practice of gleaning began as a way for the poor to provide sustenance for themselves and their families. Changes in societal ideas about private property as well as a shift toward a neoliberal style of governance have caused gleaning to become what it is today: a practice primarily undertaken by charitable organizations, nonprofits, and church groups who then donate their bounty to local food banks, providing fresh produce to the food insecure. In modern society, gleaning is often held up as a single solution to the problems of food insecurity, poor nutrition, and food waste. This thesis complicates that …

The Experience Of Founder's Syndrome In Nonprofit Organizations Founded By Women, Coutanya Moultry Coombs Jan 2019

The Experience Of Founder's Syndrome In Nonprofit Organizations Founded By Women, Coutanya Moultry Coombs

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Gaps exist in the literature on knowledge of how founder behavior affects volunteers and employees in nonprofit organizations. Through exploration of founder relationships with volunteers and employees, this study fills some of those gaps and adds to the body of knowledge of how those relationships are perceived by founders, volunteers, and employees. The purpose of this narrative study was to address the question of the impact of founder behavior on founders, employees and volunteers in nonprofit women's organizations founded by African American and Caucasian women. The theory of psychological ownership was used as the framework to understand founder behavior. The …

Social Anxiety, Quality Of Life, And Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Of Women With Infertility Problems, Esra Savaş

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Not having a child has significant psychosocial effects on women experiencing infertility problems. There is a gap in research on social anxiety, quality of life, and healthy lifestyle behaviors of women during infertility, fertility treatment, and subsequent pregnancy. The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to investigate the social anxiety, quality of life, and healthy lifestyle behaviors of Turkish women with infertility issues and Turkish women who conceived after infertility treatment, as measured by the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, the Fertility Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale II. The social support and stress buffering theory …

Emergency Responders' Perceptions Of Mental Health Patients While Providing Care In Rural Areas, Cindy Perkinson Costilla Jan 2019

Emergency Responders' Perceptions Of Mental Health Patients While Providing Care In Rural Areas, Cindy Perkinson Costilla

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Prior research has shown a correlation between public stigma and emergency responders' perceptions of mental health patients while providing care. However, research examining public stigma and emergency responders' perceptions of mental health patients is limited in rural areas. The purpose of this study was to explore possible relationships between the dependent variable, public stigma, and the independent variables: social distance, blameworthiness, and fear of unpredictable behavior. Link's modified labeling theory was the theoretical framework for this study. A sample of 92 emergency responders obtained from Facebook completed a questionnaire that consisted of three Likert scales. A multiple regression showed little …

Geographic Profiling: Contributions To The Investigation Of Serial Murders, Beth Nichols Jan 2019

Geographic Profiling: Contributions To The Investigation Of Serial Murders, Beth Nichols

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Most research studies have focused on profiling serial killers but have not heavily utilized geographic profiling to complete this work. The purpose of this study is to determine whether geographic profiling software programs can assist in serial murder cases. The study will utilize CrimeStat geographical profiling software to look at the significance of disposal or dump sites, the residence of the killer, and the distance between the dumpsite and the serial killer’s residence. This research utilizes a mix -methods approach (case studies and GIS analysis) to analyze five solved case studies of male serial murderers to determine whether they live …

Classism, Ableism, And The Rise Of Epistemic Injustice Against White, Working-Class Men, Sarah E. Bostic Jan 2019

Classism, Ableism, And The Rise Of Epistemic Injustice Against White, Working-Class Men, Sarah E. Bostic

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I illustrate how epistemic injustice functions in the divide between white working-class men and the educated elite by discussing the discursive ways in which working-class knowledge and experience are devalued as legitimate sources of knowledge. I demonstrate this by using critical discourse analysis to interpret the underlying attitudes and ideologies in comments made by Clinton and Trump during their 2016 presidential campaigns. I also discuss how these ideologies are positively or negatively perceived by Trump’s working-class base. Using feminist standpoint theory and phenomenology as a lens of interpretation, I argue that white working-class men are increasingly alienated …

A Practitioner Survey Exploring The Value Of Forensic Tools, Ai, Filtering, & Safer Presentation For Investigating Child Sexual Abuse Material, Laura Sanchez, Cinthya Grajeda, Ibrahim Baggili, Cory Hall

Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

For those investigating cases of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), there is the potential harm of experiencing trauma after illicit content exposure over a period of time. Research has shown that those working on such cases can experience psychological distress. As a result, there has been a greater effort to create and implement technologies that reduce exposure to CSAM. However, not much work has explored gathering insight regarding the functionality, effectiveness, accuracy, and importance of digital forensic tools and data science technologies from practitioners who use them. This study focused specifically on examining the value practitioners give to the tools …

Arab Americanesque, Hannah W. Shaban Jan 2019

Arab Americanesque, Hannah W. Shaban

Theses and Dissertations

Culture, as defined by Edward Said, is a concept of identity selectively curated through imperialism. Through my ceramic practice, I explore what constitutes my cultural identity as a first generation Arab American. My work, primarily influenced by family narrative was initially expressed through investigations in the figure and viewer relationships with my sculpted figures. As my research progressed into Western Imperialism, I began noticing extensive evidence of colonialism’s lasting effects, especially within Western consumer markets. Interest in the writings of Said, works by French Orientalist painters, family memory, and a general displeasure with the plethora of Middle Eastern design used …

An Exploration Of Teacher Perceptions Of The Presence Of Cultural Reproduction In Two Middle Schools, Kaitlyn Montcrieff Jan 2019

An Exploration Of Teacher Perceptions Of The Presence Of Cultural Reproduction In Two Middle Schools, Kaitlyn Montcrieff

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Contemporary challenges to education pose threats that our current educational system remains unable to meet. With the prevalence of school shootings, rapid technological development, threats to mental health, superficial curriculum content, increased testing standards, and continued inequality in classrooms, now more than ever it is imperative to define, explore, and quantify the ways in which the system of education reproduces or replicates norms, values, behaviors, and practices and the effects these possibly have on students and teachers. The purpose of this research is to redefine 'cultural reproduction' into reproduction and replication in order to explore how the education system in …

A Narrative Research Study Of Self-Selected Tracking On Motivation In 10th Grade English Language Arts Classes, Audra Greuel Jan 2019

A Narrative Research Study Of Self-Selected Tracking On Motivation In 10th Grade English Language Arts Classes, Audra Greuel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The practice of tracking has had longstanding negative impacts on students, especially students in lower academic tracks. This research suggests that tracking develops the themes of a narrative of deficit through inequality and exclusion and impedes student motivation due to the negative implications. A common finding of outside research studies was that of disapproval for the current school organizational structure of tracking due to the negative consequences on students. Furthermore, several research studies developed an outline of positive ways to advocate for a unifying system of educational change. Educational leaders should heed the suggestions of researchers to promote changes within …

Bayesian Analysis For The Intraclass Model And For The Quantile Semiparametric Mixed-Effects Double Regression Models, Duo Zhang Jan 2019

Bayesian Analysis For The Intraclass Model And For The Quantile Semiparametric Mixed-Effects Double Regression Models, Duo Zhang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

This dissertation consists of three distinct but related research projects. The first two projects focus on objective Bayesian hypothesis testing and estimation for the intraclass correlation coefficient in linear models. The third project deals with Bayesian quantile inference for the semiparametric mixed-effects double regression models. In the first project, we derive the Bayes factors based on the divergence-based priors for testing the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The hypothesis testing of the ICC is used to test the uncorrelatedness in multilevel modeling, and it has not well been studied from an objective Bayesian perspective. Simulation results show that the two sorts …

Supplier Relationship Management For Circular Economy: Influence Of External Pressures And Top Management Commitment, R Dubey, A Gunasekaran, Sj Childe, T Papadopoulos, P Helo Jan 2019

Supplier Relationship Management For Circular Economy: Influence Of External Pressures And Top Management Commitment, R Dubey, A Gunasekaran, Sj Childe, T Papadopoulos, P Helo

Plymouth Business School

With considerable international awareness of circular economy (CE), the purpose of the study is to propose a theoretical framework, informed by institutional theory and upper echelon theory, to explain how top management commitment mediates the relationship between external pressures and supplier relationship management (SRM) practices for circular economy. We test our hypotheses using cross-sectional data gathered using a survey of companies involved in sustainability practices. The results of the hierarchical regression and mediating regression analyses suggest that top management commitment positively mediates the effect of external institutional pressures on supplier relationship management. We advance existing theory by integrating institutional theory …

The Biocultural Evolution Of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Amanda Rielinger Jan 2019

The Biocultural Evolution Of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Amanda Rielinger

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are described as abnonnal immune responses to the gastrointestinal microbiota. The etiology of IBD is unknown; however, it is associated with Western, industrialized societies. A better understanding of the origins and treatments of IBD can lead to improved health outcomes. This paper seeks to examine IBD from a cultural, environmental, and evolutionary perspective. The effects of cultural and environmental factors, such as diagnostic practices, diet, breastfeeding practices, antibiotic use, appendectomy, and environmental radiation exposure on the risk of developing IBD are discussed. The efficacy of various treatments for IBD …

Addiction As Disease, Teneille R. Brown Jan 2019

Addiction As Disease, Teneille R. Brown

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

The opioid addiction epidemic is the most overwhelming public health crisis our country has faced. It is now creating a legal crisis, as the its poisonous fruits spill over into the criminal, tort, and family courts. The epidemic costs the U.S. economy about $500 billion every year, and the pressure is crippling our legal systems. This Article is an attempt to relieve some of that pressure, by advocating for a comprehensive public health campaign based upon a new model of addiction. Research shows that the prevalent “moral choice” model of addiction has facilitated stigma and discouraged treatment, by viewing affected …

#Squadgoals: A Response To Seth Waxman, Amelia Rinehart Jan 2019

#Squadgoals: A Response To Seth Waxman, Amelia Rinehart

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Former Solicitor General Seth Waxman’s recent remarks, framing our current age of patent law in the Supreme Court as “interesting times,” unquestionably captures the exhilaration of an active Supreme Court in this area of the law. Waxman knows his way around patent cases decided by the Supreme Court — he presented arguments in four of the six patent cases in the 2016 Term — but he also has an extensive appellate practice before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (“Federal Circuit”), which has exclusive appellate jurisdiction over patent cases. Given his substantial experience in patent appellate litigation, Waxman …

(De)Constructed Gender And Romance In Steven Universe: A Queer Analysis, Olivia Vogt Jan 2019

(De)Constructed Gender And Romance In Steven Universe: A Queer Analysis, Olivia Vogt

Communication

As LGBTQ issues come to the forefront of discussion, the acceptance of queer television is becoming more common. However, research has shown that seemingly progressive shows often reinforce dominant ideologies, despite the presence of queer characters or themes. This analysis seeks to understand whether the children's animated series, Steven Universe, is as progressive as reviews would make it seem. Two open-ended research questions are used to explore the constructions of gender and romance in the series. Through the use of queer analysis, this study reveals that the series is indeed queer. The series narrative subverts gender through the deconstruction of …

Newspapers As A Form Of Settler Colonialism: An Examination Of The Dakota Access Pipeline Protest And American Indian Representation In Indigenous, State, And National News, Kay Marie Beckermann Jan 2019

Newspapers As A Form Of Settler Colonialism: An Examination Of The Dakota Access Pipeline Protest And American Indian Representation In Indigenous, State, And National News, Kay Marie Beckermann

Communication

Settler colonial history underlies much of contemporary industry, including the extraction and transportation of crude oil. It presents itself in a variety of contexts; however, this disquisition applies a traditional Marxist perspective to examine how settler colonialism is present in news media representation of American Indian activists during the Dakota Access Pipeline protest. Rather than focus on the benefit of using colonized labor for financial gain, this disquisition pushes Marxism into settler colonialism in which the goal is to eliminate the Indigenous and continue to widen the gap between social classes. This research is important for two reasons. First, the …

Consequential Validity And Social Studies Education: An Examination Of Standards, Assessment Policies, And Teacher Preparation, Michael Scott Learn Jan 2019

Consequential Validity And Social Studies Education: An Examination Of Standards, Assessment Policies, And Teacher Preparation, Michael Scott Learn

Education

Educational quality is a way to influence the future of the American economy (Hanushek, 1986). Large-scale assessments are designed to determine quality in education by measuring student achievement. A connection exists between the standards, teachers, and assessments that form a system of accountability within education. State and national accountability policies place value in certain educational fields, thereby preferring some while excluding others. As a result, accountability systems influence the field of social studies in several unanticipated ways. Consequential validity suggests that assessments should include value implications and relevance (Messick, 1989). While assessment research examines the disciplines of mathematics, science, and …

Toward A More Visually Literate Writing Classroom: An Analysis Of Visual Communication Pedagogy And Practices, Darren Allan Zufelt Jan 2019

Toward A More Visually Literate Writing Classroom: An Analysis Of Visual Communication Pedagogy And Practices, Darren Allan Zufelt

English

“Toward a More Visually Literate Writing Classroom: An Analysis of Visual Communication Pedagogy and Practices” examines the teaching of visual communication in undergraduate professional and technical communication courses. Through an analysis of scholarship, textbooks, I argue that a situated visual communication pedagogy that integrates both analysis and reflection throughout the visual production and design process can better allow students to understand the ways in which the visual participates within larger social and cultural contexts. This understanding helps students develop abilities to potentially transform visual discourses emphasizing that all visual documents and texts, including the ones they produce, participate in shaping …

Enumeration Of Dense Modules In Networks, Yashwanth Goud Durgapathi Jan 2019

Enumeration Of Dense Modules In Networks, Yashwanth Goud Durgapathi

Computer Science

To analyze large networks in various research fields including biology, sociology, and web mining, detection of dense modules (a.k.a. clusters) is a crucial step. Though numerous methods have been proposed to this aim, they often lack mathematical rigor. Namely, there is no guarantee that all dense modules are detected. Here, a novel method for enumerating all dense modules is presented as well as a python program implementing this algorithm. Module detection plays a significant role in variety of modern systems to understand their functionality in depth for example in Biology. In Biology many data bases for the protein-protein interactions are …
