A Comparative Assessment Of Climate Change Related Knowledge And Perception Of Coastal And Tribal Community, Kirti K Kalinga, Navaneeta Rath
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Climate change is a global problem with local ramifications. It supposed to impact all nations and states across borders. But the way it is perceived by different stakeholders varies. Perception towards climate change matters because it will shape the way knowledge is framed and risk is calculated. It is also important to examine the knowledge of those people who are affected the most due to climate change. The present paper tries to understand the perception of farmers on climate change. As agriculture is one of the most climate sensitive sectors, it becomes pertinent here to explore are the farmers aware …

Beyond the five basic senses is another bodily sense call interoception. Interoception is the process by which the nervous system interprets what is going on in the body. Dysfunction of this sense has been linked to many mental illnesses, specifically trauma disorders. In the article, “Claiming Peaceful Embodiment Through Yoga,” Rhodes (2015) explains how the bodily sense of interoception is inhibited by trauma. Rhodes examines the way therapeutic yoga interventions can be a healing process for women with complex trauma histories through reconnection and control over their bodies and emotions. Our bodies carry the weight of our stories, and as …

Nursing Campus Therapy Dog, Deborah A. Hall
Nursing Campus Therapy Dog, Deborah A. Hall
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
An acknowledged bond has existed between humans and animals throughout history. Therapeutic physical and psycho-social effects of these bonding relationships have been noted in health care settings. Professional nursing education is known to be one of the most demanding and stressful fields of study. Students begin to experience extreme stress early in their nursing education. An animal-assisted intervention with a therapy dog is an innovative and inexpensive action that can help decrease the stress, anxiety, and depression students experience in higher education.
The focus of this dissertation portfolio was an animal-assisted intervention with a nursing campus therapy dog. The initial …

Anxiety Symptoms And Sleep Disturbance In Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: The Impact Of Receiving And Training A Service Dog, Diane Scotland-Coogan
Anxiety Symptoms And Sleep Disturbance In Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: The Impact Of Receiving And Training A Service Dog, Diane Scotland-Coogan
The Qualitative Report
The impact of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on our combat veterans and their families is extensive. Symptoms of anxiety and the effects of sleep disturbance have a negative impact on daily functioning (Wright et al., 2011). The presence of a dog has demonstrated a reduction in anxiety symptoms, which may have a positive influence on improved sleep (Shearer, Hunt, Chowdhury, & Nicol, 2016). The Veterans Administration (VA) has been using canines to assist combat veterans in reintegrating into civilian life, and most currently, as a part of psychological therapy (Rubenstein, 2012). This research examined the impact on combat veterans with …

“Miss, This Is A Lot Of Work”: Exploring Part-Time Students Experiences Of Qualitative Research, Therese Ferguson, Tenesha Gordon
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative research can be time consuming and intensive as researchers engage in data collection, analysis, and interpretation of rich, detailed, multi-layered, and voluminous data. For Master’s level students struggling to balance full-time work, family, part-time studies, and other obligations, the nature of qualitative research can be overwhelming and discouraging as they learn about and engage in the research process. However, if students’ experiences are rich and meaningful, the time investment can be worthwhile. In this generic qualitative study, Master’s Level Education students’ experiences in an Introduction to Qualitative Research in Education course are explored. Drawing on data from semi-structured one-to-one …

Indigenous Arts And Tribal Colleges And Universities: Expressions Of Collective Native Identity, Cheryl Crazy Bull, Colleen Co Carew, Bridget Skenadore
International Journal of Human Rights Education
This commentary discusses the American Indian College Fund and Tribal College and Universities’ support of Indigenous arts as critical to cultural identity and place-based experiences for Native people. Indigenous arts are deeply rooted in connections to shared Indigenous values of kinship, relationship to all living and non-living things, language, and the land. In the United States, hundreds of Tribes have art forms that emerge from place, from interpretation of Tribal knowledge, and which meet the everyday, human needs of beauty, usefulness, and connectedness. Our right as humans to preserve and revitalize traditional and contemporary Native arts supporting our cultural identities …

Cherokee Perspectives On Indigenous Rights Education (Ire) And Indigenous Participatory Action Research (Ipar) As Decolonizing Praxis, Tiffanie Hardbarger
International Journal of Human Rights Education
In response to the long and harmful legacy of extractive research done on Indigenous peoples and the erasure and devaluation of Indigenous knowledge, pedagogy, and lifeways within Western educational settings, many educators and scholars are seeking to implement decolonizing methodologies into research and educational strategies. Utilizing research conducted alongside Cherokee students during an undergraduate/graduate course (2016-2018), this paper explores how the use of Indigenous Rights Education (IRE) in tandem with Indigenous Participatory Action Research (IPAR) provide pathways to navigate the difficult work of engaging with the underlying epistemological tensions that undergird U.S. settler society. In this article, a female Cherokee/EuroAmerican …

Major: Social Work
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Katie Kranz, Social Work
Vaping in the United States is becoming an epidemic especially among young adults and adolescents. As the attention and perception of vaping increases, very little is known about treatment plans and recovery strategies. Based on the current literature and qualitative research from a social work research class, most information on vaping is received through peer to peer communication or social media platforms. Both peer and social media influence have impacted and influenced vaping behaviors, especially the use of a Juul. Vaping is prevalent because of how quickly it’s gained popularity …

The Mom television series is the perfect medium to call attention to the idea of women in addiction recovery in pop culture today. As it simultaneously calls upon known stereotypes and misconceptions about addiction, it also subconsciously educates the viewer on facts about what addiction recovery may really look like. To a viewer with no knowledge of addiction and recovery, it hints at what recovery life may look like while using humor. Humor in itself can serve to be a beneficial coping mechanism, as it is the physical release of …

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
This pilot study reports the baseline data of a prospective longitudinal study examining the educational achievements of grandchildren being raised by grandparents in parent absent homes. The baseline data includes 117 grandchildren in grades K-12 in two school districts in a southeastern state. School records reporting 2,230 grades were examined for grade point average (GPA) and attendance for K-12 and conduct in grades K-5. The majority of the grandchildren achieved A/B averages. There were no significant differences between gender, pre-care experiences, placement by welfare agencies or paternal involvement across years of schooling. GPAs were lower in the grandchildren who had …

The Impact Of A Goal-Setting Intervention With Custodial Grandmothers: A Demonstration Project, Julian Montoro-Rodriguez, Bert Hayslip
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
The increasing number of grandparents raising grandchildren underscores the need to provide assistance to grandparent caregivers in terms of training them not only to refresh intergenerational skills, but also developing appropriate and effective strategies associated with the setting of personally meaningful goals for themselves. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of a socio-cognitive pilot demonstration program to improve the health and social psychological outcomes for grandmothers raising grandchildren using the theory of Selection, Optimization and Compensation (Freund & Baltes, 1998).
Sixteen grandmothers raising a grandchild under the age of 18 without the assistance of that child’s …

Asian American Grandparents Caring For Grandchildren: Findings From The Census 2010-2012 American Community Survey, Fengyan Tang, Heejung Jang, Elizabeth Mulvaney
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
Research on grandparent caregivers has received growing attention, yet information about Asian American grandparents is limited. Using 2010-2012 American Community Survey (ACS) data, this study provides a national profile of Asian American grandparent caregivers across ethnic groups by region (East, Southeast, and South Asians), and examines socioeconomic and cultural factors related to grandparent caregiving. Of the over half a million Asian Americans who lived with grandchildren during 2010-2012, about 16 percent reported as primary caregivers, and over 31 percent lived in grandparent-headed households. Compared with East Asians, South Asian grandparents were less likely to be primary caregivers for their grandchildren, …

Written In Black, White, And Red: An Exploration Of Civilizer Theology In American History, Jeremy Mcginniss
Written In Black, White, And Red: An Exploration Of Civilizer Theology In American History, Jeremy Mcginniss
Master's Theses
This paper proposes an extended definition and discusses examples of civilizer theology within the perceptions and practices of white Protestant American Christianity faith traditions. Civilizer theology is defined as a self-referential, self-fulfilling framework actively shaping the expectations, behaviors and practices of societal norms driving cultural practices. Examples are selected as guided by three significant and interdependent dispositions characterizing civilizer theology: cultural decay/moral decline, authority, and violence. This paper hypothesizes theological interpretation, application and exegesis, mediated by the three dispositions, are deliberately applied to support socio-economic, cultural and political ends with the goal of maintaining power structures benefiting a particular group.
