A Review And Synthesis Of The Work Ability Literature, David Cadiz, Grant Brady, Jennifer R. Rineer, Donald M. Truxillo
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
There is a growing literature investigating aging and work due to increasing numbers of older working adults. One emerging research line has focused on work ability (WA), or workers’ functional capacity to meet work demands, including the antecedents of WA and how WA affects work attitudes, performance, and retirement. Our article provides the first comprehensive multidisciplinary (e.g., medicine, psychology, management) review of the WA literature to date. In our review, we discuss the evolution and limitations of WA measurement and conceptualization that could limit future advancements in WA research, integrate WA with organizational and lifespan development theories, synthesize the extant …

Design Of An Arduino Based Smart Home System, Qi Lu
Design Of An Arduino Based Smart Home System, Qi Lu
Graduate Research Papers
Smart home is a home setup where smart appliances can be controlled remotely using networked devices. It has gained widely attentions due to its flexible integrations. However, not everyone is willing to upgrade their old home appliances to smart ones. One alternative solution is to design and implement a wireless controlled smart system that could utilize existing home appliances. This project aims to design an Arduino based smart home system. The system may upgrade existing appliances into smart home devices by integrating the wireless capability through XBee modules and low-cost Arduino boards.

The explosion of digital healthcare data has led to a surge of data-driven medical research based on machine learning. In recent years, as a powerful technique for big data, deep learning has gained a central position in machine learning circles for its great advantages in feature representation and pattern recognition. This article presents a comprehensive overview of studies that employ deep learning methods to deal with clinical data. Firstly, based on the analysis of the characteristics of clinical data, various types of clinical data (e.g., medical images, clinical notes, lab results, vital signs and demographic informatics) are discussed and details …

Web Archives At The Nexus Of Good Fakes And Flawed Originals, Michael L. Nelson
Computer Science Faculty Publications
[Summary] The authenticity, integrity, and provenance of resources we encounter on the web are increasingly in question. While many people are inured to the possibility of altered images, the easy accessibility of powerful software tools that synthesize audio and video will unleash a torrent of convincing “deepfakes” into our social discourse. Archives will no longer be monopolized by a countable number of institutions such as governments and publishers, but will become a competitive space filled with social engineers, propagandists, conspiracy theorists, and aspiring Hollywood directors. While the historical record has never been singular nor unmalleable, current technologies empower an unprecedented …
Automatic Slide Generation For Scientific Papers, Athar Sefid, Jian Wu, Prasenjit Mitra, C. Lee Giles
Automatic Slide Generation For Scientific Papers, Athar Sefid, Jian Wu, Prasenjit Mitra, C. Lee Giles
Computer Science Faculty Publications
We describe our approach for automatically generating presentation slides for scientific papers using deep neural networks. Such slides can help authors have a starting point for their slide generation process. Extractive summarization techniques are applied to rank and select important sentences from the original document. Previous work identified important sentences based only on a limited number of features that were extracted from the position and structure of sentences in the paper. Our method extends previous work by (1) extracting a more comprehensive list of surface features, (2) considering semantic or meaning of the sentence, and (3) using context around the …
Is Meat The New Tobacco? Regulating Food Demand In The Age Of Climate Change, Lingxi Chenyang
Is Meat The New Tobacco? Regulating Food Demand In The Age Of Climate Change, Lingxi Chenyang
Utah Law Faculty Scholarship
Switching from a meat-heavy to a plant-based diet is one of the highest-impact lifestyle changes for climate mitigation and adaptation. However, conventional demand-side energy policy has focused on increasing consumption of efficient machines and fuels. Regulating food demand has key advantages. First, food consumption is biologically constrained, thus switching to more efficient foods avoids unintended consequences of switching to more efficient machines, like higher overall energy consumption. Second, food consumption, like smoking, is primed for normshifting because it occurs in socially conspicuous environments. Indeed, while place-based bans and information regulation were essential in lowering the prevalence of smoking, the same …
Humans: Uniquely Responsible For Causing Conservation Problems, Uniquely Capable Of Solving Them, Michael L. Wilson, Clarence L. Lehman
Humans: Uniquely Responsible For Causing Conservation Problems, Uniquely Capable Of Solving Them, Michael L. Wilson, Clarence L. Lehman
Animal Sentience
We share Chapman & Huffman’s views on the importance of promoting animal welfare and conservation. We disagree with their implication, however, that reverence for life and concern for the wellbeing of global ecosystems depend on a belief that other living things are similar to humans in any of their capacities. Humans exhibit special traits — language, cumulative culture, extraordinary capacity for cooperation when we are at our best, and ever-advancing technological developments — that enabled them to dominate the planet, resulting in the current conservation crisis. It is precisely the fact that humans have become unique that provides hope for …

Animal Sentience
It is true that one of the harmful consequences of creating categories where one group is unique and superior to others is that it justifies discriminating against the inferior groups. And outright abuse of nonhuman animals is indeed morally unjustifiable. But what is to be done about it?
Refining Thoughts About Human/Nonhuman Differences, Colin A. Chapman, Michael A. Huffman
Refining Thoughts About Human/Nonhuman Differences, Colin A. Chapman, Michael A. Huffman
Animal Sentience
Our commentators come from many fields and disciplines and express highly divergent views, illustrating broad interest in the question. From the breadth of comments, we have identified two recurring themes, which we focus on here. The first is a preponderance of cautionary remarks about evaluating the differences between humans and nonhuman animals. The second concerns whether considering animals as worthy of moral consideration is one of many useful tools for conservationists trying to prevent extinction, habitat destruction, and climate change.

Iron Waste Based Point-Of-Use Device To Treat Pesticides In Water, Tauqueer Abbas
Iron Waste Based Point-Of-Use Device To Treat Pesticides In Water, Tauqueer Abbas
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Organochlorine pesticide (OCP) contamination in groundwater is a problem worldwide, more severely in rural areas that normally cannot afford centralized water treatment systems. Iron nanoparticles have shown their ability to degrade a number of chlorinated organic pollutants in water. However, their practical application as a point-of-use filtration medium is not possible because of their mobility, high cost and unknown/potential toxic effects to human health. In this study, iron turning waste, a common waste material which has the same valence as iron nanoparticles but is ubiquitous and affordable, was experimented to remove individual (batch wise) and mixture of six OCPs (batch …
Comparitive Analysis Of Turbidity And Organics Removal In Biological Activated Carbon And Anthracite-Sand Filters In The Moorhead Water Treatment Plant, Emily Von Hagen
Comparitive Analysis Of Turbidity And Organics Removal In Biological Activated Carbon And Anthracite-Sand Filters In The Moorhead Water Treatment Plant, Emily Von Hagen
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The source water for the Moorhead Water Treatment Plant (MWTP) exhibits high concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC) throughout the year and seasonal taste and odor (T&O) events. To prevent biological regrowth in the distribution system there is a need to improve organics removal in the existing biological anthracite-sand filters, especially during cold water conditions when a significant decrease in removal efficiencies are observed. Three types of granular activated carbon (GAC) were selected for a pilot study to evaluate the potential of enhanced organics and T&O removal in biological activated carbon (BAC) filters compared to anthracite-sand. Turbidity removal was also …

Understanding The Interaction Between Enzymes And Nanomaterials, Sunanda Neupane
Chemistry and Biochemistry
The rapid development of nanoparticles (NPs) has impacted many fields including energy efficiency, material science, biosensing, and medical therapeutics. Recently, NPs have been utilized to immobilize enzymes. The so-formed enzyme- NP complex show great potential to increase the reusability of enzymes and catalytic efficiencies. Enzyme-NP complex can also advance enzyme delivery for therapeutics where NPs serve as the enzyme carrier. In all applications, the contact of NPs with biomacromolecules, especially proteins, is either necessary or inevitable, which can lead to alterations in adsorbed enzyme structure and function. In biocatalysis, such changes often reduce the desired catalytic activity; in living organisms …

"I'M Leavin' It (All) Up To You": Gundy And The (Sort-Of) Resurrection Of The Subdelegation Doctrine, Gary S. Lawson
Faculty Scholarship
In 2000, Cass Sunstein quipped that the conventional nondelegation doctrine, which holds that there are judicially enforceable constitutional limits on the extent to which Congress can confer discretion on other actors to determine the content of federal law, “has had one good year, and 211 bad ones (and counting).”1 The “one good year,” he said, was 1935, when the Court twice held unconstitutional certain provisions of the National Industrial Recovery Act that gave the president power to approve or create codes of conduct for essentially all American businesses, subject only to very vague, and often contradictory, statutory exhortations to pursue …
Review Of Extraordinary Racial Politics By Fred Lee, Robert L. Tsai
Review Of Extraordinary Racial Politics By Fred Lee, Robert L. Tsai
Faculty Scholarship
The goal of Fred Lee in Extraordinary Racial Politics is to explicate a recurring form of political activity that is distinct from either revolutionary politics that convulse the entire polity or normal politics that yield formal laws and institutions. Between these phenomena, he describes a political experience that can be “unusual, episodic, intensive, decisive, and transformative” yet leaves its mark on a polity (p. 2). Lee is less concerned with the laws on the books than he is with an informal set of potent racial formations that are both sticky and generative: sometimes they are partly codified (as with legal …
The Pathologies Of Digital Consent, Neil M. Richards, Woodrow Hartzog
The Pathologies Of Digital Consent, Neil M. Richards, Woodrow Hartzog
Faculty Scholarship
Consent permeates both our law and our lives — especially in the digital context. Consent is the foundation of the relationships we have with search engines, social networks, commercial web sites, and any one of the dozens of other digitally mediated businesses we interact with regularly. We are frequently asked to consent to terms of service, privacy notices, the use of cookies, and so many other commercial practices. Consent is important, but it’s possible to have too much of a good thing. As a number of scholars have documented, while consent models permeate the digital consumer landscape, the practical conditions …
The Inconsentability Of Facial Surveillance, Evan Selinger, Woodrow Hartzog
The Inconsentability Of Facial Surveillance, Evan Selinger, Woodrow Hartzog
Faculty Scholarship
Governments and companies often use consent to justify the use of facial recognition technologies for surveillance. Many proposals for regulating facial recognition technology incorporate consent rules as a way to protect those faces that are being tagged and tracked. But consent is a broken regulatory mechanism for facial surveillance. The individual risks of facial surveillance are impossibly opaque, and our collective autonomy and obscurity interests aren’t captured or served by individual decisions.
In this article, we argue that facial recognition technologies have a massive and likely fatal consent problem. We reconstruct some of Nancy Kim’s fundamental claims in Consentability: Consent …
