The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies

The purpose of this study was to explore how secondary students interpret the classroom culture that preservice social studies teachers create during their student teaching semester. This question was answered by examining results of a survey of secondary social studies students that allowed them to evaluate the classroom culture their social studies preservice teacher created. A Student Perception Survey was used for the study, which loaded four main indicators of classroom culture. Journal of Law and Social Policy

Monetary redress programs that respond to injuries suffered by survivors of out-of-home care are increasingly common and very expensive. This article’s distinctive contribution is to approach these redress programs as a form of social policy. Both survivors and states have interests in the operation of redress programs. Some of those interests are mutually compatible, but there are obvious conflicts as well. The article concludes by advocating a strategy for resolving an illustrative conflict.

Understanding Reflection From The Perspective Of Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Deborah A. Greenawald

Dissertations

Across the nation, nurse educators are seeking to meet the needs of students with diverse learning characteristics within increasingly complex academic and clinical environments. One teaching-learning strategy that has been used is reflection; however, there is a notable lack of consensus among educators and researchers about the specific nature of reflection. The purpose of this study was to describe reflection from the perspective of baccalaureate nursing students. A review of the literature provided the context for the study, and was organized into four sections: Historical Perspectives, Models and Definitions of Reflection; Reflection in Nursing Practice; Reflection in Nursing Education; and …

Social Work Educators' Perceptions Of Their Leadership And Management Competencies, Leah K. Lazzaro Sep 2019

Social Work Educators' Perceptions Of Their Leadership And Management Competencies, Leah K. Lazzaro

Social Work Doctoral Dissertations

Higher education, like many industries, is facing a staggering leadership gap as many educators plan to retire (Bailyn, 2014). As a result, social work education is called upon to respond to the need for emerging social workers to help fill the leadership positions as executive leadership retires en masse(Stewart, 2016). Leadership and management competencies are two separate and often competing skillsets. Managers plan and complete tasks related to an organization’s goals, while leaders inspire people and communicate a vision (Weinbach & Taylor, 2015; Wimpfheimer, 2004). Social work educators need both management and leadership skills to be prepared to face …

Constructing The Meaning Of Family In The Context Of Biological Family Separation : A Study Of Children In Institutional Care And Care Leavers In Zimbabwe, Getrude Dadirai Gwenzi

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Family has been defined as a powerful and pervasive word in our culture, embracing a variety of social, cultural, economic and symbolic meanings. Its importance for the development and wellbeing of children cannot be overemphasized. How ‘family’ is conceptualized by both children and adults remains a highly-contested subject considering the many changes in the form, structure, and relationships that could be described as ‘family’. Few studies have examined the relational lives of children and young adults who grow up in institutional care from a sociological perspective. The thesis makes meaningful contributions to the literature with a study of children and …

A Study Of Problems And Prospects Of Using Social Networking Sites By Students And Research Scholars Of Alagappa University, Mercy Angeline

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

An exponential rise in usage of Social Networking Sites has been seen within the last few years. Their ease of use and instant gratification effect on users has altered the way people in general and students in particular spend their interval. Young grown-ups, particularly teens tend to be unaware of just how much time they actually spent on SNS. Negative compares of SNS practice include the shrinkage in real life social community participation and academic achievement, as well as relationship problems, each of which may be indicative of potential addiction. This study aims to get a deeper understanding of both …

Preparing Researchers To Conduct Interdisciplinary, Multi-Method Qualitative Research, Kathryn Roulston Sep 2019

Preparing Researchers To Conduct Interdisciplinary, Multi-Method Qualitative Research, Kathryn Roulston

The Qualitative Report

In this paper I outline ideas for how qualitative research methods might be taught in ways that value difference, promote dialogue, and encourage graduates to engage actively in their disciplines to promote the benefits of qualitative inquiry, locally, nationally and globally. I argue for approaches to teach qualitative inquiry in ways that value (1) interdisciplinarity, in that teaching draws on multiple epistemologies and theoretical approaches to inquiry developed across disciplines; (2) diversity in methodological approaches, in that teaching explores multiple methods to respond to research questions that are continually subject to revision, innovation, and critical analysis; and (3) the knowledge …

Citation Rates For Ohio State Graduate Theses & Dissertations: Trends, Surprises, And Inaccuracies, Daniel S. Dotson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Ohio State University’s holdings of graduate theses and dissertations were examined to determine if highly-downloaded titles tended to be highly-cited. The study found that citation rates were highly variable and did not necessarily correspond to download rates. This included very highly downloaded titles with low citation rates, and lesser-downloaded titles with high citation rates. The study found that Google Scholar, which was used to identify citation rates, too often counts theses and dissertations as a version of a different work with the same title, even if it is another format and sometimes with additional authors. This article will share …
