The Law Of Moses: An Overview, Dan Belnap
The Law Of Moses: An Overview, Dan Belnap
Faculty Publications
During the last week of his life, Christ was confronted by a group of Jewish authorities who asked him, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?” (Matthew 22:36). Christ’s answer, that one should love God with all one’s heart, soul, and might (Deuteronomy 6:5), as well as one’s neighbor as oneself (Leviticus 19:18), was then followed by the assertion “On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22:40). Clearly, in Christ’s day the law of Moses was regarded as providing crucial instruction regarding one’s behavior both with one’s fellow man and with God, and …
The Dead Sea Scrolls And The New Testament, Dana M. Pike
The Dead Sea Scrolls And The New Testament, Dana M. Pike
Faculty Publications
Since their initial discovery in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls have generated a great deal ofinterest, ranging from responsible scholarly inquiry to public sensationalism.1 During the years 1947–1956, local Bedouin and eventually archaeologists found scrolls and primarily scroll fragments (many thousands of them) in eleven caves proximate to the small archaeological site of Qumran, near the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. Stories of the initial discovery of major scrolls by Bedouin cousins in what is now called Qumran Cave 1 vary in certain details and have been often recounted, as have stories about the intrigue involved in the authentication …
Who Is Paying For God: A Thematic Analysis Of Henry Arthur Jones's Religious Plays In Relation To The Modernist Trend, Jay Tyler Sharma
Who Is Paying For God: A Thematic Analysis Of Henry Arthur Jones's Religious Plays In Relation To The Modernist Trend, Jay Tyler Sharma
All Master's Theses
This thesis project argues for the value of Henry Arthur Jones’s work in the late 1890s and seeks to illustrate that Jones’s contribution to the larger Modernist movement in the theatre. Using a close textual analysis of Jones’s plays Michael and His Lost Angel, Judah, and Saints and Sinners, this project examines Jones’s use of popular theatrical genres to provide commentary on the religious and fiscal tensions in the surrounding Victorian society. The critical commentary in Jones’s plays is then used to draw a connection between Jones’s work and his fight for dramatists to have greater freedom in the topics …
Science, Social Critique, And The Need For Ethics, Peter Woodford, Alecia Carter
Science, Social Critique, And The Need For Ethics, Peter Woodford, Alecia Carter
Animal Sentience
Marino & Merskin’s target article on the cognitive and psychological capacities of sheep commendably aims to use science to critique human practice. However, the article fails to make specific recommendations about how human-sheep relations should change going forward. We also underscore two problematic assumptions highlighted by other commentators: (1) that cognitive complexity is important to the case for the moral status of non-human animals and (2) that the way humans use and treat animals is caused by our conception of animals’ capacities. Scientists should engage more with philosophy and ethical theory to articulate the implications of animal capacities for human …

The Effect Of Religion On Trait Priority In Potential Partners In Short And Long Term Relationships, Sara K. Glass
The Effect Of Religion On Trait Priority In Potential Partners In Short And Long Term Relationships, Sara K. Glass
Honors Theses
This study builds upon previous research that demonstrates how various demographic characteristics, as well as relationship type, affects trait preferences for potential mate partners. This study also explores the potential effects of religious affiliation and religiosity on trait preferences, as no previous research explicitly tests how individuals’ religious affiliation or strength of religiosity influences their rank ordering of potential partner traits. Seven hypotheses were proposed, as well as four points of exploration regarding sexuality, relationship status, religious affiliation, and race were proposed. Hypotheses 1, which predicted that women will rank financial stability higher than men and that men will rank …

Trinity Lutheran Church V. Comer: Playing "In The Joints" And On The Playground, Gabrielle Gollomp
Emory Law Journal
In Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia v. Comer, the Supreme Court determined that a state could not deny a church generally available benefits because of its religious character. Before Trinity Lutheran, the Supreme Court consistently recognized the existence of a ¿play in the joints¿ between the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause, meaning some state government actions are neither prohibited by the Establishment Clause nor required by the Free Exercise Clause. Issues concerning tax exemptions and state funding are consistently held to fall within the ¿play in the joints,¿ which permits state and local governments to refuse to fund religious …

The Philosopher's Journey: A Chapter In Kindness And Animals, Vaughn E. Sayers
The Philosopher's Journey: A Chapter In Kindness And Animals, Vaughn E. Sayers
UNF Undergraduate Capstone Projects and Honors Theses
We each are presented with a choice; do we remain in the cave of ignorance or embark on the philosopher’s journey. Your choice will determine the way in which you interpret this paper. However, I will confidently make the assumption that you, like myself, desire to embrace an existence guided by the light of wisdom. This thesis is one of many chapters in the philosopher’s journey, dealing with animals and (cutting through the jargon) kindness. I have found that a lot of scholarship on animal ethics acknowledges a truth, but does not acknowledge that the application of such a truth …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
This study utilized dissertation bibliographies produced at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, a STEM-oriented university, to ascertain how well Purdue’s Humanities, Social Science, and Education (HSSE) Library supports doctoral research. To examine a critical mass of data, the authors gathered all the bibliographies of dissertations written in 11 disciplines within the College of Liberal Arts in 2011 and 2015. Data for each citation included year of publication, language, format type, and local availability in print or digitally. Revealing disciplinary trends in using sources, this study provided critical information for reconceptualizing the HSSE Library’s orientation to learning and research and …
The Seed Of Transformation: A Disorientation Index, Tonya Gander Ensign
The Seed Of Transformation: A Disorientation Index, Tonya Gander Ensign
Theses and Dissertations
Transformation is all around us. It spans geography, time, cultures, religions and disciplines. Throughout life, events occur when something we thought was certain becomes uncertain and our current mental model cannot make sense of it. This experience causes disorientation and offers a choice: to transform our perspective or remain unchanged. When we revise our mental model to make meaning of our experience we are transforming our perspective. This is a special type of learning called transformative learning (Mezirow, 1978a, 1991a). Across disciplines, a disorienting experience is widely believed to be a catalyst for transformation, however, aspects of this experience remain …

Tales Of The Great Jewish Migration: Memory, Assimilation, And Unsettled Matrimony, Natasha Holtman
Tales Of The Great Jewish Migration: Memory, Assimilation, And Unsettled Matrimony, Natasha Holtman
History Honors Projects
Between 1880 and 1910, over a million Russian Jews left the Pale of Settlement for the United States in a life-altering wave of immigration. What changes did immigration bring about, and how? To answer these questions, I considered diverse voices of immigrants found in letters, memoirs and short stories, approaching each source as a new layer of interpretation. I found patterns in immigrants' aims, personal commitments and newcomer needs. These patterns affected individuals' decisions to change or preserve tradition. Particularly in the area of matrimony, immigrant partnerships were marked by restless uncertainty.

Second Wind, Anne A. Yoncha
Second Wind, Anne A. Yoncha
Graduate Student Portfolios, Professional Papers, and Capstone Projects
Second Wind is a kinetic, responsive art installation which examines invisible processes taking place in and around a Ponderosa pine tree. Wind speed data, measured at 20', 25', 30', 35', and 40' in the canopy of a Ponderosa on the University of Montana campus, is translated into the gallery in real time using two Raspberry Pi single-board computers. This data determines the velocity of five fans in the gallery. Each fan interacts with a suspended vellum paper structure which moves more or less depending on wind speed. The vellum is painted with an ink made of fermented pine needles from …

Living The Bhagavad Gita At Gandhi's Ashrams, Karline Mclain

The Bhagavad Gita is a philosophical Hindu scripture in which the god Krishna imparts lessons to the warrior prince Arjuna about sacred duty (dharma) and the path to spiritual liberation (moksha). This classical scripture has had a long and active interpretive life, and by the 19th century it had come to be regarded as a core text, if not the core text, of Hinduism. During the colonial period, interpretations of the Bhagavad Gita considered the relevance of Krishna’s lessons to Arjuna in the context of British colonial rule. While some Indians read a call to arms into their interpretation of …

Creative Lesson Planning With College And Career Readiness Standards: Thoughts From The Curriculum Library, Margaret Robillard
Creative Lesson Planning With College And Career Readiness Standards: Thoughts From The Curriculum Library, Margaret Robillard
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
Preservice teachers carefully craft lesson plans to meet the academic needs of elementary through high school students in their fieldwork. They rely in part on finding high quality texts and trade books that relate to College and Career Readiness Standards (CCR). While college curriculum libraries are excellent sources for materials, their organization often is not aligned with national curriculum academic standards. Preservice teachers therefore sometimes struggle to find appropriate analog resources to create lesson plans that integrate disciplinary literacy. This research utilizes CCR standards, survey data from stakeholders, and library organizational research literature to create a categorization system based on …

The Papal Encyclical Ad Extremas (1893):The Call For An Indigenous Indian Clergy, Its Effects Upon Thecatholic Church In India, And Its Description Of Indian Religions, Andrew Unsworth
Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies
Ad Extremas, an encyclical epistle issued by Pope Leo XIII, gives a rare insight into the official opinion of the Catholic Church with regard to India’s indigenous religious traditions at the close of the nineteenth century. By means of a historical and textual analysis of the document, this essay offers a critical assessment of its contents facilitating a better appreciation of the ecclesial transition that occurred between the pontificate of Leo XIII and the promulgation of those texts of the Second Vatican Council that made reference to Hinduism.
