Creating And Contesting Latter-Day Saint Pilgrimage To Nauvoo, Illinois, Scott Esplin
Creating And Contesting Latter-Day Saint Pilgrimage To Nauvoo, Illinois, Scott Esplin
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (frequently referred to as Latter-day Saints or Mormons) share with other faiths a desire to celebrate sites significant to their founding. By memorialising religious sacred space, the Church of Jesus Christ has created a desire among many of its more than sixteen million members to retrace the steps of their early faith leaders as pilgrims. As with other religious sites around the world, Latter-day Saint pilgrimage destinations have also become scenes of contestation. Churches that divided from the original movement offer rival interpretations of the its history and beliefs, leading …

The Pink Triangle As An Interruptive Symbol, Marnie Rorholm, Kem Gambrell
The Pink Triangle As An Interruptive Symbol, Marnie Rorholm, Kem Gambrell
Journal of Hate Studies
The Pink Triangle is a symbol of collective memory and meaning for two very different, but similarly marginalized groups: gay male prisoners held in concentration camps in Nazi Germany, and the modern LGBTQAI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, asexual/allied and intersexed) community. Since the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps in the mid 1940’s, many memorials to the Holocaust, as well as several for the Pink Triangle victims have sprung up around the world. While there are a number of reasons for these memorials, one premise is that these monuments serve as a way to create a collective memory, with …
Ministering To Other People's Fears: Effects Of Anti-Muslim Hostility On American Muslim Participation In Public Life, Caleb Elfenbein
Ministering To Other People's Fears: Effects Of Anti-Muslim Hostility On American Muslim Participation In Public Life, Caleb Elfenbein
Journal of Hate Studies
This article explores the manifestations and effects of anti-Muslim hostility in the United States, asking how anti-Muslim hostility affects the nature of American Muslim participation in public life. It argues that cultural trauma among American Muslim communities, resulting from an expectation of routine harm, conditions the nature of participation in public life undertaken by many American Muslims. Drawing on original datasets documenting anti-Muslim hostility and outreach efforts undertaken by American Muslim communities, we can see that ministering to non-Muslim fears has become a central element of participation in public life. This burden of “humanization” pushes us to consider central elements …
Radio Maria Transylvania: National Representation, Prayer, And Intersubjectivity In A Growing Catholic Media Network, Marc Roscoe Loustau
Radio Maria Transylvania: National Representation, Prayer, And Intersubjectivity In A Growing Catholic Media Network, Marc Roscoe Loustau
Journal of Global Catholicism
This article examines the public discourse of a Radio Maria Transylvania, a growing Catholic media network for members of the Hungarian ethnic minority in Romania. I look at two primary narratives: first, accounts about how the network was founded in the mid-2000s. And second, listeners’ prayers to the Virgin Mary published on the media network’s web site. Acts of petitioning powerful others for assistance on behalf of a family are central features of Radio Maria Transylvania’s storytelling–on behalf of a national family in the case of the network’s origin narratives and a natal family in the case of prayers to …
The Promises And Perils Of Radio As A Medium Of Faith In A Q’Eqchi’-Maya Catholic Community, Eric Hoenes Del Pinal
The Promises And Perils Of Radio As A Medium Of Faith In A Q’Eqchi’-Maya Catholic Community, Eric Hoenes Del Pinal
Journal of Global Catholicism
Because their parish is large, dispersed, and overwhelmingly rural, FM radio is one of the few reliable means through which the Q’eqchi’-Maya Catholics of San Felipe in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, can communicate with each other en masse. Yet, because it is a one-way medium, it is also impossible to gauge how its intended audience is responding, or if is even there to receive broadcasted messages. Drawing on ethnographic material collected in 2005 (on the use of radio broadcasting to call together ritual participants) and 2016 (on an ultimately failed attempt to launch a radio station to serve rural parishioners), …

Semiotics: A Theoretical Scientific Research, Aqeel Al -Maliki
Semiotics: A Theoretical Scientific Research, Aqeel Al -Maliki
Alustath Journal for Human and Social Sciences
Semiotics is a science and a multi-aspect analytical tool in the study of everything denoting another. Let it be known that making use of a semiotic analysis of literary texts reveals the multi-aspects of literary signs, such as sounds, words, meters, symbols, and concepts by tackling the internal structure of these signs as well as the way they are used and their denotations . The study is an attempt to clarify that knowing semiotics helps create a better understanding among students. So, in order to describe semiotics, and to identify the various signs in social life, a good number of …

Producing An Lgbt Religious Organizational Identity: The Case Of Dignityusa, Nik Lampe, James Cavendish, J. E. Sumerau
Producing An Lgbt Religious Organizational Identity: The Case Of Dignityusa, Nik Lampe, James Cavendish, J. E. Sumerau
The Qualitative Report
In this exploratory study, we examine the production of an organizational LGBT religious identity utilizing the case of DignityUSA. To this end, we engage in two interconnected analyses. First, we revisit and verify the findings of Loseke and Cavendish (2001) concerning the production of what they called a “Dignified Self,” which LGBT Catholics may use to integrate their religious-sexual-gender identities. Then, we expand on their analyses of DignityUSA in the late 1990’s to outline the ways DignityUSA constructs an organizational identity their members may draw upon to construct the Dignified Self and integrate their sexual/gender and religious identities. In so …

Privacy Criterions And Elements In Islamic Residential Architecture معايير وعناصر الخصوصية في العمارة السكنية الإسلامية, Sana’ Al-Birawi, ‘Ala’ Al-Din ‘Adawi
Jordan Journal of Islamic Studies
This research aims to clarify some criterions and elements in Islamic architecture that are related to the residential privacy. The residenceis the main influential factor on the human values and behaviors. Thus, we notice that the loss of privacy in most residences affects the concept of privacy for the residents. This research uses: deductive, inductive, analytical and descriptive methods. The research concludes that the Islamic residential architecture mostly achieves resident’s privacy. Last but not least, it is my sincerest hope that this study may be used as a reference for all those related to the fields of building construction, so …
