“And They Shall Eat Until They Are Satisfied:” Critical Disability Theory And Widows, Orphans, Aliens, And Levites In The Book Of Deuteronomy, Cheryl Strimple Aug 2019

“And They Shall Eat Until They Are Satisfied:” Critical Disability Theory And Widows, Orphans, Aliens, And Levites In The Book Of Deuteronomy, Cheryl Strimple

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation considers the construction of widows, orphans, aliens, and Levites in deuteronomic law. Making use of multiple methodologies, literary criticism, Disability Studies, and food and foodway studies, this study argues that, in Deuteronomy, the members of the formulaic reference, “the alien, the orphan, and the widow,” often associated with “the Levite” operate as cultic functionaries and participate in cultic meals in order to secure stability and continuing abundance in the land for all of Israel.

Augustine's Concept Of Volition And Its Significance For The Doctrine Of Original Sin, Scot Bontrager Aug 2019

Augustine's Concept Of Volition And Its Significance For The Doctrine Of Original Sin, Scot Bontrager

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

Augustine has been credited as the inventor of the concept of volition (the will), and yet it is not clear from this claim exactly what his concept of volition is. His understanding of the human person, especially his theory of volition, has had profound implications for much of the theological work which followed. This thesis examines various concepts which influenced Augustine’s notion of volition, contemporary ways of understanding volition, and what Augustine himself believed about it. Since the will is central to Augustine’s description of the human person and the human condition a careful examination of the concept is necessary …

Keeping The Equity, Inclusion, And Diversity Conversations Going, Mona Ramonetti, Victoria Pilato Aug 2019

Keeping The Equity, Inclusion, And Diversity Conversations Going, Mona Ramonetti, Victoria Pilato

Urban Library Journal

This article focuses on the challenges and successes Stony Brook University Libraries’ Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Committee encountered from its inception in 2017 to the present. The formation of this committee was in response to a new university-wide program. A pool of more than 80 library personnel made quick and thoughtful decisions to determine the composition of the Committee. In the months that followed, members learned to navigate the challenges of goal setting, collaborating with others outside the library, funding, event planning, and marketing. One of the primary goals of the Committee was to initiate and maintain conversations and collaborations …

Haiti’S Pact With The Devil?: Bwa Kayiman, Haitian Protestant Views Of Vodou, And The Future Of Haiti, Bertin M. Louis Jr. Aug 2019

Haiti’S Pact With The Devil?: Bwa Kayiman, Haitian Protestant Views Of Vodou, And The Future Of Haiti, Bertin M. Louis Jr.

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This essay uses ethnographic research conducted among Haitian Protestants in the Bahamas in 2005 and 2012 plus internet resources to document the belief among Haitian Protestants (Haitians who practice Protestant forms of Christianity) that Haiti supposedly made a pact with the Devil (Satan) as the result of Bwa Kayiman, a Vodou ceremony that launched the Haitian Revolution (1791–1803). Vodou is the syncretized religion indigenous to Haiti. I argue that this interpretation of Bwa Kayiman is an extension of the negative effects of the globalization of American Fundamentalist Christianity in Haiti and, by extension, peoples of African descent and the …

Singing As English Protestants: The Whole Booke Of Psalmes’ Theology Of Music, Samantha Arten Aug 2019

Singing As English Protestants: The Whole Booke Of Psalmes’ Theology Of Music, Samantha Arten

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

The Whole Booke of Psalmes, first published in 1562, became the most visible symbol of English Protestant music-making through its immense popularity and its perceived Protestant authority and monarchical authorization, and the psalter was directly responsible for the formation of the Church of England’s musical culture. Through close reading of the hymnal’s words about music—the versified texts of the psalms themselves, particularly the paraphrases of those psalms that speak directly about music, singing, worship, and instruments, and also other material including the versified hymns and prefatory matter—I argue that the WBP promoted a particular theology of music in Reformation …

Interreligious Dialogue In The Religious Styles Perspective: A Qualitative Analysis Of Instrumental Cases, Sally Swanson Aug 2019

Interreligious Dialogue In The Religious Styles Perspective: A Qualitative Analysis Of Instrumental Cases, Sally Swanson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Interreligious dialogue (IRD) is considered a sacred religious practice ([PCID], 2017; Merdjanova, 2016) and has become increasingly present in interventions to address conflict resulting from exposure to religious diversity (Cornille, 2013; Patel, 2018). However, few empirical efforts have examined the efficacy and outcomes of IRD. A grounded theory approach (Creswell & Poth, 2017) is well-suited to describe the nuanced role of religion in intergroup processes in major theoretical frameworks. Purposeful sampling (Patton, 2005) of 20 cases were selected from archival data of Faith Development Interviews (Streib & Keller, 2018) collected as part of the Developmental change in Spirituality project. Experiences …

Kabbala, Christians, And Jews: An Examination Of The Rise And Fall Of Peculiar Relationships That Developed Between Christian Elites And Jewish Scholars In Renaissance Italy, Glenda Leona Dannenfelser Aug 2019

Kabbala, Christians, And Jews: An Examination Of The Rise And Fall Of Peculiar Relationships That Developed Between Christian Elites And Jewish Scholars In Renaissance Italy, Glenda Leona Dannenfelser

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Italian Renaissance was to many of its contemporaries a golden age. It was unarguably a phenomenal time in European history. The sharing of intellectual ideas and innovations during this period permanently changed the world. Knowledge was spread across Europe at an unprecedented pace and intellectual minds were greatly expanded from both new and old discoveries. During this period, classical works were fortuitously unearthed and swiftly consumed for their hoary wisdom and guidance. Among these works were found ancient productions related to various occult ideas and practices such as alchemy and magic. A subset of the prominent group of Italian …

Hating Evil: Understanding The Role Of Evil In Interpersonal Hate, Carmen Merrick Aug 2019

Hating Evil: Understanding The Role Of Evil In Interpersonal Hate, Carmen Merrick

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research has demonstrated that hate is a protective emotional response to perceived evil, yet the dimensions by which people perceive evil have not been clearly identified. Research has also indicated that it is evil to feel hate, which presents an interesting paradox: if hate protects us from evil, then how can it be evil to feel hate? The present research attempts to identify the dimensions of evil and elucidate the relationship between hate and evil by comparing it to the relationship between dislike and evil. Study 1 tested how participants identified evil in third person scenarios. As predicted, evil was …

Understanding The Effects Of A Mindful Yoga Intervention On The Psychological Well-Being Of Student Veterans, María Del Mar Chavarría Soto Aug 2019

Understanding The Effects Of A Mindful Yoga Intervention On The Psychological Well-Being Of Student Veterans, María Del Mar Chavarría Soto

Dissertations

Transitioning from military culture to a civilian and student environment can become a challenge for many military members. Additionally, high levels of anxiety, depression, PTSD and elevated percentages of suicidal thoughts have been increasing for this population (Rudd, Goulding, & Bryan, 2011). These social concerns and mental health struggles for this population highlight the urgency in the provision of more resources and efforts to address their psychological well-being (PWB) and increase the chances of success in the college environment. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the influence of a mindful yoga intervention on the …

The Neglected Facsimile: An Examination And Comparative Study Of Facsimile No. 3 Of The Book Of Abraham, Quinten Zehn Barney Aug 2019

The Neglected Facsimile: An Examination And Comparative Study Of Facsimile No. 3 Of The Book Of Abraham, Quinten Zehn Barney

Theses and Dissertations

Facsimile No. 3 of the Book of Abraham contains parallels to other Egyptian throne scenes found elsewhere, which fact has led many to pass Facsimile No. 3 off as commonplace. However, the lack of a broad comparative study examining these types of scenes in their varying contexts has rendered most conclusions regarding Facsimile No. 3 superficial at best. Hugh Nibley was perhaps the first to notice this problem, arguing that "The great abundance of pictures of the Facsimile No. 3 variety calls for the widest possible comparative study. In a case like this the student's first obligation is to compare, …

The Date Of The Muratorian Fragment: An Inference To The Best Explanation, John F. Lingelbach Aug 2019

The Date Of The Muratorian Fragment: An Inference To The Best Explanation, John F. Lingelbach

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Three hundred years after its discovery, scholars find themselves unable to identify the more likely of the two hypotheses regarding the date of the Muratorian Fragment, whether it is a late second- to early third-century composition or a fourth-century composition. In light of the lingering problem of the Muratorian Fragment’s date and its significance, a new study has been conducted, and this dissertation features an exposition of that study’s conduct and findings. The study sought to break the impasse and identify the more likely of the two hypotheses regarding the date of the Fragment—that it is either a late second- …

Of Faith And Faithlessness: Adaptive Fidelity In Shusaku Endo's Martin Scorsese's Silence, Teng-Kuan Ng Aug 2019

Of Faith And Faithlessness: Adaptive Fidelity In Shusaku Endo's Martin Scorsese's Silence, Teng-Kuan Ng

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Adapted from the 1966 novel by the Japanese Catholic writer Shusaku Endo, Martin Scorsese’s Silence offers a timely occasion for expanding the critical discourse on adaptive fidelity. This article explores the ways that both texts draw from historical and scriptural sources within the Christian tradition—most notably the biblical tale of Judas—to clarify the meaning of faith in their respective contexts. Employing Andre Bazin’s theory of adaptation, I argue that alongside their source texts, both novel and film compose an intertextual ‘ideal construct’ of religious fidelity as dynamically lived across time and place, a fidelity paradoxically performed via various modes and …

The Reality And Non-Peculiarity Of The Yoruba's Belief In Reincarnation: Aye Keji Exemplified, Adagbada Olufadekemi Jul 2019

The Reality And Non-Peculiarity Of The Yoruba's Belief In Reincarnation: Aye Keji Exemplified, Adagbada Olufadekemi

International Review of Humanities Studies

Everyone knows that death is the inevitable end of man. What plagues the mind of many, consciously or otherwise, is the question of what happens to man when he breaths his last breath. While some are of the opinion that after death comes judgment; a determinant of whether one goes to eternal blissful domains, or into everlasting torment; depending on whether he had lived piously or otherwise, while on earth. Another school of thought opines that the soul of the dead will reincarnate by taking abode in a new physical body, born as a new baby and live another normal …

Slipping Into The Shadows Of Kyai’S Figures: Women Participation In Indonesian Pesantren’S Web Of Power, Mina Elfira Jul 2019

Slipping Into The Shadows Of Kyai’S Figures: Women Participation In Indonesian Pesantren’S Web Of Power, Mina Elfira

International Review of Humanities Studies

This paper explores women‟s efforts in challenging male authority within Indonesian pesantren (Islamic education institution). Historically, pesantren tradition did not involved women in its social and religious affairs, and the full authority was in the hand of Kyai (owner and leader of Pesantren). Later on, women, through figures of Nyai (wife, or daughters of Kyai), have started to get involve in pesantren‟s life by helping Kyai in managing pesantren‟s daily life, especially, in taking care of female santri (students). The paper investigates what kind of negotiations, conducted by these women, in dealing with pesantren‟s patriarchal attitude so they can more …

The Cultural Evolution Of Local Islamic Values On The Muludan Tradition In Cirebon: A Memetics Perspective, Eko Wijayanto, Siti Rohmah Soekarba Jul 2019

The Cultural Evolution Of Local Islamic Values On The Muludan Tradition In Cirebon: A Memetics Perspective, Eko Wijayanto, Siti Rohmah Soekarba

International Review of Humanities Studies

The Muludan is a tradition conducted by the Royal family in Cirebon Sultanate on the third month of the Islamic calendar (Rabi' al-awwal) to mark the celebration of the prophet Muhammad's birthday. Thousands of people from some places participate in this tradition. This paper is aimed to elaborate the cultural evolution theory (memetics) introduced by Richard Dawkings which is used to interpret the Muludan tradition as a meme. The role of the agent will be considered as a vector, not an actor. In the meantime, the Muludan can be defined not only as a religious ritual but also as a …

Depaul University Changes And Grows: 1950–1990, Albert Erlebacher Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

Albert Erlebacher explores the main issues, changes, and growth that DePaul University experienced between 1950, when it almost lost its accreditation, and 1990, when it emerged as a major American Catholic university. DePaul’s expansion of its campus, the reforms and innovations made to its curricula, and the development of new programs and schools are discussed in detail. Changes in university leadership and governance are also described. DePaul’s experiences are placed within the broader context of changes and challenges occurring in American Catholic higher education during this time, especially as they relate to the Second Vatican Council. Additionally, DePaul needed to …

Iron Tonics: Tracing The Development From Classical To Iatrochemical Formulations In Ayurveda, Dagmar Wujastyk Jul 2019

Iron Tonics: Tracing The Development From Classical To Iatrochemical Formulations In Ayurveda, Dagmar Wujastyk

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Around the eleventh century CE, Sanskrit medical texts began to record profound changes in the methods used for drug manufacture. New substances, especially metallic and non-metallic minerals, were added to the ayurvedic pharmacopoeia or were given new prominence. More significantly, however, new ways of processing raw materials were introduced that were thought to make them fit for medical use. Most of the new, but also many of the traditional substances were now put through a series of complicated, multistage processes before they were used as components of compound medicines. In this article, I will use the example of recipes for …

The Soteriological Context Of A Tibetan Oracle, Katarina Turpeinen Jul 2019

The Soteriological Context Of A Tibetan Oracle, Katarina Turpeinen

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This paper contributes to the study of Tibetan oracles by analyzing a distinctive case of a contemporary Tibetan oracle living in exile in India. The oracular practice and personal history of Lhamo, or ‘Goddess,’ present several unusual features compared to other ethnographic accounts of Tibetan oracles. The ritual of possession is performed behind closed doors hidden from clients, and the medium typically engages in oracular ingestion multiple times during every trance. Her trance sessions also appear orderly and lack an intermediary figure who decodes the oracle’s enigmatic statements. What do these features of her oracular activities illustrate? How do they …
