Mimosa 2018/2019, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

Collaboration In Palliative Care Networks In Urban And Rural Regions Of Switzerland, R. Schweighoffer, N. Nagy, E. Reeves, B. Liebig

Department of Leadership, Policy, and Lifelong Learning

Due to aging populations, the need for seamless palliative care provision is of central interest for western societies. An essential aspect of palliative care delivery is the quality of collaboration amongst palliative care providers. Therefore, the current research is based on Bainbridge's conceptual framework, which provides an outline for the evaluation of palliative care provision. This study is the first one to investigate the predictive validity of spatial distribution on the quantity of interaction amongst various palliative care providers. Furthermore, based on the familiarity principle, we examine whether the extent of collaboration influences the perceived quality of collaboration among palliative …

Positive Youth Development: Developing, Implementing, And Sustaining Music-Based Services For Emerging Adults Experiencing Homelessness, Brian Kelly Jan 2019

Positive Youth Development: Developing, Implementing, And Sustaining Music-Based Services For Emerging Adults Experiencing Homelessness, Brian Kelly

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Research suggests that comprehensive services that consider the complex and interconnected needs of emerging adults experiencing homelessness may be more effective than interventions with a singular focus. There is little research that demonstrates how agencies that implement programs for individuals experiencing homelessness develop and sustain meaningful services for emerging adults, especially under conditions of increasing austerity. This study targets this gap in the literature by investigating how one transitional living program for emerging adults experiencing homelessness developed a music studio. Specifically, this study examines the factors and processes that were involved in developing, implementing, and sustaining the music studio. Findings …

Research Knowledge Of Advanced Standing And Traditional Students: Implications For Bsw Education, Jennifer L. K. Charles, Nathan H. Perkins, Christopher J. Ward, Melissa L. Stewart, Mary C. Secret

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

The advanced standing model of social work education, which affords graduate credit to qualified BSW students who pursue their MSW, has not been without issue or controversy, including questions of potential differences in performance on various educational outcomes. Specifically related to research curriculum, the importance of which is often not wholly embraced by students, this article reports the results of a secondary data analysis comparing research knowledge among advanced standing and traditional MSW students as well as among the various undergraduate majors (i.e., BSW, psychology, and sociology). Results suggest that research knowledge is similar and low across student subgroups. Important …

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

The purpose of this qualitative collective case study was to explore the experiences of four key internal stakeholders who are involved with a school-based child sexual abuse prevention program in a southeastern state in the United States. In order to explore the experiences of participants, in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted. After the data were collected, transcribed, and coded by a qualified research team, three main themes emerged from this study. These themes highlighted the importance of school-based child sexual abuse prevention education, various program impacts resulting from child sexual abuse prevention and intervention within a school setting, and barriers to …

“Being On Ssi Is A Full-Time Job:” How Ssi And Ssdi Beneficiaries Work Around And Within Labor Incentive Programs, Katie Savin

All Faculty Scholarship

Background and Purpose: Disabled individuals, their families, and communities are more likely to live in poverty than their non-disabled counterparts. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is social safety net that provides cash assistance programs through social insurance (Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI) and public assistance (Supplemental Security Income, or SSI) programs to people who meet eligibility criteria. The SSA offers work incentive programs that encourage enrolled disabled people to return to the workforce yet has found that these programs are infrequently utilized. This research aims to fill both knowledge and methodological gaps in the literature on why those support …

Clarifying The Identity Of Human Services Through A Content Analysis Of Programmatic Accreditation, Nicola A. Meade, Shuntay Z. Tarver, Mark C. Rehfuss

Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications

Throughout the United States, accrediting bodies serve as voluntary self-regulating entities designed to ensure accountability and quality assurance at the institutions that seek accreditation. To examine the impact of accreditation on the field of human services, a mixed-method content analysis was utilized. The 50 human services programs accredited by the Council for Standards on Human Services Education (CSHSE) as of July of 2018 were examined. Researchers also employed a triangulated approach to understand these programs through an analysis of Carnegie Classifications, regional accreditation agencies, and institutions programmatic websites. Results offer insight into how the CSHSE influences the professional identity of …

Keeping It In The Family: Minor Guardianship As Private Child Protection, Deirdre Smith Jan 2019

Keeping It In The Family: Minor Guardianship As Private Child Protection, Deirdre Smith

Faculty Publications

Due to the opioid use epidemic and an overwhelmed public child protection system, minor guardianship is an increasingly important tool for relative caregivers seeking to obtain legal authority regarding the children who come into their care because of a parent’s crisis. Yet minor guardianship originated in colonial law for an entirely different purpose: to protect legal orphans who had inherited property. Today’s guardianship laws are still based on this “orphan model” which does not fit today’s reality. This Article is the first to analyze how these outdated guardianship laws are being used as a form of “private child protection” and …

Understanding The Experiences Of School Social Workers In The Upper And Lower Peninsulas Of Michigan: Adolescent Mental Health And Suicidality, Paige Lancour Jan 2019

Understanding The Experiences Of School Social Workers In The Upper And Lower Peninsulas Of Michigan: Adolescent Mental Health And Suicidality, Paige Lancour

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Bullying and suicide is one of the most important contemporary issues among school-aged youth in America today. Chronic rates of mental health issues have stimulated increased focus on the role that school social workers have in tackling these issues. This thesis highlights the interconnections between school social worker roles, funding allocations, resource availability, and the prevalence of bullying and suicidality within schools. It does this by comparing the experiences of five school social workers in the rural Upper Peninsula and urban Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It does this through the analysis of interviews with these social workers and the identification …

The Use Of Generic Avoidant Coping Scales For Psychosocial Adaptation To Chronic Illness And Disability: A Systematic Review, Hanoch Livneh Jan 2019

The Use Of Generic Avoidant Coping Scales For Psychosocial Adaptation To Chronic Illness And Disability: A Systematic Review, Hanoch Livneh

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

This systematic review examined the validity of generic coping-with-stress measures in the relationships between avoidance-type coping and psychosocial adaptation to chronic illness and disability. Major data bases were searched for studies on the association between avoidance-type coping and psychosocial adaptation to chronic illness and disability. Findings indicated that reliance upon avoidance-type coping is linked to reports of poorer psychosocial adaptation. The veracity of these findings must be treated cautiously owing to conceptual, structural, psychometric, and other issues. Users of generic coping measures should consider these concerns prior to empirically investigating the link between generic avoidance-type coping measures and psychosocial adaptation …

Academic Match And The Tennessee Promise: Rural High School Counselors’ Perspectives, Charles Painter Jan 2019

Academic Match And The Tennessee Promise: Rural High School Counselors’ Perspectives, Charles Painter

Ed.D. Dissertations

The number of Tennessee students increasingly enrolled in postsecondary institutions since the introduction of Tennessee Promise (TN Promise); however, program requirements coupled with counselor behaviors related to TN Promise may lead to academic undermatch. This researcher used a qualitative research design to investigate the responses of high school guidance counselors in rural school districts in East Tennessee. Eight high school counselors participated in the study. Data analysis revealed that high school counselors encourage all eligible students to enroll in TN Promise without considering academic match. High school counselors used implicit actions and activities to enroll students in TN Promise. High …

La Sufrida: An Analysis Of The Social And Literary Archetype, Meleena Gil Jan 2019

La Sufrida: An Analysis Of The Social And Literary Archetype, Meleena Gil

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Latina women have been made to believe that their lives and desires are always secondary to the needs of men and children. As a result, many women have developed a martyr complex wherein the measure of their value is how much suffering they can endure in service to their family. There is subsequently a culture of self-sacrifice best exemplified by the archetype known as "la sufrida." This thesis explores the sufrida role in literature while using the history of the author's mother—a woman whose life can be "read" as that of a real sufrida— as a bridge between literature and …
