Atmospheric Cold Plasma Interactions With Microbiological Risks In Fresh Food Processing, Apurva Patange Jan 2019

Atmospheric Cold Plasma Interactions With Microbiological Risks In Fresh Food Processing, Apurva Patange

Doctoral

Atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) is a novel emerging non-thermal technology that has attracted attention as a decontamination tool in several industrial, food and healthcare sectors. This study investigated the anti-microbial efficacy of ACP against microbiological risks associated with fresh foods. Treatment was performed using in-package ‘dry’ ACP technology and plasma functionalised liquid to decontaminate microorganisms, exploring the responses to real and challenging microbiological risks pertinent to both fresh foods themselves as well as the effluents generated from food processing industry. A range of critical control process parameters were investigated with respect to key pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms commonly implicated in …

3d Growth Substrates In Mammalian Cell Culture In Vitro, Their Effects On Cellular Function And Response, Mahmoud Gargotti Jan 2019

3d Growth Substrates In Mammalian Cell Culture In Vitro, Their Effects On Cellular Function And Response, Mahmoud Gargotti

Doctoral

Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems have gained increasing interest in drug discovery and tissue engineering due to a number of advantages in providing more physiologically relevant information and potentially more predictive data for in vivo tests. Extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins have been developed over in recent years to simulate a natural microenvironment for cells cultured in vitro. Conventional cell culture or 2D cell culture form monolayers of cells on a solid surface, which is typically polystyrene or glass, whereas a 3D culture system employ a porous growth matrix on which the cells grow. The transition from cell culture on a …

Microwave Synthesis And Characterisation Of Zinc Sulfide Nanomaterials For Photocatalytic And Anti-Bacterial Applications, Damian W. Synnott Jan 2019

Microwave Synthesis And Characterisation Of Zinc Sulfide Nanomaterials For Photocatalytic And Anti-Bacterial Applications, Damian W. Synnott

Doctoral

This thesis is focused on the development of a novel ambient pressure microwave synthesis of ZnS based materials for photocatalytic and anti-bacterial technologies. Chapter 1 introduces the problems with anti-biotic resistant bacteria and the impact that these species are causing within healthcare systems. One of the approaches to tackling these problems is the development of self-cleaning materials to replace the harsh cleaning agents currently in use to sterilize the surfaces of buildings and materials used in healthcare environments. Chapter 1 also introduces semiconductors, semiconductor photocatalysis and the mechanism of action, improving photocatalytic action and how to semiconductor photocatalysts have been …

Characterisation Of Cholesterolcontaining Microparticles In Autoimmunity, Shuai Shuai Hu Jan 2019

Characterisation Of Cholesterolcontaining Microparticles In Autoimmunity, Shuai Shuai Hu

Doctoral

In recent years, it has become apparent that sub-micron scale remnants of cells, called microparticles (MPs), are present in human circulation. MPs contain DNA, RNA, protein and lipids (such as cholesterol). Increased numbers of MPs are observed in autoimmune conditions such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). This work aims to address the deficiency in the literature concerning MP cholesterol (MPC) by establishing reference values for MPC in a representative healthy population group, and by investigating the potential of MP cholesterol as a biomarker in autoimmunity.

The Use Of Fluid Haemodynamics In The Diagnosis Of Cardiovascular Disease, Andrew Malone Jan 2019

The Use Of Fluid Haemodynamics In The Diagnosis Of Cardiovascular Disease, Andrew Malone

Doctoral

Currently the diagnostic methods used to detect cardiovascular disease largely rely on the inference of the presence of arterial stenosis. There is a clinical interest in the development of a diagnostic screening technique which can indicate the risk of developing cardiovascular disease at an early stage so that non-surgical treatments can be applied. The goal of this work was to develop and validate a diagnostic screening technique for cardiovascular disease using the mechanical biomarker wall shear stress. Improvements in wall shear stress measurements were made by using a 2D Fourier transform to extract additional spectral information from the ultrasound pulse …

Standardized Analysis Of Morphology & Toxicology Effects In Freshwater Organisms To Nano-Polystyrene Exposure (Samtefone), Andrew Reynolds Jan 2019

Standardized Analysis Of Morphology & Toxicology Effects In Freshwater Organisms To Nano-Polystyrene Exposure (Samtefone), Andrew Reynolds

Doctoral

This thesis focuses on studying a series of standardised OECD tests used to check a nano plastic dispersal into a freshwater environment to assess acute toxicity. The experimentation also focused on using additional validation tests in conjunction with these acute toxicity tests to attempt to discern possible chronic effects from this nano plastic. The current research analyses the effects of fluorescent 100 nm diameter nano-polystyrene spheres (NPS) as a representative MNP particle. The NPS were examined for their stable fluorescence emission in all test media and all NPS concentrations utilised in the study. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) analysis was run …

The "Invisible Hand" Of Peer Review: The Implications Of Author-Referee Networks On Peer Review In A Scholarly Journal, Pierpaolo Dondio, Niccolo Casnici, Nigel Gilbert, Francisco Grimaldo, Flaminio Squazzoni Jan 2019

The "Invisible Hand" Of Peer Review: The Implications Of Author-Referee Networks On Peer Review In A Scholarly Journal, Pierpaolo Dondio, Niccolo Casnici, Nigel Gilbert, Francisco Grimaldo, Flaminio Squazzoni

Articles

Peer review is not only a quality screening mechanism for scholarly journals. It also connects authors and referees either directly or indirectly. This means that their positions in the network structure of the community could influence the process, while peer review could in turn influence subsequent networking and collaboration. This paper aims to map these complex network implications by looking at 2232 author/referee couples in an interdisciplinary journal that uses double blind peer review. By reconstructing temporal co-authorship networks, we found that referees tended to recommend more positively submissions by authors who were within three steps in their collaboration network. …

Background and Context: Computer Science attrition rates (in the western world) are very concerning, with a large number of students failing to progress each year. It is well acknowledged that a significant factor of this attrition, is the students’ difficulty to master the introductory programming module, often referred to as CS1.

Objective: The objective of this article is to describe the evolution of a prediction model named PreSS (Predict Student Success) over a 13-year period (2005–2018).

Method: This article ties together, the PreSS prediction model; pilot studies; a longitudinal, multi-institutional re-validation and replication …

Direct Instruction And Its Extension With A Community Of Inquiry: A Comparison Of Mental Workload, Performance And Efficiency, Giuliano Orru, Luca Longo

Articles

This paper investigates the efficiency of two instructional design conditions: a traditional design based on the direct instruction approach to learning and its extension with a collaborative activity based upon the community of inquiry approach to learning. This activity was built upon a set of textual trigger questions to elicit cognitive abilities and support knowledge formation. A total of 115 students participated in the experiments and a number of third-level computer science classes where divided in two groups. A control group of learners received the former instructional design while an experimental group also received the latter design. Subsequently, learners of …

As Al moves rapidly into the health care field, it promises to revolutionize and transform our approach to medical treatment. The black-box nature of AI, however, produces a shiver of discomfort for many people. How can we trust our health, let alone our very lives, to decisions whose pathways are unknown and impenetrable?

As challenging as these questions may be, they are not insurmountable. And, in fact, the health care field provides the perfect ground for finding our way through these challenges. How can that be? Why would we suggest that a circumstance in which we are putting our lives …
