Women’S Political Participation And Grassroots Democratic Sustainability In Osun State, Nigeria (2010-2015), Isola Abidemi Abiola

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

Studies on Osun State and women's representation in both the federal and state levels and in the legislative and executive arms of government indicated it has the second highest women's representation in South West, Nigeria. This gives an impression that democracy is being sustained at the grassroots. However, the fact on the ground is to the contrary, especially when compared with their male counterparts and their representation in government. Therefore, this study explores women's political participation and grassroots democratic sustainability in Osun State, Nigeria from 1999 to 2015.This study adopted survey research design. Data were collected through questionnaires and unstructured …

Influence Of The Economy On Teen And Adult Birth Patterns In Oklahoma 1980 Through 1995: A Time Series Analysis, Sandra Kay Cesario Sep 2019

Influence Of The Economy On Teen And Adult Birth Patterns In Oklahoma 1980 Through 1995: A Time Series Analysis, Sandra Kay Cesario

Dissertations

Influence of the economy on birth patterns was examined separately for teen and adult women. Competing theories and conceptual frameworks currently exist to describe the cyclic patterns found in reproductive behavior and their relationships to economic condition. Pro-cyclic models suggest a lagged positive association between economic conditions and numbers of births whereas counter-cyclic models indicate that a negative or inverse relationship exists. Three distinct problems were addressed in this study. First, the competing economic models was addressed. Second, this study of daily and weekly births to allow greater sensitivity in testing the relationship of an economic variable number and timing …

Parenting A Lone Twin: When One Twin Dies, Kelly L. Grady Sep 2019

Parenting A Lone Twin: When One Twin Dies, Kelly L. Grady

Dissertations

Parents who simultaneously grieve the loss of one twin and nurture the surviving twin experience a paradox of grief and joy. The acute grief of losing a twin coincides with a critical time in the development of the parental role and relationship with the surviving twin. Very few researchers have addressed the unique parenting situation in which one twin infant dies. The aim of this qualitative descriptive study was to describe the experience of parents who lose one twin in utero, at birth, or in the neonatal period. The study question was "What is the parenting experience of mothers and …

The Influence Of Age At Migration On Criminal Offending Among Foreign-Born Immigrants, Omar Melchor-Ayala Sep 2019

The Influence Of Age At Migration On Criminal Offending Among Foreign-Born Immigrants, Omar Melchor-Ayala

Dissertations and Theses

Domestic and international events -- such as the recent migrant caravans from Central and South America, and the records number of migrant children detained at the border -- have brought renewed attention to the adaptation of immigrants in the United States. More specifically, questions regarding whether the population of immigrants is driving the "crime problem," have taken center stage. Immigrants vary significantly in terms of when they migrate into the country. According to the Current Population Survey (CPS), the population of approximately 12 million foreign-born immigrant children living in the United States is split in terms of their age and …

From Parent To Child, Writer To Reader: Tracing Cultural Inheritance In Contemporary Black Memoir, Nicole Jacobsen Sep 2019

From Parent To Child, Writer To Reader: Tracing Cultural Inheritance In Contemporary Black Memoir, Nicole Jacobsen

BYU English Symposium

Recent examples of black memoir include patterns of cultural inheritance. In an autobiographical extended essay written as if a letter to his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates quite clearly positions himself as both heir and father, passing on an inheritance through the writing of Between the World and Me. As she writes Ordinary Light in the wake of her mother’s death, Tracy K. Smith tackles the complex gifts and burdens left to her by her beloved parent. In Negroland, cultural critic Margo Jefferson reflects on a racial past whose rules and expectations were clearly laid out for her by her …
