Utilizing A Decision Aid In Acute Inpatients To Increase Patient Satisfaction In Communication With The Provider, Elizabeth Fiedler
Utilizing A Decision Aid In Acute Inpatients To Increase Patient Satisfaction In Communication With The Provider, Elizabeth Fiedler
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
Introduction. If communication between patients and providers is improved, patients have better outcomes because of adhering to medications and treatments. Evidence Summary. Poor communication can lead to unnecessary readmissions and decreased quality of care. Decision aid tools assist patients in compiling thoughts and questions for providers, lead to a higher understanding of the plan of care, and can help patients to clarify confusing components of the treatment plan. Tools that improve communication between patients and providers lead to an increase in patient satisfaction. The HCAHPS survey is a measurement of patient satisfaction. Gaps in Literature. The Effects Of Early Laxative, Diet, And Exercise Education On Postpartum Constipation Prevention, Amber Thompson
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
Introduction: Postpartum constipation is a common problem women face after delivery. Vaginal tears, pain medications, hormonal changes, decreased activity, dietary changes, and hemorrhoids can all increase the risk of developing constipation in the postpartum period. Evidence Summary: Constipation can cause pain, discomfort, decreased quality of life, and life-long consequences if left untreated. Nurses have a responsibility to the patient to provide quality care by taking a proactive approach to bowel management. Regular assessment of patient bowel habits and the provision of education on non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic prevention measures are recommended. Gaps: There is a lack of literature specific to constipation …

Implementing The Eat, Sleep, Console Approach For Nas Management: Review Of Literature, Amber D. Tilberg
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects
Introduction: Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is a growing problem and poses significant burden on the healthcare system.
Evidence summary: Three emerging themes were recognized and further guided the development and execution of the proposed DNP project: 1) A need to improve NAS assessment practices that will decrease frustration, discrepancies, and inconsistent NAS scoring. Despite specific training, inaccuracy and inconsistency still exists among nurses using traditional scoring methods, leading to a longer hospital stay. 2) Family-centered care is vital for infants with NAS. Parent education, nurse to parent coaching, and rooming-in experiences build parental competence and confidence, nurture a trusting nurse-parent …

© 2019, Institute of Mathematical Statistics. All rights reserved. When detecting a change-point in the marginal distribution of a stationary time series, bootstrap techniques are required to determine critical values for the tests when the pre-change distribution is unknown. In this paper, we propose a sequential moving block bootstrap and demonstrate its validity under a converging alternative. Furthermore, we demonstrate that power is still achieved by the bootstrap under a non-converging alternative. We follow the approach taken by Peligrad in [14], and avoid assumptions of mixing, association or near epoch dependence. These results are applied to a linear process and …

© Crown 2019. The supervised learning classification algorithms are one of the most well known successful techniques for ambient assisted living environments. However the usual supervised learning classification approaches face issues that limit their application especially in dealing with the knowledge interpretation and with very large unbalanced labeled data set. To address these issues fuzzy classification method PROAFTN was proposed. PROAFTN is part of learning algorithms and enables to determine the fuzzy resemblance measures by generalizing the concordance and discordance indexes used in outranking methods. The main goal of this chapter is to show how the combined meta-heuristics with inductive …

Copyright © 2018 by SCITEPRESS - Science and Technology Publications, Lda. All rights reserved This paper discusses Everything-as-a-Thing (*aaT) as a novel way for abstracting the Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Compared to other forms of abstraction like Everything-as-a-Service (*aaS) and Everything-as-a-Resource (*aaR), *aaT puts emphasis on living things, on top of non-living things, that populate these applications. On the one hand, living things take over roles that are defined in terms of rights and duties. On the other hand, non-living things offer capabilities that are defined in terms of functional and non-functional properties. Interactions that occur between living and non-living things …

Aggregation Of Residential Water Heaters For Peak Shifting And Frequency Response Services, Thomas Leighton Clarke, Tylor Slay, Robert B. Bass, Conrad Eustis
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
The increased penetration of renewable energy resources poses challenges for grid stability. The stochastic generation of solar and wind power cannot be controlled to follow load. And, the transition away from synchronous generators is reducing the capacity to arrest and recover from frequency disturbances. Smart electric water heaters provide utilities with an appliance that can be remotely controlled and serve as a form of energy storage. They have very fast response times and make up a large amount of residential energy consumption, making them useful for load peak shifting as well as other ancillary grid services. As smart appliances become …

© 2019 Shah, Liu, Al Kury, Zeb, Abbas, Li, Yang, Liu, Jiang and Li. Stroke is the significant cause of human mortality and sufferings depending upon race and demographic location. Melatonin is a potent antioxidant that exerts protective effects in differential experimental stroke models. Several mechanisms have been previously suggested for the neuroprotective effects of melatonin in ischemic brain injury. The aim of this study is to investigate whether melatonin treatment affects the glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid (AMPA) receptor signaling in cerebral cortex and striatum 24 h after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Testimony, Objectivism, And Poetic Form In Charles Reznikoff’S Holocaust, Rachel E. Trnka
Testimony, Objectivism, And Poetic Form In Charles Reznikoff’S Holocaust, Rachel E. Trnka
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This essay examines the gradual development of Charles Reznikoff’s testimony form Holocaust poetry, which ultimately rejected the traditional lyric forms of his earlier works in favor of a stark, Objectivist poetry that culminated in Holocaust (1975)—a poem based on the transcripts from the Nuremberg and Eichmann trials. The WWI poems from Reznikoff’s first volume Rhythms (1918) underscore the importance of music to his early elegies in contrast to the blunt, impersonal testimonies in Holocaust. In Rhythms, Reznikoff employs traditional conventions ironically to convey war’s unpoetic reality while the poetic speakers in Going To and Fro and Walking Up …

For decades, legislatures and courts have created and preserved rights and remedies for vulnerable groups—consumers, employees, victims of mass torts, investors, and the like. Both branches have extolled the virtues of these substantive rights and the private enforcement mechanisms required to effectuate them. However, despite statements like that of Justice Roberts and others that the judiciary is not a lawmaking body—indeed, that the judicial institution should take care to exercise restraint—the Roberts Court has engaged in sweeping reform that tends to extinguish these substantive rights.
In 2012, I traced how the Roberts Court paid scant attention to the integral role …

The Corporate Purpose Of Social License, Hillary A. Sale

This Article deploys the sociological theory of social license, or the acceptance of a business or organization by the relevant communities and stakeholders, in the context of the board of directors and corporate governance. Corporations are generally treated as “private” actors and thus are regulated by “private” corporate law. This construct allows for considerable latitude. Corporate actors are not, however, solely “private.” They are the beneficiaries of economic and political power, and the decisions they make have impacts that extend well beyond the boundaries of the entities they represent.
Using Wells Fargo and Uber as case studies, this Article explores …

Progressive And Populist Strands In American Constitutionalism, Louis Michael Seidman
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Many modern liberals believe that the federal government is captured by a “billionaire party” determined to wield public power for private gain. But many of them also believe in giving the federal government greatly enhanced powers, like administering “Medicare for all.”
There is a history to this contradiction. Modern liberalism is an amalgam of older populist and progressive impulses with deep roots in the country’s past. The populist impulse locates the source of economic oppression in government corruption. The solution to this problem is direct, popular democracy. Progressives tend to locate the source of economic oppression in the malfunction of …

In the last several years, there has been an increasing tendency to view the impacts of transnational business operations through the lens of human rights law. A major obstacle to holding companies accountable for the harms that they impose, however, has been the separate legal identity of corporate subsidiaries and of contractors in a company's supply chain. France's recently enacted duty of vigilance statute seeks to overcome this obstacle by imposing a duty on companies to identify potential serious human rights violations by their subsidiaries and by companies with which they have an “established commercial relationship.” Failure to engage in …

Space exploration is heating up. Governments and private interests are on a fast track to develop technologies to send people and equipment to celestial bodies, like the moon and asteroids, to extract their untapped resources. Near-space is rapidly filling up with public and private satellites, causing electromagnetic interference problems and dangerous space debris from collisions and earlier launches. The absence of a global management system for the private commercial development of outer space resources will allow these near space problems to be exported further into the galaxy. Moreover, without a governing authority or rules controlling entry or limiting despoliation, outer …
Boilerplate And Party Intent, Gregory Klass
Boilerplate And Party Intent, Gregory Klass
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
It is commonly recognized that parties often do not read or understand contract boilerplate they agree to, and that such parties might not intend all the terms in it. Less often noticed are decisions that favor boilerplate over evidence of the parties’ contrary intent for the very reason that it is boilerplate. This article discusses that phenomenon. It identifies decisions in which courts favor boilerplate terms over other evidence the parties’ intent because it is boilerplate, discusses the rules that explain those outcomes, and examines the reasons behind the rules.
A contractual writing, whether individually negotiated and drafted or boilerplate, …
Reimagining Trade Agreements For Workers: Lessons From The Usmca, Alvaro Santos
Reimagining Trade Agreements For Workers: Lessons From The Usmca, Alvaro Santos
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
A backlash against the post-Cold War order of liberal globalization has taken hold in the rich North Atlantic countries. Concerns about wages, working conditions, and economic opportunity are central to the critique of international trade agreements of the last three decades. While labor rights have progressively been included in trade agreements, they have done little to reshape workers’ well-being and workplace conditions. The new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) may signal a pivot to a new model requiring reforms of domestic labor law and other issues important to workers. However, there is much more to be done to rebalance the power …

Once the province of horror films and fantasy, the idea of recreating extinct life forms is poised to move from science fiction to laboratories and from there to the world at large. While “de-extinction is not something that will take place tomorrow . . . scientists are making major advancements, and eventual success appears inevitable.” Spurred on by the burgeoning field of genetic engineering, it was only a matter of time before scientists turned their attention to recreating extinct life forms, either for the thrill of it or in atonement for the human role in the extinction process.
But science …

The Twitter hashtag #MeToo has provided an accessible medium for users to share their personal experiences and make public the prevalence of sexual harassment, assault, and violence against women. This online phenomenon, which has largely involved posting on Twitter and “retweeting” to share other’s posts has revealed crucial information about the scope and nature of sexual harassment and misconduct. More specifically, social media has served as a central forum for this unprecedented global conversation, where previously silenced voices have been amplified, supporters around the world have been united, and resistance has gained steam.
This Essay discusses the #MeToo movement within …

In the spring of 2015, I took my students of international trade law to visit the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva. It was a two-day trip, organized around lectures and discussions with staff from different divisions of the organization, the Advisory Centre of WTO Law and the permanent missions of two countries. None of my students had been there before, and even though I had taught international trade law for several years, it was also my first time visiting the headquarters of the organization. We were excited and curious. The building looked big and majestic. The back side opened …

I am grateful to Professors Breen and Strang for their thoughtful book about Catholic legal education in the United States. It is an important topic, and their work promises to be a significant contribution to the conversation about the mission of Catholic law schools. My reflections here will focus on Chapter Five.
All of us participating in this symposium are engaged in the collective enterprise of thinking through and implementing what it means to be a Catholic law school. As a historian, personally I am well aware of the value of studying where we have been as part of the …
