Jane Addams, Hull-House, And The “Danger” Of Women’S Work, Melanie L. Buffington, Courtnie N. Wolfgang, Pamela G. Taylor Jan 2019

Jane Addams, Hull-House, And The “Danger” Of Women’S Work, Melanie L. Buffington, Courtnie N. Wolfgang, Pamela G. Taylor

The Melanie Buffington Papers

In this paper, we investigate the work of Jane Addams and Hull-House, through Cornel West’s (1999) ideas of prophetic pragmatism. In accordance with West’s writings, we consider the importance of investigating the historical underpinnings of what we believe to be true, while at the same time questioning existing practices, and considering where and from whose work these practices originate. Addams and Hull-House were revolutionary during their time and their work resulted in major neighborhood and community reform. Additionally, through the open forums and frequent visitors to Hull-House, the work there influenced many of Addams’ contemporaries, including John Dewey. Yet, historically, …

Inspired by her own mindfulness practice, the researcher wanted to discover if mindfulness was as powerful a tool to other mindfulness teachers and educators. This phenomenological investigation explored the lived experiences of 11 secondary educators who self-identify as mindfulness practitioners. Through carefully constructed open-ended questions, the researcher was able to delve into …

Evaluating Cmsru Student Clinic Diabetic Patients’ Hemoglobin A1c Values, Adherence To Laboratory Services, And Potential Barriers To Care, Emily Rose

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Capstone Projects

Abstract

Medical schools often have student-run clinics that give medical students the opportunity to have increased clinical exposure. Often, the clinics provide free or a reduced cost of care for patients and target underserved populations. Current research regarding medical student-run clinics is few and far between. The research that does exist usually targets investigating the effect of the clinics on medical student education, while fewer studies exist that target investigating the actual care that patients receive. In order to increase the number of studies investigating patient care at student-run clinics, this retrospective chart review sought to determine whether Cooper Medical …

The Unnecessary Prescription Of Transcription: The Promise Of Audio-Coding In Interview Research, Paul Stonehouse Jan 2019

The Unnecessary Prescription Of Transcription: The Promise Of Audio-Coding In Interview Research, Paul Stonehouse

Research in Outdoor Education

Interviewing is a ubiquitous, although time-consuming, method in Outdoor Education research. Typical analysis requires a transcript of the entire recorded interview, on which a researcher creates and attaches codes to substantive sections. Qualitative software technology now allows the researcher to code directly on an audio-file (i.e. audio-coding), thus saving significant time. This article explains the differences between whole-interview transcription and audio-coding, while also comparing the strengths and weaknesses of each. The topic is examined via a detailed analysis of the available audio-coding literature and the author's own experience with Computer-Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) and audio-coding specifically. Although slow …

Sense Of Coherence And Caregivers Of Persons With Dementia, Kristina M. Childers Jan 2019

Sense Of Coherence And Caregivers Of Persons With Dementia, Kristina M. Childers

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Unpaid caregivers (CG) provide most of the assistance to persons with dementias (PWD) living in the community. This study explores the current state of knowledge regarding the concept of sense of coherence (SOC) and CG of PWD via a concept analysis. The identified defining attributes were health, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), CG burden, CG stress, coping as a strength, gender, and decreasing sense of CG coherence over the progression of the disease (dementia). Further study by health care professionals using clinical observations, large samples of respondents, a consistent theory, valid and reliable instruments used to measure defining attributes consistently, …

Special Needs Students In Public Preschool, Alexandra Vansickle, Alexandra Anna Vansickle

Integrated Studies

Preschool teachers that teach in a public preschool setting work with a significant amount of students with special needs. There are significant benefits from special needs students being exposed to a school environment at an early age, not just from the therapies provided by the institution, but also by the structure the school setting can provide. Teachers and administration play a vital role in preparing special needs students for the grade school classroom. The research based curriculums, structures, and classroom routines all play a role in the development of special needs children. By students with special needs attending a public …

National Service Works: A Review Of Federally Administered National Service Programs, Caitlin Szabo

National service in the United States permeates through most communities. Despite a significant number of participants, national service programs like AmeriCorps and Senior Corps are relatively unknown. People understand the concept of the Peace Corps – programs may refer to their AmeriCorps model as the “domestic version of the Peace Corps." National service programs engage individuals in providing services to their communities in exchange for intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. Individuals ranging from 18 to 99 join national service programs for a number of reasons, including a desire to “give back” or “make a difference.” People also find national service as …
