October 2019, mass mobilizations erupted across Chile in a widespread rebellion against the neoliberal system of economic austerity and the current government. In such a powerful historical moment undoubtedly decisive for the direction of the country, this paper seeks to examine how student participants, an increasingly strong voice of radical dissidence in recent years of social movements, imagine a better Chile. Engaging with classic and contemporary theories of social movements, this paper analyzes the methods of organization and action utilized by the protesters and how they are influenced by institutional structures and the political opportunities available. Through interviews and the …

The Cultural Tastes Of Bourgeois Pre-Adolescents In France: Cultural Omnivorousness As A New Form Of Cultural Capital, Scott Gunther Oct 2019

The Cultural Tastes Of Bourgeois Pre-Adolescents In France: Cultural Omnivorousness As A New Form Of Cultural Capital, Scott Gunther

Faculty Research and Scholarship

This is an ethnographic study of the reception of popular culture (music, films, and television) among bourgeois, Parisian children between the ages of 7 and 12. Pierre Bourdieu’s idea of social distinction has been used as a model to describe the tastes of the French bourgeoisie since the 1970s, though some sociologists, such as Joël Zaffran and Marie-Laure Pouchadon, have argued that its usefulness in recent decades has waned. In this article, I argue that the notion of social distinction is just as useful now as it was in the 1970s, but that based on the tastes of these young, …

As an instructional message design tool, controversy proliferates surrounding its role in the classroom experience and its impact on cognitive learning. After compiling the research, lessons can be garnered on how to best visually display PowerPoint slides, how to most effectively deliver PowerPoint-aided instruction, and how to maximize student learning from PowerPoint-based lessons. This chapter will explore the existing body of literature on the technology’s capabilities and limitations; offer best …

Influence Of Job-Dedicated Social Media On Employer Reputation, Serge P. Da Motta Veiga, Brent B. Clark, Timothy R. Moake

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

The popularity and value of social media sites has stretched beyond its initial social connection purposes; today, they represent critical tools for individual and firm visibility. This paper compares and contrasts institutional theory and signaling theory to investigate (1) whether having a job-dedicated page on social media sites (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter) is related to an organization’s employer reputation, and (2) whether it is merely the fact of having a job-dedicated social media page, or actually communicating (i.e. posting, tweeting, etc.) on that page that is related to an organization’s employer reputation. We used data collected from three major …

Doctorum Reciproco: Multi-Generational Professionals And Their Sentimentality Towards Reciprocity, Sal Villegas Oct 2019

Doctorum Reciproco: Multi-Generational Professionals And Their Sentimentality Towards Reciprocity, Sal Villegas

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

The use of professional reciprocity exchanges for economic prosperity has been a mainstay in American business culture within social networks such as associations, community organizations, etc. (Putnam, 2000). Participation in these organizations has declined over the past several decades, as new generations have declined embrace these stalwarts of social networking (Putnam, 2000). As the generational demographics of the American workforce have over time, it is now of great importance to identify if there are generational differences regarding the sentiment of reciprocity (Kolm, 1994) among professionals. This quantitative study uses a multi-part question from German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) study to …
