Memory, Language, And Healing, Isabel Velázquez Jan 2019

Memory, Language, And Healing, Isabel Velázquez

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

One morning on a spring day not unlike the one during which I write these lines, Dr. Marie Chantal Kalisa came into my office and gifted me with a word. It wasn't a strange occurrence, this. As office neighbors, friends, and fellow members of the order of the culturally dislocated, we were engaging in just an ordinary part of our ongoing conversation on language, memory, cultural (non)transmission, and the many intimate losses and transformations that come as a by-product of geographic displacement. A lovely word it was, its Kirundi vowels bright, shiny, sweet to my ears. A tiny jewel wrapped …

WomenʼS Friendship In Exile: Healing In The Epistolary Correspondence Between Zenobia Camprubí And Pilar De Zubiaurre., Iker Gonzalez-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

The epistolary correspondence between the Spanish intellectuals Zenobia Camprubi (1887-1956) and Pilar de Zubiaurre (1884- 1970) from October 1938 to August 1956 reveals a long friendship that began in Madrid in the 1910S and continued during the exile that they, as supporters of the democratic Second Republic, both suffered after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the victory of dictator Francisco Franco, who ruled Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975. During exile Camprubi writes to Zubiaurre from the United States, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, while Zubiaurre responds from Mexico, where she lived the last thirty years of her …

Examining Stigma Associated With Firefighters Seeking Social Support After Experiencing A Traumatic Event, John Richard Tormos

Theses and Dissertations

This applied dissertation was designed to examine stigma associated with firefighters seeking social support after experiencing a traumatic event. This quantitative study employed a survey approach with a cross-sectional design. The researcher self-selected 26 active career firefighters from a medium-sized fire department located in the southeastern United States to participate in the study. Firefighters responded to an array of emergency incidents and were repeatedly exposed to traumatic events. The Secondary Trauma Exposure Scale was employed to answer the first research question: What are the most frequent types of traumatic events that firefighters have experienced? The findings revealed that all of …

A Doubly Nonlocal Laplace Operator And Its Connection To The Classical Laplacian, Petronela Radu, Kelseys Wells Jan 2019

A Doubly Nonlocal Laplace Operator And Its Connection To The Classical Laplacian, Petronela Radu, Kelseys Wells

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In this paper, motivated by the state-based peridynamic frame- work, we introduce a new nonlocal Laplacian that exhibits double nonlocality through the use of iterated integral operators. The operator introduces addi- tional degrees of exibility that can allow for better representation of physical phenomena at different scales and in materials with different properties. We study mathematical properties of this state-based Laplacian, including connec- tions with other nonlocal and local counterparts. Finally, we obtain explicit rates of convergence for this doubly nonlocal operator to the classical Laplacian as the radii for the horizons of interaction kernels shrink to zero.

The Promising Viral Threat To Bacterial Resistance: The Uncertain Patentability Of Phage Therapeutics And The Necessity Of Alternative Incentives, Kelly Todd Jan 2019

The Promising Viral Threat To Bacterial Resistance: The Uncertain Patentability Of Phage Therapeutics And The Necessity Of Alternative Incentives, Kelly Todd

Duke Law Journal

Bacteriophages, or “phages,” are a category of highly adept and adaptable viruses that can infect and kill bacteria. With concerns over the burgeoning antibiotic-resistance crisis looming in recent years, scientists and policymakers have expressed a growing interest in developing novel treatments for bacterial infections that utilize bacteriophages. Because of the great expense associated with bringing a new drug to market, patents are usually considered the gold standard for incentivizing research and development in the pharmaceutical field. Absent such strong protection for a developer’s front end investment, pharmaceutical development remains financially risky and unattractive. Unfortunately, recent Supreme Court jurisprudence analyzing patentable …

Understanding Sexual Prejudice: The Role Of Political Ideology And Strategic Essentialism, Crystal L. Hoyt, Thekla Morgenroth, Jeni L. Burnette

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Despite the increased visibility and acceptance of the LGBTQ community, sexual minorities continue to face prejudice and discrimination in many domains. Past research has shown that this prejudice is more prevalent among those holding conservative political views. In two studies, we merge strategic essentialism and motivated ideology theoretical perspectives to empirically investigate the link between political orientation and sexual prejudice. More specifically, we examine how conservatives strategically use different forms of essentialism to support their views of gay individuals and their reactions to messages aimed at changing essentializing beliefs. In Study 1 (N = 220), we demonstrate that conservatives endorse …

Microstructure Inelastic Damage Analysis Software (MIDAS) Virtual Tester Preprocessor (MIDAS-VT-Pre) was developed to facilitate construction of two-dimensional microstructure FE models of particle/fiber embedded composites. MIDAS-VT-Pre is able to insert automatically cohesive zone interface elements in the mesh structure in order to simulate …

Non-Temporal Point Cloud Analysis For Surface Damage In Civil Structures, Mohammad Ebrahim Mohammadi, Richard L. Wood, Christine E. Wittich Jan 2019

Non-Temporal Point Cloud Analysis For Surface Damage In Civil Structures, Mohammad Ebrahim Mohammadi, Richard L. Wood, Christine E. Wittich

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

Assessment and evaluation of damage in civil infrastructure is most often conducted visually, despite its subjectivity and qualitative nature in locating and verifying damaged areas. This study aims to present a new workflow to analyze non-temporal point clouds to objectively identify surface damage, defects, cracks, and other anomalies based solely on geometric surface descriptors that are irrespective of point clouds’ underlying geometry. Non-temporal, in this case, refers to a single dataset, which is not relying on a change detection approach. The developed method utilizes vertex normal, surface variation, and curvature as three distinct surface descriptors to locate the likely damaged …

Manufactured Emergencies, Robert L. Tsai Jan 2019

Manufactured Emergencies, Robert L. Tsai

Faculty Scholarship

Emergencies are presumed to be unusual affairs, but the United States has been in one state of emergency or another for the last forty years. That is a problem. The erosion of democratic norms has led to not simply the collapse of the traditional conceptual boundary between ordinary rule and emergency governance, but also the emergence of an even graver problem: the manufactured crisis. In an age characterized by extreme partisanship, institutional gridlock, and technological manipulation of information, it has become exceedingly easy and far more tempting for a President to invoke extraordinary power by ginning up exigencies. To reduce …

Bridging The Gap Between Public Opinion Research And Consumer Marketing Research: Insights Into U.S. Shoppers Of Organic Foods, Marilena O. Vilceanu, Olivia Grasso, Kristine Johnson

AMTP Proceedings 2019

The primary goal of this study embraces Hughner and team’s (2007) directive to focus new research on the growing segment of occasional consumers of organic and natural foods, rather than limit the search for consumer insights to the small, elitist groups of deeply committed consumers. Research questions address the demographics, attitudinal, and behavioral characteristics that identify organic foods as a premium product. Primary recommendations for marketing practitioners include focusing on higher income consumers, especially married individuals, who live in highly populated areas; creating a pleasant shopping experience; promoting non-food related organic items, and investing in brand presence and salience.

Peacock Motifs In Rig Vedic Hymns And Hungarian Folksongs, Peter Z. Revesz Jan 2019

Peacock Motifs In Rig Vedic Hymns And Hungarian Folksongs, Peter Z. Revesz

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Comparative musicology can link together the musical traditions of distant people. For example, Kodály found interesting melodic similarities between Hungarian and Mari folksongs. Although he found no melodic similarities between Hungarian and Indian folksongs, Kodály also believed that the peacock motif in Hungarian folksongs had an Indian origin. That would imply that texts with certain motifs are preserved even more than the melodies in folksongs. In this paper we show that it is indeed the case by describing a possible Rig Vedic origin of various Hungarian folksong texts with the peacock motif.

Using Data Mining Algorithms To Discover Regular Sound Changes Among Languages, Peter Revesz

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

This paper presents a method of using association rule data mining algorithms to discover regular sound changes among languages. The method presented has a great potential to facilitate linguistic studies aimed at identifying distantly related cognate languages. As an experimental example, this paper presents the application of the data mining method to the discovery of regular sound changes between the Hungarian and the Sumerian languages, which separated at least five thousand years ago when the Proto-Sumerian reached Mesopotamia. The data mining method discovered an important regular sound change between Hungarian word initial /f/ and Sumerian word initial /b/ phonemes.

Constructing Lumbersexuality: Marketing An Emergent Masculine Taste Regime, Mark A. Rademacher, Casey R. Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This article examines the online retailer Huckberry.com as a singular, centralized authority responsible for marketing “lumbersexuality” as an emergent, gender-normative taste regime. As an evolution of the devalued hipster marketplace myth, analysis reveals Huckberry promotes an adaptable taste regime to its young, educated, urban, White male clientele that unites goods, meanings, and practices across multiple fields of consumption that reconnect indie consumption and taste with a fantasy of “authentic” masculinity. We argue that Huckberry offers men semiotic resources that merge the urban with the outdoors in a way that enables the enactment of a fraught though seemingly durable masculine identity …

Applied Tensional Analysis: Engaging Practitioners And The Constitutive Shift, Jennifer Mease (Also Peeksmease) Jan 2019

Applied Tensional Analysis: Engaging Practitioners And The Constitutive Shift, Jennifer Mease (Also Peeksmease)

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This article introduces applied tensional analysis as a methodological framework that integrates constitutive ontologies (that depict organizations as processes in constant states of emerging or becoming) with the applied need for practitioners to understand and navigate the everyday exigencies of their organizational experiences. Applied tensional analysis centers analysis on tensions as the key to understanding organizational becoming in contrast to approaches that assume organizations are stable entities and consequently focus on patterns, themes, or laws. The applied tensional analysis framework offers four analytical foci (context, tensions, enacted responses, and repertoires) organized into two loops (analytical and change) as guides for …
