The Role Of Resilience On Second-Victim Outcomes: Examining Individual And External Factors Of Medical Professionals, Claudia Hernandez
The Role Of Resilience On Second-Victim Outcomes: Examining Individual And External Factors Of Medical Professionals, Claudia Hernandez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present work is intended to bring awareness to medical professionals impacted by the occurrence of errors they have committed or witnessed (i.e., second-victims) and highlight the negative effects that may result from such errors. The purpose of this research is to test whether resilience and negative affect that is experienced after a medical error are related. Additionally, four variables are tested as moderators of this relationship, two of which are considered individual variables (i.e., self-efficacy and work meaningfulness), and two of which are characterized as external variables (i.e., co-worker support and organizational support). Twenty-two healthcare professionals from a hospital's …
Habituation Trajectory During Exposure Therapy: Comparing Trauma Frequency And Trauma Type, Madeline Marks
Habituation Trajectory During Exposure Therapy: Comparing Trauma Frequency And Trauma Type, Madeline Marks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The current DSM-5 criteria for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affords heterogeneous symptom presentations; however, current treatment fails to consider differences in trauma frequency and trauma type. These different symptom profiles that exist within the PTSD framework lead to questions about the generalizability of treatment outcomes from one group to another group. One group of interest is those that experience multiple traumatic events and report multiple index traumas (trauma frequency). The second group of interest is those with a PTSD diagnosis from occupational exposure to traumatic events (trauma type). Appreciation of the reinforcement schedule may be particularly crucial for understanding treatment …

Implementing Serious Illness Conversations In A Gastrointestinal Oncology Clinic: A Mixed Method Evaluation Of A Quality Improvement Initiative In A Boston Hospital, Rhaea N. Photopoulos
DNP Scholarly Projects
INTRODUCTION: Many times, advanced care planning happens too late in patients with metastatic gastrointestinal cancer, patients and families are not educated on prognostic awareness and are often not well and poorly equipped to make informed end of life decisions.
AVAILABLE KNOWLEDGE: A Serious Illness Conversation guide was developed and implemented in a Boston hospital to aid practitioners (oncology nurse practitioners and oncologists) in facilitating advanced care planning. The aim of this study was to describe provider experience with the conversation guide and understand facilitators and barriers to implementation of advanced care planning.

Strategies To Increase Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing In Rural Areas Of The United States: A Systematic Review, Avery Petrucci, Kristen Custer, Eric C. Nemec
Physician Assistant Studies Student Publications
Purpose: HIV incidence continues to increase, with a large portion of new diagnoses found in rural areas of the United States. The worsening statistics in rural areas may be attributed to stigma alone and contribute to the lack of testing available for patients. The objective of this systematic review is to identify accessible and feasible strategies to increase HIV testing within the rural communities in the United States. Methods: A systematic literature search of CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE with Full Text, and PsycINFO with restrictions of the English language and rural communities outside of the United States through August 2, 2018. …
An Interdisciplinary Approach: Using Social Work Praxis To Develop Trauma Resiliency In Live-In Residential Life Staff, Jason R. Lynch
An Interdisciplinary Approach: Using Social Work Praxis To Develop Trauma Resiliency In Live-In Residential Life Staff, Jason R. Lynch
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Live-in college residential life positions often involve extensive and diverse responsibilities including the support of residential students experiencing traumatic life events. While live-in staff undergo extensive training in regard to supporting these students, they are often ill-equipped to understand and prevent potential negative consequences associated with trauma support work including burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress. Given the increase in students reporting traumatic life events including sexual violence, severe economic hardships, and severe mental health disabilities, it follows that live-in residential life staff are being called on more frequently to serve as first responders and support personnel for these …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore occupational therapy student’s experiences with integrating best practice professional ideals during Level II fieldwork. Occupational therapy students in the United States complete 24 weeks of Level II fieldwork prior to graduation. Students transition from the classroom setting where they are prepared with knowledge about the professions best practice ideals, to the fieldwork setting where many factors impact the learning experience. Using qualitative research, a narrative inquiry was undertaken to explore the experiences of four occupational therapy students during their Level II fieldwork experiences. I interviewed each student on five occasions throughout the …

The 'Second Wave' Of Spanish Clinical Legal Education: Empirical, Pedagogical, And Institutional Lessons For A Pilot Course And Program At The University Of Granada, Andrew King-Ries, Masao Javier Lopez Sako, Eduardo R.C. Capulong, Pilar Fernandez Artiach
Faculty Law Review Articles
Spanish clinicians today benefit from the ‘first wave’ of early adopters. We also benefit from decades of clinical scholarship—most recently about the Western European and global clinical legal education movements—and empirical data on what lawyers actually do and need in practice. In this article, the authors summarize key empirical, pedagogical, and institutional lessons to ground the creation of a pilot course and program at the University of Granada.
The Impact Of Adequate Funding And Expenditures On Public Education And Standardized Test Scores: A Case Study, Uma E. Casey
The Impact Of Adequate Funding And Expenditures On Public Education And Standardized Test Scores: A Case Study, Uma E. Casey
Undergraduate Research Awards
In this paper, I examine the relationship between public school spending and standardized test scores. Most research conducted on this topic compares school spending with standardized test scores. However, Jackson, Johnson, and Persico’s research conducted on school finance reform changes and its effect on long-run adult outcomes concludes that test scores are “imperfect measures of learning” and addresses that limitation by looking at “long-run outcomes” of adult success rates, like educational attainment. Nevertheless, I have chosen to continue the comparison of school spending against test scores. The key factor behind this decision is the fact that test scores offer a …

The Effect Of A Behavioral Health Specialist Program On Providers’ Perceptions Of Mental Illness, Self-Efficacy And Satisfaction In The Inpatient Medical Unit., Trinity D. Thomas
DNP Projects
PURPOSE: The purpose of this DNP project was to assess the effect of a Behavioral Health Specialist (BHS) program on providers’ perceptions of mental illness, self-efficacy and satisfaction in the inpatient medical unit.
METHODS: This DNP project used a mixed-methods approach to obtain data, which included a pretest-posttest design, and key informant interviews. The survey data was obtained from provider responses to an email that was forwarded from managers of four targeted medical-surgical floors. A cover letter was included in the email which further provided information about key informant interviews and the contact information for the principle investigator to arrange …
A Pilot Of Emergency Department-Initiated Buprenorphine For Opioid Withdrawal And Opioid Use Disorder: A Quality Improvement Project, Jason Lucey
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Emergency department (ED) visits for opioid related visits have increased dramatically during the opioid epidemic. Buprenorphine is an evidence-based therapy for treating opioid use disorder (OUD) and withdrawal. Unfortunately, lack of access to pharmacotherapy for OUD, including buprenorphine, remains a challenge. Research supports ED-initiated buprenorphine as a practical, cost-effective strategy which engages patients in treatment better than non-pharmacologic alternatives.
Purpose: The aims of this improvement project were to 1) develop a pilot process in an ED for providing buprenorphine to patients in opioid withdrawal or for OUD; 2) recruit and train a cohort of ED staff on the process; …

Reports
As of 2019, the Evidence-based Nebraska project (EB-Nebraska) has been funded for four years. Sometimes, in the excitement to analyze data and generate reports, as researchers, we forget to take a step back and relish in the process that got us here. We also thought it would be important to document this process in an effort to inform other jurisdictions thinking of developing a statewide evaluation such as this. Furthermore, we hope that by better understanding the process behind EB-Nebraska, the reader may leave with a stronger appreciation for the work that the State of Nebraska is doing for Nebraska’s …
Improving Compassion Fatigue And Vicarious Trauma Knowledge For Psychiatric Nurses, Natalie P. Rebelo
Improving Compassion Fatigue And Vicarious Trauma Knowledge For Psychiatric Nurses, Natalie P. Rebelo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nurses are exposed to traumatic patients and high stress regularly; this repeated exposure can increase rates of compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. When nurses are not properly educated about compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma, it can impact their ability to provide effective patient care and result in harmful effects including insecurity, altered cognitive functioning, loss of empathy and diminished self-esteem. This project focused on educating psychiatric nurses regarding compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. The theory guiding the project was the Neuman's system model. Fifty-six psychiatric nurses were administered a pretest consisting of 10 multiple choice test questions. They were educated …

Quality Improvement Initiative To Improve Patient Attendance In Diabetes Self-Management Education Classes, Charon Denise Randel
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes self-management education (DSME) is a key resource in the battle against diabetes and its secondary effects. This quality improvement project was conducted to address the decreased attendance rates of DSME classes in a community health center in the southern United States. The practice question for this project explored process-related strategies to increase patient attendance in DSME classes. Based on review of patient reports of reasons for nonattendance and an evaluation of peer reviewed literature on improving attendance in DSME, the following strategies were implemented: (a) alternative solutions such as providing patients with the dates for a year of initial …
The Care Of The Sexual Assault Patient, Eun Sook Choi
The Care Of The Sexual Assault Patient, Eun Sook Choi
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Survivors of sexual assault (SA) experience a range of physical and mental health consequences. Despite universal agreement that follow-up care improves outcomes, studies demonstrate only one-third of survivors receive assault related follow-up care. This study aims to describe the patient population presenting after SA, characteristics of their acute care, and rates of follow-up within one-year at two sites of the Yale New Haven Hospital, which includes an urban tertiary care hospital (York Street Campus, YSC), and its satellite community hospital (St Raphael Campus, SRC). A retrospective medical record review was conducted of patients older than 12 years presenting after sexual …
Language Immersion Teachers' Perspectives Of Foreign Language Learning For Students With Disabilities, Chunling Zhang
Language Immersion Teachers' Perspectives Of Foreign Language Learning For Students With Disabilities, Chunling Zhang
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Foreign language learning for students with disabilities can be different from that of their nondisabled peers because of their special needs. Understanding the perspectives of language immersion teachers regarding their challenges and the support needed while working with students with disabilities in language immersion programs is important because such programs are growing rapidly nationwide. In addition, there is little research on the perspectives of these teachers in elementary school settings. The purpose of this qualitative study was to develop a deeper understanding of foreign language learning needs of students with disabilities from language immersion teachers' perspectives. Ajzen's theory of planned …
The Use Of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy With The Native American Population In The Southwest, Joseph Elias Woodruff
The Use Of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy With The Native American Population In The Southwest, Joseph Elias Woodruff
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Compared to other races, Native Americans have significantly higher rates of suicide and substance abuse. Dialectical behavioral therapy is an evidence-based program with efficacy for reducing suicidality and comorbid disorders within general populations but may not be effective for Native Americans because it is based in Western ideology. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of Native American therapists who use DBT with Native American populations. Using biosocial theory, I investigated the perceptions and lived experiences of 8 Native American therapists through a phenomenological approach. The research questions encompassed the experiences, including the cultural appropriateness, …

Drugs, Alcohol, And The Community College Student-Athlete: A Narrative Study, Kevin A. Berg
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research shows that student-athletes, whether at the high school or collegiate ranks, experience higher rates of alcohol consumption than their non-athlete student counterparts. However, one population that has not been studied is the community college student-athlete. Traditional community college students have different risk categories and needs than traditional 4-year university students. In this study, community college student-athletes provided their views and perceptions on drugs and alcohol. To obtain data, a qualitative narrative analysis was completed by interviewing 13 community college student-athletes to identify their views and opinions on drugs and alcohol. Once the interviews were completed, transcription and coding were …

Practicing Self-Efficacy And Transparency To Achieve Long-Term Recovery And Reduce Recidivism, Lisa Kent
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
There is limited data about the positive application of self-efficacy and the practice of transparency for individuals in recovery to achieve long-term recovery from substance addiction and criminal recidivism. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to gain more insight and knowledge about how the application of self-efficacy and the practice of transparency help individuals in recovery achieve long-term recovery from substance addiction and criminal recidivism for two or more years. The conceptual framework used to guide this study was Albert Bandura's self-efficacy theory. This study is significant because it explains that long-term recovery is not an easy task …
Police Officers' Perceptions Of Changes In Their Behavior While Being Video Recorded, Steven Patrick Ufford
Police Officers' Perceptions Of Changes In Their Behavior While Being Video Recorded, Steven Patrick Ufford
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Body worn cameras (BWCs) are a newer piece of equipment that has been issued to police officers in efforts to increase transparency and improve relations with the community. Researchers who have just recently begun studying the effects of BWCs have observed changes in behavior of officers who wear the equipment. Some of these changes potentially have an adverse effect on citizens and the officers who wear BWCs. Lipsky's street-level bureaucracy theory was utilized to examine police officer use of discretion when conducting field activities while wearing BWCs. The research question pertained to police officers' perceptions regarding changes in behavior while …
Increasing Clergy's Knowledge Of Mental Illness, Confidence, And Willingness To Refer, Suzan Mae Davis Merritt
Increasing Clergy's Knowledge Of Mental Illness, Confidence, And Willingness To Refer, Suzan Mae Davis Merritt
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over 43 million Americans suffer from mental illness annually with 40% seeking support from clergy (Polson & Rogers, 2007) who claim to be ineffectively prepared (Farrell & Goebert, 2008). This study investigated if mental health training administered to clergy would increase their knowledge of various mental disorders, alter their opinion regarding helpful resources, grow their self-confidence to help individuals experiencing mental health issues, and increase clergy's willingness to refer out. The theoretical basis for this research was attribution theory that attempts to explain social perceptions (Mannarini & Boffo, 2013) and the struggle individuals (i.e. clergy) have regarding the causation of …
