Background: Due to the nature of their work, state park workers receive substantial exposure to sunlight, putting them at an increased risk of developing skin cancer. Increased use of sun protection behaviors can reduce this risk. Objectives: Using the health belief model (HBM) as a theoretical framework, the purpose of this study was to assess factors associated with sun protection behaviors among state-park workers. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a convenience sample of participants were recruited from 23 state parks in the Southeastern …

The Experience Of Social Workers Who Utilize Therapy Dogs In Practice, Kathryn Jochems
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Animal assisted therapy, which incorporates animals into structured therapeutic interventions, and its use within social work has been shown to increase social interactions, communication, and the overall health and safety of clients (Nimer & Lundahl, 2007). However, there is a gap in the literature regarding the professional and personal experiences of individual social workers with incorporating certified therapy dogs into their practice. This study examined the approval process, perceived effects on practice, perceived effects outside of practice, and future implications of using therapy dogs in social work through the analysis of qualitative data from seven in-depth interviews with licensed social …

Health Coaching In Low Income, Underserved Patients With Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, Liane Tongol
Physician Assistant Capstones
Implementation of health care coaching into a treatment plan for T2DM low income/underserved patients may address barriers to managing their overall care (i.e. sociocultural factors, financial inaccessibility). Health care coaches are individuals who are involved in the chronic disease management of a patient that function as a source of support and to keep patients accountable for their decisions in overall management of their chronic disease. They play a vital role in empowering patients to take control of their health through education by establishing goals and helping patients navigate their current lifestyle in order to reach these goals.

A Step Towards Stronger Police-Youth Relationships: Examining How Youth And Police View The Role Of Police In Communities, Brooke O'Leary
Community Engagement Student Work
In an effort to identify barriers to stronger police-youth relationships, this study looks at whether there is a potential contrast in the way police officers and youth view the role of police in communities. An extensive review of literature was conducted to examine how policing practices may influence the way officers view their role in addition to the way youth perceptions of police are shaped. A deficit was revealed in the research on how youth view a police officer’s role, in particular. To answer this question, a sequential explanatory design was implemented. Multi-phase research was conducted through two slightly varying …

Intergenerational Space-Holding Within Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Other Gender & Sexual Minority Communities, Shaun William Kevin Connors
Community Engagement Student Work
This project examined the ways LGBTQ+ communities document, share, and connect to their histories. It supported an interactive, sensory learning-based workshop that fostered exploration and learning in LGBTQ+ and adjacent communities. The workshop was attended by a variety of participants who showed the markers of having engaged in a cultural third space while learning about and engaging with LGBTQ+ history-based information. Overall, the workshop was a resounding success and provided opportunities for further research and exploration into the connections between how people access their personal and cultural histories and what pathways are provided for them to do so.

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Children are impacted by their relationships with caregivers. The objective of this research was to develop awareness of the impact on children being cared for by caregivers with mental health issues by examining the experiences of individuals who had a caregiver with severe and persistent mental health issues during childhood. Researchers also gained insight on how social workers can be more supportive to children in these circumstances. The researchers conducted interviews with five participants, the recordings of which were then transcribed and coded to identify themes. Prevalent themes include critiques of available services, resiliency and challenges of family members as …

Identifying Potential Predictors Of Health Literacy And Steps Taken To Pursue Kidney Transplant Among African-Americans On Dialysis, Stacy Skelton
Identifying Potential Predictors Of Health Literacy And Steps Taken To Pursue Kidney Transplant Among African-Americans On Dialysis, Stacy Skelton
Dissertations
The dissertation attempts to address the disparity seen in all transplant centers today, the low number of African-American end-stage renal disease(ESRD) patients pursing kidney transplant as renal replacement therapy. Currently, there are two renal replacement options, dialysis or a kidney transplant. Research has shown that kidney transplant provides the best health care outcomes in terms of quality of life and decrease mortality. While African-Americans carry the burden of the disease by being four times more likely to have ESRD they only represent 1/3 of the kidney transplants done in the United States. There have been three attempts to increase access …

An Investigation Into Self-Efficacy And Academically Successful Minority Students Honors Thesis, Julie Clerge
An Investigation Into Self-Efficacy And Academically Successful Minority Students Honors Thesis, Julie Clerge
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Data from the National Center for Education Statistics have indicated that minority students have the fewest conferred degrees in the United States (Snyder, 2016). A review of the literature has attributed this phenomenon to various factors, including socioeconomic status (Harvey, 2016), parents' education level (Faye Carter, 2006) and lack of cultural congruity with the institution (Edman, 2008; Tierney, 1999; Trueba,1988). Ofcourse, there are minority students who defy the statistics and have achieved academic success. Other research has suggested that self-efficacy may be key to such success. The purpose of this study was to determine which factors are correlated with a …

Healthcare Students’ Abilities To Translate Interprofessional Education To Collaborative Practice, Sally A. Mccormack Tutt
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Interprofessional education is considered the first step to providing students with the knowledge and skill required to participate in interprofessional collaboration. The lingering question in research is if students can take these skills from the classroom to clinical practice. The answer to this question will help guide educators when developing effective IPE training. This quantitative, correlational study aimed to explore if healthcare students that participated in a two-part, case-based interprofessional educational session were able to transfer that skill to their clinical experience. Data was collected from healthcare students in the professions of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing. The participants …

Unheard Warriors: Creating An Effective Child Welfare Workforce, Yina Cordero
Community Engagement Student Work
As child abuse and neglect cases continue to increase in the United States, child welfare workers continue to experience challenges that have made it increasingly difficult to adequately care for the children and families in the child welfare system. Unfortunately, this has led to increased turnover rates among child welfare workers. Policy surrounding the child welfare workforce have pushed for changes that do not appropriately address issues such as the lack of education, training, and unsafe organizational environment that child welfare workers experience daily. An extensive overview of the current state of the child welfare workforce, has demonstrated a need …
Working Through The Smog: How White Individuals Develop Critical Consciousness Of White Saviorism, Jamie Willer-Kherbaoui
Working Through The Smog: How White Individuals Develop Critical Consciousness Of White Saviorism, Jamie Willer-Kherbaoui
Community Engagement Student Work
White saviorism, as a form of individual, cultural, and institutional racism, results in the systemic silencing and dehumanization of Brown and Black individuals by maintaining white privilege while simultaneously upholding systems of oppression. One step that can be taken to work toward eliminating white saviorism is to support white individuals in becoming more effective in their racial justice efforts, particularly with regard to changing the structures and systems upholding current power imbalances. This study seeks to understand how white individuals develop critical consciousness of white saviorism. In doing so, this study seeks to provide findings that can be utilized in …

Understanding The Role Of Relationship Maintenance In Enduring Couple Partnerships In Later Adulthood, Jill M. Chonody, Jacqui Gabb
Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Intimate relationships in later adulthood are understudied despite their positive association with health and well-being. This cross-sectional mixed methods study sought to redress this gap by investigating relationship maintenance in later adulthood. Our international sub-sample comprised 1,565 participants aged 55 + and in an ongoing relationship. Results from hierarchical multiple regression indicated that overall happiness with the relationship had the largest effect size on relationship maintenance, with 53% of the variance explained. Content analyses of open-ended questions identified companionship and laughter as some of the “best liked” aspects of the relationship. Housework/cooking and saying “I love you” were among the …
