Cold Tolerance, Temperature Mediated Discontinuous Gas Exchange, And Emergence Of The Blue Orchard Mason Bee (Osmia Lignaria), Logan Kral
All Master's Theses
The relationship between low temperatures, emergence and supercooling point of Osmia lignaria were the subject of this study. One hundred sixty-eight bees were subjected to 5 pre-wintering temperature treatments (two constant temperature controls - 22oC, 14oC, one of which with and one without a 12h photoperiod, and three 12h:12h thermoperiod treatments – 14:10oC, 14:5oC, and 14:0oC) and were then evaluated in terms of emergence time and post-emergence vigor. An additional 70 bees were tested for metabolic rate and discontinuous gas exchange in response to test temperature conditions. An additional sample …
Water And Life. A Cross-Sectional Study On Determinants Of Beverage Consumption And Water Access In One Tribal Community, Christina White
Water And Life. A Cross-Sectional Study On Determinants Of Beverage Consumption And Water Access In One Tribal Community, Christina White
All Master's Theses
Increasingly, poor diet has been shown to be one of the most crucial factors associated with cause of death, even more critical than smoking. Research in the past two decades has consistently linked increased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) to the obesity epidemic contributing to a public health crisis all over the United States. Native Americans, among other minority groups, suffer obesity disproportionately from the rest of the US population, yet they continually fail to be included in research on the subject. Traditional research methods, sparse care coverage on reservations, consolidation of unique tribes into one classification, and failure to …

A Comparative Analysis Of Counterhegemonic Environmental-Economic Projects In Latin America And The United States, Dominic Scicchitano
Honors Theses
The objective of this study is to perform a comparative analysis of counterhegemonic environmental-economic projects in the United States and in Latin America. The work builds on research that I conducted throughout my time at Bucknell University concerning a site known as Better Farm, which distinguishes itself as “a 65-acre sustainability campus, artists' colony, animal sanctuary, and organic farm” located in Redwood, New York (www.betterfarm.org). Better Farm functions as a locus for the surrounding community of roughly 700 residents, connecting a variety of persons interested in both formal sustainability education and informal systems whereby community members support each …
Contextualizing Sexual Assault Data Collection On College Campuses: A Socio-Technical Approach, Anushikha Sharma
Contextualizing Sexual Assault Data Collection On College Campuses: A Socio-Technical Approach, Anushikha Sharma
Honors Theses
Sexual assault is a rampant issue on college campuses in the United States. Colleges and universities use a variety of survey instruments to collect data regarding sexual assault as a means to improve campus culture, policies, and resources. These instruments contain a wealth of associated information in the form of metadata, that is, data about data.
This project takes a human-centered socio-technical approach to understanding the data collection processes associated with sexual assault, specifically, on the campus of Bucknell University. By identifying the underlying metadata within the data collection processes, this research contextualizes and critiques the process of data collection, …
The Effect Of Religion On Trait Priority In Potential Partners In Short And Long Term Relationships, Sara K. Glass
The Effect Of Religion On Trait Priority In Potential Partners In Short And Long Term Relationships, Sara K. Glass
Honors Theses
This study builds upon previous research that demonstrates how various demographic characteristics, as well as relationship type, affects trait preferences for potential mate partners. This study also explores the potential effects of religious affiliation and religiosity on trait preferences, as no previous research explicitly tests how individuals’ religious affiliation or strength of religiosity influences their rank ordering of potential partner traits. Seven hypotheses were proposed, as well as four points of exploration regarding sexuality, relationship status, religious affiliation, and race were proposed. Hypotheses 1, which predicted that women will rank financial stability higher than men and that men will rank …
Els Catalans Són Diferents: Catalan Independence Through A Cultural Lens, Maren Burling
Els Catalans Són Diferents: Catalan Independence Through A Cultural Lens, Maren Burling
Honors Theses
With a focus on Catalan independence, this thesis looks at how Catalans create and perform their regional identity, and how cultural symbols of Catalan society – food, sports, language, and others – are uniquely situated within the wider Spanish society. Both linguistic anthropology and symbolic/interpretive anthropology inform my writing and support my argument for the importance of language and other cultural symbols to Catalan identity, which are key to understanding Catalan separatism. My research contributes to current conversations in anthropology about the role of cultural identity in creating community. I argue that, in the Catalan case, cultural identity both shapes …
How The Mexican Cartels Have Capitalized On U.S. Policies, Ande Troutman
How The Mexican Cartels Have Capitalized On U.S. Policies, Ande Troutman
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis investigated how the Mexican cartels have taken advantage of loop holes in U.S. policy to grow their drug market and power. Three policies were examined to demonstrate how the cartels adapted to policy changes and continued to thrive and expand. The first policy analyzed was the North American Free Trade Agreement, which opened up the borders between Mexico and the United States. The next policy investigated was the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996, which instituted harsher punishments for illegal immigration and caused mass deportation. The final policy examined was the Federal Assault Weapons Ban …

“Me? An Addict?” Good News For Shame And Addiction, Rebecca Grisell
“Me? An Addict?” Good News For Shame And Addiction, Rebecca Grisell
Doctor of Ministry
Addictions have penetrated all segments of society, including the Church. The problems addicts face is complicated, complex, and challenging for the church and ministry practitioners. Alongside the rising rate of addiction, society’s shame-awareness has also risen. This is not coincidental or unimportant. While addictive behavior seeks bonding, shame resists bonding. It is the contrary and paradoxical nature of this problem that makes it confusing, mysterious, and perplexing.
Yet there is hope. When shame is addressed with the good news of the Gospel, addiction will lose its grasp and new recovery solutions will arise. This dissertation suggests that the inability to …
The Criminal (In)Justice System Of Virginia: A Critical Reflection And Analysis, Alicia Jiggetts
The Criminal (In)Justice System Of Virginia: A Critical Reflection And Analysis, Alicia Jiggetts
Student Publications
More often than not, society’s attention is hyper-focused on the criminal justice system at the national level. The United States of America has been called out for leading the world in mass incarceration, and scholars like Michelle Alexander and Angela Davis, lawyer activists like Bryan Stevenson, and filmmakers like Ava DuVernay, have played integral roles in making our society collectively pause and take a critical look at our prison nation and the myriad of social inequities and injustices that manifest within it. Our nation is home to five percent (5%) of the global population but accounts for twenty-five percent (25%) …

Roger Nash Baldwin And The St. Louis Civil Liberties Trail: Celebrating 100 Years Of The Aclu With Search For The Organization's Conceptual Founding, Patrick C. Brayer
Faculty Works
This article traces the role of Roger Nash Baldwin as a leading figure in the American civil liberties movement in the early twentieth century. In particular, the article highlights the central role of St. Louis in this history. At the advice of family friend Louis Brandeis, Baldwin moved to St. Louis to become a sociology professor at Washington University. At the time, St. Louis was a center of migration for African Americans escaping oppression in the South. The article traces a variety of geographical locations throughout St. Louis that were important to Baldwin’s development as a leader in the civil …

Anger From Within: The Role Of Emotions In Disengagement From Violent Extremism, Peter Simi, Steven Windisch, Daniel Harris, Gina Ligon
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
There is growing recognition about the similarities between generic criminality and violent extremism. Using data derived from a unique set of in-depth life history interviews with 40 former U.S. white supremacists, as well as previous studies of criminal desistance, we examine the emotional valence that characterizes actors' descriptions of the disengagement process. More specifically, results suggest that negative emotions (i.e., anger and frustration) directed toward the extremist group and oneself function as a catalyst for disengagement. Negative emotions become a source of motivation in re-evaluating the relative importance of the group as it relates to the individual. Ultimately, the reevaluation …

Administrative Law In An Era Of Partisan Volatility, Michael A. Livermore, Daniel Richardson
Administrative Law In An Era Of Partisan Volatility, Michael A. Livermore, Daniel Richardson
Emory Law Journal
Contemporary politics is characterized by a polarized national discourse, weak party organizations, volatile control of government, and an increasingly assertive executive. These political dynamics interact with a system of administrative law inherited from different political times that is ill-suited to addressing the risks of the current moment, which include threats to administrative values such as efficiency, impartiality, and expertise; to democratic values such as accountability, transparency, and participation; and, most generally, to the ability of the law to benefit social well-being through sound policymaking. In recent years, some legal scholars have become attuned to the interaction between administration and these …
Legitimizing Character Evidence, Justin Sevier
Legitimizing Character Evidence, Justin Sevier
Emory Law Journal
Modern consensus among legal commentators is that character evidence¿when used to show that an individual behaved in accordance with her predisposition to commit some act¿is an illegitimate form of fact-finding proof. This consensus is codified in the Federal Rules of Evidence, which forbids the use of most ¿propensity evidence¿ at trial. Defenders of the ban suggest, without empirical proof, that jurors would overvalue the probative worth of propensity evidence and that the public would balk at such evidence as a matter of legal procedure. Using insights from social psychology, this Article reports the results of three original experiments, which examine …
The Problems With Pornography Regulation: Lessons From History, Thomas C. Arthur
The Problems With Pornography Regulation: Lessons From History, Thomas C. Arthur
Emory Law Journal
A growing new anti-pornography movement has arisen in reaction to the ready availability of pornography on the Internet. It seeks stricter legal prohibitions on ¿obscene¿ materials, even when viewed in private homes, and greater enforcement of existing laws. History demonstrates that these proposals are unsound for three reasons. First, ¿obscene¿ pornography is difficult to define without violating the First Amendment. Second, Prohibition demonstrates the difficulties of laws depriving citizens of goods that they desire on moral grounds they do not share. Censorship of online pornography would present similar problems. Third, any broader definition of obscenity would be inconsistent with basic …

The purpose of the study is to provide current and future generations of occupational therapists a view of the history and how occupational therapy practice has evolved from its inception to current practice through the life history stories of occupational therapists who have held leadership roles at the national level and beyond. It is anticipated that the life history process will be a powerful way to gather this information. This life history is part of the larger study consisting of 30 occupational therapists. The larger project is Histories of Individuals Who Have Been Influential in Developing Occupational Therapy (OT) at …
Bringing Swirly Music To Life: Why Copyright Law Should Adopt Patent Law Standards For Joint Authorship Of Sound Engineers, Andrew Nietes
Bringing Swirly Music To Life: Why Copyright Law Should Adopt Patent Law Standards For Joint Authorship Of Sound Engineers, Andrew Nietes
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
Geoff Emerick, acclaimed sound engineer for The Beatles, passed away in October of 2018. Emerick helped shape The Beatles’ sound and worked to create many of their most recognized songs, yet, under the current joint authorship standards he likely would not be considered an author of these songs. This Note details the work carried out by sound engineers in the music industry and describes how current joint authorship standards affect them. It then proposes a reinterpretation of joint authorship in the copyright statute to ease these standards by borrowing from another area of intellectual property law.

Autonomy, Intimate Partner Violence, And Maternal Health-Seeking Behavior: Findings From Mixed-Methods Analysis In Nigeria, Pooja Sripad, Charity Ndwiga, Charlotte E. Warren
Reproductive Health
Gendered norms and discriminatory practices often limit women’s decision-making power, which over time can lead to social norms that systematically subordinate women. Aspects of empowerment were explored in a global evaluation of Demographic and Health Survey data that measured how gendered social norms influenced maternal health-seeking behaviors. Analysis specifically explored associations of women’s autonomy and acceptability of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) on antenatal care use and facility delivery in 63 low- and middle-income countries. Service utilization is positively associated with increased autonomy and negatively associated with increased acceptability of IPVAW, but variability exists across countries and regions. In …

Practice-Based Learning: Integrating Sgbv Screening Into Health Facilities In Refugee Contexts, Chi-Chi Undie, Josephine Ngebeh, Joanina Karugaba, Harriet Birungi, Michael Mbizvo
Reproductive Health
Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) “screening” refers to the standardized assessment of clients for SGBV incidents, regardless of reasons for presenting at a health facility. This practice has been shown to be feasible and effective in various countries and contexts in the East and Southern African region, resulting in proactive identification of female survivors, and their successful referrals for comprehensive SGBV care. In the last decade, health facilities in the region have been increasingly eager to incorporate such screening within the normal protocols of their health-care providers. In collaboration with the Population Council-led Africa Regional SGBV Network, the UNHCR East, …

An Initial Investigation Of The Role Of The Northeastern Alabama Plateaus In Modifying The Near-Storm Environment Of Potentially Tornadic Storms, Anthony Walter Lyza
Dissertations
The effects of terrain on tornadoes are poorly understood. Efforts to understand terrain effects on tornadoes have been limited in scope, typically examining a small number of cases with limited observations or idealized numerical simulations. One region where topography has been thought to potentially impact tornado frequency is along the Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain plateaus in northeastern Alabama. It has been suspected that storms often intensify and produce tornadoes upon reaching these plateaus, particularly Sand Mountain. The role of these plateaus in modifying the near-storm environment and storm evolution became a focus of the VORTEX-SE field campaign beginning in …
