Patriarchy, Cultural Prejudices And Spousal Violence In The Ancient City Of Benin Of Southern Nigeria, Oghoadena Clementina Osezua, Henry N. Agholor Sep 2019

Patriarchy, Cultural Prejudices And Spousal Violence In The Ancient City Of Benin Of Southern Nigeria, Oghoadena Clementina Osezua, Henry N. Agholor

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper examines the persistence of patriarchy and traditional cultural practices which have adverse effects on women’s rights and health as well as the growing incidence of spousal violence in Benin City, arising from obvious internal and external factors of social changes. Extant literature has documented shifts in family roles and general social transformations in many first world nations as a result of modernization. Efforts to capture such changes within the African space is very minimal as of now. This paper attempts to explore the Benin society of Southern Nigeria, against the backdrop of the cascading effects of human trafficking …

Japanese Gender Role Expectations And Attitudes: A Qualitative Analysis Of Gender Inequality, Melanie Belarmino, Melinda R. Roberts Sep 2019

Japanese Gender Role Expectations And Attitudes: A Qualitative Analysis Of Gender Inequality, Melanie Belarmino, Melinda R. Roberts

Journal of International Women's Studies

Due to current technology and the third wave feminist movement, gender inequality in other countries now has a global, socially aware platform. However, due to non-reporting, the voices of women experiencing violence and inequality in Japan are largely unheard. The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate the gender role expectations in Japan that lead to inequality and victimization inflicted on Japanese women. Data was obtained through interviews with all available and consenting bilingual speakers at a Japanese University, and findings reveal that there are very specific expectations for Japanese women in the home, at work, and in society. …

"We Neither Are Of The Past Nor Of The Future" : Analyzing The Two Opposing Aspects Of A Female Character Through Four Modern Works Of Persian Fiction", Ronak Karami Sep 2019

"We Neither Are Of The Past Nor Of The Future" : Analyzing The Two Opposing Aspects Of A Female Character Through Four Modern Works Of Persian Fiction", Ronak Karami

Journal of International Women's Studies

Under Iran’s growing contact with the West from 1925 until 1979, which caused cultural changes, modern writers were stuck between two realities: the vanishing culture of the past with its unified view of women and the modern Western-oriented culture of the present with its doubting, ironic, and fast-changing view of women. Both labels, the ‘ethereal’ (or inaccessible paragon) and the ‘whore’ (or accessible temptress) for female characters emerged in a major literary work of the 20th century in Iran, The Blind Owl (1937), by Hedayat due to these cultural changes. Furthermore, the labels appeared within some later modern Persian fictional …

Conceptualisation Of Honour Codes Amongst Turkish-Kurdish Mothers And Daughters Living In London, Ferya Tas-Cifci Sep 2019

Conceptualisation Of Honour Codes Amongst Turkish-Kurdish Mothers And Daughters Living In London, Ferya Tas-Cifci

Journal of International Women's Studies

The present study analyses how immigrant women transfer and preserve their traditional honour codes, and whether women from different generations (mothers and their daughters) adhere to the same codes. Focusing particularly on the Turkish-Kurdish community living in London , the study asks, ‘How traditional honour codes are conceptualised and transferred by the women of the Turkish-Kurdish community and whether mothers and daughters share the same opinion about them.’ In a traditional society it is considered to be mothers’ duty to ensure that their culture and traditions, and particularly honour codes, are transferred and taught to their children, especially to their …

Addressing Violence Against Women From Critical Feminist Perspectives: Challenging The Politicization Of Violence Against Women, Gwen Hunnicutt Sep 2019

Addressing Violence Against Women From Critical Feminist Perspectives: Challenging The Politicization Of Violence Against Women, Gwen Hunnicutt

Journal of International Women's Studies

A major accomplishment of women’s rights scholars and activists has been to make violence against women (VAW) visible. After decades of struggle, in a dramatic turn, VAW has become a highly politicized topic since the mid 1990’s, and even more so after 9/11. An unfortunate side-effect of the increased recognition of harm done to women is that the issue of VAW is sometimes co-opted by the state and used in service of their political projects. In this paper I present the political co-optation of VAW as one of the pressing challenges facing scholars who conduct research on the problem of …

The Co-Existence Of Laws Regarding Domestic Violence Case Settlement: Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, Ratih Lestarini, Herdis Herdiansyah, Tirtawening Tirtawening, Dianwidhi Michelle Pranoto Sep 2019

The Co-Existence Of Laws Regarding Domestic Violence Case Settlement: Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, Ratih Lestarini, Herdis Herdiansyah, Tirtawening Tirtawening, Dianwidhi Michelle Pranoto

Journal of International Women's Studies

Domestic violence has long been an adversity, which many women have to endure and even accept, especially in places where patriarchy reigns. Unlike other forms of violence against women, domestic violence is particularly special because of its private and sensitive nature. In the island of Rote in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, domestic violence is a serious social and cultural issue. People in Rote continue to practice their customary laws despite formal state laws that offer better justice for victims, at least from the perspective of women’s rights and feminism. This article elaborates on customary laws used to settle domestic violence …

Public Feminism, Female Shame, And Sexual Violence In Modern Egypt, Jihan Zakarriya Sep 2019

Public Feminism, Female Shame, And Sexual Violence In Modern Egypt, Jihan Zakarriya

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper examines the interconnections between public sexual violence, female shame, and public feminism in modern Egypt. It connects aspects of public sexual violence against women generally and politicized sexual violence in 21st-century Egypt in particular, arguing that successive political regimes in Egypt produce and maintain a spatial culture of humiliation and inferiorization as a political tool of silencing, and oppressing women and opposition. This culture of humiliation and inferiorization is premised upon media-oriented female shame ideas that relate and condemn female sexuality and public participation, establishing the public space as militarized, dangerous and exclusive. This paper attempts to assess …

Scientific Consensus On Whether Lgbtq Parents Are More Likely (Or Not) To Have Lgbtq Children: An Analysis Of 72 Social Science Reviews Of The Literature Published Between 2001 And 2017, Walter Schumm, Duane Crawford Sep 2019

Scientific Consensus On Whether Lgbtq Parents Are More Likely (Or Not) To Have Lgbtq Children: An Analysis Of 72 Social Science Reviews Of The Literature Published Between 2001 And 2017, Walter Schumm, Duane Crawford

Journal of International Women's Studies

Until the 1950’s, it was widely assumed that homosexuality was a pathological condition. Even after leading social science organizations rejected that assumption in the early 1970’s, many believed that LGBTQ parents would not be able to parent as well as heterosexual parents. Further social science research has generally rejected the latter assumption as well. Using a complex citation network method of assessing scientific consensus, Adams and Light (2015) concluded that consensus on same-sex or LGBTQ parenting had been achieved by the late 1990’s and that the consensus formed was that children’s outcomes were no different than for children of heterosexual …

Domestic Trauma And Imperial Pessimism: The Crisis At Home In Charles Dickens’S Dombey And Son, Katherine E. Ostdiek Sep 2019

Domestic Trauma And Imperial Pessimism: The Crisis At Home In Charles Dickens’S Dombey And Son, Katherine E. Ostdiek

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In “Domestic Trauma and Imperial Pessimism: The Crisis At Home in Charles Dickens’s Dombey and Son,” Katherine Ostdiek discusses Dickens’s representation of violence, grief, and recovery within the Victorian home as a pre-Freudian example of trauma. This comparison not only demonstrates the importance of trauma studies in the nineteenth-century, but more importantly, it thematically focuses empathy for the traumatized on the home. In this novel, Dickens dismisses topics related to the financial and social crises of mid-century Britain in favor of domestic themes that emphasize an idealized structure of the Victorian family. Through her use of trauma theory and …

The Different Representation Of Suffering In The Two Versions Of The Vegetarian, Young-Hyun Lee Sep 2019

The Different Representation Of Suffering In The Two Versions Of The Vegetarian, Young-Hyun Lee

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article “The Different Representation of Suffering in the two versions of The Vegetarian” the author examines how different the representation of suffering in the original and translated versions of The Vegetarian and explores the reasons for this difference. The author in particular refers to representative episodes which the translator’s strategy distorts even the central concepts of suffering in the original work. Her translated version results in critical misrepresentation of suffering and violence in the original version.

Narrating Animal Suffering In Ye Guangqin’S Animal Stories, Chao Xie Sep 2019

Narrating Animal Suffering In Ye Guangqin’S Animal Stories, Chao Xie

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article “Narrating Animal Suffering in Ye Guangqin’s Animal Stories,” Chao Xie analyzes animal suffering depicted in the contemporary Chinese writer Ye Guangqin’s animal story collection The Tiger Dafu (2004). Through reading the interconnected suffering of animals and humans represented in Ye’s works, Xie argues that Ye expresses an attitude of posthumanism which is needed to examine animal suffering. The shared victimhood between animals and humans in Ye’s works, which is largely due to the process of Chinese modernization, provides a new insight into the idea of the Anthropocene.

How Right-Wing Authoritarianism Mediates The Relationship Between Protestant Religious Denomination And Attitudes Towards Homosexuality, Jakob P. Mcgowen Sep 2019

How Right-Wing Authoritarianism Mediates The Relationship Between Protestant Religious Denomination And Attitudes Towards Homosexuality, Jakob P. Mcgowen

Student Theses and Dissertations

Few studies have looked at the relationships between Protestant religious denominations, people’s attitudes towards homosexuality, and right-wing authoritarianism (RWA). Even fewer studies have investigated newer multidimensional measures of RWA. The present study investigated if the individual components of RWA mediates the relationship between Protestant religious denomination membership and attitudes towards homosexuality. The results found the Traditionalism subscale of RWA mediated the relationship between Protestant religious denomination membership and attitudes towards homosexuality. Therefore, when measuring RWA it is psychometrically better to use a multidimensional scale. Other findings and future directions are discussed.

The Future Of Cybercrime Prevention Strategies: Human Factors And A Holistic Approach To Cyber Intelligence, Sinchul Back, Jennifer Laprade Sep 2019

The Future Of Cybercrime Prevention Strategies: Human Factors And A Holistic Approach To Cyber Intelligence, Sinchul Back, Jennifer Laprade

International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime

New technology is rapidly emerging to fight increasing cybercrime threats, however, there is one important component of a cybercrime that technology cannot always impact and that is human behavior. Unfortunately, humans can be vulnerable and easily deceived making technological advances alone inadequate in the cybercrime fight. Instead, we must take a more holistic approach by using technology and better understanding the human factors that make cybercrime possible. In this issue of the International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence and Cybercrime, three studies contribute to our knowledge of human factors and emerging cybercrime technology so that more effective comprehensive cybercrime prevention strategies …

A Test Of Structural Model For Fear Of Crime In Social Networking Sites, Seong-Sik Lee, Kyung-Shick Choi, Sinyong Choi, Elizabeth Englander Sep 2019

A Test Of Structural Model For Fear Of Crime In Social Networking Sites, Seong-Sik Lee, Kyung-Shick Choi, Sinyong Choi, Elizabeth Englander

International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime

This study constructed a structural model which consists of social demographic factors, experience of victimization, opportunity factors, and social context factors to explain the public’s fear of crime on social networking sites (SNS). The model is based on the risk interpretation model, which predicts that these factors influence users’ fear of crime victimization. Using data from 486 university students in South Korea, an empirically-tested model suggests that sex and age have direct and significant effects on fear of victimization, supporting the vulnerability hypothesis. Among opportunity factors, the level of personal information and the number of offending peers have significant effects …

An Exploratory Perception Analysis Of Consensual And Nonconsensual Image Sharing, Jin Ree Lee, Steven Downing Sep 2019

An Exploratory Perception Analysis Of Consensual And Nonconsensual Image Sharing, Jin Ree Lee, Steven Downing

International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime

Limited research has considered individual perceptions of moral distinctions between consensual and nonconsensual intimate image sharing, as well as decision making parameters around why others might engage in such behavior. The current study conducted a perception analysis using mixed-methods online surveys administered to 63 participants, inquiring into their perceptions of why individuals engage in certain behaviors surrounding the sending of intimate images from friends and partners. The study found that respondents favored the concepts of (1) sharing images with romantic partners over peers; (2) sharing non-intimate images over intimate images; and (3) sharing images with consent rather than without it. …

Blockchain Security: Situational Crime Prevention Theory And Distributed Cyber Systems, Nicholas J. Blasco, Nicholas A. Fett Sep 2019

Blockchain Security: Situational Crime Prevention Theory And Distributed Cyber Systems, Nicholas J. Blasco, Nicholas A. Fett

International Journal of Cybersecurity Intelligence & Cybercrime

The authors laid the groundwork for analyzing the crypto-economic incentives of interconnected blockchain networks and utilize situational crime prevention theory to explain how more secure systems can be developed. Blockchain networks utilize smaller blockchains (often called sidechains) to increase throughput in larger networks. Identified are several disadvantages to using sidechains that create critical exposures to the assets locked on them. Without security being provided by the mainchain in the form of validated exits, sidechains or statechannels which have a bridge or mainchain asset representations are at significant risk of attack. The inability to have a sufficiently high cost to attack …

Defamation, Privacy And Aspects Of Reputation, Andrew T. Kenyon Sep 2019

Defamation, Privacy And Aspects Of Reputation, Andrew T. Kenyon

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Unlike the commonplace statement that defamation law protects reputation, this article suggests that it only protects aspects of reputation. Previously, defamation was often the only avenue of legal protection for reputation worth examining, but now privacy actions also offer an avenue of protection for aspects of reputation in many jurisdictions. In other words, informational privacy law now protects aspects of reputation, as does defamation law. Recognizing this fact leads to the suggestion that exactly what each action—defamation and informational privacy—seeks to protect could be stated more concisely. This exercise, undertaken in this article, draws on classic defamation law analysis by …

Book Review: Human Rights In Global Health: Rights-Based Governance For A Globalizing World, Edited By Benjamin M. Meier & Lawrence O. Gostin, Regiane Garcia, Kristi Heather Kenyon

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This groundbreaking compilation—edited by two scholars who helped to establish the “health and human rights” field—systematically explores the structures and processes of human rights implementation in global health institutions, arguing that a rights-based approach to health governance advances global health. This 640-page volume brings together forty-six experienced scholars and practitioners who have contributed to twenty-five chapters organized into six thematic sections. This “unprecedented collection of experts” provides unique, hands-on insights into how the “institutional determinants of the rights-based approach to health” facilitate—or hinder—the “mainstreaming” of human rights into global health interventions. The “institutional determinants,” which, in the contributors’ view, promote …

Intersectionality Pedagogy In The Classroom: Experiences Of Counselor Educators, Jenae D. Thompson, Corinne W. Bridges Sep 2019

Intersectionality Pedagogy In The Classroom: Experiences Of Counselor Educators, Jenae D. Thompson, Corinne W. Bridges

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

The role of intersectionality in counselor education and supervision has not been formally addressed by researchers in the preparation of counselors in training. Traditional ways of teaching multicultural and diversity issues in counseling include compartmentalized discussions about social identities, but do not incorporate intersectionality despite its significance in describing how individuals move through the world. The method of inquiry used to collect and analyze data was heuristic in nature due to the focus on contextual experiences of the participants as well as the researcher. The results showed how seven CES faculty members’ personal and professional experiences influenced their incorporation of …

Social Justice Advocacy Training: An Innovative Certificate Program For Counselor Education, Katherine A. Feather, Tiffany M. Bordonada, Kimberly A. Nelson, Kathy M. Evans Ph.D

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

The authors outline an innovative certificate program that promotes the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC; Ratts, Singh, Massar-McMillan, Butler, & McCullough, 2015) and how counselor education programs can commit to a social justice approach. In addition, the authors provide a detailed summary of the certificate program that requires counselors-in-training to move beyond a multicultural understanding of diverse cultural worldviews so that they commit to becoming social change agents and take action on issues of equality and justice. Limitations and implications for counselor educators are presented.

A Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences Of Master’S Level Students Of Color In Counseling Programs, Melanie Varney, Catherine Y. Chang, Rafe Mccullough, Mary Huffstead, Jennifer Smith

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

This qualitative study investigated the training experiences of 12 students of color in CACREP-accredited master’s level counseling programs using semi-structured phenomenological interviews. The 12 participants identified as Asian American (n = 2), Japanese American (n = 1), Chinese (n = 1), Black (n = 1), African American (n = 1), Latino and/or Hispanic (n = 3), and multiracial (n = 3). We used interpretive phenomenological analysis and identified three main themes: cultural marginalization; biculturalism; and safe or counter-hegemonic relationships. Training implications for counselor education programs are provided.
