Cultivating Moral Imagination Through Deliberative Pedagogy: Reframing Immigration Deliberation For Student Engagement Across Differences. A Response To "Deliberating Public Policy Issues With Adolescents: Classroom Dynamics And Sociocultural Considerations", Lisa Weasel Oct 2019

Cultivating Moral Imagination Through Deliberative Pedagogy: Reframing Immigration Deliberation For Student Engagement Across Differences. A Response To "Deliberating Public Policy Issues With Adolescents: Classroom Dynamics And Sociocultural Considerations", Lisa Weasel

Democracy & Education

In “Deliberating Public Policy Issues with Adolescents,” the authors described what they determine to be an unsuccessful attempt at deliberative pedagogy on the topic of immigration in three high school classrooms that differed demographically. Specifically, the authors observed that students failed to engage with evidence, stuck with their initial viewpoints, and only listened politely to those with different views, rather than interacting across differences to reach consensus. While student positionality, as the authors suggest, is important to take into account, there may be ways to reorient deliberations on “wicked problems” such as immigration, which are by their nature prone to …

Valuing International Student Presence With A Global Curriculum: A Cosmopolitan Approach, Sheri Dion, Denise Desrosiers Oct 2019

Valuing International Student Presence With A Global Curriculum: A Cosmopolitan Approach, Sheri Dion, Denise Desrosiers

Democracy & Education

Against the backdrop of increasing political polarization and growing contention over ideological differences, U.S. colleges and universities are facing the daunting challenges of trying to prepare students for economic and personal engagement with a globalized world. Although many institutions admit students from other countries, they often overlook the opportunity to engage with the growing numbers of international students in their midst. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the discussion of how international student presence could be incorporated and valued by adopting a cosmopolitan approach in U.S. higher education. Recognizing that a cosmopolitan approach presents many educational challenges, …

Red States, Blue States, And Media Literacy: Political Context And Media Literacy, Kristal Curry, Todd S. Cherner

Democracy & Education

This paper examines the ways that political contexts affect the perceptions and practices of social studies preservice teachers (SSPSTs) being prepared in a conservative “Red State” compared to those being prepared in a liberal “Blue State.” The researchers analyzed how controversial the SSPSTs in each context considered the practice of teaching media literacy by exploring their beliefs about media literacy using a survey, analyzing practices related to media literacy through a targeted lesson plan assignment, and facilitating focus groups to member check emerging themes. Survey data indicated that both groups believed teaching media literacy skills was essential, but the assignment …

Faculty Perceptions Of Readiness To Implement Interprofessional Education In Athletic Training, Meredith M. Parry, Jennifer Jordan Utley, Sue Shapiro, Stefanie Podlog

Athletic Training Collection

PURPOSE As the athletic training profession advances, master’s degree accreditation standards aim to position athletic trainers as key players on interprofessional healthcare teams. Interprofessional education standards were recently introduced to academic leaders as key elements in the professional healthcare education of athletic trainers.

While the current standards reflect essential skills for entry-level clinicians, faculty instructing these elements may require additional development.

METHODS The objective of this study was to explore athletic training educators’ perceptions of interprofessional education and to examine perceived barriers related to the implementation of IPE in athletic training curricula. An electronic survey was administered to a stratified, …

Communication About Influenza Prevention: A Case Study Of Arkansas State University Students Health Center, Oyeronke Oyindamola Afolabi

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this case-study was to examine what and how the Arkansas State University Student Health Center (ASUSHC) communicates about influenza and influenza vaccination. To this end, the researcher conducted thematic analysis of social media posts and flyers disseminated by the ASUSCH on influenza and influenza vaccinations. ASUSHC provides an array of medical services including treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, physical exams, and immunizations. I adopted a reflective memoing in conducting a thematic analysis as recommended by Ryan and Branerd (2003). There were two research questions posed and four themes emerged from the first research question which are: …

Usable Science For Managing The Risks Of Sea-Level Rise, Robert E. Kopp, Elisabeth A. Gilmore, Christopher M. Little, Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba, Victoria C. Ramenzoni, William V. Sweet Oct 2019

Usable Science For Managing The Risks Of Sea-Level Rise, Robert E. Kopp, Elisabeth A. Gilmore, Christopher M. Little, Jorge Lorenzo-Trueba, Victoria C. Ramenzoni, William V. Sweet

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Sea-level rise sits at the frontier of usable climate climate change research, because it involves natural and human systems with long lags, irreversible losses, and deep uncertainty. For example, many of the measures to adapt to sea-level rise involve infrastructure and land-use decisions, which can have multigenerational lifetimes and will further influence responses in both natural and human systems. Thus, sea-level science has increasingly grappled with the implications of (1) deep uncertainty in future climate system projections, particularly of human emissions and ice sheet dynamics; (2) the overlay of slow trends and high-frequency variability (e.g., tides and storms) that give …

Reconciling Contemporary Approaches To School Attendance And School Absenteeism: Toward Promotion And Nimble Response, Global Policy Review And Implementation, And Future Adaptability (Part 1), Christopher A. Kearney, Carolina Gonzalvez, Patricia A. Graczyk, Mirae J. Fornander

Psychology Faculty Research

School attendance is an important foundational competency for children and adolescents, and school absenteeism has been linked to myriad short- and long-term negative consequences, even into adulthood. Many efforts have been made to conceptualize and address this population across various categories and dimensions of functioning and across multiple disciplines, resulting in both a rich literature base and a splintered view regarding this population. This article (Part 1 of 2) reviews and critiques key categorical and dimensional approaches to conceptualizing school attendance and school absenteeism, with an eye toward reconciling these approaches (Part 2 of 2) to develop a roadmap for …

Ofelia García: A Transformative Thinker And Leader, Cecilia M. Espinosa Oct 2019

Ofelia García: A Transformative Thinker And Leader, Cecilia M. Espinosa

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

In this essay, I describe the ways in which Ofelia García's work influenced the field of bilingual education and multilingualism, as well as my thinking over the years as a bilingual educator. Dr. García has been a model of what it means to be an intellectual who is deeply connected to the importance of engaging in transformative theoretical ideas. Her ideas, in turn, have proven to have profound implications for pedagogy that impacts the education of emergent bilinguals. Her work is deeply grounded in understandings about language and language development as it exists in the world. Her perspective is one …

This essay by Guadalupe Valdés reflects on the influence of Ofelia García on her own experiences and as well as on the field of bilingual education. As a reader, educator, and researcher concerning emergent bilingual children, the author shares many of the same challenges. She expresses her deep felt sense of gratitude for what Ofelia García has done for the profession, for teachers, and for children.

The Emergence Of Translanguaging Pedagogy: A Dialogue Between Theory And Practice, Jim Cummins Oct 2019

The Emergence Of Translanguaging Pedagogy: A Dialogue Between Theory And Practice, Jim Cummins

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

My goal in this paper is to contribute to the process of bringing practice and theory into active dialogue. Initially, I review some early instructional examples of crosslinguistic pedagogy involving emergent bilingual students. I then focus on more recent examples from the Canadian context that illustrate the emerging role of classroom teachers as knowledge-generators. Through their practice, these educators have challenged the assumption that schools serving multilingual students have no option but to be English-only zones. Finally, I explore some of the ways in which these instructional innovations illuminate theoretical understandings of translanguaging and crosslinguistic pedagogy more generally.

Minority Languages, National State Languages, And English In Europe: Multilingual Education In The Basque Country And Friesland, Jasone Cenoz, Durk Gorter Oct 2019

Minority Languages, National State Languages, And English In Europe: Multilingual Education In The Basque Country And Friesland, Jasone Cenoz, Durk Gorter

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

This article focuses on minority languages in education in Europe in contexts where they are in contact with national state languages and English. Teaching minority language implies bilingual education because it is not about replacing the majority language, but to come ‘alongside’ or at ‘equal footing’. The cases of Basque and Frisian, comparing and contrasting their similarities and differences, are analyzed. Schools in these regions desire to go beyond bilingualism and to promote multilingualism as an important aim in education. The contribution of Ofelia García’s work to research in these contexts is discussed.

Reflections On Language And Identity: Ofelia García's Impact On One Latina's Academic Trajectory And Scholarship, Dina López

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

This essay shares my own personal story of how—as a first-generation Latina academic—working with Ofelia García transformed my sense of self and trajectory as a scholar working with issues of language, identity, and education. Weaving personal anecdotes throughout, I trace the evolution of my thinking and research with a focus on the concepts of heteroglossic language ideologies, dynamic bilingualism, and translanguaging. I conclude the essay by reflecting on the importance and implications of first-generation Latina academics receiving mentorship from senior Latina scholars.

Instructional Design And Strategies For Multicultural Education: A Qualitative Case Study, Shamila Janakiraman, William R. Watson, Sunnie L. Watson, Papia Bawa

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

With more people moving abroad for education and work, many countries are becoming multicultural in population. Hence, developing multicultural attitudes is becoming imperative to prevent negative thoughts and feelings toward minorities that may translate into discriminatory behaviors toward them. One way to ensure this is through multicultural education. The aim of multicultural education is to ensure that students from diverse racial, ethnic, and social-class groups will experience educational equality. This qualitative case study analyzes the course design and instructional strategies implemented by a professor in a multicultural education course offered in a U.S. university. We have examined how the professor …

Perceptions Of Offshore Wind Farms And Community Development: Case Study Of Fangyuan Township, Chunghua County, Taiwan, Ku-Jung Lin, Chia-Pao Hsu, Hung-Yu Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Surrounded by the ocean, Taiwan has many rich marine cultural resources that have benefited its coastal communities and led to the development of diverse traditional marine industries. A typical example is the unique tradition of “Sea Buffalos Working in the Oyster Field”, which has been practiced for over a century in Fangyuan Township of Changhua County. The cultural landscape of buffalos and workers cultivating oyster fields has been recognized as a precious cultural heritage by both local and international parties. However, Fangyuan Township is facing a turning point due to the installation of offshore wind turbines. Development-promoting public agencies and …

Social Dimensions Of Student Debt: A Data Mining Analysis, Dirk Witteveen, Paul Attewell Oct 2019

Social Dimensions Of Student Debt: A Data Mining Analysis, Dirk Witteveen, Paul Attewell

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Media commentary on undergraduates' loan debt portrays a crisis in which many students are unable to pay back their loans, having borrowed large sums and lacking sufficient post-college income to repay. Several scholars have questioned the media accounts, noting that indebtedness is highest among students from high income families, while defaults predominate among low debt students. Using a data mining technique known as CART, we analyze national data on the indebtedness of recent baccalaureate graduates, to uncover combinations of social characteristics that are associated with loan pressure: the ratio of indebtedness to post-college earnings. We find that students from lower …

Factors Influencing Backer Funding Intention In Crowdfunding: Psychological Contract Violation Perspective, Qun Zhao, Chun-Der Chen, Jin-Long Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Literature has highlighted the importance of psychological contract violation (PCV) on employee attitudes and behaviors in an organization. However, few studies have empirically introduced this concept in a crowdfunding context. This study aims to propose a comprehensive framework to examine the effects of perceived product innovation, PCV and trust in a crowdfunding platform on backer attitudes and their funding intentions. Results show that perceived reciprocity for backers and PCV are the most important factors leading to backers’ funding intentions. Moreover, perceived reciprocity channels the effects of perceived product innovation, PCV, and trust in the crowd-funding platform on backers’ funding intention. …
