Transforming Deportation Defense: Lessons Learned From The Nation’S First Public Defender Program For Detained Immigrants, Talia Peleg, Ruben Loyo Jan 2019

Transforming Deportation Defense: Lessons Learned From The Nation’S First Public Defender Program For Detained Immigrants, Talia Peleg, Ruben Loyo

City University of New York Law Review

The unprecedented pace of deportations in recent years has led to increased investment, at the local level, in the provision of high volume legal services to immigrants facing deportation. Each investment in greater legal representation of noncitizens offers unique opportunities to raise the bar in a practice area that has been plagued by low quality representation and to experiment with institutional design as the immigration system slowly but surely moves toward a civil Gideon system. This paper takes a look at questions of institutional design and attorney practice norms within the context of the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project …

Faculty Publications

Using a resilience framework, the current cross-sectional study examined indicators of behavioral health risk and resilience among U.S. international students (N=322) across key sociodemographic characteristics. A multimethod approach was used to collect data with both an online platform and paper-based survey instrument. Results showed that higher levels of acculturative stress were reported by older students, females, undergraduates, students who lived with their families, and those who had resided in the US longer than 2 years. Findings underscore the importance of culturally relevant screening and prevention strategies that target resilience and other protective factors to reduce health risk and encourage well-being …

Interprofessional Education Enhancement: Inclusion Of Occupational Therapy, Julie Woodnorth, Heather A. Davidson Jan 2019

Interprofessional Education Enhancement: Inclusion Of Occupational Therapy, Julie Woodnorth, Heather A. Davidson

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

The increase in interprofessional education (IPE) opportunities provides an excellent opportunity for occupational therapy (OT) educators to partner with other health professions to deepen the understanding of how the OT profession adds value to future healthcare teams. The purpose of this study was to describe the development and impact of a curricular unit about the OT profession that was integrated into an established IPE program for medical, advanced practice nursing, pharmacy and social work students. A Needs Assessment was conducted by embedding an OT consultant within interprofessional student teams working in clinical environments over six weeks to observe baseline understanding …

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Students’ Beliefs About Knowledge And Knowing: Findings From Three Masters Level Programs In The Us, Diane M. Long, Anita W. Mitchell, Carla Chase, Bernadette Mineo Jan 2019

Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Students’ Beliefs About Knowledge And Knowing: Findings From Three Masters Level Programs In The Us, Diane M. Long, Anita W. Mitchell, Carla Chase, Bernadette Mineo

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

One of the expected outcomes of higher education for all entry-level occupational therapy (OT) students is to develop the capacity to think critically and engage in complex clinical reasoning. Beliefs about the justification of knowledge (epistemic cognition) and the nature of knowledge (ontological cognition) underlie the ability to develop sophisticated ways of thinking. There is a scarcity of research specific to occupational therapy students in the literature related to epistemic and ontological cognition. Based on a discussion prompted during an AOTA Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) workshop in 2014, OT faculty members from three entry-level occupational therapy …

Perceptions Of Low Income By Canadian Student Occupational Therapists, Naomi Newfield, Lucy Bartlett, Ellen Murray, Tim Park, Keri Chambers, Farah Hameed, Lynn Cockburn

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Low income negatively impacts health, access to health services, and overall quality of life. Living with low income is complex, strongly correlated with disability, age, gender, race, and mental illness, and can present barriers to participation in employment, self-care, and leisure occupations. Occupational therapists are well-positioned to reduce these socioeconomic, environmental, and personal barriers. Research on student occupational therapists’ learning and perceptions in working with individuals living with low income is unexplored. This study aimed to understand student occupational therapists’ perceptions and experiences related to low income and their knowledge of their professional roles in working with low income populations. …

The Effects Of Social Media Use On The Perceptions Of Mental Illness Among College Students, Brea Fisher Jan 2019

The Effects Of Social Media Use On The Perceptions Of Mental Illness Among College Students, Brea Fisher

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This study examined individuals’ use of and perceptions of social media networking sites (i.e. Facebook and Twitter) on their perceptions of mental illness. Previous studies have consistently found that media, by means of TV shows, movies, and news reports, depict distorted views of the mentally ill. Previous studies have also consistently found that these media depictions are related to increased stigma of mental illness and the mentally ill. This current study goes a step further by examining the role of social media networking sites on individual’s perceptions, since they are newer and more widely used forms of social media today. …

The Stakes Of Smart Contracts, Mark Verstraete Jan 2019

The Stakes Of Smart Contracts, Mark Verstraete

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

By consensus, smart contracts are a revolution in private ordering: They offer guaranteed enforcement, independent of the whims of territorial governments; efficient formation and interpretation; immunity from external interference; and complete deference to the parties’ wishes. Each of these claims is a myth. While smart contracts present themselves as natural and neutral, they are in fact deeply politicized. The Legal Realists tore down the foundations of smart contracts almost a century ago. Advocates for them have not solved the problems of the past—they have forgotten them.

This Article offers a new critique of the optimism about smart contracts and desirability …

Sister Saints: Mormon Women Since The End Of Polygamy By Colleen Mcdannell, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich Jan 2019

Sister Saints: Mormon Women Since The End Of Polygamy By Colleen Mcdannell, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich

BYU Studies

Because of its freshness and clarity, I predict that Colleen McDannell’s Sister Saints, a history of modern Latter-day Saint women, will become a standard in religious studies courses and perhaps in book clubs among Latter-day Saints as well. It is unquestionably a “crossover” book. General readers will appreciate its lively stories and well-balanced arguments, and students at any level will profit from its detailed endnotes and chapter-by-chapter bibliographic essays. The book is fair-minded but never wimpy. It will provoke discussion in and out of the academy.

Clinical Practice With Children And Adolescents Involved In Bullying And Cyberbullying: Gleaning Guidelines From The Literature, David S. Byers, Faye Mishna, Carolyn Solo Jan 2019

Clinical Practice With Children And Adolescents Involved In Bullying And Cyberbullying: Gleaning Guidelines From The Literature, David S. Byers, Faye Mishna, Carolyn Solo

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Bullying and cyberbullying have received unprecedented international scholarly attention over the last three decades, including increasingly sophisticated descriptive models, measures of associated harm, and studies of whole-school intervention programs. Despite an abundance of articles related to bullying and cyberbullying, there has been relatively little attention to clinical practice with children and adolescents involved in bullying and cyberbullying. The purpose of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of peer-reviewed academic journal articles published between January 1990 and June 2018 pertaining to individual and group psychotherapy with clients involved in bullying and cyberbullying. Based on this review, we identify four …

Radical Aces: Building Resilience And Triggering Structural Change, Nancy E. Dowd Jan 2019

Radical Aces: Building Resilience And Triggering Structural Change, Nancy E. Dowd

UF Law Faculty Publications

Children’s developmental equality is critical to their opportunity and lifetime success. If we are to dismantle hierarchies among children, we must dismantle barriers placed in their way as well as insure affirmative support so that each child achieves their full developmental potential. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) framework identifies factors that create hurdles, not necessarily insurmountable, to children’s development. A higher ACEs number translates into geometrically increased challenges for individual children. Identifying ACEs, if used simply to count obstacles for children, does not contribute to the goal of children’s equality. Indeed, counting ACEs may have the converse effect, if identifying …

Enhancing Occupational Therapy’S Role In Reducing Hospital Readmission Rates For People With Cancer, Patrick Finnegan, Jared Skoog Jan 2019

Enhancing Occupational Therapy’S Role In Reducing Hospital Readmission Rates For People With Cancer, Patrick Finnegan, Jared Skoog

Occupational Therapy Capstones

People with a cancer history have a high likelihood of hospital readmission after discharge due to limitations in functional abilities (Burke et al., 2016; Lee, Williams, Lalor, Brown, & Haines, 2018). Occupational therapy has a significant role in preventing hospital readmissions among people with cancer because of the focus on promoting functional abilities (Player, Mackenzie, Willis, & Loh, 2014). However, occupational therapy is infrequently used for people with cancer. In one research study, only 32% of people with cancer used occupational therapy within two years of their diagnosis (Pergolotti, Cutchin, Weinberger, & Meyer, 2014). The purpose of this scholarly project …

Priming Learning To Improve Applicability Of Motivational Interviewing For Child Welfare Workers, Todd E. Sage Jan 2019

Priming Learning To Improve Applicability Of Motivational Interviewing For Child Welfare Workers, Todd E. Sage

Theses and Dissertations

This research explored the use of a cognition primer to increase the perception of applicability of Motivational Interviewing for child welfare workers. Andragogy informed the need for cognition priming as a way to increase participants’ receptiveness to training by making it more applicable to their direct practice. The theory of implementation science was used to inform how organizational supports impede or enhance the likelihood of child welfare workers using Motivational Interviewing in their practice.

A cross-sectional quasi-experimental mixed modal nonequivalent group design was used with a convenience sample of 41 front line child welfare workers from one Midwest urban county …
