Objective: This study examined a work-related intervention designed to assist people with serious mental illness (SMI) in overcoming employment barriers.
Methods: A pre- post-test experimental design was used to investigate the effects of a 10-session, prevocational seminar on self-efficacy and work motivation among adults with SMI residing in an inpatient psychiatric facility. Three one-way ANCOVAs were applied to analyze post-test results for the dependent measures.
Findings: Although significant findings were not found regarding the effectiveness of the prevocational seminar on self-efficacy, other interesting discoveries were made. One noteworthy outcome was persons with SMI wanted to work but experienced barriers, …
A Case Study Of A Jail Participating In An Animal-Assisted Crisis Response Program, Erica Schlau
A Case Study Of A Jail Participating In An Animal-Assisted Crisis Response Program, Erica Schlau
Dissertations
A crisis state is often the result of being admitted to jail, due to the catastrophic impact incarceration can have on personal and professional lives. Unlike other studies, the present study focuses on inmates in jail rather than in prison. To address jail inmates in a crisis state, the current best practice is suicide prevention, which does not effectively consider the needs of jail inmates. Recently emerging in the literature is the use of animal-assisted crisis response (AACR) to serve individuals experiencing a crisis. There is a lack of research on the use of animal-assisted interventions (AAI) with the population …

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Counselor education programs aim to adequately train competent pre-service counselors to fulfill a myriad of roles and responsibilities associated with their specialty area. In accordance with professional organizations, gatekeeping is an ethical responsibility of counselor educators and supervisors to protect the welfare of clients and the health of the counseling profession through ongoing evaluation of pre-service counselors. Presently, no standardized evaluation tool exists to assess school counseling interns comprehensively, attending to school counseling competencies, dispositions, roles, and responsibilities. The purpose of the study is to attend to the gap in literature through the creation and validation of The School Counseling …

The Moderating Effect Of Employee Bottom-Line Mentality On The Relation Between Personality And Unethical Pro-Organizational Behaviors, Jordan Thomas
The Moderating Effect Of Employee Bottom-Line Mentality On The Relation Between Personality And Unethical Pro-Organizational Behaviors, Jordan Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) refers to unethical actions that employees engage in to benefit the company they work for. The issue of employees engaging in UPB has been high-lighted in various high-profile scandals, such as the Volkswagen emissions scandal. The current study examined the interaction between employees’ personality traits, perceptions of bottom-line mentality (BLM), and UPB. The results suggested that when employees who are low on trait conscientiousness and honesty-humility are placed in an environment in which they perceive to have high levels of BLM, they are more likely to engage in UPB than those individuals who had higher levels …

The Relationship Between Media Portrayal Of Schizophrenia And Attitudes Toward Those With Schizophrenia, Julia Crant
Journal of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences
The aim of this study was to learn whether positive media portrayals of schizophrenia affect people’s attitudes toward individuals with schizophrenia. Fifty (50) participants viewed one of two videos—either a control video showing a documentary about koalas or a treatment clip from the television show Perception that portrays a professor with schizophrenia effectively teaching a class. After viewing the video, participants rated their attitudes toward a person with schizophrenia on a dangerousness scale as well as on cognitive and behavioral attitudes scales. The participants who watched the treatment clip rated people with schizophrenia as significantly less dangerous and had significantly …

Implementing Successful Jail-Based Programming For Women: A Case Study Of Planning Parenting, Prison & Pups – Waiting To ‘Let The Dogs In’, Kimberly Collica-Cox, Gennifer Furst
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
With 68% of prisoners recidivating within a three year period, designing and implementing innovative programming within the corrections setting is a necessity. The transient nature of the jail population begets difficulties for its successful implementation and maintenance. Since incarcerated females represent a smaller portion of the population, women, who face different challenges than their male counterparts, often receive less opportunity for programming, especially within the jail setting. Parenting, Prison & Pups (PPP), a program which weaves together an evidence-based parenting curriculum, integrated with the use of Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT), serves as a model for how to implement innovative programming …

As states focus on expanding integrated employment opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and phasing out sheltered work, they are finding a need to concurrently examine Community Life Engagement (CLE) supports as a wrap-around to ensure individuals’ engagement in the community is maintained and they continue to receive sufficient levels of support, despite fluctuations in job status and hours. In January through June of 2017, the State Employment Leadership Network (SELN) hosted a working group of member states to discuss ideas and share strategies for encouraging quality CLE supports while maintaining a focus on Employment First (see …

Investigation Of Accessibility Of Electronic Music Resources For The Visually Impaired, Geraldine Rinna, Michael J. Duffy Iv, Taylor E. Arndt, Michele D. Behr
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
The number of students at Western Michigan University (WMU) who require accommodation for disabilities has been increasing in recent years, and is expected to continue to increase in the future. While the University Libraries tries to be responsive to all types of accommodations, students with visual impairments present a particular challenge for libraries to ensure their electronic resources are accessible. Most visually impaired students utilize “screen readers,” software programs that use a speech synthesizer to “read” the text that is displayed on the screen, to navigate web based resources. In an effort to try to better understand how specific screen …

The Self-(Un)Identification Of Disability In Higher Education, Katherine C. Aquino, Joshua D. Bittinger
The Self-(Un)Identification Of Disability In Higher Education, Katherine C. Aquino, Joshua D. Bittinger
Administration and Instructional Leadership Faculty Publications
Use of the self-identification process and accommodation services can, in theory, positively contribute to student success; however, students with disabilities may be negatively impacted if they perceive others viewing them as less significant members of the college community. This study identifies the number of students with self-identified disabilities within higher education and the change in self-identification cases over the course of postsecondary enrollment. Utilizing data from the Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study, findings indicate that, 59% of students who self-identified during the first year of postsecondary education, unidentified by the first follow-up and, of those who identified as having a …

Disabled students may face ableist challenges in the campus residential environment. Although campus housing plays a critical role in retention by promoting social integration, little is known about what promotes the engagement of disabled students in campus living environments because the literature about these students focuses on legal topics or accommodations. In this study, we wanted to understand how disabled students experienced living on campus and how the residential experience promoted social integration. We employed a critical constructivist case study approach, framing disability from a social justice perspective. Data for this study come from interviews with 24 students attending four …
Trauma Sensitive Schools And The Psychoeducational Evaluation, Barbara Jordan
Trauma Sensitive Schools And The Psychoeducational Evaluation, Barbara Jordan
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Exposure to adverse childhood experiences, commonly referred to as ACEs, negatively impacts various physical and psychological aspects of the body and can result in a number of detrimental life outcomes including disease, mental health disorders, and even early death. The negative effects of ACE exposure begin long before adulthood, often resulting in academic and behavioral difficulties for school-aged children. Since school psychologists strive to advocate for the needs of all students, ensure correct special education categorization, and promote trauma-sensitive practices in schools, it is beneficial for them to have knowledge of ACEs and trauma that impact the students they serve. …

The Mediating Effect Of Color-Blind Racial Ideology On The Relationship Between Multicultural Counseling Competence And Empathy, Brain R. Fitts
The Mediating Effect Of Color-Blind Racial Ideology On The Relationship Between Multicultural Counseling Competence And Empathy, Brain R. Fitts
ETD Archive
Multicultural counseling competence is the extent to which a therapist can effectively work with clients from cultural groups which differ from their own, and is expressed through skills, knowledge, and awareness (Sue, 1998; Sue, Bernier, Durran, Feinberg, Pedersen, Smith, & Vasquez-Nuttall, 1982; Sue, Arredondo, & McDavis, 1992). Color-blind racial ideology is the belief that either emphasizes sameness among all individuals, known as color-evasion color-blind racial attitudes, or emphasizes that all individuals have the same opportunity for success, known as power-evasion colorblind racial attitudes (Carr, 1997; Neville, Lilly, Duran, Lee, & Browne, 2000; Neville, Awad, Brooks, Flores, & Bluemel, 2013).
