Poverty Simulations For Human Services Professionals: Impacts And Implications, Jeong-Kyun Choi, Dan Wang, Euwanda Jennings, Ruth Vonderohe
Poverty Simulations For Human Services Professionals: Impacts And Implications, Jeong-Kyun Choi, Dan Wang, Euwanda Jennings, Ruth Vonderohe
Journal of Extension
We examined the program outcomes of a poverty simulation offered by Nebraska Extension. Using qualitative and quantitative data sets collected from 582 participants, we investigated their emotional, attitudinal, and learning outcomes. The overall findings suggest that poverty simulations can enable participants to empathize with people living in poverty, reduce their misconceptions about people living in poverty and about governmental support, and improve their awareness of financial hardship, economic difficulties, government programs, and community resources. We provide recommendations for poverty simulation implementation, such as more rigorous use of orientation, group discussion, and community resources.
The Life Of Donald Mcgavran: Growing Stronger, Gary L. Mcintosh
The Life Of Donald Mcgavran: Growing Stronger, Gary L. Mcintosh
Great Commission Research Journal
The 1980s were the major growth years of the Church Growth Movement in the USA. Win Arn’s Institute for American Church Growth reached its zenith, and the School of World Mission at Fuller continued to promote Church Growth thinking. Peter Wagner gradually took over the primary role as professor of church growth, as McGavran reduced his teaching load. The issue of what is the primary goal of mission—social justice or evangelism—continued to be one of McGavran’s major concerns.

Cognitive And Social Interaction Analysis In Graduate Discussion Forums, Mallika Gokarn Nitin, Swapna Gottipati, Venky Shankararaman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Discussion forums play a key role in building knowledge repositories in an education institute. Asynchronous discussion forums enable part-time graduate professionals to have a better learning experience. This paper reports how a carefully curated discussion forum enhances the cognitive and social interactions among students in a graduate information systems course. In particular, we analyse the cognitive and social interactions and their impact on the student grades. To our surprise, the graduate students with their limited time resources, have higher order cognitive contributions and reasonable amount of social posts. We present the discussion forum design, cognitive and social behaviour analysis, grade …

How Do Welcome Statements Differ From Mission Statements?: The Salience Of Genre, David Ayers, Wanda Brooks
How Do Welcome Statements Differ From Mission Statements?: The Salience Of Genre, David Ayers, Wanda Brooks
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
In this analysis, we sought to identify key linguistic properties of mission statements and to explain how these properties function toward managerial purposes. Data included a target corpus of 920 community college mission statements (47,943 words), a domain-specific corpus of 632 “welcome statements” published on websites by community college presidents (173,534 words), and a general reference corpus extracted from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (16.53 million words) (Davies, 2017). We used specialized corpus linguistics software to generate standardized word frequencies and to tag each corpus for parts of speech. We then identified the words and parts of speech that …
Innovating Authentically: Cultural Differentiation In The Animation Sector, Susan Standing, Craig Standing
Innovating Authentically: Cultural Differentiation In The Animation Sector, Susan Standing, Craig Standing
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper examines the concept of authentic innovation and the development of the animation industry in Malaysia. Authenticity is a concept that has been investigated from philosophical and institutional perspectives in the quest to explain the role of self-fulfillment and decision-making. It links with systems thinking because authenticity as a strategy requires a holistic approach since it is based upon values that influence action. The desire for authenticity can create expression outside the norms and produce innovation. We present interpretations of authenticity, explain the concept of authentic innovation and relate this to three case studies of Malaysian animation studios. We …

Towards A Less Essentialist, More Intersectional, And Institutional Approach To Gender And Judging, Sally J. Kenney
Towards A Less Essentialist, More Intersectional, And Institutional Approach To Gender And Judging, Sally J. Kenney
Connecticut Journal of International Law
The convictions that it profoundly matters who judges are, what they believe about the world, and what their approach to law and judging is motivates my work. My work as a scholar of comparative pregnancy discrimination, the European Court of Justice, judicial selection, gender and judging, sexual assault, and now mass incarceration further strengthens that position; as does my professional service helping to establish a collaborative research network on Gender and Judging of more than 140 scholars from more than 17 countries.1 The resolute position that who judges are matters informs my activism ranging from working on civil rights oversight …

United In Diversity? Gender And Judging At The Court Of Justice Of The European Union (Cjeu), Konstantinos Alexandris Polomarkakis
Connecticut Journal of International Law
Undoubtedly, the European Union (EU) has made efforts to promote gender equality over the years, albeit with various levels of success.2 Since the 1950's and the foundational Treaty of Rome, the principle of equal pay for equal work was ringfenced therein.3 More than half a century-and several reforms, policies, strategies and decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU)-later, someone would have expected a gender-equal EU, but statistics show there is still a long way to go. According to the latest Gender Equality Index, the overall score across the EU increased only by a meager 4.2% in …
Why Women? Judging Transnational Courts And Tribunals, Kathryn M. Stanchi, Bridget J. Crawford, Linda L. Berger
Why Women? Judging Transnational Courts And Tribunals, Kathryn M. Stanchi, Bridget J. Crawford, Linda L. Berger
Connecticut Journal of International Law
At the 2019 Association of American Law Schools ("AALS") Annual Meeting, the panel on Judicial Diversity in Transnational Courts asked, "Why do so few women serve on transnational courts and tribunals?"1 That line of feminist inquiry has a long tradition. As Catharine MacKinnon observed, "Feminists have this nasty habit of counting bodies and refusing not to notice their gender." 2 Underlying the panel's organizing question-and indeed much of feminist jurisprudence-is the belief that the presence (or absence) of women has consequences in almost any context. Based on personal and professional experience, we share this foundational assumption, though we note that …
The Myth Of Enforcing Border Security Versus The Reality Of Enforcing Dominant Masculinities, Jamie Abrams
The Myth Of Enforcing Border Security Versus The Reality Of Enforcing Dominant Masculinities, Jamie Abrams
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
This essay explores the masculinities underpinnings in modern immigration law, policy, and rhetoric. Existing analysis has captured the ways in which Trump-era immigration laws, policies, and rhetoric are explicitly and implicitly packaged in alarming racism and xenophobia. These critical lenses continue a long and deeply worrisome legacy of “othering” and dehumanizing immigrants and, more broadly, marginalizing communities of color in the United States.
Outside of the immigration law lens, separate strands of scholarship and media coverage have highlighted the toxic masculinities of the Trump era. These discussions have generally focused on President Trump’s treatment of women, the gendered campaign dynamics …

Objectives. To test the efficacy of Me & You, a multilevel technology-enhanced adolescent dating violence (DV) intervention, in reducing DV perpetration and victimization among ethnic-minority early adolescent youths. We assessed secondary impact for specific DV types and psychosocial outcomes.
Methods. We conducted a group-randomized controlled trial of 10 middle schools from a large urban school district in Southeast Texas in 2014 to 2015. We used multilevel regression modeling; the final analytic sample comprised 709 sixth-grade students followed for 1 year.
Results. Among the total sample, odds of DV perpetration were lower among intervention students than among control students (adjusted odds …

Making Evangelicals Great Again? American Evangelicals In The Age Of Trump, Brantley W. Gasaway
Faculty Journal Articles
This article analyzes the ways in which American evangelical Christians have responded to the presidential campaign and presidential administration of Donald Trump, with a particular focus on the faction of politically progressive evangelicals. While over 80% of white evangelicals voted for Trump and over 70% continue to support his presidency, progressive evangelicals have vociferously opposed him. This article summarizes the proposals, protests, and petitions of progressive evangelicals with respect to four broad issues: racial justice, immigration, healthcare, and economic policies. Though some conservative and moderate evangelicals have also criticized Trump’s personal behavior and politics, numerous factors hinder their potential partnerships …
Economic Provenance: The Financial Analysis Of Art Historical Records, Amy C. Whitaker
Economic Provenance: The Financial Analysis Of Art Historical Records, Amy C. Whitaker
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
The Leo Castelli Gallery launched pivotal mid-twentieth-century artistic careers, including those of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Although well-studied for its artistic impact, the Castelli archives—as well as those of other gallery artists such as Frank Stella and early collectors such as Burton and Emily Hall Tremaine—include a curious trove of artists’ financial records and related correspondence. This paper argues that these records form an “economic provenance” that is important both to both art market analysis and art history. This economic context is sometimes overlooked because of the contested relationship between art and markets. In this context, the archive can …

Occupation: Neoliberalism’S Role In Palestinian Apartheid, Devyn Johnson
Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict remains one of the most contentious political topics in our world today. Although violence has been spewed from both sides, imbalance is demonstrated in power structures used to maintain occupation by the state of Israel. Using the concept of Neoliberalism, this paper seeks to explain the motives behind state political and economic practices that subdue the Palestinian public and control the narrative of its actions. As attributes of neoliberalism such as privatization, wealth inequality, and security are considered acceptable by society, this paper also examines how injustices that exist under these attributes are ignored or denied, and …

Writing In The Health Sciences: A Collection Of Exemplary Student Writing Spring 2019, Valparaiso University, Valparaiso University Writing Program

"The narratives that appear beyond this foreword, plus one modest literature review, one integrative study, and one healthcare guideline analysis, were written last spring by students from the College of Nursing and Health Professions in sections of English 205. English 205 is a writing-intensive course offered by the English department, listed in the catalog as “Writing in the Health Professions.” As titles go, that’s pretty bland, for a course or for a collection of writing. Writing in the health professions is anything but bland, as you’ll find out if you read any of the work in this collection. Health professionals …
