Demographic Predictors And Reasons For Chronic Absenteeism Amongst Secondary Students With Disabilities, Cashea Holyfield Jun 2019

Demographic Predictors And Reasons For Chronic Absenteeism Amongst Secondary Students With Disabilities, Cashea Holyfield

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many students in secondary schools are increasingly impacted by chronic absenteeism. Researchers have consistently concluded that students who are chronically absent are likely to experience negative outcomes such as difficulties in academic achievement, learning, sociability, and mental health (London, Sanchez, & Castrechini, 2016). However, despite the implications of chronic absenteeism, research studies that primarily focus on assessing students with disabilities’ (SWDs) reasons for chronic absenteeism are relatively limited. Although there is some existing research that suggests that SWDs are frequently absent due to health-related reasons, transportation issues, and their perceptions of poor school climate (Erbstein, 2014; Humm-Brundage, Castillo, & Batsche, …

Academic Service Learning And Society: From Individual To Institutional, Niall Hegarty, John P. Angelidis

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This paper examines how Academic Service Learning (ASL) has gone from being an initiative by individual faculty to being institutionalized by universities as means to promote learning, pursue mission, and impact society. It outlines various uses of ASL by individual faculty and examines its progression into a university sponsored service-learning vessel of vision and mission. Its use acknowledges the interconnectedness of universities and society and emphasizes the need and obligation that universities feel, or should feel, in contributing to the betterment of the world we live in. In terms of being a university-sponsored initiative it highlights its use in the …

A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study Of Clinicians’ Use Of Psychotherapy Techniques During 5 Years Of A System-Wide Effort To Implement Evidence-Based Practices In Philadelphia, Nathaniel J. Williams

Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Little work investigates the effect of behavioral health system efforts to increase use of evidence-based practices or how organizational characteristics moderate the effect of these efforts. The objective of this study was to investigate clinician practice change in a system encouraging implementation of evidence-based practices over 5 years and how organizational characteristics moderate this effect. We hypothesized that evidence-based techniques would increase over time, whereas use of non-evidence-based techniques would remain static.

Method: Using a repeated cross-sectional design, data were collected three times from 2013 to 2017 in Philadelphia’s public behavioral health system. Clinicians from 20 behavioral health outpatient …

Threats To Teaching: An Investigation Into The Constructs Of Compassion Fatigue In The Classroom, April M. Steen Jun 2019

Threats To Teaching: An Investigation Into The Constructs Of Compassion Fatigue In The Classroom, April M. Steen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A group of suburban/rural general and special education teachers (n = 260) responded to an electronic survey. The survey was designed to measure the prevalence of an under researched area of compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among teachers working in suburban/rural public schools. The current study hypothesized that the relationship among compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, demographic variables, and teacher stress factors (time management, discipline, motivation, professional distress, and professional investment) would correlate with an increase in compassion fatigue (burnout and secondary traumatic stress) for general and special education teachers working in suburban/rural public schools; furthermore, it predicted a positive correlation …

Journal of Multilingual Education Research

This study evaluated the perceptions of graduates from a master’s level teacher education program on the effectiveness of their program that incorporated evidence-based practices (EBPs). Specifically, the study explored how the newly revised teacher education curriculum assisted them in becoming qualified in their certification areas. Seventeen graduates participated in the study. Using a checklist graduates indicated their use of various EBPs in three categories in classrooms with culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students. They also engaged in a mini-focus group to discuss their perceptions of the educational experiences they participated in. The results revealed that the revised curriculum equipped graduates …

Training In Implementation Practice Leadership (Triple): Evaluation Of A Novel Practice Change Strategy In Behavioral Health Organizations, Enola Proctor, Alex T Ramsey, Matthew T Brown, Sara Malone, Cole Hooley, Virginia Mckay

Open Access Publications

BACKGROUND: Effective leadership for organizational change is critical to the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs). As organizational leaders in behavioral health organizations often are promoted from within the agency for their long-standing, effective work as counselors, they may lack formal training in leadership, management, or practice change. This study assesses a novel implementation leadership training designed to promote leadership skills and successful organizational change specific to EBP implementation.

METHODS: We conducted a pre-post outcome evaluation of the Training in Implementation Practice Leadership (TRIPLE), delivered via three in-person, half-day training sessions, with interim coaching and technical support. Sixteen mid-level leaders (75% …

Social Worked-Examples Technique To Enhance Student Engagement In Program Visualization, Abdullah Al-Sakkaf, Mazni Omar, Mazida Ahmad Jun 2019

Social Worked-Examples Technique To Enhance Student Engagement In Program Visualization, Abdullah Al-Sakkaf, Mazni Omar, Mazida Ahmad

Baghdad Science Journal

Learning programming is among the top challenges in computer science education. A part of that, program visualization (PV) is used as a tool to overcome the high failure and drop-out rates in an introductory programming course. Nevertheless, there are rising concerns about the effectiveness of the existing PV tools following the mixed results derived from various studies. Student engagement is also considered a vital factor in building a successful PV, while it is also an important part of the learning process in general. Several techniques have been introduced to enhance PV engagement; however, student engagement with PV is still challenging. …

Barbara Sourkes Oral History. Jun 2019

Barbara Sourkes Oral History.

Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project

Dr. Sourkes attributes her career beginnings in pediatric palliative care to a "confluence" of personal and professional experiences. She describes knowing a few "pioneering" health professionals in the 1970s and 1980s. In different fields and different countries, these "first-generation" professionals were all working on their own to commonly define pediatric palliative care and its place in healthcare. Dr. Sourkes recounts the early days when, in many hospitals, a handful of social workers took on all the psychosocial care of hundreds of children and families in pediatric hematology/oncology. Dr. Sourkes briefly discusses working with Balfour Mount, MD when a group at …

Perspectives Of Teachers And Social Workers On Sexual Exploitation Of Adolescent Students In Tanzania, Budeba Petro Mlyakado

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Sexual exploitation of children and adolescents is a global concern. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of empirical studies in Tanzania that systematically examine stakeholders’ views on this phenomenon. Using qualitative data from eight focus group discussions (FGDs), this study explores perspectives of teachers and social workers on sexual exploitation of adolescent students. The respondents of this study were conveniently selected from six secondary schools and two social welfare departments in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza regions of Tanzania. The study intended to generate insights for relevant policy and practices towards mitigating the plights of sexual exploitation. Results indicate that teachers …

Adopting Civil Damages: Wrongful Family Separation In Adoption, Malinda L. Seymore Jun 2019

Adopting Civil Damages: Wrongful Family Separation In Adoption, Malinda L. Seymore

Washington and Lee Law Review

The Trump Administration’s new immigration policy of family separation at the U.S./Mexico border rocked the summer of 2018. Yet family separation is the prerequisite to every legal adoption. The circumstances are different, of course. In legal adoption, the biological parents are provided with all the constitutional protections required in involuntary termination of parental rights, or they have voluntarily consented to family separation. But what happens when that family separation is wrongful, when the birth mother’s consent is not voluntary, or when the birth father’s wishes to parent are ignored? In theory, the child can be returned to the birth parents …

Articulating The Value Of Our Daily Work: An Initial Discussion Of The Assessment Challenges Of Engineering Librarians, Amy G. Buhler, Margaret Phillips, Amy Van Epps

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

Engineering librarians need to assess the effectiveness of our library instruction and outreach for many reasons, including communicating library value to institutional stakeholders and making impactful contributions to the scholarly literature. However, as practitioners, most librarians have not been formally educated in research design, data collection, and data analysis. To increase our skills and knowledge and to better align with various publication expectations and guidelines (e.g., ELD Author Guidelines), this panel will lead a discussion on library assessment needs with regard to research design, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination and discovery. The goal of the panel is to …

Culturally Responsive Social Work Methods For Use With Indigenous Peoples, Sara Davidson Cowling Jun 2019

Culturally Responsive Social Work Methods For Use With Indigenous Peoples, Sara Davidson Cowling

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

The history of the American social work profession and its interactions with Indigenous people is fraught with cultural erasure. Social workers have been complicit and outright participatory in various forms of settler state violence, especially in the form of forced cultural assimilation through the Indian Adoption Project and Indian Residential schools. While these institutions are now closed, and federal law ostensibly prevents such harms from recurring, Indigenous people are often rightfully suspect of social workers and the work they do. To avoid perpetuating American settler state violence, social workers need to approach their work with a solid analysis of the …

Working Paper No. 05, Proudhon, Bakunin And Anarcho-Socialism, Lauren Sweger-Hollingsworth Jun 2019

Working Paper No. 05, Proudhon, Bakunin And Anarcho-Socialism, Lauren Sweger-Hollingsworth

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and Mikhail Bakunin advanced ideas supporting what can be identified as anarcho-socialism, and the distinctness in their approaches can also be associated with splits that emerged with the First International Workingmen’s Association. For Proudhon, the institution of property entrenches inequality. In Proudhon’s judgement, society must orient towards advancing independence, proportionality, equality, and individual autonomy without limitations from legal structures. In Bakunin’s anarcho-socialist view, society must reject all forms of authority. In Bakunin’s conception of society, economic and political structures must be constructed from base to summit, founded upon the rights of free …

Working Paper No. 31, Marx And Proudhon: Two Visions Of Socialism, Lillian Garcia Jun 2019

Working Paper No. 31, Marx And Proudhon: Two Visions Of Socialism, Lillian Garcia

Working Papers in Economics

This inquiry seeks to establish that Karl Marx and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon espoused fundamentally different visions of socialism. Marx regarded Proudhon with initial enthusiasm and joined the left at large in celebrating his 1840 essay, What is Property? However, in 1846, when Proudhon attempted to solve the problems of capitalism in his work, System of Economic of Contradictions or The Philosophy of Poverty, Marx took to his pen for an unsparing attack, authoring his The Poverty of Philosophy. At the crux of their split were two analyses of the status of labor and two competing prescriptions for change. While …

Further Developments Of The Santa Clara Ethics Questionnaire, Thomas G. Plante, Anna Mccreadie Jun 2019

Further Developments Of The Santa Clara Ethics Questionnaire, Thomas G. Plante, Anna Mccreadie

Psychology

Ethics and ethical decision-making are critically important for high-functioning communities, including those on college campuses. This brief paper provides further research support for the Santa Clara Ethics Questionnaire, a brief and no-cost 10-item questionnaire assessing general ethics. The questionnaire was administered to 329 university students along with several other measures to assess convergent and divergent validity. Results suggest that compassion, hope, and self-esteem predict about one-third of the variance in ethics scores. Implications for future research and use are discussed.

Betty Davies Oral History. Jun 2019

Betty Davies Oral History.

Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project

Dr. Betty Davies begins with several stories about her first dying patients as a young professional and the gaps in both her education and the humanity about how death was handled in the hospital setting. Dr. Davies felt that cultivating dialogue about death, dying, and bereavement was a very important "human activity," that was being neglected. Early into her career, Dr. Davies connected with other likeminded professionals who supported her while she endeavored to give trainings and workshops. She then recalls her work in developing Canuck Place as well as her contributions to research, programs, and the international knowledge base …
