Disability And Migration: How Systems Of Violence Intersect With The Production And Experience Of Disability For Migrants In Morocco, Frances Condon Oct 2019

Disability And Migration: How Systems Of Violence Intersect With The Production And Experience Of Disability For Migrants In Morocco, Frances Condon

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project investigates the perspectives and experiences of physically disabled, chronically ill, or bodily-impaired migrants from south of the Sahara living in Rabat, Morocco. Increasing interest in disabled migrants’ rights from international organizations risks erasing those being ‘protected’ if it does not attend to the intersections of race, class, citizenship, and gender as they relate to the production and experience of disability for migrants. Produced by and for the (white) global North, I argue that traditional Euro-American disability studies scholarship is ill-equipped to address the issues faced by disabled migrants in post-colonial contexts. In addition to being ineffective, the uncritical …

Not-So-Decriminalized: Consequences Of Intersectional Identity For Migrant Sex Workers In Switzerland, Teagan Langseth-Depaolis Oct 2019

Not-So-Decriminalized: Consequences Of Intersectional Identity For Migrant Sex Workers In Switzerland, Teagan Langseth-Depaolis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Sex work in Switzerland, which was decriminalized long ago, has been regarded as one of the most liberal systems of sex work in the world. However, this reputation is contested when factoring in the interaction between immigration and sex work policies. Migrant sex workers in Switzerland are put at a precarious intersection of decriminalized sex industry and restrictive migration policy and attitudes, and are not addressed or protected from violations of the law or violations of their human rights. Using databases containing Swiss legislation, I will critically examine the intersectional effects of migration policy and the treatment of migrants on …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Assessing The Efficacy Of The Bayh-Dole Act Through The Lens Of University Technology Transfer Offices (Ttos), David Orozco Oct 2019

Assessing The Efficacy Of The Bayh-Dole Act Through The Lens Of University Technology Transfer Offices (Ttos), David Orozco

North Carolina Journal of Law & Technology

Universities are unique environments that thrive on the research and curiosity of faculty and students. To disseminate knowledge and potentially derive lucrative sources of funding, universities have aggressively entered the field of technology commercialization and patenting. The passage of the Bayh-Dole Act was instrumental to encourage this activity and the result has been an explosion of university-related patenting. This activity comes at a social cost, however, since patents restrict knowledge transfers and may create deadweight losses. These costs are amplified if technology transfer office (TTO) activities are viewed from a narrow financial or cost-benefit viewpoint. As demonstrated in this study, …

“Can I Be Something More Than The Worst Thing I Had Ever Done?”: The Difficulties Of Reentry After Incarceration In Kentucky, Larissa Dm Heslop

Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on the difficulties that people face upon reentry after incarceration in Kentucky. An ethnographic background was used to understand the current situation of incarceration and reentry in Kentucky. Mass incarceration, Kentucky incarcerated population demographics, high costs of incarceration, and Kentucky politics on incarceration are covered in the ethnographic background. A literature review was used to give context to difficulties that people face such as clothing, disenfranchisement, education, employment, family relations and social support, housing, transportation and basic needs, mental health, religion, and stigma. Ethnographic research methods, which consisted of semi-structured interviews and participant observation, were used to …

Improving Sexual Health Efficacy: A Qualitative Study Of Female College Students’ Experience With Sexual Health Education And Subsequent Capacity For Application, Naomi Elizabeth Cheek Oct 2019

Improving Sexual Health Efficacy: A Qualitative Study Of Female College Students’ Experience With Sexual Health Education And Subsequent Capacity For Application, Naomi Elizabeth Cheek

Honors Theses

Issues such as sexual assault, high rates of sexually transmitted infections, and high teen pregnancy rates are downstream effects of poor sex education. The current study examined the question, “In what ways do a person’s background in sex education, including family, school, and social learning, impact current efficacy and knowledge regarding sexual health?” Specifically, this study looked at the educational experiences of female college students at Eastern Kentucky University through semi-structured qualitative interviews. After signing an EKU IRB approved informed consent document, audio recorded interviews were conducted. All audio interviews were transcribed and then analyzed using thematic analysis to find …

The Weight Of Invisibility: The Effects Of Child Brokering On Sibling Relationships, Andrea Patino

Honors Theses

This research serves to explore the definition of a child broker and the effects that such title can have on children. The research identifies the different aspects that child brokering affects the way the children interact with their families and form relationships. It focuses on the aspects that children may have difficulties with when growing up and what their ways of coping encompass. The primary research was conducted to explore the relationships that children develop with their siblings and how these may be affected by the child’s responsibilities and feelings. The focus on sibling relationships discusses an aspect of child …

Life Between Nations: Third Culture Kids, Helen C. Neely Oct 2019

Life Between Nations: Third Culture Kids, Helen C. Neely

Honors Theses

“Third Culture Kids” (TCKs) spend several years of their childhood living in a different culture than the one their parents grew up in. Each TCK has a different experience, from location to number of moves to years spent abroad, but TCKs tend to share a unique bond, one that can only form from an understanding of what it is like to grow up between nations. Research and observations of TCKs began in the 60’s but the modern understanding of what a third culture kid is has been formed in the past 20 or so years. While there is abundant research …

"A Miss Is As Good As A Mile": Examining Social Distance As A Predictor Of Academic Performance In Kentucky, Anna K. Davidson Oct 2019

"A Miss Is As Good As A Mile": Examining Social Distance As A Predictor Of Academic Performance In Kentucky, Anna K. Davidson

Honors Theses

This paper examines social distance and how it relates to academic performance for students in Kentucky high schools. To perform this examination, I ran a series of bivariate regressions of student performance scores and differing variables that account for social distance such as race and/or ethnicity, socioeconomic status, types of classes offered in a school, and, primarily, location of the school. Results showed that as the number of students of color enrolled at a school increases, the gap in performance between groups of traditionally underserved students and non-underserved students increases. This gap also increases as more students are enrolled in …

The Impact Of Anti-Opioid Print Messages On High-Sensation-Seeking Personalities And Behaviors: A Comparative Study Of Public Service Announcements And Research, Allison B. Gordon Oct 2019

The Impact Of Anti-Opioid Print Messages On High-Sensation-Seeking Personalities And Behaviors: A Comparative Study Of Public Service Announcements And Research, Allison B. Gordon

Honors Theses

The rate of opioid overdose deaths has dramatically increased over the past several years. Efforts to reach users to describe the negative consequences of use appear to have little effect on users. This research seeks to understand how mass media messages, specifically printed public service announcements (PSAs), can reverse the upward trend of opioid use by targeting the attitudes and motivations of high-sensation-seekers. The hypothesis suggests a positive correlation between some advertisements and expressed intention to avoid trying or using opioids. Samples included students at Eastern Kentucky University in the Nursing, Psychology, and Sociology departments in addition to accredited, professional …

Preventing Skin Exposure To Pesticides Among Apple Growers And Factors Influencing Use Of Protective Clothing, Danièle Champoux, Caroline Jolly, Sylvie Beaugrand, Ludovic Tuduri

H-2a Temporary Agricultural Workers On Small Farms: Case Study Observations And Lessons Learned, Barrett Vaughan, Lerosha Ford, Silvia Brashier, Miles Robinson

Professional Agricultural Workers Journal

Abstract

The experiences of two small farmers in their efforts to employ and retain temporary agricultural workers through the H-2A Program were documented through an illustrative case study. Interviews of the farmers were conducted regarding the measures that they had to take in preparing for, employing, housing, hosting, managing, and financing the workers. These temporary agricultural workers were sought in support of these farmers’ continued participation in an initiative to assist small and limited-resource farmers in supplying produce to a major retailer. It was concluded that there are at least four priority areas for employing H-2A workers: planning, applying, maintaining …

Cultivating Moral Imagination Through Deliberative Pedagogy: Reframing Immigration Deliberation For Student Engagement Across Differences. A Response To "Deliberating Public Policy Issues With Adolescents: Classroom Dynamics And Sociocultural Considerations", Lisa Weasel

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

In “Deliberating Public Policy Issues with Adolescents,” the authors described what they determine to be an unsuccessful attempt at deliberative pedagogy on the topic of immigration in three high school classrooms that differed demographically. Specifically, the authors observed that students failed to engage with evidence, stuck with their initial viewpoints, and only listened politely to those with different views, rather than interacting across differences to reach consensus. While student positionality, as the authors suggest, is important to take into account, there may be ways to reorient deliberations on “wicked problems” such as immigration, which are by their nature prone to …

Statutory Realism: The Jurisprudential Ambivalence Of Interpretive Theory, Abigail R. Moncrieff Oct 2019

Statutory Realism: The Jurisprudential Ambivalence Of Interpretive Theory, Abigail R. Moncrieff

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

In the renaissance of statutory interpretation theory, a division has emerged between "new purposivists," who argue that statutes should be interpreted dynamically, and "new textualists," who argue that statutes should be interpreted according to their ordinary semantic meanings. Both camps, however, rest their theories on jurisprudentially ambivalent commitments. Purposivists are jurisprudential realists when they make arguments about statutory meaning, but they are jurisprudential formalists in their views of the judicial power to engage in dynamic interpretation. Textualists are the inverse; they are formalistic in their understandings of statutory meaning but realistic in their arguments about judicial power. The relative triumph …
