Doing Participatory Action Research As A Doctoral Student In The Peace And Conflict Studies Field, Phill Gittins
Doing Participatory Action Research As A Doctoral Student In The Peace And Conflict Studies Field, Phill Gittins
Peace and Conflict Studies
There is still little written about doing participatory action research (PAR) as a doctoral student. This paper provides a missing first-person account of doing a PAR Ph.D. in the Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) field. Based on the author’s own experience of using PAR as part of his PACS doctoral degree this paper reflects on why he decided to use PAR in his doctorate project and how he went about doing it. It further highlights some of the benefits (academic and non-academic) of doing a PAR Ph.D., as well as challenges faced and responses to them. Four key lessons learned …
Radical Feminist Nuns: Spiritual Activism, Catholicism, And The Power Of (Sister)Hood, Emily Lauletta
Radical Feminist Nuns: Spiritual Activism, Catholicism, And The Power Of (Sister)Hood, Emily Lauletta
Gender & Women’s Studies Student Scholarship
Based on the readings of authors such as Gloria Anzaldúa, AnaLouise Keating, Leela Fernandes, and others, throughout the course of this semester, I have been able to develop my own definition of spiritual activism that I believe integrates the theories and concepts that these scholars have written about with my own experiences. Having done both intensive self-study and academic research, I have come to understand that spiritual activism is the act of transforming one’s self through personal and communal reflection in order to work towards transforming the world and set it on a pathway towards equity and social justice. Based …

A Discharge Checklist To Combat Patient Readmission: A Case Study In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Shaylin O’Connell
Doctor of Occupational Therapy Capstone Projects
A Discharge Checklist to Combat Patient Readmission: A Case Study in a Skilled Nursing Facility focuses on the creation of a discharge checklist, as an intervention, to increase the competency for occupational therapists working in skilled nursing facilities discharging clients back to their home environment. A SNF (Skilled Nursing Facility) provides post-acute healthcare services and rehabilitation for patients following a hospitalization prior to discharging home (Burke et al., 2017). This case study for clinical improvement uses the DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) quality model and a multiple case study research design for evaluation. The goal of the quality improvement …

Race, Town, And Gown: A White Christian College And A White Suburb Address Race, David B. Malone
Race, Town, And Gown: A White Christian College And A White Suburb Address Race, David B. Malone
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Wheaton, Illinois and Wheaton College share a name derived from early settlers, a geographic space, and conservative political and religious values. In their early years, the college admitted black students and the suburb had black residents. Their paths diverged after pressure from religious movements and suburbanization: Wheaton continued as one of the few Chicago suburbs to have black residents, yet the college stopped admitting black students around the 1920s. Wheaton passed Illinois’ first fair housing law in 1967 but controversy regarding a significant downtown project led to subsequently pursuing development aimed at wealthier residents and the proportion of non-white residents …

An Interprofessional Collaborative Approach To The Development Of A Content Valid Interview Questionnaire For Persons With Hearing Loss And Their Communication Partners, Nancy A. Delich, Stephen D. Roberts
JADARA
An assessment instrument needs to be valid in order for data to be accurately interpreted and applied. Currently, few rigorous content evaluations have been conducted on hearing-related questionnaires. This study describes a multiphase approach for obtaining content validity evidence in the development of a questionnaire that explores quality of life for persons with hearing loss and their communication partners. A panel of 15 interprofessional experts evaluated 41 questionnaire items for content relevance and content clarity. Findings revealed an overall scale of .99 for content relevance and .85 for content clarity, indicating high content validity for the revised 40-item questionnaire.

Deaf Adult Consumers Of Public Behavioral Health Services In Maryland: January 1, 2016 – January 1, 2018, Teresa Crowe Ph.D
JADARA
This exploratory study describes the demographic profiles of 7,474 deaf adults who are consumers of public behavioral health services in the state of Maryland. Up until recent years, data about deaf consumers were unavailable to researchers. Over the past two years, additional items were added to the Outcome Measurement Systems interview, such as “primary language” and boxes where providers could record “deaf.” The data presented in this paper are for deaf adults who received services from January 1, 2016 to January 1, 2018. The results of this study indicate that: 1) most deaf consumers lived in private residences, 2) consumers …

Whole Youth Development In Kenya: Survey Of Employers And Employees In The Formal And Informal Sectors To Determine Entry-Level Skills Among Youth (18-30 Yrs) In Employment Kenya, Alex Awiti, Caleb Orwa, Lucy Mbuvi, Mercy Karumba
East Africa Institute
An estimated 78% of Kenya’s population is aged below 35 years (NCPD, 2017) with a median age of 19 years (World Population Review, 2019). This demographic structure can be either a valuable dividend or a risk to development (UNDP, 2013). One of the major downsides of the ‘youth bulge’ has been youth unemployment, which is both an economic and social challenge. According to the Kenya Youth Survey 2016, unemployment is the top concern for the youth at 63%. About 1 in 2 university graduates are out of full-time employment; youth aged between 18 and 25 are twice more likely to …

Job Entry-Level Skills: Seizing The Moment, Securing The Future, Alex Awiti, Caleb Orwa, Lucy Mbuvi, Mercy Karumba
East Africa Institute
The aim of this study was to generate evidence to support reliable assessment of the skills and competences possessed by youth in entry-level jobs (the supply), and the skills and competences needed by employers (the demand).
The study was conducted in 24 counties, which are home to over 85 % of Kenya’s formal sector business establishments1. Fifteen sectors, comprising agriculture, wholesale & retail, construction, health and ICT, which account for 90 % of jobs in both formal and informal sector, were included in the survey. A total of 9,355 interviews were conducted; 6,362 employed youth and 693 self-employed youth aged …
Racialized Aggressions And Sense Of Belonging Among Asian American College Students, Kevin J. Gin
Racialized Aggressions And Sense Of Belonging Among Asian American College Students, Kevin J. Gin
Institute for Asian American Studies Publications
This naturalistic, qualitative inquiry explored how Asian American college students’ encounters with racialized aggressions on social media impacted their sense of belonging at a predominately White institution (PWI). Participants indicated that encounters with racism on social media, especially on the anonymous mobile app Yik Yak, engendered racial distrust, and alienation from their institution. These findings suggest the virtual components of campus culture play a critical role in determining how Asian American college students feel they are welcomed, valued, and included at a PWI.

“Our Stories”: First-Year Learning Communities Students Reflections On The Transition To College, Karen Goodlad, Sandra Cheng, Jennifer Sears, Mery Diaz, Ashwin Satyanarayana, Phil Freniske
Publications and Research
Analysis of diverse first-year and first-generation learning communities students’ reflective narratives shows this population of students at an urban commuter college of technology face significant challenges in the transition into college. Designed to assist in this transition, the “Our Stories” digital writing project incorporates reflective writing in the long established, yet recently revitalized, learning communities program. Through analysis of the “Our Stories” project, we examine how the structure of our learning communities program, together with writing on an open digital platform, builds community and has the potential to positively influence students as they identify, and begin to make sense, of …

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
Professional development is a critical but frequently overlooked aspect of students’ education. This paper chronicles a group work-based MSW elective course that explores issues of professional identity and responsibility within a contemporary context, develops projects focused on individually-determined professional interests, and provides opportunities to participate in and present at professional conferences such as the International Association for Social Work with Groups (IASWG) Symposium. The syllabus, feedback from students, and recommendations for replication are shared.

Peer Victimization, Internalizing Problems, And Substance Use In Urban African American Adolescents In Chicago: The Relevance Of The Self-Medication Hypothesis, Jun Sung Hong, Yi-Ping Hsieh, Kelly Lynn Clary, Rose Theda, Ryan Russ, Dexter R. Voisin
Social Work Faculty Publications
The aim of the study was to explore the link between peer victimization and substance use and tested the mediating role of internalizing problems in urban African American adolescents in Chicago. Six hundred and thirty-eight adolescents in Chicago's Southside participated in the study. Results from the hierarchical linear regression analysis showed that youth who reported peer victimization were at risk of internalizing problems. Those who were bullied by their peers were more likely to display internalizing problems, which was also significantly associated with substance use. Consistent with the self-medication hypothesis, findings from the study suggest that bullied youth are likely …
Embodied Risk-Taking: Embracing Discomfort Through Image Theatre, Leah White
Embodied Risk-Taking: Embracing Discomfort Through Image Theatre, Leah White
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
Taking risks does not come easily to many honors students. Often their success is based on carefully following directions and working hard to meet established expectations. Although the Minnesota State University, Mankato Honors Program’s competency-based model encourages students to focus on personal growth rather than course completion, our students still struggle with the openended nature of reflection-based learning. This essay explains how incorporating Augusto Boal’s Image Theatre techniques in an honors seminar, Performance for Social Change, helped encourage students to become more comfortable with taking academic and ideological risks. Boal’s methods depend heavily on embodied experience as a companion to …
Childhood Trauma: An Analysis Of Trauma Severity, Symptoms, And Contributing Factors Within A Child Advocacy Center, Hannah Coffey
Childhood Trauma: An Analysis Of Trauma Severity, Symptoms, And Contributing Factors Within A Child Advocacy Center, Hannah Coffey
Munn Scholars Awards
Child abuse and neglect occur at high rates across the United States, with about one out of every seven children having experienced maltreatment in the past year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). Child maltreatment has been associated with a variety of negative outcomes such as developmental difficulties (Hildyard & Wolfe, 2002; Johnson et al., 2002), risky sexual behaviors (Harr et al., 2013; Haydon, Hussey, & Halpern, 2011; Maniglio, 2009; Thompson et al., 2016), criminal behavior (Edinburgh, Pape-Babolil, Harpin, & Saewyc, 2014; Higgins, Ricketts, Griffith, & Jirard, 2013; Makarios, 2007), long-term health problems (Maniglio, 2009; Trickett, Negriff, Ji, & …
“Las Mamás No Son Putas”: Percepciones Y Experiencias De Embarazo Y Maternidad En Trabajadoras Sexuales En Buenos Aires / Mothers Are Not Prostitutes: Perceptions And Experiences Of Pregnancy And Motherhood Among Sex Workers In Buenos Aires, Fiona Kennedy
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
La Comunicación Intercultural Entre Pacientes Bolivianos Y Trabajadores De Salud En Buenos Aires, Argentina / Intercultural Communication Between Bolivian Patients And Health-Care Workers In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lilly Snellman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Systems Of Crime And Castigation: A Reevaluation Of The Punishment Bureaucracy, Lia Pikus
Systems Of Crime And Castigation: A Reevaluation Of The Punishment Bureaucracy, Lia Pikus
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Models of reform within the criminal justice system often operate from a top-down perspective, affecting change on surface levels to attempt to better the system. One example of such a reform is Scotland’s Presumption Against Short Sentences. These kinds of changes, as I will illustrate in this paper, both fall short of achieving genuine change and often produce negative side effects. However, a few countries have made deeper changes to the ways their systems both view and handle crime and punishment; one such system is Norway. Through rehabilitation and restorative justice, Norway has greatly decreased rates of recidivism, increased social …

Queer Otherwise: Embodying A Queer Identity In Cape Town, Teak Emanuel Hodge
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This research responds to the following question: how do LGBTQ South Africans in Cape Town come to understand and embody their queerness? Drawing on ideas of the body as a sense making agent (Meyburgh 2006) and site of socio-political contestation (Foucault 1975) this research adapts body-mapping methodologies (de Jager, Tewson, Ludlow, Boydell 2016) to excavate the ways in which LGBT South Africans negotiate their queerness. Through centering the experiences of three LGBTQ identified South African’s in conversation with the experiences of the researcher, this paper delves into how queer people make sense of and understand themselves in relation to their …

Implementation Of A Self-Care And Wellness Educational Program Addressing Job Stress Among Child Protective Service Workers, Natonya Murray
Doctoral Projects
Job stress attributed to secondary exposure to trauma and the high work demands put child protective service workers at high risk of developing physical and psychological health problems. The purpose of the project was to develop and implement a self-care and wellness educational program addressing job stress among child protective service workers (CPS) guided by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Science Administration’s (SAMSHA, n.d.b) educational toolkit, Promoting Staff Wellness and Preventing Vicarious Trauma and other Work Force Concerns, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC, 2019c) section on Adverse Childhood Experiences, and the National Council for Community Behavioral …

“Can I Be Something More Than The Worst Thing I Had Ever Done?”: The Difficulties Of Reentry After Incarceration In Kentucky, Larissa Dm Heslop
Honors Theses
This thesis focuses on the difficulties that people face upon reentry after incarceration in Kentucky. An ethnographic background was used to understand the current situation of incarceration and reentry in Kentucky. Mass incarceration, Kentucky incarcerated population demographics, high costs of incarceration, and Kentucky politics on incarceration are covered in the ethnographic background. A literature review was used to give context to difficulties that people face such as clothing, disenfranchisement, education, employment, family relations and social support, housing, transportation and basic needs, mental health, religion, and stigma. Ethnographic research methods, which consisted of semi-structured interviews and participant observation, were used to …
